Sometimes we equate having children to having problems!

And that can actually be part of the the issue - how we see our own children. Of course all children have problems. All adults do as well! Yet somehow we get in our heads that our kids should be doing better than we ever did as kids. Or at the very least we expect them to be doing better than they are.

We forget that to learn, to grow, to master, takes repeated practice.

And as we reframe our expectations with that in mind, the Pygmalion Effect kicks in in our favor to work mighty miracles in reconnecting our hearts to theirs so that they feel and know that they belong, that they are beautiful, and that they can overcome.

Our Kids Are Always Watching

How to Motivate Our Kids

This is one of the questions we hear the most from frustrated parents: “How do I motivate my child?” In fact, our 12-year-old daughter just asked us a few days ago what we had done as parents to raise up kids who all get things done. The answer is multi-faceted, and starts with some of the paradigm shifts that we talked about in earlier episodes (see 1 and 2 for example), and in helping each child to discover their genius. It means even encouraging your 6-year-old when he wants to literally climb the walls!

How to Get More Time in the Day

Who doesn’t need more time? Especially with our families. With all the demands on our time, how do we find the time we want to spend time with our family? The secret is our focus - as we choose to appropriately focus on the most important people in our lives, we begin to instill in them self-confidence and trust that things will work out. As that trust grows in our home, the stress of not having enough time dwindles down, and we find joy in each other’s successes and in our struggles as we become more cohesive as a family and empowered to accomplish the most important things.

The day we were told to our face by a professional that we were blowing it as parents was a really hard day. We thought that we were doing a good job, we were certainly trying our best. Eventually we came to understand what he was trying to tell us, that the disappointment we felt in our son for his poor choices was hindering his progress.
