LAFC's 2025 run comes to an end in the Western Conference Semis. Battling back from down 2-0, LAFC leveled things at the death with an incredible free-kick strike from Son Heung-min. Despite the Whitecaps going down to 10 men, and then 9, LAFC's chances either connected with the woodwork or went wide. The match would be lost in penalties, as both Sonny and Mark Delgado missed their chances and LAFC fell on kicks, 4-3. The Steve Cherundolo era is officially over.

It's LAFC with their third consecutive poor effort, this one a listless 1-1 regulation draw that turned into an 11-10 PK-shootout loss to lowly Mazatlan. The Black and Gold B-squad struck first, but Mazatlan's B-squad struck soon after. From there, the offense died, and the match went to kicks. 

It's OK, though, as all LAFC has to do next is beat the best team in CONCACAF, Pachuca, on Friday. Enjoy!

LAFC and Carson played for the 26th time on Saturday, and this one, for Black and Gold Faithful, may have been the most frustrating yet. Despite twice holding a 2-goal lead, LAFC had to settle for a point in a 3-3 draw as Galaxy scored at the death.

Denis Bouanga did all he could while he was on the pitch, scoring twice to move within 6 of Carlos Vela all-time. Gabriel Pec added a brace of his own, and a last-second header by Maya Yoshida forced both sides home with a point. A red card for Eddie Segura in stoppage certainly complicates matters for the home side in their next match against Portland.

It's Episode 363, and LAFC has just won the most important match in club history! LAFC slays LIGA MX giant Club America, 2-1, after 120'!

The atmosphere was unlike any other in the history of BMO Stadium, as Club America brought incredible support and a high-powered roster into Los Angeles for the winner-take-all showdown. After a tense, scoreless first half, Las Aquilas would get on the board first, with a little help from VAR. A soft penalty was awarded, which, of all people, Brian Rodriguez buries to put the visitors on top. 

Just before the 90', a perfect corner from Denis Bouanga finds the well-placed head of Igor Jesus, and we are level! What a time for Igor to score his first goal, and we are headed to Extra Time. In the second 15' half, Denis Bouanga pays off wonderful buildup from Olivier Giroud and Frankie Amaya, as his shot deflects off a defender's leg and in for the winner! LAFC is headed to the Club World Cup!

Montreal, the club that had scored just 8 goals all season, raced out to a 2-0 lead after 22', thanks to Prince Owusu's penalty and a couple of lucky bounces. LAFC would respond right before the half through Mark Delgado as the half would end 2-1.

The subs made all the difference for LAFC. Ryan Hollingshead improved the offense, Cengiz Ünder brought a calm on the ball, and Olivier Giroud delivered the tying goal, making the run and putting away a deflection. Not the story we wanted in Montreal, but LAFC's takes a point.

It was supposed to be a bit easier than it was, but LAFC battled back from 2-1 down late to steal a point at home against St. Louis. It's Episode 357, and if not for Saint Denis, LAFC would be in a world of trouble. 

Twice down in the match, LAFC needed a dime from Ünder to get Denis his first, and then a bomb from Lloris to put Denis in position for his brace. The rest of the attack? If not for solid set pieces and corners by Denis, there wouldn't be much to talk about. The load is heavy, but, for now, Denis remains up to the task.

LAFC and Portland play to a 3-3 draw in a match that was just as frenetic and unpredictable as the entire week was for LAFC. Amid the backdrop of 'Dolo's announcement, LAFC responds on the road for a point.

LAFC saw themselves down, 2-0, after just over 40'. Backs to the wall, LAFC stepped up for the first time in 2025, rallying to level the match twice to earn the point. Denis Bouanga was a man on fire, scoring the eventual leveler off a PK, having two called back for offside, and a couple of other great opportunities stifled by James Pantemis.

Here on Episode 355, two streaks come to an end as, hopefully, one starts. It's a solo Scarf endeavor here on Defenders of the Banc, as he breaks down LAFC's 2-1 victory over the Earthquakes. 

A scoreless but entertaining first half gave way to fireworks in the second, with LAFC getting on the board just past the hour mark. The rebound from Denis Bouanga's shot found the foot of Sergi Palencia, who teed one up perfectly from the top of the box to score his first goal in 2,888 days! That's even before Defenders of the Banc started! Yikes!

About 20 minutes later, Denis Bouanga would end a streak of his own, getting his first MLS regular season goal since last October, giving LAFC a 2-0 lead, and it's a good thing he did! Cristian Espinoza went ahead and did Cristian Espinoza things for SJ, scoring in stoppage to give SJ life, but LAFC saw out the final minutes without issue for the 2-1 win.

Also on this episode, we compliment Olivier Giroud's effort, several times, while hoping that all goes well with Maxime Chanot. It's a relatively quick one, and definitely a fun one here on Episode 355. Enjoy!

It's Episode 354, and it's a collapse of epic proportions, as LAFC goes to Miami, takes a 2-0 aggregate lead WITH the tiebreaker, only to squander it all away, losing 3-1 to Messi and Inter Miami and crashing out of the 2025 CCC. Ugh.

Things looked great for the Black and Gold early, as captain Aaron Long reported for duty, scoring a chaotic 9' goal to give the boys an early lead, and the tiebreaker. That's about where the good news ends. 

Miami scores three unanswered, including two from Lionel Messi. Denis Bouanga missed or squandered a series of great chances, including one in second-half stoppage, and that proved to be the undoing for LAFC in the CCC. SEVEN, yes, seven big chances missed for LAFC. Miami wins the match, 3-1, and wins the aggregate, 3-2, to advance to the semis.

LAFC headed down to San Diego for the first time, set to take on San Diego FC in Matchday 6 of the 2025 MLS season. A disaster start was only compounded by a fatal mistake after halftime, and the boys lost 3-2. 

Spotting a club a 3-0 lead is never something you want to do, but it's exactly what LAFC did in just 40' in San Diego. Anders Dreyer's passing, Christopher McVey's defense (and head), and a huge flub by Hugo Lloris saw the home side race out to the 3-goal lead. LAFC clawed two back before halftime, including a brilliant strike from Artem Smoliakov, but a second yellow to Igor Jesus killed the momentum.

