The Cardinals are 3-0 since I sat behind this microphone and called out the IDIOTS that spent DAYS calling for Pat Kelsey to get fired, because they lost to a top-three team in the country by too many points with their best player still on his way back. But against NC State, that star player in Mikel Brown Jr. had 45 points, 10 threes and nine rebounds just for good measure: tying the school record for points held by Louisville legend Wes Unseld, tying the school record for 3s held by Reyne Smith and breaking the ACC freshman record of 42 set by Cooper Flagg. It was a Clev Lubin-esque Belt To Ass beatdown by all involved, and a hope that some fans will see some positivity in the Cards.

It was a late Christmas for the Cardinals, who came out firing from 3 in the first half and rode the hot hand of Aly Khalifa to build a nine-point lead at halftime. But Duke's halftime adjustments overwhelmed Louisville's, and a new look on defense and more aggressive game plan on offense allowed the Blue Devils to outscore UofL by 20 in the second half.

It was another postgame of complaints about Pat Kelsey's second half adjustments and being able to win big games, but are the criticisms actually valid considering the circumstances? It might be a little too early to sound the panic alarm.

Also, a tough game for the Cardinals at Arkansas as part of the ACC/SEC challenge, just one of those games where you could tell they didn't have it and weren't able claw back in the end. Louisville lost the rebounding battle, points off turnovers and the bench, and to make matters worse, once again lost at the hands of John Calipari.

It was a great way for Miller Moss and the defense to end their seasons, and yet another bright spot for Louisville's running game. While it doesn't make up for all the losses in November, it sure felt good for Cardinal Nation to sweep the basketball and football games for the first time since 2012-13 and Jeff Brohm's third consecutive season with at least eight wins.

For Clemson, the Tigers will have the best defensive line that Louisville has seen since Miami, and a quarterback that hasn't forgotten how to play football despite a dud of a Heisman campaign. The pressure will be back on the defense, and on Miller Moss to respond from losing to Cal.

His throws can be dazzling or disastrous, and the Cardinals No. 1 conference defense will be hoping for more of the latter. Louisville will have some different names in the backfield, with Isaac Brown out with a hamstring injury but Duke Watson probable to be back from a leg injury. With the ACC championship game and College Football Playoff still up for grabs, UofL can hopefully take care of business. And, one more rant on the first CFP rankings, with two more voices to support our arguments from last episode. Andrea Adelson and David Hale on the Inside ACCess show provided more great insight on the stupidity of Miami being eight spots away from Notre Dame, how that impacts Louisville and where the Cards should have actually been ranked.

It's the same ol' song and dance for how the Cardinals win this game that we've been talking about for weeks now. A smart game from Miller Moss, establishing the running game, slaying the dragon that is a dual-threat quarterback, winning the turnover battle and not committing stupid penalties. Louisville is playing meaningful football in November, something that a lot of teams expected to be coming into the season and are no longer. And, some Louisville teams that maybe had more talent or promise or trust, also did not. Because even with all the hemming and hawing that comes on social media after games, the Cards are still 6-1, and still in position to reach all of their goals.

The Cardinals outgained Virginia's top five offense in the country by 180 yards in the air and almost 150 overall, and lost the game. Louisville senior Chris Bell had 12 catches for 170 yards and scored one more touchdown than Virginia did, and still lost the game. Four plays highlight this game's Unwells for UofL: the scoop and score and Pick-Six, the missed field goal to end the first half, and a 3rd and 20 that didn't actually have to happen and resulted in UVA's lone offensive touchdown. Louisville now falls to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the ACC, basically needing to win-out or have a lot of help along the way to make it to the ACC championship game, with Miami the first opponent on deck after another bye week.

Rick Bozich, Legendary Louisville Sports Columnist and Reporter, Joins The Show

Host John Lund chats with recently retired Rick Bozich, who had a legendary career of 50 years in sports media and was a longtime Louisville sports columnist and reporter before his retirement from WDRB-TV on July 1st of this year. He got his start writing for the Indiana University Bloomington student newspaper in college before graduation in 1975 went on stops in Anderson and Bloomington, Indiana before landing in Louisville at The Courier-Journal in 1978 and also covering high school sports for The Louisville Times in 1979 before their merger in 1986. Rick ended up as The Courier-Journal's sports columnist in 1981 and had a three-plus decade career covering what sports fans could only dream of, maintaining that position until 2012. That included more than 30 Final Fours, including three Louisville national championships, 15 Super Bowls, 11 World Series, one NBA Finals and three summer Olympics, just to name a few. He then moved on to the TV world with WDRB and his show with fellow scribe Eric Crawford, while also serving as the station's columnist and commenter. He's been featured in the New York Times and Sports Illustrated, was a recurring guest on ESPN Sports Reporters (RIP), a correspondent for the Kentucky Derby on Westwood One Radio and is a member of the U.S. Basketball Writers Association, Indiana Sportswriters and Sportscaster Association and Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame. We'll talk about getting started in sports writing and covering basketball in the state of Indiana, some stories from the road, including covering both Bob Knight and Lee Corso while in college (and some slight differences in those personalities), continuing to evolve in sports media, rooting for the same baseball team as the Pope, what he might do next and of course, memories from his many years around Louisville athletics and fans.

