It’s the episode that slings a lot of Mudd, but promises to clean up the bots!

The Album: James Brown: In the Jungle Groove (1986)

This is the first of what will eventually be four episodes, released quarterly, that focus on the art of sampling. As Morgan explains in this episode, sampling isn’t simply a key aesthetic within pop music styles, especially hip-hop, it’s also an important way through which the past becomes present, allowing us to rediscover artists of yore. No artist in the 1980s benefitted more from this than James Brown.

By the end of the decade, Brown’s long funk discography had seemingly been mined thousands of ways over but if you had to trace things back to a ground zero, you’d find In the Jungle Groove, the 1986 compilation from Polydor that practically felt designed for sampling, especially by highlighting some of Brown’s fiercest and funkiest tracks, complete with new edits and remixes, none more far-reaching than “Funky Drummer,” a former 45-only jam that the comp not only released in its full form but also took Clyde Stubblefield’s iconic breakbeat and looped it into its own standalone track.

For our inaugural Art of Sampling episode, we revisit In the Jungle Groove and talk about both our favorite songs off the comp as well as our favorite uses of those various tracks. Listen to how we give it up and turn it loose.

If you listen to this episode you don’t have to go to film school. Our guest this week is Daisy von Scherler Mayer. You may know her best for her “debut tour de force” Party Girl. She is a prolific television director who has worked on everything from Mad Men to Orange Is The New Black. The movie she has chosen to talk about this week is one of her favorite films, Bob Fosse’s All That Jazz. Daisy takes April through exactly how this film has influenced her life, and even names specific scenes she has stolen from the movie (a practice she heartily encourages for film students). Daisy does a wonderful job of explaining how she speaks to actors and creates a supportive environment for them. This episode is also particularly enlightening as Daisy and April really get into the creative process and the emotional rollercoaster it can be. She also discusses the genius of Bob Fosse and how he was able to create a “perfect film.” This episode is required listening for anyone who wants to be filmmaker. Take notes during this one.

The entertainment mogul wrote his way out of homelessness, and now presides over a media empire, including the 330-acre lot bearing his name in Atlanta: Tyler Perry Studios. Jarrett and Tre’Vell get into why their fans of Perry, from his business acumen, the opportunities he’s created for black actors and his philanthropy. They also delve into Perry’s problem areas--the uneven quality of his writing, the pattern of colorism in his body of work, his portrayal of women on screen and wigs. Really bad wigs.

It’s going to get so nerdy! More than usual- this is going to be a 12 off the nerd scale so get ready! We’ve got The legendary Cymatic Bruce a VR Evangelist, DDR World Champion, Co Founder of Alt Space VR, and just a fabulous blerd! We are going to revisit some of our favorite Sci-Fi and Fantasy movie epics like Lord of the Rings, the Hobbit, The Matrix Trilogy, leading into a discussion about the Witcher and how best to enjoy this diverse fantasy epic (you can tell what I did over the break). And in the main event Bruce leads us in a conversation about video games and tech by first talking about the god father of video game consoles… Jerry Lewis, who was an early Black Silicon Valley engineer and creator of the Fairchild Channel F. He’s kind of like Bruce’s Obi Wan because through him we get Bruce’s origin story, and being Black and navigating the tech and video game world. This of course launches us into so many conversations about the Black Silicon Valley Exodus, toxic masculinity in the competitive video game world, the history of marketing video games to boys how that came to be, and the inclusivity of some pockets of the video game world over others and the direction it’s all heading in. Get your Star Wars Mandalorian Nerd goggles on and your Witcher’s Sorcerer’s tarp on because you well get wet… with all this sweet sweet nerdtastic talk.

This week Hal, Danielle, and Lindsey are joined by RJ City. He’s an actor, comedian and wrestling raconteur across the international scene.

RJ is involved in a lot of different avenues of entertainment.That’s given him a lot versatility as a performer since he learns a lot from working with so many different audiences. But it’s also made him acutely aware of the different… physical requirements with wrestling compared to being a stand up comic. He’ll explain.

Plus, he’ll tell us all about why he’s become so bored with the traditions of wrestling; in his mind it’s a whole lot of very passionate people competing for very small stakes. That’s why he works to combat a lot of the ideas of traditional masculinity in his work. RJ will tell us about how intentional that is.

All of this and why he thinks wrestling isn’t headed for a mainstream audience any time soon.

RJ City’s can be seen in an upcoming comedy show with Dalton Castle in Toronto and on his YouTube channel.

