Jahan Khamsehzadeh, Ph.D. completed his dissertation on psychedelics in the Philosophy, Cosmology, and Consciousness program at the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) in San Francisco. His dissertation ultimately became a book titled, The Psilocybin Connection: Psychedelics, the Transformation of Consciousness, and Evolution of the Planet—An Integral Approach, and was published by North Atlantic Books and distributed by Penguin Random House. He earned his Masters in Consciousness and Transformative Studies from John F. Kennedy University, and his Bachelors from the University of Arizona with a major in Philosophy and minors in Physics, Psychology, and Mathematics. Aside from academic work, he has undergone several major trainings, including graduating from the Hakomi somatic-psychotherapy program and training within the Mazatec mushroom tradition. He assisted the Psychedelic-Assisted Psychotherapy Certificate training at CIIS for two years, and mentored for a year at the the School of Consciousness Medicine. Currently, he works as a facilitator for legal psilocybin mushrooms ceremonies in Jamaica with Atman Retreats. In this episode, Dr. Khamsehzadeh delves into our historical and ancestral relationship to psilocybin and theorizes how mushrooms have impacted the development of the brain. Rick Doblin on Sending the Soviets MDMA, Treating PTSD with Psychedelics and What the Future Holds

Over the last several decades, Rick Doblin and his organization, MAPS, have been at the forefront of changing cultural attitudes surrounding psychedelics. They have accomplished this through several avenues.

The first is researching the medical applications of psychedelics. Most prominently, they have been testing treating severe PTSD with MDMA-assisted therapy, the results of which have been amazing. For example, in their most recent phase 3 clinical trial, 67% of patients with severe PTSD improved so much they no longer qualified for the diagnosis of PTSD. In this interview, James and Rick discuss this trial and upcoming follow-up trials.

MAPS has also been involved in extensive psychedelic education campaigns. Their newest endeavor is a “psychonaut training program”, which will teach regular people how to “trip” properly, and how to be a trip sitter.

Finally, James and Rick discuss his wild plan in the 80s to send MDMA to the Soviet Union in an attempt to make nuclear negotiators more empathetic.

He is a UK-based writer and journalist who has lived with the symptoms of Hallucinogen Persisting Perception Disorder (HPPD) since he was a teenager. An enthusiast of psychedelic experience and its clinical promise, Prideaux seeks to bridge HPPD patient groups with the psychedelic community through advocacy for the Perception Restoration Foundation, a 501 (c) (3) charity that raises awareness and funds for studies into HPPD and Visual Snow Syndrome.
