He is positively infectious with his love and knowledge of nursing and has definitely infected me! Our discussion here travels from his entry to nursing and the realizations of gaps between nursing school and nursing practice. This conversation was riveting to me and re-energized me regarding what is possible for nurses as we develop ourselves in our current and upcoming roles post COVID. As a new nurse learning Critical Thinking skills, I was excited to realize this is a key to the success of each nurse. Yet once in a new job, these skills are frequently left behind in the rush of nursing "tasks." Damion's take on training and inspiring new nurses has left me tingling with the possibilities Nurses, working at the TOP of our training, can infuse into the profession to the benefit of patients and colleagues of all kinds. <itunes:summary>I ask Joe Tye and Devin Carr to speak on leadership strategies that are so critical in these extraordinary pandemic times. Joe is head coach and CEO of Values Coach, Inc., and Devin Carr is the Chief Nurse Officer (CNO) for Maine Medical Center. Together they discuss strategies for Healthcare Leaders. In these extraordinary pandemic times when leadership is being invented on the run, it is such a pleasure to hear these two dedicated experienced healthcare leaders, speaking hope, courage, and innovative ideas. They share not only what IS being addressed, but that it CAN be addressed with wisdom, compassion, wit and tenacious support for ALL health providers and employees, despite the challenges. They have lived and are living models of how healthcare MUST be done in the future for it to survive. The title of the show is the title of an award-winning article in Nursing Management Magazine (January 2021) by Joe Tye and Bob Dent, which shares "13 strategies for being more effective leaders and promoting a positive culture in the midst of unprecedented challenges facing today's healthcare environment." (p. 39) I know this episode will inspire you!</itunes:summary>

My guests, Quint Studer and Joe Tye, hold advanced degrees in the practice of humanity, while also carrying the credibility of profound work at the upper levels of Healthcare leadership for a significant amount of time. I brought these two friends together to talk and then let them do just that. It produced a deep and tender interaction between them, edged with the ferocity of their passion for creating humanity in healthcare, while respecting every contributor to making a space for damaged, hurting, diseased and (sometimes) broken individuals to be able to come heal safely. That is NOT the environment that Healthcare is today. They share insights on what MUST happen. This show brought tears of appreciation and hope to my eyes more than once.</itunes:summary>

What Healthcare Leaders Can Do Now To Save Nursing

It is TIME to take action that will be felt at the bedside! We know that HC leaders are working hard (for the most part) to resolve the issues that COVID uncovered and brought to the front of their Priority Lists. Still, many leaders are at a loss as to what TO do. Many, if not most, employees believe nothing is happening and fear they have been abandoned by their leadership. My guest on this episode is Dr. Dan Weberg, Head of Clinical Innovation for Trusted Health in CA and former Guest on OAN 8/3/2020. THIS show is about a Blog that Dan wrote for the Medcity News, July 8, 2021, called “Why the Nursing Profession is in Crisis and What We can Do to Save It.” Dan discusses the state of HC Bedside Nursing and 4 actions that Hospital CNO’s could do NOW to improve trust and provide rest for exhausted healthcare employees. Some of his ideas include: Prioritize nurses in distress AWAY from the bedside; Create CAREER Planning around what the Nurse wishes to do; DROP the Hero label and focus on substantive culture changes; and RETHINK Nurse staffing (our current system never worked and is NOT working now). Learn new options. Please enjoy and share widely!

Dan Weberg, PhD, RN

Dr. Dan Weberg, an expert in nursing, healthcare innovation & human-centered patient design, has clinical experience in ED, Level 1 trauma nursing centers & academia.

Nurse Leaders 2020 Gains, Losses, Learnings - Part 1

This episode is the first of a series of podcasts with incredible CNO’s and Nurse Leaders who exemplified respect, courage and support to nurses in their hospitals. We need to shine a spotlight on how to do this “Right” even in a world Pandemic. This is a fast-paced, packed show with down-and-dirty real pandemic issues, mistakes, innovations and new ideas for the future. The stories that have been told up to this time have, to a large extent have been about massive failures of large healthcare organizations, who have not respected or supported nurses over the past decades and found they had NO idea what TO do to truly help their staff. Dr. Chris Recinos is about as REAL as a nurse leader can possibly be. She is what I call a “Nurse’s Nurse”. She tells us the behind-the-scenes efforts of leaders who were doing impossible preparations/slash support of which MOST staff had NO idea was happening. This episode is a handbook of HOW to lead from the front and taking into consideration the humanity of the people across her system, while doing the same for the nurse leaders surrounding her. PLEASE LISTEN, SHARE, and TALK with others about this show. Listen Next week to Part 2 of the discussion I recorded with Dr. Recinos.

Dr. Chris Recinos is the CEO and founder of Nurse Leader Network, and Tikidas an educational platform for nurses.
