Prayers that Bring Us Home

Exploring the Psalms--the prayer book of the Bible--we learn together the Spiritual Vocabulary of healing, resilience, and praise. Ramona, Gaye, and John lean into the mystery and power of these ancient songs with awe. These prayers were held by an enslaved people through the horrific Exile in Babylon, then crafted, organized, and woven together into sacred meeting space to heal an entire nation and world. These are the prayers that Jesus used, lived into, unveiled, and gave to us to pray together. These are the Prayers that Bring Us HOME
From the San Antonio Mennonite Church, a joyful community that is doing justice, loving mercy, and walking humbly with God in our Southtown neighborhood.

Psalm 22

Our Interpretation of Psalm 22:

Psalm 22

For the director:

Upon the Dawn Deer

A Song of the Beloved

My God, my God,

why have You abandoned me?

Far from my Rescue,

  Far from the words of my groaning.

My God, I call by day:

You do not answer!

by night:

There is no Stillness for me!

YET,

You are Holy,

  enthroned upon the praises of Israel.

In You our ancestors found Security;

   they trusted,

and You Rescued them.

To You they cried

and were Rescued;

in You they trusted

and they were not put to Shame.

YET,

I am a worm,

not a human —

a disgrace among the Mortals of Dust,

  despised by the people.

All who see me mock me;

   they twist their lips

and shake their heads:

“He trusted in YAHWEH—

let God Rescue him;

   let God deliver him,

since God ‘delights’ in him!”

YET,

You drew me out from the womb,

   You made me Rest Secure

on my mother’s breasts.

On You I was entrusted from birth;

   from the womb of my mother

You have been my God.

Do not be far from me,

for distress is near —

there is no one to help!

Many bulls encircle me;

strong ones of Overfed-Power surround me.

They open their mouths against me,

like a lion tearing and roaring.

I am poured out like water;

all my bones are out of joint.

My heart has become like wax —

it melts within my chest.

My strength is dried up like clay;

my tongue clings to my jaws.

You lay me in the dust of Death’s Demand.

Dogs surround me,

a pack of the Violators encircle me!

They pierce my hands and my feet.

I can count all my bones!

They stare and gloat over me.

They divide my garments among them;

They throw dice for my clothing.

YET

You, YAHWEH —

do not be far away!

My Close Strength,

hurry to my Help!

Rescue my Being from the sword,

   my precious life

from the power of the dogs.

Save me from the mouth of the lion,

  and from the horns of the wild oxen —

You have answered me!

I will declare Your Name to my brothers and sisters;

in the midst of the Summoned:

I will Praise You.

You who stand in awe of YAHWEH,

give God praise!

All you in the lineage of Heel-Grabber,

Honor God!

All you in the lineage of Wrestles-With-God

Stand in Awe!

For God has NOT despised or detested

the suffering of the afflicted!

God’s Presence is not hidden from Him,

but when he cried out, God heard Him!

From You comes my Praise

in the Great Summoning;

I will fulfill my vows before those who fear You.

The humble will eat and be satisfied;

those who seek YAHWEH will praise!

  May your hearts live to the Eternity!

All the ends of the earth will Remember and turn to YAHWEH,

and all families of the nations will bow before You,

For the Kingdom belongs to YAHWEH,

and He rules over the empires.

All who prosper on earth will bow before God;

  all who go down to the dust will kneel before God —

  even the one who cannot keep his Being alive!

A Lineage will serve God;

  it will be told of YAHWEH

to the next generation.

They will proclaim the Rescue

to a people yet unborn!

God has done it!

      <itunes:summary>Some prayers feel steady.
Others move like a swing between anguish and trust.

Psalm 22 is a prayer like that.

It begins with a question Jesus Himself prays on the cross:
“My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?”
Not as a statement, but as a cry that opens space for God to respond.

This Psalm does not stay in one place. It moves from suffering to remembrance, from desperation to trust, and finally to a turning point:
“You have answered me.”

At the heart of Psalm 22 is a foundational truth:
God has not despised the suffering of the afflicted.

In this episode, we follow the movement of this prayer and discover that even our hardest questions belong within the life of faith. And we see how Jesus enters this Psalm, carries its suffering, and brings it to fulfillment.

If your prayer feels uncertain, interrupted, or unresolved, you are not outside of faith.
You are inside it.</itunes:summary>

His Persistent-Love

Let those who revere YAHWEH say:
His Persistent-Love

It is better to take refuge in YAHWEH

All nations surrounded me,

YAHWEH is my strength

This is the day
YAHWEH has made.