Rosie Perez is one of the most fascinating people we’ve had on Bullseye. Straight up

She’s had truly iconic roles in films like White Men Can’t Jump and Do The Right Thing, where she was introduced with an electrifying opening credits scene that is still talked about to this day. She was nominated for an Academy Award for her role in 1993’s Fearless where she played a young woman dealing with guilt and trauma following a deadly plane crash and she’s performed on stage and screen in countless other projects.

She’s been a host on ABC’s The View, and co-founded the Urban Arts Partnership—a long-running New York nonprofit that works in education and the arts. She’s served as Grand Marshal for the International Boxing Hall of Fame— make no mistake, she knows her stuff— and as if all of that weren’t enough, she was a powerhouse choreographer for “In Living Color” where she helped introduce hip hop acts like Heavy D to the mainstream.

A native of Bushwick, Brooklyn, she grew up in a convent, overcoming abject poverty and emotional abuse. She got her first big break on Soul Train as a dancer and was one of the first to bring a hip hop style of dancing to television back when most were still doing the hustle.

Rosie chats with Jesse about surviving her difficult childhood, living with PTSD and why she’ll always have a soft spot for the suburbs. Plus, she’ll tell us why she prefers the New York hustle and bustle over sunny Los Angeles. Rosie speaks with us from the heart and we’re so happy to have her on the show.

Jamie Loftus is a comedian and a host of "The Bechdel Cast" podcast. Her show is all about analyzing film from a feminist perspective. One movie that holds up surprisingly well under such scrutiny? Alien! She’ll explain. Plus, she’ll discuss what gives her a special edge in this trivia contest: her certification as a Mensa Genius. Jamie’s upcoming appearances can be found on her website.

Jamie will compete against her fellow comedian and feminist Craig Shoemaker. He describes his work as “comedy for the soul.” That’s not just a pun on his name; He’ll tell us about how his work has actually helped people in real life. Brothers Adam and Noah share a home bought out of foreclosure. They are slowly fixing up the house together and the rent is cheap, but it comes at a cost: bats! The webbed-winged creatures seem to be entering the house through the cracks in the unfinished roof of the bathroom. Animal-lover Noah is spooked by their presence, but would rather keep the bats confined to the bathroom than see them come to harm. His brother Adam meanwhile has a lust for blood matched only by vampire bats, and would like his brother to join him in beating them to death.

Should the brothers run in fear, or face their phobias head-on? And just what is the solution to this flying mammal mess? In this battle of the bats, only one man has the answers: Judge John Hodgman!

Jennifer Kent is probably best known for directing her 2014 film, The Babadook. The film screened at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2014 to critical and audience acclaim, and has won over 50 international and domestic awards, including the Australian Director’s Guild award for Best Director, the Australian Academy Award (AACTA) for Best Direction, Best Screenplay and Best Film, and the New York Critics Circle Awards for Best First Feature. This year now sees the release of her second feature, The Nightingale, a brutal colonial revenge tale about a woman who loses everything and joins up with an aboriginal tracker to find and inflict punishment on the men who wronged her.

The movie that Jennifer has chosen to discuss is the 1961 classic, The Innocents. Jennifer elaborates on the aspects of the film that she used as direct influence for her own films. She talks about taking the young actor Noah Wiseman to the zoo in order to prepare him for the truly horrifying scenes in The Babadook. Plus, she divulges how the misconceptions about her film The Nightingale have really hurt her personally. She tells a story about how one journalist at the Venice Film festival even called her a “whore” for directing the film. And finally, if you listen all the way through the episode, you get to hear Jennifer’s impeccable impression of a Tasamanian devil.

To talk about Kendrick Lamar's studio LP debut, we wanted to find someone of K-Dot's generation, another L.A. young gun, and who better than pianist and composer, Kris Bowers? Like Kendrick, Kris grew up in L.A. and just as Kendrick has ascended the hip-hop ladder, so has Kris in jazz, as he won the prestigious Theolonious . But more than that, the web of Los Angeles musical ties was bound to bring the two into orbit in different ways - something we discuss in the episode - not the least of which is the fact that Kris covered one of the biggest tracks in Kendrick's early career: "Rigamortis."

In our conversation with Kris, we got deep into how he put together both the song and video for his version of "Rigamortis," whether or not Kendrick has a jazz sensibility in his style, and what it's like to see a hometown kid become the Greatest Rapper Alive.
