So, do you ever wonder about the behind the scenes of The Canna Mom Show? How did we find Dave? Why do we have the intro we do? How does all the magic of podcast distribution work? What are the challenges of social media and cannabis? What could the future look like for The Canna Mom Show? And what will I be doing next year? Well, today you’re going to find out answers to all those questions and more.

Today we are inviting my canna bro David Yas to reminisce about the early days of TCMS and what we’ve learned. Also, if you have ever wanted to do your own podcast, we are going to ask Dave for a few pointers and how Pod617 could be a great place for you to start.

And we’re talking with Kristin Souza whose been working with TCMS this year on our social media and marketing. She’s going to talk about what she’s learned about podcasting this year and how she’s planning to continue TCMS conversations in the future.

And if that were not enough, in addition we are also excited to talk with Dr. Benjamin Caplan about his work educating the medical world on cannabis and the podcast he’s pitching and I’m hoping to contribute to.

Culture Corner: So, I am not a comic book fan, but I do appreciate the art of storytelling. And I’m Jewish, and always love to support my people. And I’m from Boston, so I had to give a shout out to The Writer, a comic book set in Boston and rooted in Jewish folklore. Created by brothers Ben and Max Berkowitz of the Legal Sea food dynasty, but it was their paternal grandfather, Nathan Glick, who inspired their love of comic books. The brothers teamed up with Grammy-winning and Tony-nominated actor Josh Gad to create the graphic novel. I have not read it, but I love the idea of taking deep Jewish folklore that’s been around for thousands of years and making it like an Indiana Jones adventure. They are celebrating Jewish identity and its broad array, and I think it’s an important story for our times. The Writer, a comic book, available now.

A truly moving story and timely given the rise in hate around the world. It is a story about why each one of us has the power to help others and that we may never understand the impact we have on this world with acts of kindness. The One Life movie is about an ordinary man who found out over 40 years later how impactful his actions were in saving those children.

Caroline has also become a major influencer in women empowerment, philanthropy and industry inclusivity. In 2022 she conceived and executed the first Green Goddess Invitational and she’s here today to talk about what’s happening in 2024!

Caroline has also focused a spotlight on the unfair local impact fees here in Massachusetts and supports advocacy for communities disproportionately harmed by the war on drugs.  

Of course, this busy mom is also a foundational board member for Northern Essex Community College, and in 2022 helped launch the college’s progressive cannabis curriculum.  Joyce speaks with Caroline from Haverhill, Massachusetts where she lives with her husband, Adam, their daughter, their son, and two big happy hound dogs.

International Cannabis News: RABAT (Reuters) – It was announced that Morocco's first legal cannabis harvest was 294 metric tons in 2023, after the country approved its cultivation and export for medicine and industrial uses, cannabis regulator ANRAC said. The harvest was made by 32 cooperatives that brought together 430 farmers covering 277 hectares in the northern Rif mountain areas of Al Houceima, Taounat and Chefchaouen, ANRAC said in an email to Reuters.

Joyce met Judi in Vegas at the Feminine Forward Talks, where Judi also shared the beautiful flower she grows. On today’s show Judi shares her unique and inspirational canna journey, explains the amazing retreats she is offering this summer, and talks about why she is so grateful to finally be able to speak openly about the cannabis plant.

Joyce also gives a shout out to an event being held in her hometown of Cambridge, MA on Tuesday, March 19th  at a lovely  restaurant, Urban Hearth, in collaboration with The Green Lady dispensay, a MA based, woman owned, black owned cannabis dispensary in Nantucket and Newton Center. It is a multi-course educational and inspirational evening hosted by the mother-daughter team of Nicole and Clea Campbell of The Green Lady who, like us, are trying to change how people perceive cannabis and raise awareness about the different ways cannabis can help heal our bodies and minds.

