<p>NO WAY! I want you to see it for the BALONEY it is, and leave it out of your life.</p>
<p>And, I'm taking you back into another scene from my life when I used the Burrito Exit Strategy and HOW I once again avoided pulling into the drive-thru! I put on my detective hat and within a few steps I figured out what was REALLY going on! I didn't try to cover up what I was feeling with food, shopping, or anything else.</p>
<p>And when I finally GOT CLEAR on what was making me want to pull into the drive-thru...I did THIS instead.</p>
<p>No drive-thru. No burrito. No McGriddle.</p>
<p>WOW, how many calories have I saved myself in the last week???? At least 1000!</p>

        <![CDATA[<p>This is one of those <em><strong>&quot;me getting real honest with you about my life&quot;</strong></em> episodes...a few tears were shed during this recording.</p>
<p>But it was important for me to be real with you and let my emotions flow, because THIS is so often the missing link to long-term weight loss surgery success.</p>
<p>What I hear too often is, &quot;I can't stand who I was before I had surgery...I was a loser...I was a failure...I  had no self-discipline or self-control...&quot;</p>
<p>If you don't get clear on who you were and WHY, pre-surgery, and make peace with yourself...you'll be at odds with yourself and your weight loss surgery journey until you do.</p>
<p>This comes down to self-compassion, understanding who you were before surgery, and sending a big hug to your pre-surgery self for all you were going through then.</p>
<p>You can't do anything good for yourself - for an extended period of time - when you're feeling bad about yourself, when you're beating yourself up.</p>
<p>Let's work on sustainable practices - heart &amp; mindset shifts - to get you on the road to living your healthiest and happiest life with weight loss surgery.</p>

<p>I've got a story for you, when I INSISTED that I should be able to keep doing something, no matter how much it hurt!</p>
<p>However, my doctor...did not agree with me.</p>
<p>I'm going to walk you through my stubbornness and unwillingness to see my situation differently...</p>
<p>And you may see a little of yourself, in me.</p>
<p>PLUS I'm going to walk you through the steps to FIND YOUR WAY around your problem!</p>

<p>So WHY is it then, when WLS patients are trying to deal with REGAIN, they keep looking for another solution &quot;out there&quot;?!!</p>
<p>Just what do they think they're going to find &quot;out there&quot;?</p>
<p>They're looking in the WRONG place. For most WLS patients, the answer isn't &quot;out there&quot;. Let's talk about WHERE the answer for REGAIN is, and what to do once you find it!</p>

<p>We all did so many diets before surgery, joined so many weight loss programs. But having weight loss surgery IS NOT THE SAME as being a member of Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Lindora, or other weight loss program.</p>
<p>Do you REALLY want to live your healthiest and happiest life? I know you do - that's WHY you had weight loss surgery...to live your best life to the fullest!</p>
<p>THIS bariatric surgery guideline, if avoided, can land you in the hospital with irreversible damage. I know that's not what you want for your life. And even if you're feeling good and looking good, that doesn't mean all is well.</p>
<p>I'm staying on my soapbox until you HEAR ME OUT! Because I care about you and want the best for you.</p>

<p>But how quickly we're reminded that winter holidays aren't the only time of year when you can get caught up in the fun of the season and somehow find yourself eating a little more of this and that, or not finding enough time to exercise.</p>
<p>And then...weight gain.<br />
And then...not feeling too good about yourself.</p>
<p>NOT THIS SUMMER MY FRIEND, NOT THIS SUMMER!</p>
<p>How can you do summertime and summer vacations better?</p>
<p>What I hear from clients and WLS friends who've had weight loss surgery summer struggles:</p>
<ol>
<li>They don't have a plan.</li>
<li>They have a plan but it's not well thought out – it’s not realistic based on their schedule and life.</li>
<li>They have a plan, it's well thought out, but then BUMPS IN THE ROAD show up and they lose control of their plan.</li>
</ol>

        <![CDATA[<p>In talking with hundreds of weight loss surgery patients over the last 17 years I've learned that most believe surgery allows them a fresh start, a way to begin again. Not only with their health and appearance, but somehow they believe along with losing the pounds, the rest of their troubled pasts will be swept away too.</p>
<p>It's not true.</p>
<p>And what's more, is that while it seems like the &quot;old troubles&quot; are wiped away during that honeymoon period of the first 12 months - once the compliments stop, and it's not such a big deal to shop in regular stores, and your doctor isn't high-five-ing you about your labs anymore because your results have been normal for months now...reality begins to creep back in.</p>
<p>And this is when &quot;old troubles&quot; can sweep back in too. <strong>But surgery CANNOT wipe away your &quot;old troubles&quot;.</strong></p>
<p>Let's talk about this.</p>

