Focus, Purpose & Leadership

This is Focus, Purpose & Leadership by Robert Bean.

I decided to create this podcast because in my 40 year career in the advertising, communications and brand strategy worlds, I've come to learn about the fundamental importance of clarity and purpose. Or in my terms, the value of having a 'single organising principle, a principle that a business would live or die by that is single minded and focused and helpful in consistent decision making.

In this series I'll be chatting to leaders who have put this into practice whilst developing their own successful businesses.

Every business wants an elevator pitch.

Sadly few have a truly compelling one.

One that’s as motivating internally as it is meaningful externally.
Businesses who own such a statement are better aligned, more focussed, more efficient and, ultimately, more profitable.

Having worked with BMW and ‘The Ultimate Driving Machine’, Honda and ‘The Power of Dreams’, BT and ‘It’s Good to Talk’, Homebase and ‘Make a House a Home’ and many others, it’s clear to see the focus these statements have provided their owners.

Robert is a strategic business consultancy that helps CEOs and Boards define and express their business’ most powerful proposition.

In a single sentence.

It’s called your ‘Single Organising Principle.’

Once articulated, we help bring it to life across the organisation’s culture, its products & services and reputation.

<itunes:summary>In this episode I talk to Kevin Reeves, an ex special forces soldier who’s served all over the world. Abandoned by his parents and hiding for a life of drugs and crime, he found the military and in particularly ‘Who Dares Wins’. He talks about this with passion and vigour and brings it to life as a real life single organising principle. Now settles back into civil life, he runs several international businesses in the food & personal care sectors. As I’m sure you’ll agree with me, he’s one of those characters who’s mad, bad, and a little dangerous to know.

<itunes:summary>In this episode I talk to Eric Partaker, Eric Partaker, Co-Founder and CEO of the Chilango Mexican restaurants chain. We met at their original site in Islington’s noisy and bustling Upper Street. In the episode, he talks about his passion for product quality and how even in the toughest times they refuse to compromise. If you’ve never tasted one of their burritos do yourself a favour, it’s not described as a stampede of flavours in your mouth for nothing.

Trust me, the business he runs is one of the most impressive businesses you’ve never heard of.

In this episode I talk to William Kendall: serial entrepreneur, investor and farmer. As Managing Director, William developed and ultimately sold New Covent Garden Soup Company and went on to discover, develop and sell Green & Black's chocolates. He’s now working on his farm and on his latest venture, the range of premium soft drinks Cawston Press. As you’ll hear, he’s a man of many parts and he’s previously told me he’s still not sure what he wants to do when he grows up.

We sat in armchairs, beers in hand, under a picture of his father at the home of dishoom, the appropriately named Babu House on Shoreditch High Street.

As you will hear, his passion for the subject remains undimmed despite years passing and technology now leading us to communicate in so many different ways.

Focus, Purpose & Leadership Trailer

This is Focus, Purpose & Leadership by Robert Bean.

I decided to create this podcast because in my 40 year career in the advertising, communications and brand strategy worlds, I've come to learn about the fundamental importance of clarity and purpose. Or in my terms, the value of having a 'single organising principle, a principle that a business would live or die by that is single minded and focused and helpful in consistent decision making.

In this series I'll be chatting to leaders who have put this into practice whilst developing their own successful businesses.

Make sure you subscribe to get the latest episode, which will be released every other Friday.