Louisville Fall Sports Check-In #2

Louisville's men's soccer team, now ranked No. 6 in the country, remains unbeaten on the season and still hasn't allowed a goal after upsetting No. 1 Stanford last Friday and blanking Ohio State 1-0 on Tuesday for their fifth win. Women's soccer is now 7-1 after closing out its six-game homestand unbeaten with another shoutout, taking down Dayton 2-0 on Sunday night. In women's volleyball, Louisville was on the national stage on Wednesday night on ESPN in a clash of Top Ten teams as the No. 4 Cardinals played the No. 2 ranked Texas Longhorns at the Shriners Children's Showdown in Fort Worth, Texas. What a clash it was, lasting all five sets with Texas making a comeback in the final set to win by two and take the match, 3-2, handing the Cards their first loss of the season. In field hockey at Indiana on Sunday, Louisville used goals from five different players to pick up a 5-4 win, improving to 3-1 on the season. Men's tennis will host the Louisville Invitational for the second year in a row starting this Friday and running through Sunday, September 14. And, the men's basketball conference schedule was announced, check it out on somewhere on the ol' internet.

Louisville vs. James Madison Additional Recap With JMU Alumni, And ACC Football After Week 2

Some major storylines showed up during the James Madison game, including JMU playing two quarterbacks and their stout defense against the Cards offense. Included is commentary from James Madison legends Delvin Joyce and Vad Lee from To The House, part of the JMU Sports News Network. Joyce walked on at James Madison in 1997 and played runningback there until 2000, eventually getting selected into their Athletics Hall of Fame in 2014. He was the first player in Division 1-AA and second in all of Division 1 to reach 1,000 career yards in all four statistical categories of rushing, receiving, punt returns and kickoff returns. Vad Lee was a dual-threat quarterback who transfer from Georgia Tech and played for James Madison in 2014 and 2015. He was the first back-to-back winner of the Bill Dudley Award, which honors the state's best Division 1 player for both FBS and FCS. He was also the two-time Male Student Athlete of the Year for JMU and tied the school record for all-time passing touchdowns with 51, despite starting just 21 games, and is second all-time in total offense and third in passing yards and completions. All that to say, the guys know a thing or two about James Madison football and do a great job. They discussed JMU head coach Bob Chesney's decision to play two quarterbacks and how that impacts an offense, what the Dukes could have done differently and how the defense held down the Cardinals offense. Also, a not-so-great update on Stanquan Clark's injury, where Louisville falls in the AP Top 25 poll after Week 2 and how Vegas views the Cards after the 2-0 start. Howard Stevens, Louisville Athletics Hall of Famer Who Played For Lee Corso Joins The Show

Host John Lund talks to Howard Stevens, a member of the Louisville Athletics Hall of Fame, who played under head coach Lee Corso back in 1971 and 1972 before a five-year NFL career. Topics include how he got into playing football as one of the first black students to integrate into Harrisonburg High School in Virginia back in 1964, playing for the lone school that seriously recruited him at Division III Randolph-Macon College and leading the nation in rushing as a freshman, why he left for Louisville after two years and his playing days and relationship with Lee Corso, success with the Cardinals, getting drafted in the 16th(!) round into the NFL as one of the shortest players in league history and playing behind Archie Manning as part of his five-year career for the Saints and Colts, life after football, meeting his now wife and a philosophy of whenever life gives you a chance, making it count. He rushed for more than 5,000 yards in his four-year collegiate career, which at the time set the record for rushing in all divisions of college football. But more important than his stats or individual accolades like having his number retired or Hall of Fame inductions for high school and both colleges among others, what mattered most was his team winning football games, and that they did. In four years of college football, Howard Stevens only lost five games, one of which still sticks with him to this day. It was a playing career and life well lived, and certainly still is now each and every day.

Louisville Basketball Defeats Florida State and The State of The Basketball Program

Louisville Basketball defeated Florida State on Saturday night to break a 6-game losing skid, as the Cardinals won 101-92 in the KFC Yum Center. The Louisville women's team also defeated Syracuse 81-69 last week, while the Louisville football team gained another recruit for the 2025 recruiting class.