YAHWEH, cause us to flourish!
We pray.

YAHWEH, cause us to flourish!
We pray.

Blessed is the One
who comes in the name of YAHWEH.

We bless you
from the house of YAHWEH.

YAHWEH is God,
and He has given us light.

Bind the festival sacrifice
with cords
to the horns of the altar.

You are my God,
and I will thank You.

You are my God,
I will lift You up.

Shine-back-to-YAHWEH,
for He is good.

His Persistent-Love

endures to the Eternity.

      <itunes:summary>There are moments when faith feels like it’s not working.
When what you trusted begins to fall apart.
When what you offered is overlooked.
When what you hoped would stand is set aside.

Psalm 118 is a prayer for that moment.

This ancient song gives voice to those who feel surrounded, pressed, and uncertain if anything is holding. It does not rush past distress. It speaks it. And then, it anchors itself in a deeper truth:

“His Persistent-Love endures to the Eternity.”

At the center of this Psalm is a surprising declaration:
“The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.”

In this episode, we explore how Jesus steps into this prayer, becoming the rejected stone who is raised and established by God. And we are invited not to build ourselves up, but to build on Him.

What looks rejected is not wasted.
What feels like failure is not the end of the story.</itunes:summary>

Healing Service: Jars of Messy Water

A Recording of a Healing Service.
45 minutes of mantra prayer together, after a meditation on the settling necessary to live the "Hallelujah":)
John dumps dirt and debris into a glass of water and swirls it around, lid-on tight, light many of us feel when the world, our experiences, and our mistakes are shaking around inside of our beings while we just try to keep it together.
Hallelu-YAH means "to shine with YAHWEH" and how often do we feel opaque, messy, contaminated, or inscrutable?
We need to settle.
Let the waters within us calm, and all the debris settle, so the light of God can shine through and be magnified.
We use these simple prayers to settle.
Ramona repeats them as we breathe:

I am Your child
Take hold of me
Mark 5:41

HOSANNA [Save Us!]
By Your Love [HESED].
Psalm 109

Rescue my Being [NEPHESH]
Heal me with Your Love [HESED]
Psalm 6

After a time a silence, we close with the prayer Jesus teaches us in Matthew 6

What exactly is our Vocation?

We believe a lot of lies about ourselves...
We’ve hear a lot of confusing messagesd
We’re lied to, and we lie to ourselves.
We mistakenly but easily conflate our worth is what we do.
One of our most important beliefs is what we believe about ourselves.
We need to believe that we are Called.
Heather Creamer and John Garland explore this experience of Calling, this "vocalization of God over us," which we refer to as "vocation."

"God, you reign over all. . . let us feel your Strength" This brief and powerful prayer affirms the firm establishment, the forever promise, the stability of God's power... such a vital thing to hold onto in the tumult of brokenness. <itunes:summary>"God, you reign over all. . . let us feel your Strength" This brief and powerful prayer affirms the firm establishment, the forever promise, the stability of God's power... such a vital thing to hold onto in the tumult of brokenness. Our bodies and minds need to hold onto this foundation. This lovely prayer comes within a movement of Psalms in which the Enemy [of all stability] is clearly seen and this promise of eternal trust is so vital.

Psalm 91

"We call upon you, God. . . Be our Refuge" This Psalm is one of the most memorized, recited, and adored in the history of humanity. We love its powerful imagery and promise but also we have a strained relationship with it--knowing it as the Psalm that the Satan used to tempt Jesus (Matt 4 and Luke 4). We pray this Psalm within this movement of Psalms, knowing its power, knowing that Jesus rebuffs the false interpretation by quoting Psalm 95, and knowing that the promises have already come true and we can experience their forever resonance.

"Though we carry all of this hurt. . . We hold Your HESED love forever, God." This roller coaster of voices begins with perfect praise, shifts to God's description and promises of the Messiah, and then finally gathers around the Messiah crying out to God in agonizing misery. This Psalm concludes a movement of Psalms that began in 86 and introduces us to the Messiah's heart and life-arch.

Psalm 88

"YAHWEH I cry out to you. . . through the lonely night." This Psalm comes from the Dark Night of the Soul, the "Desert" time of abandonment and loneliness. We hear the Messiah's voice crying out to God and wonder if there is any hope at all. Yet here is the rhythm of holding on, and continuing to pray, even when everything seems impossible. We find ourselves in the middle of a movement of Psalms that come from the heart and experience of the suffering Messiah.