LAFC headed back to the friendly confines of BMO Stadium to welcome our former captain, Ilie Sanchez, and his Austin FC teammates for an MLS regular season match. Ilie may have come back, but the goals went missing, as LAFC fell to the visitors, 1-0. 

Cengiz Ünder got his first start in an LAFC shirt, looking dynamic over his hour-plus on the pitch. But LAFC's Achilles heel continues to be the final ball, as they could muster just one shot on target after halftime despite owning the ball for more than 65% of the match. A soft-ish goal off an Austin corner turned out to be our undoing, and LAFC loses for the first time at home in MLS this season.

Episode 345 delves into LAFC's first win over NYCFC, 1-0, at BMO Stadium. The contest nearly ended in a scoreless draw, but Ryan Hollingshead's 86th-minute opportunistic strike put the home side on the right side of things. 

LAFC started in a different formation, 3-4-3, than they had lined up in this season. After a lackluster first 60', Steve pulled the plug and made the moves to get back into a 4-3-3, which really opened things up for the Black and Gold. Still, NYCFC's defense was up to the challenge. All it took, however, was one disastrous touch by defender Birk Risa, pounced on by Ryan Hollingshead, and the damage was done. LAFC wins 1-0.

It's Episode 342 and Lafferty's back for more as he and Scarf break down the 2-1 loss to Colorado on the road in the first leg of the First Round of the CCC. It's not all doom and gloom, however, as a late header by captain Aaron Long gave LAFC plenty of life as the boys thaw out and head back to BMO for two matches in four days!

Djordje Mihailovic was clearly the player of the match (and Scarf's Player To Watch on One More Sleep), as his brace helped the Rapids take a commanding 2-0 lead. But with just minutes until the final whistle, Denis Bouanga's cross found a flat-footed Long. His header kissed the inside of the post before finding the back of the net. 

The goal from long changes all the math (find out how on this episode!) as LAFC looks to advance out of the First Round of the CCC.

LAFC kicks off Season 8, The Ocho, in style, debuting our gleaming new road whites at... home... against Liga MX giant Club America during an international friendly. Filly and Scarf delve into all the details and more here on Episode 341!

It was a raucous and slightly Las Aguilas-partisan crowd at BMO as LAFC's public preseason came to a close on Tuesday. A rather drab first half gave way to an exciting second 45', as LAFC scored twice within the first 15 minutes. Denis Bouanga's non-stop pressure led to goal number one, and Olivier Giroud leaving the ball alone led to goal number two! La Monumental had something to cheer for just minutes later, as Igor Jesus's Carmelo Anthony impression allowed the lead to be cut in half, but LAFC saw out the remaining half hour and took the friendly, 2-1. Nathan Ordaz, Nkosi Tafari, and some excellent backline defending were the stars of the night.

It's Episode 338. Somewhat surprisingly and certainly prematurely, this will be the last episode that contains an LAFC game recap in 2024, as the Black and Gold fall to the Rave Green, 2-1, at BMO in the Western Conference Semifinals. 

It was a heartbreaking loss, especially because LAFC had played well enough to win and created enough chances to score. The soccer gods, however, are a fickle bunch, and, in this year's playoffs, aging goalkeepers seem to have curried their favor. Stefan Frei stood on his head, making three incredible saves on would-be sure goals, Maxime Chanot found the back of our net, and Jordan Morris found one late to eliminate LAFC. 

Yes, questions abound. And yes, we ask many of them here on 338. However, this isn't a full post-mortem, as that will come later in the offseason. This episode truly was a venting session, a stage in the grieving process. You want Dolo out? Pissed at JT and the FO? Do you feel the same way Scarf does about Olivier Giroud? All of that was fair game on this one, as this can be your safe space, too. Like we said, we will attempt to ask and answer many of the larger questions at a later date this year. 

Also on this episode, Filly talks like a parrot, Scarf answers the door, and we search for Carlos Vela. This isn't goodbye for 2024 yet, but it's at least goodbye for Episode 338!

In a nail-biter of a match, LAFC dispatches the Whitecaps from the MLS Cup Playoffs for the second year in a row, taking out the Canucks 1-0 on home ice at BMO Stadium. A bit of Matty Magic was all it took, with Aaron Long starting the party for him. 

LAFC moves on to face the Seattle Sounders in the Western Conference Semis after the totally normal international break in between playoff rounds. Enjoy 337!

It's Episode 336, and, yes, for the 11th time in two seasons, it's about Vancouver. This one, however, stung, as LAFC put up their worst performance on the road in quite some time in a 3-0 loss to Vancouver in the second match of the best-of-three First Round Playoff affair. 

In a goal eerily resembling the stoppage-timer from last match, Ryan Gauld got the home side off to a dream start just 10 minutes in. Three minutes later, the Ryan-to-Ryan connection was made for the first time this season, as Ryn Gauld found a streaking... Ryan Hollingshead... with a deft cross, and the home side was up 2-0. Though LAFC put up a solid effort for the first 20 minutes of the second half, the nail was provided by one of our own, as Eddie Segura put away another beautiful ball by Ryan Gauld to make it 3-0. Yikes. 

Also on this episode... not much else. Yes, we talk about the first IG post in LAFC history, and Mario expecting a baby boy, but at the end of the day... it's the Whitecaps. Again. But don't worry, the boys will be ready to do it one more time in 2024, as LAFC takes on Vancouver on Friday to settle the series, with the season on the line. Enjoy!

The King has returned! For the first time since 2023, Carlos Vela is back on the pitch for LAFC! For the 10th time in two years, LAFC takes on Vancouver. One of those things we love, the other not so much, but we talk about it all on Episode 335!

LAFC, as they have done for much of the last two seasons, dominated a lesser-talented Vancouver side over the course of 90+ minutes. A penalty goal by Denis after great combination play from Bogusz and Giroud set the tone for the first half, putting LAFC up 1-0. Just before the hour mark, excellent build-up and ball movement allowed Cristian Olivera to double the leads. LAFC looked to be cruising when, in the 86', Carlos Vela jogged over to the bench after warming up in front of the North End, signaling the return of El Rey!

