UKSCA Coach Considerations

The UKSCA is the Professional Body for Strength and Conditioning in the UK and we believe in giving people the opportunity to become healthier through physical activity.

Whilst the UKSCA’s roots and future are firmly set within the world of elite sport, we have an opportunity to take our knowledge and expertise and broaden our reach outside of this marketplace. Everyone in the population can benefit from the language of Strength and Conditioning and we have a responsibility to share this message with clarity and integrity.
Strength and Conditioning practice shall no longer be confined to just the sports stadium or university lecture hall, everyone shall have the opportunity to be healthier through physical activity and the UKSCA shall champion this initiative.

Here we will share information, topics and learning to showcase and celebrate best practice and innovation.

Sport science 2.0 is messy – time to clean it up: Practical insights for monitoring load and response in elite football

In this closing keynote, Dr Martin Buchheit maps a path from “sports science 2.0” (measure everything) to “3.0” (measure what matters, then act). He frames training around dose–response, across four quadrants: load vs response, neuromuscular vs metabolic. Expect frank takes on GPS limits, why heart rate still matters, and practical, scalable monitoring. This podcast was recorded live at the UKSCA Annual Conference.

Dr Sophia Nimphius challenges the conventional obsession with measuring strength through snapshots, urging us to remember strength as a process of durability, robustness, and adaptation — not just outputs like “two × body weight” or isometric tests.
Exploring the impact of focused awareness and breath control on clarity, state and connection

Richard Husseiny’s presentation at the UKSCA 2024 conference focused on shifting from a rational mindset to one of embodied awareness.

He introduces participants to techniques such as breathwork, body scanning, and tuning into the space around the body to calm the mind and reduce analytical thinking. Richard emphasises the importance of connecting with the heart and softening body tension to achieve a heightened sense of self-awareness. He spoke about the body's electromagnetic field, explaining how mindfulness can positively affect brainwaves and help regulate performance states.

The session encourages participants to explore their body’s natural intelligence, guiding them through a layered process of relaxation and awareness-building that extended beyond traditional mental frameworks.

Richard's background in mindfulness, combined with his experience in elite sports, added a unique dimension to the session. This podcast was recorded live at the UKSCA Annual Conference.

School and Youth S&C Round Table Discussion

The UKSCA 2024 round table discussion, chaired by Andy Boyd, brought together experts from academia, sport institutes, and education to discuss youth physical activity. Kevin Till from Leeds Beckett University, Stuart Ferrier from the Scottish Institute of Sport, and Asha Riley from St Swithun's School, highlights the challenges of encouraging children to be more active. The conversation covered the World Health Organisation's physical activity guidelines, screen time issues, and how the S&C community can step up by fostering engaging environments in schools. One standout point was the idea that under-training in childhood can lead to overtraining later in life due to physical unpreparedness. Asha Riley shares her experience in creating a more inclusive approach to physical education at her school, emphasising that every child should have access to physical training, not just the top athletes.

The discussion concluded with a call for collaboration between S&C coaches, PE teachers, and policymakers to address these challenges on a broader scale.
This podcast was recorded live at the UKSCA Annual Conference.

Enhancing Perfomance and Managing Fatigue in High Workload Athletes and Dancers

Dr. Jamie Tallent’s presentation at the UKSCA 2024 conference explored how micro-dosing and high-frequency training can significantly impact performance in elite athletes.

Drawing on his extensive experience with organisations like the Royal Ballet, Dr. Tallent discusses how these training methods can be used to manage high workloads without sacrificing performance. By splitting traditional strength and conditioning sessions into smaller, more frequent doses, athletes maintain consistency, reduce fatigue, and enhance physical adaptations. This approach has shown particular success with dancers, where training intensity and workload fluctuate, allowing them to maintain strength and jump height throughout the season.

Dr. Tallent also highlights that, although initially met with scepticism, athletes and coaches alike have embraced the benefits of this training model. His work emphasises that no single method is universal but tailoring strategies to specific environments is key to achieving the best results.

By incorporating these lessons, practitioners can enhance training efficiency and support athlete development more effectively.

The Future of Womens Sport: Built on foundations of stone or sand?

Dr. Emma Ross's presentation at the UKSCA 2024 conference focused on a vital question: is the growth of women's sport built on sand or stone?

As participation, media coverage, and revenue in women's sport surge, Dr. Ross warns that this progress risks collapse if we don’t adequately support the female athletes at its core. Drawing on over a decade of research and experience, Dr. Ross explains the importance of addressing female-specific physiological needs. She emphasises that while equality in resources—such as coaching and facilities—is essential, equity must also be considered.

Female athletes require tailored approaches, particularly regarding menstrual health, nutrition, and injury prevention. Dr. Ross highlights the need for coaches and support staff to recognise and manage issues like pelvic floor dysfunction and menstrual irregularities to prevent long-term health consequences. She also discusses the challenge of changing entrenched mindsets and practices that treat male and female athletes the same. To build a sustainable future for women's sport, Dr. Ross called for a system where female athletes’ health and well-being are prioritised, ensuring they can perform at their best.