Psalm 82

"Arise, God, judge the earth! . . . For You possess all the nations." This brief song focuses on the voice of God furiously calling out the gods, or those who pretend to be gods, for neglecting the needy and vulnerable. It is very different tone than Psalm 81 longing love song, but holds the same desire to satisfy and care. Also, this is a Psalm that Jesus quoted in a moment of enormous tension and threatening violence. We explore how to pray this with Jesus...

"God, Help me to listen... Help me to receive your goodness." Psalm 81 is a stunning song that begins with worship and then is mysteriously interrupted by the voice of God. With beautiful and strange images, it is a love song of longing from a God who wants to be heard and known.

Psalm 80

"God, make Your Face shine upon us. . . and we will be saved." Psalm 80 gives us this refrain three times in a meditation on the Shepherd that seems to have abandoned, the vine that seems destroyed forever, and the hope that seems so dim. This Psalm introduces the Messiah's presence, and calls God, "Lord of Armies," a plea for strength and life after the traumatic destruction of Psalm 79... and preparing us for the strange voice in Psalm 81...

Psalm 79

"How long, YAHWEH?. . . Forgive us and Save us!" This stands in stark contrast to the end of Psalm 78, where God has chosen Zion and the dwelling of the temple place--now the temple is destroyed and the communal trauma is overwhelming. This is an emotionally very difficult prayer, and an important guide for the broken spirit to continue crying out to God. The echo of "how long" pulls the spirit to continue searching for the Shepherd.

Psalm 78

"God, Let us not forget your works. . . Help us feel your shepherding hand." Psalm 78 is a MASSIVE history, retelling the Exodus but in an interesting form of cycles, and ending at the place of Zion and God's loving presence. This is an important practice of communal memory but also sets us up for the coming emotional (and theological) conflict of what it means to be "chosen" by God. This Psalm also helps us explore what it means to be "Shepherded."

Psalm 77

"Let me see your Way through the mighty Waters... Help me remember my Song through the Night." Psalm 77 holds the magnificent image of God walking through the overwhelming chaos and turbulence of the Waters. Beginning though, with descriptions of a tortured night, and a failed effort to remember God's presence, this crisis of faith is met with grace, power, and beauty.

"Put the Violence to Sleep, God... Turn our Wrath into Praise." This Psalm is a beautiful response to our desperate need for "vengeance"--when our safety is destroyed and what we love is taken away. The last Psalms bring us to this place of needing to see God's power over everything violent and terrible... and we are left with the image of wrath transformed.

Psalm 73

"Take the bitterness from my heart God. Fill it with your Goodness..." This Psalm opens Book 3 of the prayer book with a way of looking at our hearts, the temptations they face, and an audacious way of presenting them to God. This prayer is beautifully confessional in a world of arrogance and violence.

"Let your Kingdom come, God.
Let your Justice be done..."
This is an Upside-down Coronation Song, celebrating the King of the Kingdom of God.
We talk briefly about the ancient word "mishpat" translated as judgment, justice, and God's will being done.

Psalm 69 is quoted in all of the Gospels--a prayer overwhelmed by the Messiah's voice in utter suffering. This song teaches us to cry out, to curse, to pray fully with Jesus, and to turn into the communion of faith and praise through trauma.

Psalm 68

God, make a Home for the Lonely...
Almighty, make a way through the desert.
This is a "Trauma Praise" song. This ancient prayer is flipping the experiences of military might and power, and guiding hurt people into turning all of the horrible memories and devastation into an experience of praise. The fantastical images and allusions are somewhat intimidating and require quite a bit of trust to let our spirits stir together all of the rage, praise, fear, and hope.

Psalm 67

May your face SHINE upon us... Savior, Show us your Way.
Psalm 67 is a brief but very rich pure praise song in a movement of full praise after some long prayer movements of thirst and desperation. This Psalm explodes with imagery for the early Christian church, and Paul's dangerous journeys across cultural and nation barriers. To get into some of the "nations" talk of this song, it's probably helpful to take a perspective outside citizenship within one of the most powerful nations in history and instead tuck your spirit in among the voices of a tribal nation-state surrounded by the shadows of enormous political entities.
Today, also, we go on a little tour of some of the most important words in Hebrew scripture... we also begin to talk about the "fear" of God (which is less of an emotional state and more of a transformational experience.)

"My Soul, wait in silence only for God