Neither Mateusz Bogusz hitting the woodwork twice nor a late, stoppage-time goal for Vancouver could damper the mood at BMO. Our #10 was back, LAFC takes the first playoff match of 2024, and now... we play Vancouver again. Oy.

On Episode 334, Filly and Scarf recap an absolutely unbelievable Decision Day, both at BMO and in Houston! The subs save the day in LA while a former Carsonite sinks their ship at the death! It was a roller coaster of emotions for about 15 minutes, but LAFC comes out on top in the West as we get set to kick off the Western Conference Playoffs!

Things looked bleak for the first 45' for LAFC, as an early goal by Jackson Yueill, off an ill-advised pass from Eddie Segura, gave the road side a lead and meant that LAFC would need at least three on the day. Another offside goal from Giroud and an anemic first half attack (0 shots on target) sent the club into the halftime break down a goal. But in Houston, an Ezequiel Ponce goal just before the halftime whistle saw the home side take the lead, and left everything to play for at BMO!

LAFC opened the second half a little better, but it was just after the hour mark that LAFC truly woke up. A Denis Bouanga banger off a great Tillman cross leveled things at home, and the reinforcements came on soon after. Kei Kamara, Eduard Atuesta, and, later, Marlon, would all factor in the win. 

Atuesta's first few touches were magic, as he took a great 1-2 ball from Kei and rocketed it home past Daniel to give LAFC the 2-1 lead! With Aaron Long cramping in the 80', the Carlos Vela homecoming was put on hold, as LAFC used their 5th sub to bring on Marlon for Long. Serendipity doesn't always announce itself right away, but it would take Marlon just 10 minutes to become an LAFC hero! 

Off a great Atuesta free kick, Marlon, running in the same channel as Chanot, got his head to the cross and flicked it past Daniel and into the back of the net to give LAFC the 2-goal advantage it needed to move into 1st in the West! With our result secure, everyone turned to their phones, and turned into Dynamo fans! 

Alas, hopes were dashed in the 6th minute of stoppage time, as a Puig penalty call turned into a Pec rocket, and the score was leveled at 1. With the top spot seemingly gone, LAFC had to hope for a miracle, and we got one in the form of Burbank's own Daniel Steres! An 11th-minute stoppage-time header gave Houston an improbable 2-1 win, and handed LAFC the top spot in the West. It was an unreal scene at BMO!

Also on this episode, we remember jewelry made from a plane and wish our LAFC2 boys well in their first playoff match. What a night at BMO! Now, as Ilie said, "the best is yet to come!"

We made it to Decision Day and to the final regular season episode of One More Sleep. Filly and Scarf preview LAFC's final home game of the season against the Earthquakes.

It's Episode 333, the number of the beast as far as Vancouver is concerned. LAFC travels up to the PNW and steals 3 points from a much-deserving Whitecaps side! Matty gets an early one, Ilie seals it late, and the boys still have Western Conference crown hopes as we meet Decision Day head-on. 

It took all of 32 seconds for LAFC to get on the board, the second-fastest goal in club history. David Martinez supplies a perfect pass to a streaking Mateusz Bogusz, whose deft chip eludes both defender and keeper and puts the good guys up 1. After the break, a Sergi Palencia yellow and a Sergi Palencia own goal in short succession put the West in peril, and Vancouver had plenty of other bites at the cherry. 

Timothy Tillman makes the save of the match, denying Damir Kreilach on the line, and LAFC headed to stoppage needed a miracle. Enter Ilie Sanchez, with some massive help from The Wunderkid, Nathan Ordaz! Nate splits 2 defenders with a sick move, finds Kei Kamara, who quickly slots it to a wide-open Ilie. Just like Aaron Long last match, the unlikely hero Ilie plays the role of savior, and LAFC is up 2-1. Thank goodness the soccer gods blinked for a second, as Brian White's header at the death struck all post and no netting, and it's LAFC with everything to play for on Decision Day.

Also on this episode, Scarf does all the math and permutations for Decision Day, Filly enjoys Dodger Stadium for Game 2, and the boys wish both a former and current player happy birthday! Enjoy 333!

Looking to continue the end of season success, LAFC heads to "Blue Hell" to take on Sporting KC. The Black and Gold would score early, threaten often, and keep another sheet clean, still in the hunt for the Western Conference crown. It's all here on Episode 332!

Denis Bouanga earned his 11th shot a goal from the penalty spot early in the match. This one, however, would be his first saved attempt, as Tim Melia stayed put enough to both save Denis' penalty and watch the rebound whiz past him into the back of the goal, courtesy of David Martinez! In stoppage, Kike Olivera got on the end of a beautiful pass from Bouanga to double the lead heading into the half. 

After halftime, LAFC kept the pedal down, and the effort would pay off in the form of a beautiful, top bins goal by... Aaron Long? Yes! Aaron Long, in his 73rd appearance for LAFC, would finally get on the score sheet! The lesson learned? Don't leave Aaron long open! Hugo would do everything needed to keep the clean sheet, saving 4 shots but facing little danger, en route to his LAFC-record 11th shutout of the season.

Here on Episode 331, a quick one, we recap a fairly boring three points earned at home at the expense of St. Louis City SC. Denis scored, Hugo keeps it clean, and we head to Kansas City!

LAFC had several opportunities throughout the first half, failing to capitalize on quality chance after quality chance. No matter, as Denis Bouanga went 1v3 and found enough space to slot one past backup keeper Ben Lundt. 

The second half was almost as equally frustrating offensively, but the defense sparkled. Zero shots on target allowed, Hugo's 11th clean sheet of the season, and 3 mich needed points in the Western Conference race.

Episode 330 is upon us, and it's a fruitful road trip to Cincinnati! Three points, roster rotation, and another goal for Denis are all we wanted, and LAFC delivered!

LAFC came out inspired, dominating much of the first half hour or so. The only downside would come about a half hour in, as Sergi Palencia would pick up a yellow, meaning he will have to miss our next match, home against STL. Great combination play, from Omar to Lewis to Kei to Lewis and finally to David Martinez, resulted in a magnificent goal from the teenager, and a 1-0 lead for LAFC.

