Eryn Eddy Adkins and I have been friends for nearly a decade. She knew me when I was freshly divorced and then remarried… and now divorced again. It’s so sweet to have a friend who has seen you through all the seasons of adulthood, and the story of redemption I’ve seen in Eryn’s life has given me so much hope for the work God is doing in mine.

We cry a lot in this episode – we sat down to record just days after the tremendous heartbreak of lightning striking her parents’ 20,000-square-foot barn. The devastating fire destroyed heirlooms and family photos they’ll never get back. You’ll hear us process through that together. And because we’ve been friends through various dating and marriage contexts, we also talk about fighting to not find our worth in men, and that’s a conversation I think A LOT of women need to hear today.

You ever stumble into a friendship? You meet someone randomly or have a brief encounter with them and then realize that you’ve actually found a meaningful connection? That’s how I feel about Rachel Awtrey.

Rachel had me on her podcast back in 2023 and asked about my marriage during the interview, not knowing I was in the early stages of going through my divorce. After the mics stopped recording, I opened up and asked if we could edit that part out, and Rachel saw me. She kept leaning in when she could have just moved on, and I felt genuinely cared for. Since then, she’s followed the Lord’s prompting to reach out in moments when she didn’t know I needed a tangible reminder of God’s love for me.

We Need a Savior and His People

One thing that has been super consistent in this season of my life is how my community has SHOWN UP for me. God saw fit that out-of-town friends would physically be down the hall when I got the worst phone call of my life. My community furnished my new home and reminded me of my purpose, coaching me through attacks of the enemy when in a moment I believed that the pain would absolutely crush me.

When you come to realize that you’re a sinner, there’s a hopelessness telling you that you aren’t good enough, giving you the tendency to turn to your idols for “fake” peace. We want our idols to soften the suffering. Because we don’t like pain.

Jackie talks about the difficulty of waiting on God to relieve our suffering because His timing is not the same as ours, and also not visible. But it’s when we go to God during our trials that we find authentic peace.

Toni asks Jackie a question that we all want to know the answer to; What’s the difference between getting through something painful and getting over something painful?
