We first met d.b.h. when he took the Breakin Bread crew on a tour of Austria many years ago, we quickly became good friends and now he regularly jets over to London for our Brentford Soul Allstars nights and sessions with the Beirut Groove Collective.

d.b.h. was one of the stars of the Austrian hip hop scene in the 90's and he's now a celebrated DJ and a producer with Restless Leg Syndrome crew

When we say new Funk we’re talking about Funk made since the late '90s by bands, producers and labels that were celebrating the Funk sound from the '70s but re-imagining it for the millennial generation. Vintage sounds played in a new way by artists who maybe only got to know about Funk from checking all the samples used by Hip-Hop artists.

This time round we have DJ D.B.H, a long time friend of ours from Vienna, Austria. D.B.H took BB on a mini tour of Austria many years ago and we got to know the guy and his deep skills and vinyl knowledge. Since then we've spun together a few times and it's great to be spinning with him again.

On this mix D.B.H spins soul in the form of slow to medium disco with some hip-hop edits thrown in. Well known and deep cuts complement each other nicely

A mix to mark 25 years of Breakin Bread!

In May 1998, we held the first Breakin Bread club night at the Brix in Brixton. The club spawned a record label, radio shows and numerous gigs all round the world. Due to family commitments we no longer release records but we’re still doing events and radio shows...yep, we’re STILL ROCKIN’!

To mark our quarter-century anniversary we’ve asked DJ’s that have contributed to our radio shows over the years to create celebratory mixes. The first of these mixes is from our great friend in Vienna DJ d.b.h. who thought it was only right to put together a mix of his favourite tunes from the Breakin Bread label over the years

"About ten years ago I heard an old 70’s soul tune that had the most bonkers drum ’n’ bass-style drum solo in in it, and it got me thinking – What other dusty old records from the seventies had these kinda ‘proto-jungle’ drum grooves in? Ever since, I’ve been putting any funk, soul, rock, prog, jazz, psych, exotica and library tracks to one side that fit the brief. And, recently, I’d found enough for a mixtape. So, here it is – Jungle Funk. Over an hour of deep dug breaks and beats from the four corners of the globe. All cut up by me, with a load of spoken word, rave tape pack, TV and film samples thrown in over the top for added jungalistic context. Rewiiiiiind, my selecta!"

We've been running Breakin Bread since we first started putting on nights in 1998, 25 years, that's a long time and we've put on a lot of nights over the years

As we get older we figured its time to put on a low key night in our local area. If you fancy a night out in a decent pub with good people, good vibes and top notch music then come and join us

In advance of our second party, Steve The Sleeve put together this mix of what you can expect to hear down the pub - all things related to soul with a bit of funk, disco, breaks & beats all thrown into the mix

Criztoz is the creator of 45 Day which celebrates the humble 7" record. Happening on the 4th of May it showcases 45 minute all 45s mixes from around the World

As part of the Original 45ers and head of the live streams for the Forty FIve KIngs Collective co-hosting the weekly saturday morning show Coffee and Donuts.

Criztoz also hosts a number of twitch talk shows. "Part of my Journey" features Criztoz talking with other DJ's about mental health, depression, anxiety, stroke, emotional abuse and more.

In "All back to mine" he invites guests to chat and pick out 7 of their choice 7s.

He also hosts the 45 Kids talk show with his 7 year old daughter Zizi45 who came up with the idea of the 45 Kids - kids spinning 45s. The shows are in aid of Jessie's Fund a UK music therapy charity which helps children in hospices and with special needs.

A guest mix from Nimble Fingered Primate Shaolin Monkey who has been tearing up the festival circuit for the last 15 years, he is a resident at Kendal Calling festival as well as Bluedot. Inspired by the golden era of NY Loft parties and early Hip Hop block parties he is a keen record collector / selector which is heard in his DJ sets combining everything from Funk, Soul, Disco & Boogie to Hip Hop, Jazz and Rare Groove with the whole emphasis around playing good music and having a good time!!

Shaolin has held many different club nights mainly under the banner ROCKSTEADY in the North West and been on radio stations world wide. He’s supported and played alongside artists such as Public Enemy, DJ Yoda, Snoop Dogg, Mr Thing, Pendulum, Mouse outfit.

Due to COVID and government guidelines unfortunately Kendal Calling was not able to celebrate its 15th year in the fields on the 29th July so as a homage to the festival Breakin Bread decided it was only right to release his exclusive mix for us over the festival period for the people that couldn't make it to the fields..

25 THC is the creator of 45 Day which celebrates the humble 45rpm 7" single with DJ's from around the world contributing 45 minute all 45s mixes. The offshoot to this is his 45 Day Radio show twice monthly on Mixcloud featuring special guest DJ's. Pre-lockdown he was out and about DJing at Bars, Cafes, art galleries and festivals as part of the Original 45ers. During lockdown he has become a moderator for the Forty Five Kings and head of their live streams. In July with Mr Lob he ran a 24 hour worldwide live stream on Twitch featuring 25 DJ's from around the globe playing just 45s. This has been followed by live streams from Germany, Australia, Glasgow, Norwich, Romania and an all female DJ 12 hour live stream - 45 Queens. Rob Life is one of the founders of Breakin Bread and for ages we’ve been trying to persuade him to do a new Breakin Bread mix. However, he’s a busy man so we don’t have one yet.

So we figured its about time to post up one of Rob’s classic B-Boy mixes so here is Catchin’ Grooves a mix we put out 15 years ago!

In the true spirit of hip-hop’s originators Rob Life cuts up 2 copies of records with a b-boy flavour taken from a myriad of different musical styles. This mix takes in funk, soul, boogie, rock, latin, afro, jazz, country and more.

This mix was made with the dancer in mind, its varying tempos and musical content is aimed at b-boys with flavour and versatility in their steps.
