"Joshua Chamberlain and the Civil War; At Every Hazard", was published in 2015, in which Emmett Collins grows into manhood during the Civil War. "I am Cuba" was published in 2020. It was recently awarded the silver award for historical fiction from Kops-Fetherling. Cost has also published the Mainely Mystery series including "Mainely Power" (the MHC Read ME fiction book of the year), "Mainely Fear", and "Mainely Money". The fourth book in the series, "Mainely Angst", will be published in January of 2022. He has begun the Clay Wolfe/Port Essex Trap series with "Wolfe Trap" and "Mind Trap" "Mouse Trap" will be published in the spring of 2022 and "Cosmic Trap" in the fall of 2022. Cost now lives in Brunswick, Maine, with his wife, Harper. There are four grown children: Brittany, Pearson, Miranda, and Ryan. A chocolate Lab and a basset hound round out the mix. He now spends his days at the computer, writing.

Edmund Pickett was born and raised in the Rocky Mountain region of the western United States, in a town of 12,000 people. I've tried living in more crowded places, such as Denver, or Atlanta, but after a year or two I always end up back in the high plains, where the antelope greatly outnumber the people. I've worked the usual jobs that writers end up with--cook, cowboy, roughneck, ambulance driver-- but mainly I've been a land surveyor, specializing in remote areas of the west and also Alaska, where I've helped to build airstrips, pipelines, gold mines and power plants. I like land surveying in the bush because it's outdoor work and there are few people and very little noise.

For the last decade I've spent half of every year in Latin America. My first novel is about drug smugglers in Texas and Mexico. For research on that book I crossed the border alone, at night. You can read my blog post about that experience on my website, edmundpickett.com/Swimming The Rio Grande. My second novel is about Islamic terrorists and the FBI agent who is chasing them. The third novel that I've published, Following Joshua Carpenter, was actually the first I wrote, many years ago. No publisher was interested then, but now we have the internet, and the book is finding its audience.

Upon revisiting New Mexico, doing research for his second novel, Death Waits in the Dark, he had the wonderful opportunity to meet with some of the Navajo people and have an open and respectful conversation. My guest to today is Joseph Wambaugh. Joe is a bestselling American writer known for his fictional and non-fictional accounts of police work in the United States. Several of his first novels were set in Los Angeles, California, and its surroundings, and featured Los Angeles police officers as protagonists. He has been nominated for 4 Edgar Awards (winning 3), and was named a Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America.

The son of a police officer, Wambaugh was born in East Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He joined the United States Marine Corps at age 17 and married at 18. Wambaugh received an associate of arts degree from Chaffey College and joined the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) in 1960. He served for 14 years, rising through the ranks from patrolman to detective sergeant. He also attended California State University, Los Angeles, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees.

My guest today is Frank Zafiro Frank served in the U.S. Army from 1986-91 in Military Intelligence as a Czechoslovak linguist. In 1993, he became a police officer in Spokane, Washington. During his career, he worked as a patrol officer, corporal, and detective before entered into leadership roles, becoming a sergeant in 2002. He was fortunate enough to command patrol officers, investigators, K-9 officers (and their dogs!), and the SWAT team. Frank retired from law enforcement in 2013 as a captain in order to write full time and to teach. From 2013-17, he taught law enforcement subject matter at the community college and university, and leadership as a national instructor for a prominent police institution. He also occasionally teaches a series of writing workshops. Frank earned a BA in History from Eastern Washington University in 1998, and an MS in Administration of Justice from the University of Louisville in 2012. Frank began writing seriously at about thirteen. In 1995, he started a draft of Under A Raging Moon, which would become the first book in the River City series of crime fiction. Since then, Frank has completed multiple novels set in River City, a fictional version of Spokane, Washington, such as the Stefan Kopriva mystery series. In 2001, Bill started the Illinois Innocence Project at the University of Illinois at Springfield (UIS). His investigation of wrongful conviction cases began with his work in the Nicarico case in 1988 that lead to the exoneration of Rolando Cruz and Alejandro Hernandez, who had been sentenced to die for a murder committed by serial killer, Brian Dugan. As a defense investigator, Bill worked with Ed Cisowski, a zone commander for the Illinois State Police and developed tire track evidence that linked Dugan to the murder of Jeanine Nicarico. Paul Kemprecos' fiction-writing career owes its start to the bad navigation of an 18th-century pirate. For it was in 1717 that a ship named Whydah went aground off Cape Cod, reportedly carrying a fabulous treasure. Samuel Bellamy, the ship's captain, was drowned along with most of the crew. In the 1980s, three salvage groups went head-to-head, competing to find the wreck. He was working for a newspaper covering the treasure hunt. The controversy over the salvage got hot at times, and he thought there might be a book based on the story. He developed my own detective, an ex-cop, diver, fisherman, and PI named Aristotle "Soc" Socarides. He was more philosophical than hard-boiled. His first appearance was in "Cool Blue Tomb," which won the Shamus Award for Best Paperback novel. After many years in the newspaper business, I turned to writing fiction and churned out five more books in the series. Clive Cussler blurbed: "There can be no better mystery writer in America than Paul Kemprecos." Several months after the release of "Bluefin Blues," Clive called and said a spin-off from the Dirk Pitt series was in the works. It would be called the NUMA Files, and he wondered if I would be interested in tackling the job. I took on the writing of "Serpent," which brought into being Kurt Austin and the NUMA Special Assignments Team. Austin had some carry-over from Soc, and another team member, Paul Trout, had been born on Cape Cod. The book made The New York Times bestseller list, as did every one of seven NUMA Files that followed, including "Polar Shift," which bumped "The Da Vinci Code" for first place. After eight NUMA Files, He went back to writing solo. He wrote an adventure book entitled, "The Emerald Scepter," which introduced a new hero, Matinicus "Matt" Hawkins. In 2013, He brought Soc back again in a seventh Socarides book entitled, "Grey Lady." After that book, he wrote a sequel to the first Matt Hawkins book, entitled, "The Minoan Cipher," which was nominated for a Thriller Award in the Best Paperback category for 2017 by the International Thriller Writers. The eighth Soc book, "Shark Bait," incorporates the aforementioned story of the Whydah, its doomed captain Samuel Bellamy, and his lover, Mary Hallett. His wife Christi and he live on Cape Cod where she works as a financial advisor. They share a circa 1865 farmhouse with two cats. They have three children and seven granddaughters. Bruce's interest in Missing Persons began terribly and abruptly on March 19, 2004. His 17 year old daughter, Brianna Maitland, went missing. Life changed from that point on for him. A living hell that no parent should ever go through. In the years since, the endless searching and sleepless nights, not knowing where or what happened to her has taken its toll and continues to this day. In the last few years the idea was brought to Bruce by his friend and private investigator Greg Overacker- (who has donated much time and energy to assisting finding Brianna) to start the Private Investigations For The Missing foundation. It is a unfortunate reality that police have limited resources and time, and private investigators can sometimes get answers from people unwilling to speak to police. It is also an unfortunate reality that the costs of private investigators are beyond the ability of most people to afford. Dale is a former Deputy District Attorney and personal injury attorney. He has conducted 181 criminal and civil jury trials. He has also taught Forensic Science and 4th Amendment law at local colleges. For his work, Mitchell has received more than 30 national awards.
