Our heroes solved the horrific mystery of the sanitary sewer overflows in the fabled city of Waterdeep and saved several citizens from a fate worse than death (i.e. overwatering their lawns)!

Papermaking with Laura Post

On today’s episode of H2OMG I take a trip to the studio of local papermaker and printmaker, Laura Post. And if you’re wondering what papermaking has to do with water, well don’t worry because we cover that pretty early in our talk, and, as it turns out, water is pretty important to papermaking.

Laura has also been experimenting with making paper from plants that are considered invasive in our North Texas environment, and you know we here at H2OMG are all about getting rid of non-native plants and replacing them with Native plants. They’ll look better and require less water than non-native pants because, duh, they are native to this environment.

Rita and I discuss the unique job of a music librarian and all the awesome (and virtual) events happening all the time at the Fort Worth Public Library. Conserving Water at Home, Featuring Lorena!

Lorena and John-Michael hit “the streets” to talk with people about how they conserve water at home!

You may remember Lorena from episode 12, The Next Generation of Water Hero. Lorena is Hilda’s daughter, and you may remember Hilda from a bunch of episodes including the one we just did on the Mandy Moore movie, 47 Meters Down.

Lorena had a day off from school last October and she wanted to roam the streets with a microphone to find out how people save water at home. It was a great idea that Lorena had and it would have worked except it started raining the very moment we stepped outside. Plus it was really cold. Nobody wanted to talk to us or even take the free candy we walked around with in a plastic pumpkin. (It was right before halloween so it wasn’t weird). So we ended up roaming around city hall and talking to people inside and getting some great tips on how to conserve water at home.

On Drippy’s Drive-In episodes of H2OMG we talk about movies that feature water prominently. And this week’s movie has the most water per capita of ANY movie we’ve covered so far, I GUARANTEE IT!

The movie we discuss is 47 Meters Down starring Mandy Moore and a bunch of other people we didn’t bother to look up! Almost the entire movie takes place underwater when Mandy Moore and her sister get trapped 47 meters below the surface of the ocean (hence the title) in a shark cage and they’re running out of air! Did we mention they don’t even know how to scuba dive? Because they definitely don’t.

Will Mandy survive the deadly sharks? Will Stewart (her ex boyfriend) take her back? Will you remember any of the character’s names? Probably not.

This episode includes MAJOR SPOILERS so be sure to watch the movie first unless you’re like Michele and actually like spoilers. Weirdo.

FIG, ROSEMARY & RED WINE JAM RECIPE

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups (375 ml) Merlot or other fruity red wine
2 Tbsp. (30 ml) fresh rosemary leaves
2 cups (500 ml) finely chopped fresh figs
3 Tbsp. (45 ml) Ball Classic Pectin
2 Tbsp. (30 ml) bottled lemon juice
2 1/2 cups (625 ml) sugar

Steps

Bring wine and rosemary to a simmer in a small stainless steel or enameled saucepan. Turn off heat; cover and steep 30 minutes.
Pour wine through a fine wire-mesh strainer into a 4-qt.(4-L) stainless steel or enameled saucepan. Discard rosemary. Stir in figs, pectin, and lemon juice. Bring mixture to a full rolling boil that cannot be stirred down, over high heat, stirring constantly.
Add sugar, stirring to dissolve. Return mixture to a full rolling boil. Boil hard 1 minutes stirring constantly. Remove from heat. Skim foam, if necessary.
Ladle hot jam into a hot jar, leaving 1/4-inch (.5-cm) headspace. Remove air bubbles. Wipe jar rim. Center lid on jar. Apply band, and adjust to fingertip-tight. Place Jar in boiling-water canner. Repeat until all Jars are filled.
Process jars 10 minutes, adjusting for altitude. Turn off heat; remove lid, and let jars stand 5 minutes. Remove Jars and cool.

Hydrogeology with Dr. Robert Mace

Robert has a B.S. in Geophysics and an M.S. in Hydrology from the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology and a Ph.D. in Hydrogeology from The University of Texas at Austin.

Holiday Special: Season of Giving!

It’s the season of giving and we wanted to highlight some of the ways you can give back to the Fort Worth community.

First we talk with Marie Francis, the Human Services Manager for Community Action Partners. CAP has a ton of programs to serve people in Tarrant County, too many to mention here, but you can find a list of them, their requirements, and how to apply on their website at http://fortworthtexas.gov/cap/. Marie also talks in detail about a few of these programs, including our water bill assistance program.

Then we take a trip to the Fort Worth Animal Shelter to talk with Jessica Brown, the Shelter’s Superintendent. We talk about all the ways that you can help the Animal Shelter including volunteering, donating, and, of course, adopting! They have an exciting, and awesomely named, adoption event starting on December 12th called the 12 Strays of Christmas. It runs through Christmas and all adoptions will cost you only $12. Ep 11: Swim Safe! 2 Seconds is 2 Long

On this episode of H2OMG I visit Starrett Keel, a firefighter and fire safety educator with the Fort Worth Fire Department, and a volunteer with the Fort Worth Drowning Prevention Coalition or FWDPC. We talk about why Texas ranks second state in the nation for fatal drownings and why Tarrant County leads the state in pediatric drownings. We also talk about how all the wonderful volunteers with the Drowning Prevention Coalition are using their Swim Safe program to educate kids and parents about water safety.

Then I take a trip to an actual Swim Safe class at the Marine Park pool. You’ll hear a little bit of the classes and get a feel for what they’re like. I didn’t get this on the recording but the first thing the 3 year olds do is read a book about water safety and IT IS adorable. I also got to talk with Pam Canell, the Executive Director of the FWDPC for a few minutes (she was extremely busy, as you can imagine).

Thanks to Starrett, Pam, and all the wonderful people who volunteer with the FWDPC for letting me come out and helping to spread the word.
