Possessing a beautiful voice, a natural sense of swing, and a deep connection to the Great American Songbook tradition, Lisanne brings timeless jazz storytelling into a contemporary setting. This debut project marks a major milestone in Shenel’s journey following years of celebrated work as a featured jazz vocalist, ensemble leader, and performer with Jazz at Lincoln Center. Produced by Grammy-winning artist Kamau Kenyatta, the new release showcases her powerful voice, emotional storytelling, and bold artistic identity.

This new album is an original world-inflected jazz fusion project created independently through his label, Gregory Golub Music Concept. His music stands at the crossroads of jazz, contemporary instrumental music, fusion, and genre-crossing composition, blending rich melodies, rhythmic exploration, and global influences into a deeply personal artistic statement.

Gregory began playing piano at the age of 12 and later received formal musical education in Russia and Ukraine. We take a deep dive into their fascinating new release The Zappa House Concert, a historic recording that captures a private 1996 performance by the Meridian Arts Ensemble at the Los Angeles home of legendary composer and musician Frank Zappa.

After several years arranging Zappa’s music for brass quintet and drums, the ensemble eventually had the chance to meet with Zappa in 1992. Although Zappa passed away in 1993, the ensemble later performed a special house concert in 1996 at the Zappa residence for invited guests, preserving a unique musical moment connected to his legacy.

The Meridian Arts Ensemble was founded in 1987 by students from Juilliard School and Manhattan School of Music and has since become one of the most innovative brass ensembles in contemporary music.

We caught up with Lionel in Australia to talk about his latest independent release Small Town, Vol. 2 — a deeply personal, genre-blending journey of jazz, soul and storytelling.

Lionel comes from one of America’s most iconic musical families. He is the son of jazz legend Freddy Cole, nephew of the legendary Nat King Cole, and cousin to Natalie Cole. Carrying that rich legacy forward, Lionel has built a remarkable career of his own across genres.

Beyond his solo artistry, Lionel is widely known for co-writing Through the Rain for Mariah Carey, and for arranging her Super Bowl performance of The Star-Spangled Banner with the Boston Pops. His collaborations include work with Joss Stone, John Legend, Van Hunt, Randy Jackson, and Rickie Lee Jones.

Currently performing in Sydney as the “Kilted Crooner” with his band Cole Soul and Emotion, Lionel continues to evolve while honoring one of music’s most legendary family traditions.

The idea to bring this project to Kulak’s came from acclaimed LA vocalist Mark Winkler, with guidance on the venue’s unique performance approach from Cathy Segal-Garcia. Dr. Gennari is a Professor of English and Critical Race and Ethnic Studies at the University of Vermont and an American Studies–trained U.S. cultural historian specializing in jazz and popular music, race and ethnicity, Italian American culture, food, sports, and cultural criticism. He is also the author of the 2017 book Flavor and Soul: Italian America at Its African American Edge.

In this conversation, we explore how a small New England town — Lenox, Massachusetts — became an unlikely home for jazz in the 1950s. The Jazz Barn chronicles the story of the Music Inn in the Berkshire Hills, where a barn, icehouse, and greenhouse were transformed into a groundbreaking cultural hub for performances, seminars, and cross-cultural exchange.

Since moving to Seattle in 2010, Kate has immersed herself in the local, regional, and international improvised music scenes. With a BA in Music (Jazz Emphasis) from the University of Wyoming and an MM in Improvisation from the University of Michigan, she now serves on the jazz faculty at Pacific Lutheran University and University of Puget Sound.