Julianna launched into the new world of CBD for pet care in 2013 when she established Treatibles, a pet line of hemp-derived CBD products. Treatibles is dedicated to producing top-quality CBD-infused products specifically designed for pets. But she is so much more. Julianna now resides in Tennessee to be closer to the hemp world, but her journey began in the medical market of Northern California with not just brownies but unique savory products as well. Joanne is currently focused on the strategic objectives for Rooted In, which include launching delivery and creating a customer experience area for special events. In addition to her work in cannabis, she is an advocate for equity as it relates to Black Maternal health and prides herself in giving back to her community and hopes to leave the world better than she found it.

Before launching her canna entrepreneurship, Joanne worked in hospital finance and at an investment firm. She shares with Joyce the story of her canna journey, her work supporting her community and how it feels to be a canna mom.

Their cultivation cannabis business is harnessing the great powers of nature and the knowledge that comes with decades of legacy cannabis experience, as Paper Crane grows terpene-rich organic flower that is deeply rooted in both sustainability and social justice.

Annie is a habitual cannabis consumer and throughout the story cannabis is normalized and accepted along with the unfolding story of Annie’s secrets, to upend the stigmas that have been created around cannabis use.

Dr. Morris is certified by the National Board of Neurological Surgeons. Her career spans a myriad of specialties including Neurological Surgery, Trauma, Complex Orthopedic Spinal Surgery, and Emergency Medicine.Dr. Morris has been a long-time proponent of medical cannabis and was an early supporter of California’s Proposition 215, which first legalized medical marijuana treatment for patients in 1996. 

On today’s show she shares with Joyce how her work at a local trauma center led to her understanding that medical cannabis is a viable and beneficial treatment option for many patients who seek to improve their quality of life.

Joyce also speaks with Nurse Lisa Capitani about her Mindful Metrics: Conscious Cannabis Consumption Tracking Journal, now available on Amazon. This journal is designed for both the seasoned cannabis user and those just beginning their exploration, to optimize the therapeutic potential of cannabis.

LEVIA was founded in 2017 by Kristin and her husband with the goal of producing cannabis products rooted in wellness, offering a replacement for alcohol, and ensuring a long-lasting legacy of fighting to end the stigma that has devastated the lives of so many in our communities. LEVIA went to market in March of 2021 giving Massachusetts consumers a zero calorie, zero sugar, fast onset, effects-based way to enjoy cannabis. Kristin is now the brand manager for LEVIA and is using her steady and clear voice to promote ending the stigma, giving hope to those in need and advocating for much-needed cannabis research.

Kristin and Joyce talk about her canna business journey, her own story of healing and, of course, why as a canna mom she is so passionate about breaking the stigma by normalizing the use of cannabis and educating her children.

Tori Moline discovered she has a genetic pregnancy condition, called Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG), in 2021. The severe nausea and vomiting were not relieved by the multiple pharmaceuticals prescribed to her, but she found relief with cannabis. Tori discovered that cannabis improved her quality of life by increasing her appetite and decreasing her vomiting – but she kept this knowledge from her doctor and family out of fear and stigma. As a former history teacher, she took it upon herself to learn the history of cannabis and came to understand that the plant was not the devil but rather a miracle for medicinal use.

Tori was inspired to help others, so she built her @GoldenTeacherTori platforms around educating moms about HG & Plant Medicine. Tori has founded a community of mom's working towards changing HG care and normalizing cannabis use during an HG pregnancy. The most recent episode is focused on the NRA, and it’s a reminder of how a true believer can shape the narrative to create their vision of reality. The men who transformed the NRA in the 1980s from a group focused on sportsmanship and gun safety had a vision to make it all about distorting the 2nd amendment, and this has now become our national nightmare. We now live in a country with evangelized true believers who have organized their lives around a lethal weapon.

Nurse Katie is a committed patient advocate and an active member of the American Cannabis Nurses Association, the Society of Cannabis Clinicians, the, the International Association of Psychedelic Nurses, Chicago NORML, and the Illinois Cannabis Equity Coalition. She is honored to serve as an appointed member of the Illinois Medical Cannabis Advisory Board and a member of the Clinical Education Council for the Illinois Psychedelic Society.