Cincy would answer at about the hour mark, as another patented laser beam from Luca Orellano knotted the contest. Halftime sub Denis Bouanga would provide the winner, and, somewhat unsurprisingly, it would come off another keeper assist from Hugo and the first assist in Black and Gold for Olivier Giroud. LAFC would hold tight and see out the result, moving back to second in the West. 

Also on this episode, Scarf handles the Great Spider Attack of 2024 quite well, at least on camera, while Filly adds to his prop game with a Mertopolitan! The boys remember both Charlie Hustle and Dikembe while celebrating a 38-year old and much more! Enjoy 330!

The US Open Cup hangover might still be lingering but that doesnt mean the season is over. That also means that OMS sleep is back. The boys return to preview LAFC first match in Cincy since 2022.

LAFC are the 2024 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup Champions! It's a back-in-time episode, as the boys go nocturnal for the first time in quite a while, and for good reason! LAFC lifts a trophy for just the second time in club history after a 3-1 victory over a very game Sporting Kansas City side. At least a few of the demons have been exercised. 

The first half felt very much like a final: tense, scrappy, and neither side wanting to make the first major move. The best chance of the half came from Olivier Giroud, but both clubs would stay off the scoresheet.

Just 8 minutes into the second half, LAFC would strike first! It wouldn't be a bold strike or a soaring header, but a tap-in from Olivier Giroud counts just the same, and the boys have a 1-0 lead. A lead that would last all of several minutes, as Erik Thommy slots home an easy ball after a turnover from Timmy Tillman in our own half to level it at 1. 

We would play a full 90 deadlocked, which means bonus soccer in the forms of two 15-minute "halves", then PK's if necessary. It would not be necessary. LAFC found a goal in each half of extra time, first off the right foot of Omar Campos and then off the head of the ageless wonder, Kei Kamara. LAFC take home the trophy amid the 3-1 victory!

So much for tuning up and getting in form for the 2024 U.S. Open Cup Final. LAFC drops their road match to Dallas, 3-1, behind another lackluster performance amid roster rotation. LAFC may not have won a match in their last 5, but a chance to win a trophy comes to BMO on Wednesday, in the form of SKC. Let's chat about it on Episode 328.

An awful turnover right to the feet of Dallas' best goal scorer, Petar Musa, sees the home side take a 1-0 lead into the half. LAFC looked to stem the tide at the hour mark, subbing on Bouanga and Giroud, but in the next few minutes that followed, all hell broke loose for the Black and Gold. Two goals in two minutes from Dallas saw the lead balloon to 3, and if not for an Atuesta goal late, LAFC would be shut out by Texas for a third straight match.

LAFC turns its focus to the Open Cup Final on Wednesday, and everyone looked to come out of this one injury-free. It should be an interesting atmosphere at BMO for the mid-week matchup. Also on this episode, Filly is in a fighting mood as Scarf recalls the club's history with Hello Kitty. Enjoy 328!

Filly and Scarf are back for Episode 327, as LAFC's winless streak hits 4 with a home draw against Austin. Back at BMO, LAFC misses an opportunity to clinch a playoff spot but definitely doesn't miss a chance to welcome back Carlos Vela!

LAFC played an excellent first half defensively... right up until it didn't. One mistake by Aaron Long, one pass by Bukari, and one shot on target was all Austin needed to take a lead into the locker room. 

An hour in, LAFC brings on Ilie and the teenager, David Martinez, and it pays dividends. Giroud, Atuesta, and Hollingshead combine for a great buildup, finding a streaking Martinez in the box to make it 1-1. Hugo did what he needed to to preserve a point, but LAFC couldn't find the winner and the match ended in a draw.

On Episode 326, we discuss how Carson absolutely destroyed LAFC in a 4-goal second half as LAFC blew a 2-0 lead. That's the lead. That's the headline. That's the story. 

LAFC raced out to a two-goal lead behind two spectacular runs by Denis Bouanga. The first resulted in a moment of Matty Magic, and the second a goal for Denis. Carson had plenty of chances in the first half, but several saves by Hugo kept a clean sheet. 

Cue the second half and the Galaxy rout. A brace for Dejan, a banger from Cerillo, and a nail in the coffin from, of all people, Puig completed the comeback and all-but-wrapped up the West for Carson. Oh, and Lewis O'Brien saw red and will miss our match against Austin.

Who could provide you with a little bit of light-hearted entertainment after LAFC's 0-0 draw in Houston? Filly and Scarf, that's who! Join the boys on Episode 325, discussing much more than the scoreless 90 minutes in Texas.

Hugo Lloris keeps another clean sheet, his 10th of the season, without too many difficult moments. Ryan Hollingshead should have had a record-scoring goal, but Olivier Giroud was just offside. Griffin Dorsey, Filly's IU mate, was excellent, as was Sergi Palencia for LAFC, and, in limited minutes, Nathan Ordaz put in an excellent shift. There you have it, the anatomy of a 0-0 draw.

Episode 324 is (finally) here. LAFC got back to their MLS schedule but left their offense somewhere along the way as the Houston Dynamo came into BMO and knocked off our boys, 2-0.  

LAFC got off to a slow start, made even worse by Ezequiel Ponce's header to give the visiting side a 1-0 lead into the half. Steve would switch to a 4-3-3 in the second half, but it would do little to stem the tide. Lawrence Ennali did his best Sonic the Hedgehog impersonation as he flew by Ryan Hollingshead and Eddie Segura, made one touch to round Hugo Lloris, and softly tapped in his first MLS goal to double the lead. That would be all Houston would need, and, unfortunately, all Ennali would contribute, as he tore his ACL later in the match.

It's Episode 323 (shout out to everyone in the 323!), and Filly is SPICY! Hold on to your hats, folks, as Filly sounds off on a great many things. Oh, and we also talk about LAFC's historic win at Tukwila!

LAFC and Seattle somehow found their way over the river and through the woods to Starfire Sports Complex for the U.S. Open Cup Semifinal showdown on turf! LAFC would produce one quality chance in the first half, off the foot of Kei Kamara, but 6'6" Jackson Ragen, not goalkeeper Andrew Thomas, would keep us scoreless into halftime. 