The Need for Speed: Eccentric Training

Dr. Jonathan Hughes' presentation at the UKSCA 2024 annual conference highlighted the significance of eccentric training in high-performance sports.

Drawing on his experience across team sports like rugby, hockey, and individual athletes in cycling, Hughes emphasises how eccentric training helps with multi-directional decelerations and complex movements. While not a new concept, its benefits, especially when combined with the latest technology to measure training transfer, are increasingly recognised.

One of the main challenges coaches face is accurately measuring and applying eccentric training to achieve real performance gains. Dr. Hughes shares research findings showing that most high-performance coaches already use some form of eccentric training, but he stressed the importance of understanding the “why” and the optimal applications in real-world sports environments. He also touched on the neural mechanisms behind eccentric actions and how they differ from traditional strength training methods, focusing on improving athletes’ braking capacity, control, and speed in dynamic environments. This podcast was recorded live at the UKSCA Annual Conference.

Understanding Stability

In his UKSCA 2024 presentation, Ulrik Sandstrom provided a deep dive into the neurological aspects of injury prevention and rehabilitation. Drawing on decades of experience, Ulrik explaines how the nervous system controls muscles and how disturbances in this system can lead to injury, even in elite athletes. He used compelling case studies, such as Michael Owen's infamous MCL injury, to illustrate how a lack of neuromuscular control can cause athletes to break down despite their strength and conditioning levels. Ulrik also stresses the importance of eccentric movements, explaining that many injuries happen during the deceleration phase of movement, when muscles are required to control force.

His presentation emphasises the need for practitioners to look beyond muscular strength and focus on enhancing neurological control to optimise performance and reduce injury risk.

The key takeaway: stability and control are the foundation of both injury prevention and athletic performance.

The Noble Art of Cat Herding

"Elite athletes and coaches have got a mind of their own… and many of them are not afraid to use it. Added to that, many also have an ego… their own agendas and self-interest.
It can feel like trying to herd cats. So, how do you lead and motivate a team of independent thinkers?
During this session, you’ll discover how to ‘herd cats’. Simon will share his experiences from over 25 years working in elite sport, plus lessons he’s learned from studying some of the very best leaders and teams on the planet – such as Special Forces units and Red Arrows teams." This podcast was recorded live at the UKSCA Annual Conference.

The Transformative Journey of Physical Preparation In High Performance Golf

"Less than a decade ago, the European Tour had one rack in a medical truck to support nearly 200 players at an event, food menus were far from ‘high performance’ and there was no scientific support outside of basic physiotherapy and medical cover. Any onsite gym was converted into a media centre, because it was seen as ‘free space’. Golf ‘fitness’ was still in early stages of its development, with only a few players receiving high quality support and many either not training or just moving around with bands, trying to replicate their swing.
In less than a decade, professional golf has gone through a complete transformation. The players are more athletic and hitting the ball further than ever before, to complete for some of the highest prize purses in sport. This talk will showcase the development of high-performance support in elite amateur and professional golf and describe some of the exciting steps yet to come" This podcast was recorded live at the UKSCA Annual Conference.

Stress, Recover and Adapt: The potential influence of the female Menstrual Cycle

Kirsty Hicks - STRESS, RESPOND AND RECOVER: THE POTENTIAL INFLUENCE OF THE FEMALE MENSTRUAL CYCLE. Kirsty has worked in elite sport for over a decade, specifically within women's football. In this session Kirsty will examine the latest scientific evidence in an attempt to unravel the effect of the menstrual cycle on performance, recovery, and adaptation. The talk will critically discuss whether performance varies across the menstrual cycle, whilst also considering the use of oral contraception on performance. To achieve optimal performance, it is of paramount importance that we optimise the opportunity to recover and adapt immediately post and during the extended post-recovery days. Therefore, we will also discuss whether the response to, and the recovery from, an acute bout of exercise varies across the menstrual cycle. In addition to the normal measures of performance and recovery, we will focus on the symptoms experienced across the menstrual cycle. We will consider and discus the prevalence, frequency, and severity of symptoms, and whether they might affect performance and recovery in some female athletes. Finally, we will discuss how we can best use this information to inform practice, and enhance the support provided to female athletes" This podcast was recorded live at the UKSCA Annual Conference.

Building Strong Foundations

Dr Helen Collins - Building strong foundations: a paradigm shift for youth S&C coaches?

Taken for the UKSCA Annual Conference in 2022, Dr Helen Collins presents.

Resistance training for youth has increased in popularity, particularly from an athletic development perspective. However, while current physical activity guidelines emphasise the health benefits of strength-based exercise for the wider youth population, uptake in resistance training, and opportunities to take part remain limited. Dr Collins aims to showcase the broader impact of resistance training for youth with particular focus on those less active and/or at risk of obesity.

Additionally, there will be emphasis on promoting a rewarding, alternative career path for strength and conditioning coaches, where the focus on improving physical activity and health has significant benefit for all." This podcast was recorded live at the UKSCA Annual Conference.
