Bukola Saraki
The third-most-powerful political office holder in the country has to be the biggest upset. Not only is the 56-year-old the current Senate president, but he was also the campaign manager for the opposition People's Democratic Party. Saraki dynasty" had been consistent in Kwara's politics for the last 50 years. It is believed that many in the state were fed up with alleged lack of development in the north-western state, leading to the formation of the "O To Ge" movement

Godswill Akpabio
A king maker in Akwa-Ibom state, 8 years governor lost in spectacular fashion to Chris Ekpenyong {former deputy governor Victor Attah)

Abiola Ajimobi
1 time senator, 8 years governor.

Rabiu Kwakwanso
A current senator and two-time governor of the northern state of Kano, Rabiu Kwankwaso. All candidates he backed lost. Kwankwansiyyah movement is virtually in everyhouse hold in Kano state

George Akume
A 3 time senator, Two term governor of Benue state and a member of APC

Godfatherism and Inordinate ambitions of political office holders in Nigeria

We examined the inability of elected Political office holders in Nigeria to relinquish power after the expiration of their tenure leading to Godfatherism and frivolously seeking reelection to other political offices. Yomi and I had a look at the danger it poses for our democracy, and suggestions to stem this.

On the weekend roundup, Yomi commented on House of Reps accusation of Osinbajo of illegal approval of N5.8bn north-east intervention fund ad also Boko Haram attack in a Nigerian army base that left 100 of soldiers dead.

This is the recycling of our political office holders to vacate to continue in political offices as through the power of incumbency.
This issue is in 2 strands
There is a Godfather situation, where political candidates are favoured by certain political godfathers. We have seen different types/approach to godfatherism: there are self-styled godfathers who trade their political capital to put candidates in office and there are godfathers who grew into it based on the popularities, privileges and powers they enjoyed while in office themselves - in the latter we have had, the likes of Late Adedibu of Oyo state and the Bola Tinubu of Lagos state, Late Olusola Saraki in Kwara to mention a few.

In a bid to build their political hegemonies a, we have seen governors after the completion of their constitutional tenures 'retiring' to the national assembly by default. Since the Fourth Republic, governors, for example, have been known to retire in Senate after their terms. The current 8th Senate has 15 past governors as senators including the recently convicted Joshua Dariye of Plateau state.

At the moment, about 8 outgoing governors have made known their ambition to run for the senatorial seats in their constituencies.