LAFC would continue to thwart Seattle while looking for daylight of their own. Substitute Mateusz Bogusz's shot would find the arm of Pedro de la Vega, which would set up Denis Bouanga on the penalty spot. The man doesn't miss, and, after a little luck and good defending kept Jordan Morris from equalizing, LAFC would take their place in the U.S. Open Cup Final, to be held at BMO in September against Sporting Kansas City!

Also on this episode, pretty much everyone catches strays from Filly. Everyone from Carlos Vela to all of Seattle to those on social media doing anything less than backing LAFC to the fullest! He was ON FIRE.

On Episode 322, Filly and the Scarf break down another heart-wrenching defeat in Columbus. This time, it's a 3-1 loss in the Final of the 2024 Leagues Cup. Come with us on what we hope will be a chance to get it all out while we look forward to the Open Cup Semifinal the boys play in just a few days. 

An awful first half turned worse in stoppage, as LAFC just couldn't get in the locker room even. A beautiful header by Cucho put the home side up at the half. The second half was much, much better for LAFC, however. Olivier Giroud got on the end of a great Bogusz set piece for his first goal in Black and Gold, and LAFC would hold the deadlock until second-half stoppage. A dangerous cross turned into a heartbreaking goal, again from Cucho, and our Leagues Cup run was over. The Crew put one more away to make it even worse cosmetically. 

At least LAFC secured our spot in CCC, right? And hey, for now, we've still got Kike and Bogusz! Let's all be in our feels as we get set for a trip up to Seattle, and for the chance to play for another Cup!

Episode 321, and FINALLY, Filly is back from gallivanting across Europe! It's so nice to have him back and to hear someone else's voice on the pod. And, oh-by-the-way, LAFC HAS QUALIFIED FOR THE CONCACAF CHAMPIONS CUP! Let's talk about it!

With a chance at the Leagues Cup Final, and the aforementioned CCC spot, on the line, LAFC announced their presence with authority and left no doubt. Four goals, two on each side of halftime, and the incredible, Liga MX-beating run by Colorado was a thing of the past. You'd expect the first three goal scorers, for sure, with Denis Bouanga, Mateusz Bogusz, and Kei Kamara all finding the back of the net. But the exclamation point, provided as Lewis O'Brien opened his LAFC account, was definitely a pleasant surprise.

Here on Episode 320, LAFC heads up to Seattle to do exactly what we did three-plus weeks ago, beat the Sounders, 3-0. This time, a berth in the semis of the 2024 Leagues Cup is on the line. 

LAFC would start out hot, as Ryan Hollingshead got behind the defense and slotted home a 13' goal to get the Black and Gold rolling. A dozen minutes later, Kei Kamara turned back the hands of time yet again, this time with a beautiful right-footed, leaping volley that sent the bouncing shot over the outstretched arms of Stefan Frei and into the back of the net for a two-goal lead.

Just 8 minutes after the halftime whistle, Denis Bouanga, who had missed a similar opportunity earlier in the match, got the long pass from his good buddy Hugo Lloris, and the lead was three. Hugo went nearly 14 years between career assists one and two, but barely 14 days between two and three!

Also on this episode, Lewis O'Brien makes his debut, FC Cincinnati may be to blame for Kike Olivera not playing, and Filly is still in Europe. Enjoy Episode 320!

It's Episode 318, and the 2024 edition of the Leagues Cup rolls through BMO. LAFC cuts off the broccoli at the stalk, taking out Austin 2-0 en route to a Round of 16 date with the Smurfs!

Denis Bouanga caught Austin's back line napping with his 11th-minute goal off a superb long ball from Hugo Lloris, his first assist since 2010. After a couple of great saves by Lloris, second-half sub Kike Olivera put it in the refrigerator with a deflected strike that bounded up and over Stuver for the nail in the coffin.  

Hugo would record a clean sheet, Murillo would forget he wasn't a forward, and all 12,000 were whipped into a frenzy as Olivier Giroud was shown on the Jumbotron at BMO. LAFC survives and advances in the 2024 Leagues Cup! Enjoy 318!

LAFC gets set to host Austin FC in the 2024 Leagues Cup Round of 32! Will we see Giroud make his LAFC debut?

Here on Episode 317, we are back in action at BMO, and it's more Leagues Cup action. This time, we take on a very, very familiar foe as of late, the Vancouver Whitecaps. And boy oh boy was it a roller coaster ride!

LAFC simply looked awful to start the match. Down 2-0 after 20 minutes, and playing rather uninspired football, the supporters at BMO were looking for any signs of life on the pitch; the 3252 was providing all the necessary energy off of it. 

Cue the dramatics! LAFC would make something out of nothing, and wait until the 87th minute to do so. Denis Bouanga would find the beautiful head of Kei Kamara, and just like that, LAFC was back in it, down 2-1. With just seconds left on the clock, Sergi Palencia's cross would find David Martinez, who taes his shot from well outside the top of the box. The bouncing ball finds the head of Mateusz Bogusz, and, completely improbably, we are level!

LAFC would go on to lose in penalties, but the point we earned was enough to get us into the Round of 32! Yay us! Enjoy Episode 317!

On Episode 316, we pose the following question: Can LAFC win 3-0 AND underwhelm offensively? Xolos provides little resistance in our Leagues Cup opener as Denis Bouanga continues to put up video game numbers. 

Goals in both the first 10 minutes and the last few minutes of the half helped LAFC put a stranglehold on the match early, and Kike Olivera's goal just after halftime sealed the deal. LAFC takes all three points and gets set to take on Vancouver on Tuesday.

Episode 315, and what an effort by our boys! LAFC heads into the belly of the beast, Lumen Field in Seattle, and promptly stomps the Sounders, 3-0, behind a Bouanga brace and a Bogusz banger!

LAFC raced out to an early 1-0 lead as Sounders defender Nouhou was whistled for a handball in the box. Denis does his thing, burying the PK, and LAFC was off to a flying start. Another patented laser show from Mateusz Bogusz, one-timing a volley from outside the box, gave LAFC a two-goal lead before halftime. 

