Ep. 32 | Boat Buildin' With Frankie Marion

Scotty and Frankie Talk Boat Design, Fishing Filmmaking, Outdoor Adventures, and More!

Frankie Marion is the owner of Xplor Boatworks. Born from an idea for a film project out of a garage in Columbia, South Carolina, Xplor Boatworks was a thing before it was a thing. Frankie wanted to build a boat for a film project called the Xplor Project. He needed a skiff that would allow him to traverse across the vast Louisiana Delta unaided for an entire month. This skiff needed to have enough storage to carry gear for multiple people, be agile enough to get into the deepest pockets of the marsh, and be built well enough to withstand everything the team would throw at it.

The trip was not only a success in that Frankie was able to complete the film project, but also that the boat exceeded expectations. Upon returning to the dock, Frankie had several requests for boats, just like the one he had built for his expedition. Thus, Xplor Boatworks was born.

Scotty and Matt Talk Fly Tying Innovation, Unique Fly Rods, Childhood Fishing Shenanigans, and More! "If you don’t know Matt, then a) you’re missing out and b) keep reading. If your car breaks down in the middle of the night then call Matt Callies; you’ll hear his car start before he asks you where he’s headed, and once he gets there chances are good that he will a) know what the problem is b) have the required tools in his truck to fix it c) notice that you’d get more out of your stereo if you’d let him give you the old amp he has just sitting in his garage and d) convince you that you should join him in heading out to the coast to swing up a salmon or two… after all, the flows are perfect, you’re both awake already, he just tied up a dozen beautifully gaudy bugs and he has a client whose donut shop opens in a few minutes and they make the best maple bars… That is Matt. Don’t try to keep up, just try to contribute where you can and enjoy one of fly fishing’s most creative, generous, and all-around-good dudes." – From Matt's profile in This Is Fly Magazine

Ep. 29 | Fly Fishing Maine With Sean McCormick

Scotty and Sean Talk Big Brook Trout vs. Smallmouth Bass, Atlantic Salmon, Stonefly Hatches, and More! Sean McCormick lives two hundred yards from the place he grew up in central Maine on the banks of the Sheepscot river, a wild Atlantic salmon river. He started fly fishing in sixth grade when a science teacher sent him home with a Universal vise, hooks, fly tying tools, and three or four bucktail pieces to try for the evening. For 25+ years, Sean has rowed a drift boat on the Kennebec River, guiding fly anglers for trout, salmon, and occasionally smallmouth bass. In the winter Sean can be found at his fly tying desk prepping his fly boxes for the upcoming fishing season and working to develop innovations in fly design! Mike Schultz (known as “Schultzy” to most) is the owner of Schultz Outfitters Fly Shop & Guide Service specializing in Southeastern Michigan angling, instruction, and destination travel.
Ep. 19 | Crooked Creek Holler With Danny Reed

Scotty and Danny Talk Fly Fishing Tattoos, Beaver Island, Peacock and Smallmouth Bass, and More!

Crooked Creek Holler was started in 2014 as a creative outlet for Danny Reed to try his hand at making wildlife-inspired gear for a different type of market. He felt that a lot of people in the outdoor world didn’t have a brand that represented them well, leading to their concept of "goods and gear for the modern outdoorsman."

As an angler and outdoorsman, every design Danny creates is based on a personal experience. From floating down the river in pursuit of smallmouth, or traveling the world in search of exotic species, Danny is always looking for inspiration in the great outdoors.

Danny views Crooked Creek Holler as his opportunity to share his art and the talents of many other artists and friends. He tries to offer fresh ideas and images that break away from standard branding, with a more hand-drawn feel. While on occasion Crooked Creek Holler utilizes digital mediums, they try and retain that unique vibe you only get from “hand-crafting” art.

Danny thanks everyone who supports and wears Crooked Creek Holler. He thinks it's been crazy to watch the organic growth over the years into something he could never have imagined. What started as a passion project, is now a fully operational small business and he is looking forward to what the future holds.

Ep. 14 | Fly Fishing The Bahamas & The New River With Mike Smith

Scotty and Mike Talk Fly Fishing Bonefish, Smallmouth Bass, Walleye, and More!

Mike Smith, the man, the myth, the legend!

Mike first met Flymen founder and CEO Martin Bawden in the early days of Flymen and has been a huge part of Flymen ever since as a fly designer and lead smallmouth guru among his many contributions to the flies and fly tying materials you know and love. His signature flies include the Skull Daddy Crayfish, Foxy Shrimp, Forage Fly, Saltwater Forage Fly, River Creature, Salt Creature, and Egg Sucking Flash Minnow.

Mike is the owner and operator of New River Fly Fishing and in addition to guiding his native Virginia waters, he hosts trips to East End Lodge in The Bahamas.

East End Lodge was completely flattened by Hurricane Dorian. Mike recently returned from a trip to East End Lodge where he saw how the crew rebuilt the lodge from scratch and got back on their feet. If you have been following East End Lodge on Instagram you may have seen the rebuilding process in their stories. Truly inspiring!

While at East End Lodge, Mike reeled in some big bonefish with the new Micro Alphlexo Crab fly pattern, and the East End guides were highly impressed with how the bonefish responded to this new fly pattern. If you're looking for a bonefish trip be sure to check out East End and Mike's hosted trips there.

