This past Tuesday, democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani won the race for mayor of New York City, home to the largest number of Jews outside Israel. Mamdani is a 34-year old self-proclaimed Democratic Socialist and staunch anti-Zionist. His election has caused many Jewish New Yorkers to fear for the future of communal life in their city. Meanwhile, over recent months, we have witnessed a disturbing rise in unabashed antisemitism on the Right. Just last week, Tucker Carlson interviewed far-right influencer Nick Fuentes, who has been open about his support for both Hitler and Stalin. 

To discuss the precarious situation of diaspora Jews as they're squeezed between the far left and the far right, Dan was joined by Jonah Goldberg. Jonah is the editor in chief and co-founder of The Dispatch and author of multiple books on political history and conservative ideas, including Suicide of the West and Liberal Fascism. He’s also the host of the indispensable podcast, The Remnant.

On Friday, August 22, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) – a global hunger monitor – declared for the first time that famine had struck North Gaza. Israel quickly denied the charge, accusing the IPC of “biased and self-interested sources originating from Hamas.”

It’s hard to figure out the truth about the humanitarian situation in Gaza, but one thing is quite clear: the UN has worked to weaponize the famine narrative as part of its campaign against the Israel- and US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, which supplanted the UN’s role and influence in Gaza.

To discuss this disturbing part of the equation, we are joined by Rich Goldberg. Rich is a senior advisor at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies. He served in both Trump administrations, including on the White House National Security Council staff. He also spent a decade on Capitol Hill, where he oversaw all humanitarian aide programs.

On Sunday, Hamas announced that it agreed to a hostage-ceasefire proposal, which Israel officials are now reviewing. This comes after Sunday’s massive protests against the government’s plans to expand the war and conquer Gaza City. In preparation for the Gaza City operation, the IDF has called up another 60,000 reservists. 

On Tuesday, the Hostage and Missing Families Forum announced they are postponing another big protest originally scheduled for next Sunday in order not to disrupt the ongoing negotiations. 

On today's episode, we are joined by Miri Eisin to discuss Israel’s strategic position as it weighs whether to go for a deal or continue the war. Miri is a retired Col. in the IDF, who spent her career focused on military intelligence, and who served in the IDF alongside current IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir. She currently serves as a fellow at Reichman University’s International Institute for Counter-terrorism and is the Chair of the Taub Center for Social Policy Studies in Israel.

On Sunday, Hamas announced that it agreed to a hostage-ceasefire proposal, which Israel officials are now reviewing. This comes after Sunday’s massive protests against the government’s plans to expand the war and conquer Gaza City. In preparation for the Gaza City operation, the IDF has called up another 60,000 reservists. 

On Tuesday, the Hostage and Missing Families Forum announced they are postponing another big protest originally scheduled for next Sunday in order not to disrupt the ongoing negotiations. 

On today's episode, we are joined by Miri Eisin to discuss Israel’s strategic position as it weighs whether to go for a deal or continue the war. Miri is a retired Col. in the IDF, who spent her career focused on military intelligence, and who served in the IDF alongside current IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir. She currently serves as a fellow at Reichman University’s International Institute for Counter-terrorism and is the Chair of the Taub Center for Social Policy Studies in Israel. 

After our conversation with Miri, we were joined by Ark Media contributor Nadav Eyal for the “inside,” members-only portion of the episode. On Friday, August 15th, Israel marks the 20th anniversary of its 2005 disengagement from Gaza, a watershed moment in Israeli history. It’s the date when, 20 years ago, the IDF began executing the Knesset’s decision to unilaterally withdraw from all Jewish settlements in the Gaza strip, uprooting the 8,000 Israelis living there.

The plan was spearheaded by Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, who was head of the right-wing Likud party and had been a lifelong supporter of expanding settlements. Sharon ultimately got his government, including the future Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, to support the withdrawal.

In a two-part episode, we discuss the Gaza withdrawal and its implications with Ark Media contributor Amit Segal, who reported on the decision at the time, and Asi Shariv, who served as senior advisor to Prime Minister Sharon during those dramatic days. 

After the conversation with Asi, Amit continues with Dan for the “inside” portion of the episode. Dan pitches Amit listener questions about the future of Israeli leadership, the possibility of Palestinian statehood, and the extent of Qatari influence.