The Sounders came out roaring in the second half, dominating possession, looking dangerous, and seemingly building towards a goal. Nobody told that to Kei Kamara and Denis Bounaga, however, as a Kei long ball found Denis through the middle, on the break, for his second of the night. Completely against the run of play, LAFC was now up three. Denis could have made it four heading into stoppage, but his first touch betrayed him, and he remains one behind Chicho for the Golden Boot lead. In stoppage, massive saves from Hugo (twice!) and Sergi Palencia keep the sheet clean and bring all three points home from Seattle!

Episode 314 is here, but it's another sluggish performance for LAFC. A player returns, a player gets hurt, and opportunities are missed at home in our clash with RSL. 

Things started out great at BMO, with Steven Beitashour leading the falcon flight as Kike Olivera was gifted an early goal from Zac MacMath. But just minutes later, Timothy Tillman goes down with a hamstring injury, and the Black and Gold did not look the same. 

A fluke goal off a set piece leveled things for RSL before halftime, and that was all the scoring for the night. Both sides missed a few opportunities, none more inviting than Mateusz Bogusz's in the 79', and the points were split. LAFC gets set to take on Seattle at Lumen in just a few days, and then it's on to Leagues Cup!

It's Episode 313, and it was an absolute beatdown. The defending champs, Columbus Crew, came into BMO and delivered haymaker after haymaker, destroying LAFC, 5-1, delivering the worst home loss in our club's history. 

Only down 1-0 at halftime, the dam broke in the final 45'. In addition to giving up four second-half goals, LAFC also saw their numbers reduced to 9, with Sergi Palencia and Jesus Murillo both shown red. Without them, our upcoming match against RSL is that much tougher. 

There were a few small, faint linings of silver, with Nathan Ordaz scoring his first MLS goal and Eddie Segura making his 100th regular season appearance for the Black and Gold, but make no mistake about it, this was a total team meltdown. 

No time to nurse wounds, as LAFC has a match in just four days time, with Chicho Arango heading back to BMO. It'll be time for 314 soon enough!

On Episode 312, we keep it short and sweet. LAFC does what they need to do to get past USL side New Mexico United and onto the semifinals of the U.S. Open Cup. 

Goals by Timmy Tillman, David Martinez, and Mateusz Bogusz highlight a performance Coach Steve said was "enough to get them over the bar." The real highlight was the solid turnout by the NMU supporters. Kudos!

Episode 311 is all about the rivalry, the derby, the Battle for Los Angeles! And on this episode, everything comes up roses for LAFC! LAFC takes out their rivals from Carson, 2-1, behind a standout performance from Sergi Palencia and another historic goal from Kei Kamara. 

The first half was all LAFC, as the Black and Gold went into the locker room with a 2-0 lead. A picture perfect corner from Mateusz Bogusz to Kei Kamara gave LAFC the lead. Just a minute or so later, Eduard Atuesta earns a penalty, and Denis Bouanga puts it away for a two goal advantage!

In the second half, LAFC would absorb Carson's best, as Gabriel Pec and company stormed to the front of the net for an early second half goal. Crises were averted after that, as both Joseph Paintsil and Riqui Puig saw their efforts go for naught. LAFC would take the match and even up the series at nine wins apiece.

Another night at BMO, another bit of history made by LAFC in what has rounded into an extremely successful first half-ish of the season for the Black and Gold. The home unbeaten streak continues, and you can hear all about it here on Episode 310!

It was a bit of a sluggish first half for LAFC, but we were able to get on the board in the 20' behind the connection that has powered the offense to the top of the West, Denis Bouanga and Mateusz Bogusz. After a beautiful buildup including an exquisite through ball from Ilie, Denis picks out Matty on the far post. Both the ball and Bogusz tumble into the goal for the lead, 1-0. 

Before the hour mark, LAFC double their lead behind another Bogusz banger, this one coming off a deflected Denis attempt. Zack Steffen was caught flat-footed, and LAFC was up two. Just a few minutes later, Kevin Cabral would be shown his second yellow for the Rapids, making any comeback all the more unlikely. 

A third from Bogusz, off the best buildup of the night, quieted the waters in Colorado, put the boys up 3-0, and cemented an historic night for Matty, becoming just the 6th player in club history with a hat trick. Hugo kept it clean for his 8th of the season.

LAFC welcomes FC Dallas to BMO for the first time in 2024! Unfortunately for Dallas, their trip comes during LAFC's record-setting shutout streak, and, with a 2-week break looming after the match, the Black and Gold were dead set on keeping the streak going. Hear all about it here on Episode 306!

The two sides played to a scoreless first half, with LAFC failing to put away a couple of decent chances. Their MLS scoreless streak surpassed 400 minutes, and their all-comps streak ticked over 500 minutes, but the score was still knotted at zero.

With Dallas looking to park the bus, breaking the deadlock would take a moment of brilliance. Enter Mateusz Bogusz. LAFC's do-it-all midfielder/forward slotted a beautiful pass right down Broadway to a streaking Denis Bouanga, and 99 did all the work from there. The boys were up 1-0, and that would be enough. Though Dallas dominated the last eight minutes or so, they couldn't equalize. 

The winning streak is now at 7 as LAFC heads into a 2-week break. Time to rest and recharge before a 2-match road trip through Orlando and Austin. Enjoy 306!

Episode 305 is on tap, and things are getting Loon-y at BMO! LAFC extends their shutout streaks, Denis scores and assists, and Matty Bogusz puts on a laser show. Let's get to it!

One of the few teams ahead of LAFC in the standings, Minnesota United made the cross-country trek to BMO looking for the same result they experienced at home. The scoreline may have been the same, but that's where the similarities end. Denis buried a well-earned penalty in the first half, Mateusz Bogusz drilled top bins from 30 yards out in the second half, and the bend-but-don't-break defense extended their simultaneous shutout streaks to new LAFC records!