Nurse Katie believes that cannabis should be a first-line alternative, not a last resort - especially when many commonly prescribed drugs have potentially dangerous or deadly side effects. To date, she has worked with over 1000 medical cannabis patients and their families, assisting them to utilize this treatment safely and successfully.

Amie Carter is a mom on a mission. In 2018 Amie petitioned to list Autism as a qualifying condition for medical cannabis in Michigan after utilizing cannabis to help her son, and she has become a dedicated activist for cannabis for families in similar situations. Amie hopes to make access to cannabis and use easier across our country by working to help pediatric and adolescent patients gain the same equal rights as those who use traditional prescribed medicine. Amie’s dedication to helping others guided her to be a candidate for the Michigan State House of Representatives in 2022 and she continues to invest her voice in the ongoing cannabis conversations in Michigan.

Mskindness B.Ramirez is an industry veteran and  master educator. She is the CEO of Club Kindness, a representative media network built to educate families, foster connections and sustain communities for social change. Mskindness is fueled by over twenty-years in the public education sector and the passionate desire to share inclusive health practices with her community. Joyce also asks her the story behind  her wonderful children’s book, “The Root Family’s Very Special Garden.”

Alex DeGroot and Chris Vining are cofounders of The Goods dispensary in Somerville, Massachusetts. Alex came to cannabis after a career in real estate where he helped to build the Redfin brand and northeast operations. Chris previously had a career in bio medical devices and software. 

Alex oversees the goods arts and community initiatives and can often be found re-arranging demo products or dreaming up a better pre-roll display. He is the father of two and feels extremely lucky to have a wife who has put up with him through the roller coaster ride of opening a new dispensary.  

And Chris is the  resident regulatory and paperwork whiz, overseeing all of the complex financial management and planning that goes into building a successful business and dispensary.

In 2018, when Canada became the first G7 country to federally legalize cannabis at the recreational level, Elizabeth saw an opportunity to support a stigma-free cannabis lifestyle and cultivate a globally connected cannabis positive community. So she jumped from 25 years as a writer and director in film and television to build HiBnB, an online marketplace dedicated to growing the cannabis community by providing four pillars of engagement.

Joyce speaks with Elizabeth about creating HiBnB, the importance of having a mom with entrepreneurial passion, and what it’s like to be a pioneer in the burgeoning canna tourism world.

Alice’s work as an early entrepreneur in the cannabis industry has led to her to  being a guest on a multitude of news outlets and was named one of the 100 Most Important Women in Cannabis for 2019 by Green Market Report, and just last week Global Cannabis Times nominated her as one of the Top 100 most influential people in Cannabis.

Alice also speaks on the subject of  Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome, something she unfortunately knows a great deal about, and how it felt to be part of a campaign to bake the world’s largest Pot Brownie.

TCMS Culture Corner: The Abortion Talks,by filmmakers Sarah Perkins and Josh Saber. This documentary focuses on the secret talks between leaders from opposing sides of the abortion debate in the aftermath of John Salvi’s 1994 murder spree at two Brookline, Massachusetts clinics. These women leaders met in secret for over six years to find a way to have civil discourse and change the trajectory of the violence spreading across Massachusetts. This film is not yet available in theaters or on-line, but is available for private viewings.

If  you don’t know Ayanna Pressley’s story you can listen to this great interview on WBUR with Tiziana Dearing where Congresswoman Pressley talks about how her mom was so important for her becoming the trail blazer she is, the struggles and joys of Boston politics, and about breaking the concrete ceilings in politics – right here in Massachusetts.

Kim Napoli is a licensed labor and employment attorney in Massachusetts, the co-founder of The Hempest, and a Massachusetts Cannabis Advisory Board member. Kim also served as the Director of Outreach for the Yes on 4 Campaign to Regulate and Tax Marijuana in Massachusetts way back in 2016.

Together they are building a strong and connected cannabis community while also challenging the “community impact” fees imposed on local Massachusetts cannabis dispensaries.

Kim and Caroline share with Joyce their own canna-mom journeys, an overview of the important work they are both involved with, and why they felt compelled to challenge the Host Agreement “community impact fee” and what will change when they win their case.