        <![CDATA[<p>It's our last day of the SPRING Fresh Start WLS Master Challenge! But I'll have one more Fresh Start message for you tomorrow.</p>
<p>Fundamental Focus: MENTAL HEALTH</p>
<p>&quot;...You will not have a healthy body if you don't also take care of your mind...Good mental health helps you enjoy life and cope with problems. It offers a feeling of well-being and inner strength...You don't automatically have good mental health just because you don't have mental health illness. You have to work to keep your mind healthy.&quot; <a href="https://www.womenshealth.gov/mental-health/good-health/">-Office on Women's Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services</a></p>
<p>&quot;Mental health is defined as a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community.&quot; <a href="http://www.who.int/features/factfiles/mental_health/en/">-World Health Organization</a></p>
<p>“...when a person goes through major lifestyle and body changes after surgery, major adjustments occur in how we think about ourselves and how others think of us. Some patients gain much more confidence…Others struggle…Marriages and relationships can be strained...access to an experienced mental health professional can be an important part of postoperative recovery. Above all, each patient should be prepared for “bumps in the road” along the journey, whether it’s interpersonal conflict, marriage stress, a surgical complication, or a plateau in weight-loss.” <a href="https://asmbs.org/patients/life-after-bariatric-surgery">-ASMBS</a></p>
<p>Today, there's no Mental Health “challenge” per se, but rather a plea.</p>
<p>Here's the short and sweet of it.</p>
<p>I believe Mental Heath is the most important of all the bariatric surgery guidelines, and also the most ignored.</p>

<p>It's DAY 6!</p>
<p>Fundamental Bariatric Surgery Focus: NUTRITION</p>
<p>What does the ASMBS have to say about Nutrition?</p>
<p><em>“Healthy lifestyle choices give the best results for health and Quality of Life after surgery. Protein-rich foods are important, with patients advised to take in 60-100g of protein daily, depending on their medical conditions, type of operation and activity level. The ASMBS warns patients to avoid excessive carbohydrate intake, such as starchy foods (breads, pastas, crackers, refined cereals) and sweetened foods (cookies, cakes, candy, or other sweets). Limiting carbohydrates to 50 grams per day or less helps avoid rebound hunger problems which can lead to weight regain.”<br />
“Keep in mind there are no standardized dietary guidelines following weight loss surgery, like there are for other disease states…shocking, isn’t it? I am pointing this out to you because patients often don’t understand why there are so many different dietary approaches following surgery. Each surgeon and health care team typically provides a diet plan for their patients after surgery, FOLLOW THAT.” -Cassie Story, RDN,</em></p>

<p><em>&quot;Before I did this research I thought joyful people were grateful people...But what I've learned unequivocally is that it's not having wonderful experiences that make us grateful, it's practicing gratitude that leads to wonderful, joyful experiences.&quot; -Dr. Brené Brown</em></p>
<p>Sometimes, are you so busy that you overlook the joy of ordinary moments?</p>
<p>Brené Brown spoke with people who'd experience extreme tragedy and learned that it wasn't the extraordinary moments they missed as much as the small ordinary moments they had overlooked every day. <em>&quot;I didn't realize the meaning they held until they were gone.&quot;</em></p>
<p><em>&quot;There's a difference in feeling grateful and practicing gratitude. And it's during our darkest times when we don't feel grateful that practicing gratitude makes the difference. Joy collected over time, fuels resilience - so when bad, crappy things happen...we've got a reserve to lean into to soften the fall.&quot; -Brené Brown</em></p>

<p>You have the probability of completing a goal if...</p>
<p>You have an idea or a goal: 10%<br />
You consciously decide you will do it: 25%<br />
You decide when you will do it: 40%<br />
You plan how you will do it: 50%<br />
You commit to someone you will do it: 65%<br />
You have a specific accountability appointment with a person you’ve committed to: 95%</p>
<p>But of course I want you to be comfortable posting too - so if you'd prefer to post part of your challenge or even post a picture of yourself following through with the challenge...you're still making a HUGE commitment and setting yourself up for RESULTS.</p>
<p>INSIGHT + ACTION = RESULTS</p>