Atlanta. Oh, Atlanta. If LAFC had their own Simpsons’ Tree House of Horrors, it would be Mercedes Benz Stadium. The Black and Gold traveled back to the ATL to take on Atlanta United, and, here on Episode 304, let Filly and the Scarf tell you why, for the first time, LAFC didn’t get the Benz in Atlanta!

After a chippy first half that saw plenty of yellows and a few missed foul calls, the action really heated up at the hour mark. Brad Guzan sweeps the leg on Mateusz Bogusz, earning an eerily similar red to the Portland match. It definitely WAS deja vu all over again, as Bogusz found more Mati magic, slotting the free kick by backup Josh Cohen to give the away side a 1-0 advantage. 

From there, as Taylor Twellman put it, LAFC got… worse. Way, way worse. Despite the man advantage, it was the now-Thiago Almada led home side that dictated pace. A couple of near misses and continuous pressure led to LAFC’s own red card, on (surprise) Eduard Atuesta for his second yellow of the match. Luckily, Atlanta couldn’t capitalize 10v10, and, for the first time, LAFC leaves ATL with all three points.

On Episode 303, the boys recap the dominant 3-0 win over USL Championship side Loudoun United in the 2024 U.S. Open Cup! 

LAFC raced out to an early lead, with Timothy Tillman's 8th-minute goal equalling the fastest goal LAFC has scored in the Open Cup. A sleepy remainder of the half would give way to a much more action-filled second, as Denis the Distributor found Kike Olivera for his 3rd goal of this year's Open Cup. With the lead doubled, LAFC kept their foot planted squarely on the accelerator. Denis found Tomas Angel, making his first start for LAFC, behind the defense with a beautiful, calm pass. From there, Angel did all the work and found the net to open his LAFC account. 3-0 and it was all over an hour in. 

LAFC moves on to face another USLC side, New Mexico United, in the Quarterfinals in early July. More on that match, and their opponent, as we get closer to the date. Also on this episode, Tommy Musto makes his LAFC debut and we remember the friendly against Borussia Dortmund.

After a lackluster first half where LAFC was certainly fortunate to be level, Coach Dolo pulls all the right strings yet again. Denis Bouanga receives a brilliant pass from Matty Bogusz before blasting a rocket past Roman Burki to take a 1-0 lead. After a red card for the home side, Denis waited until stoppage time to pounce on a Chris Durkin fumble and took it to the house for the goal, the brace, and three points, all in one! Just like that, LAFC have won an MLS match on the road!

300! We made it! 7+ years, hours and hours of content, and here we are, 300 episodes strong. Thank you to all of you out there who have supported us, listened to us, said nice or not-so-nice things about us, fueled us, and otherwise been there throughout any part of this journey. We can't wait to hit 400 with you soon!

LAFC took a trip to beautiful Cashman Field to take on the Las Vegas Lights in the 2024 U.S. Open Cup Round of 32. As we have been known to do this season, the boys in Black and Gold made it tougher than it needed to be, conceding another set-piece goal. Ultimately, however, some timely subs and a solid second-half effort saw LAFC pull one out, 3-1, behind a late brace from Kike Olivera and the first LAFC tally for Kei Kamara. Abraham Romero played well in his first start for LAFC. 

Aside from their suddenly-congested MLS schedule, LAFC must now ready themselves for another USL-foe, Loudon United, as the Open Cup moves to BMO on May 21. 

Between now and then, we will have MLS matches against both Vancouver and St. Louis, so stay tuned for lots of Filly and Scarf here on Defenders!

LAFC had an opportunity, at least for a minute, to share the top spot in the West if they could deliver a performance on the road against the worst team in the West. To put it very simply, we could not. This is Episode 299, and it's not pretty. 

San Jose jumped out early, scoring on a corner kick just 5 minutes in.  The Black and Gold had a few opportunities in the opening half, but either poor execution in the final third or a solid save by William Yarbrough kept us off the board. 

To start the second half, San Jose subbed on their expensive new addition, Hernan Lopez, and things did NOT get better for LAFC. A Pair of beautiful balls (giggity?) by Cristian Espinoza put the nails in our Santa Clara coffin. A Kike Olivera moment of brilliance gave LAFC a lifeline, but the same story that doomed us in the first half was the story yet again: Yarbrough and poor execution. LAFC fails yet another road test and questions now abound about our set-piece defense. 13 goals in 5 road games just won't get it done. 

Also on this episode, BMO Stadium gets it own Noah's Arcade while the boys get a new addition up top and say goodbye to a member of the braintrust. The next one is a big one, as we hit the three century mark! We can't wait to put this one behind us and to get going on 300!

On this episode, we again praise the exploits of one Denis Bouanga, or Saint Denis, as he has come to be known around these parts. Just when we thought our old friend, Maxime Crepeau, did enough standing on his head to deliver his new club, the Portland Timbers, a point on the road, St. Denis delivered a stoppage-time miracle and three points to the Black and Gold. Welcome to Episode 298, the one where Diego Chara sets records and sees red. 

LAFC played perhaps their best half of the season to start the match against Portland, racing out to a 2-0 lead behind a goal from Timmy Tillman in first-half stoppage and a Portland own goal.  But soccer matches are two halves long, and LAFC couldn't have come out more flat. Cabecita cut the deficit in half before Santi Moreno leveled with less than 20 minutes remaining. But consecutive yellows from Diego Chara just 4 minutes apart saw the home side go up a man, and it was time for a stunner. 

In the second minute of stoppage, after another great Crepeau save, Denis rounded the corner of the left side of the box, got everything behind his boot, and fired past Crepeau for the 3-2 stoppage time.

"Keep Portland Weird" is the slogan you'll see plastered on many walls, billboards, and bumper stickers as you make your way across the Rose City. Well, LAFC and Portland did their best to keep Portland weird in their 2-2 draw on Saturday, and you can hear all about it here on Episode 296. 

With Filly still in New York, our good buddy Chris Lafferty joined Scarf to break down the match in Portland. The first half belonged to Evander, as The Real Deal gave Portland the lead on a pass to Felipe Mora for their first goal, and then re-took the lead for his club with a beautiful moment of brilliance right before halftime. If not for a great through ball by Timmy Tillman to Mateusz Bogusz, LAFC would have entered the half down 2-0. 