On top of all of this, Mike has written five fly fishing books, known as the Angler’s Guide Series, and he's a college professor!

How does he do it all? We don't know. Enjoy the episode.

Ep. 13 | Redfish and More With Chris Siess

Scotty and Chris Talk Redfish Fly Fishing and More!

Capt. Chris Siess is the owner and head guide of Knot the Reel World Fly Fishing. Chris has been fly fishing since the age of nine, when his mother booked him lessons with well known fly fisherman, fly tyer, and bamboo rod builder Hank Woolman. That lesson led to a pretty bad obsession for chasing fish with the long rod. Chris spent his childhood catching bass in local Virginia farm ponds and saltwater species on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Big time college football and family tradition drew Chris to Blacksburg, Virginia for his college years at Virginia Tech. There he fell in love with southwest Virginia; specifically its hikes, views, and of course the New River and local trout waters.

Post college, Chris spent several seasons playing in the mountains of Colorado as a ski bum and fly fishing guide. Working for Aspen Outfitting Company, he was able to fine tune his trout skills on the extremely technical Roaring Fork River. Chris has since returned to Virginia to chase the multitude of species available in the Old Dominion. Chris spends nearly as much time tying as he does fishing. From first tying simple flies with the hair off the family pet Border Collies, he now designs flies for fish all over the world.

You can contact Knot the Reel World Fly Fishing at 571-334-4721 or knotthereelworld@gmail.com.

Ep. 11 | Fly Fishing the Crystal Coast With John Mauser

Scotty and John Talk Redfish, False Albacore, Project Healing Waters, and More!

Captain John Mauser is a fly fishing and light tackle guide out of Swansboro, North Carolina. He has been fishing the waters of North Carolina for thirty-five years. John spent his youth on the Chowan River in northeast NC hunting for bluegill and bass. The Chowan River was also the location where John first cast a fly rod, throwing little popping bugs at lily pads in search of bass. As a teenager, John became more familiar with the great saltwater fishing available along the coast.

John graduated from UNC Wilmington with a Marine Biology Degree and soon started working for the North Carolina Aquariums. For the past 15 years, Mauser has called Swansboro his home and has spent a great deal of his time learning the local waters. John and his wife have two sons, a ten-year-old and a four-year-old, who always keep life interesting.

John helped establish the local Crystal Coast Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing Program, which rehabilitates disabled military veterans through fly tying and fly fishing activities. Six years later, John is still an active volunteer with the program, assisting with casting instruction, fly tying, and fishing trips for the veterans.

In 2014, John helped re-form the Cape Lookout Albacore Festival, and served as a board member for the first five years. The Cape Lookout Albacore Festival is a 3-day event, held each October around the height of the fall False Albacore run. The Festival consists of a private fishing event for disabled veterans, a public fishing tournament, auctions, dinners, and captain's parties. All of the funds from each C.L.A.F. is donated to Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing at the State and National Levels.

In 2017, John launched Mauser Fly Fishing, a local manufacturer of USA made fly rods. John's love for guiding anglers and giving casting instruction led to the formation of this brand. John will tell you that this company is the most challenging thing he's ever attempted, and he loves every second of it.

In 2019, John worked with a few other local fly fishing guides and formed the Carolina Fly Fishing Academy. The academy offers 1 and 2 day courses based around saltwater fly fishing in the Southeast.

Ep. 6 | From Australia to Arkansas With Steve Dally

Scotty and Steve Talk Mentorship In Fly Fishing, Streamer Lovefest, Guiding, and More!

Steve Dally was raised on Australia’s island state of Tasmania, in Aussie fly fishing terms the equivalent of being raised in Montana. But he'll tell you he squandered his youth in the salt, surfing, diving, and fishing for all manner of species. Finally convinced in his late 20s to grasp a fly rod, an obsession was born. He cut his teeth on the challenging wild brown trout and rainbows of Tasmania’s wilderness lakes and streams before moving to the US in December 2000. A former journalist, Steve spent 3 years in the US as a traveling fly fishing writer and photographer, a job which saw him land, fly rod and camera in hand in Montana, Wyoming, Alaska twice, Baja, New York, Michigan, New Mexico, Idaho and finally Arkansas.

The experience in tackling North American conditions was invaluable as he fished the mayfly hatches of the Henrys Fork, Firehole and Au Sable, caddis hatches on the Big Wood, chuck and ducked beads on the Kenai, stripped streamers on the Beaverhead, splatted hoppers on Silver Creek, found himself tied to 40lb King Salmon on the Ayakulik, and roosterfish and snook in Mexico.

His articles and photographs have appeared in numerous publications and websites, including Fly Fisherman and Anglers Journal, and he remains a masthead columnist and regular contributor on tactics, destinations and fly tying with Australia and New Zealand’s premier fly fishing magazine FlyLife.

After flirting with guiding, and several job offers on his travels, Steve started guiding out of the Beaver Dam store, in '04 and ran the fly fishing department, building his knowledge of the White River system from Beaver to Norfork and a substantial and loyal guide clientele, before joining the Mountain River Fly Shop in Cotter in ‘07.

Despite a serious and extensive fly fishing resume, Steve’s laid-back Aussie accent and attitude, sense of humor and self-deprecating wit are appreciated by beginners and experienced fly fishers alike. His mantra is that fly fishing is meant to be fun whether you are catching the biggest fish of your life, tangling around the rod tip and everything in between.