Everything went upside down for the hosts just minutes into the second half. Maxime Crepeau was shown a straight red after tackling Denis Bouanga just outside the box, and the ensuing free kick was rocketed home by Bogusz for his brace. Down a man, it was Portland who maintained the majority of solid chances in the second half, with LAFC able to muster a few quality chances during stoppage time, but no goals. 8 yellows, one red, and over 30 fouls later, both sides walk away with a point in the 2-2 draw.

Our expectations after last week's win were sky high, but the Rapids brought us back down to earth with a frustrating 3-2 defeat in Commerce City, CO. With Scarf miles away in Puerto Rico, Filly enlists the help of friend of the pod, and member of the @blackandgoldrc , Chris Lafferty ( @lafclaff ) to cover the news from this past week and recap everything from today's match. Welcome to Episode 293, and what a match it was for the boys in Black and Gold! LAFC ends our scoreless streak just before it hit 350 minutes, Denis Bouanga bags a brace (though he will tell you it should have been 4!), and Olly takes a circuitous route around BMO for her pre-match flight. Take a listen for all the details of a thrilling night at BMO. 

LAFC got on the board early, off a beautiful corner kick by Eduard Atuesta. The ball nicked Aaron Long's head before Nashville's defender deflected it right to the foot of a waiting Timothy Tillman, and just like that, the drought was over for LAFC! Denis Bouanga would join the party moments later, off a Tillman-drawn penalty kick, and the Golden Boot winner of 2023 got his first of 2024. 

After the half, more fireworks, as LAFC put up two more in regulation. Right after the halftime whistle, a cross by Palencia is dummied perfectly by Atuesta, and it's Denis waiting to slam it home.  A straight red for keeper Joe Willis would see Nashville down a man for the last half hour, and LAFC would take full advantage. Atuesta and David Martinez would combine for a few beautiful touches to find Kike Olivera, who slides it past backup keeper Elliot Panicco for the fourth of the match for LAFC!

In stoppage time, Bouanga would slot a perfect ball onto the head of a diving Eduard Atuesta for his first goal for LAFC since 2021, and the party was on! 5-0 LAFC, a clean sheet for a largely untested Hugo Lloris, and, most importantly, Olly was back on the arm of Jason Miknuk after halftime. What a night!

LAFC traveled to the Twin Cities to take on Minnesota United and, stop us if you've heard this before, LAFC was held goalless. Again. In fact, it's been 339 minutes of actual live play since out last goal. Cue the Titanic meme, indeed. 

A mess of a clearance by Murillo off a set piece given under questionable-at-best circumstances fell to the feet of Robin Lod, who, even with his off-foot, doesn't miss from that close, put the Loons up a goal just after the 15' mark. Flash forward to the 88', and a horror show of a back pass from LAFC finds Bongi Hlongwane, which set him 1v1 with Hugo. Kudos to Lloris for even getting a touch on it, but it wasn't enough to keep Minnesota from doubling the lead. 

In between, and bookending the goals, for that matter, LAFC could barely muster an offensive whimper. Two shots-on-target and 5 offsides aren't going to cut it. LAFC has to find some answers with Nashville set to enter the fray at BMO next Saturday.

LAFC heads back to the friendly confines of BMO Stadium for a matchup against Peter Vermes-led Sporting Kansas City, the only club to beat LAFC twice at home in the regular season in our club's first 6 years. What we hoped would be a high-scoring match for the Black and GOld quickly turned into a battle of keepers. 

Former MLS Pool keeper and longtime SKC player Tim Melia was outstanding, making huge save after huge save over the course of 90 minutes to keep LAFC off the board. Our best chance likely came in the 84th minute, as David Martinez shook his man, raced up the left side, and... fired his shot high and deep into the 3252 instead of passing it to Denis Bouanga for an absolute sitter and potential game-winning goal. Ugh. Sporting had their opportunities, but nothing really troubling for Hugo Lloris, as he is able to make all 6 necessary stops en route to his first clean sheet.

It's no Lazy Sunday for the Defenders, as they wake up early Sunday morning to give you all the LAFC news, notes, banter, and a recap of the blizzard that hit Sandy, Utah by the name of Andres Gomez. LAFC gets TKO'd by Salt Lake, 3-0, amid a blustery, winter storm. 

First, the match was delayed 2 hours because of weather. Then, just 3 minutes in, lightning halted the festivities for nearly another hour. But upon restart, the match was essentially over at the half, as Andres Gomez's brace, Chicho's goal and snow angel, and Zac MacMath's MacMastery in net did in LAFC. 

A solid second half by LAFC wasn't enough, but there were bright spots. Kike Olivera looked good throughout, another post by Denis Bouanga, and the LAFC debuts of both David Martinez and Tomas Angel helped to soften the sting of this defeat. 

The orange ball is a harbinger of doom, but we hope this episode of Defenders of the Banc gives you a little comfort after the awful loss! Enjoy Episode 290!

Season 7 is upon us, and our first match of the new year sees us staring down a familiar foe, the Seattle Sounders. Hugo Lloris is Black and Gold, Eduard Atuesta is BACK in Black and Gold, and Carlos Vela still isn't in Black and Gold. But one thing remains the same: LAFC does NOT lose season openers!

The match began with another banger of a tifo by The 3252, proceeded by Giorgio Chiellini himself as the match's Honorary Falconer. Jordan Morris wasted no time in welcoming Hugo to MLS, as Lloris needed to make a huge save just minutes into the match. For most of the next hour, LAFC was on the front foot, and goals from Timothy (Himothy?) Tillman and Mati Bogusz on either side of the halftime whistle saw the home side off to a 2-0 lead. 

Things got interesting after a Seattle penalty kick saw the away side pull within one, but the Sounders never really mustered much more of a threat. LAFC wins the season opener, 2-1!

The boys are back! Both LAFC and the Defenders have finally begun things in 2024. 

On our maiden 2024 voyage, the boys talk three things: Preseason matches, players we've signed, and players who have left. Yes, Maxime Crepeau is gone. So is John McCarthy, Kellyn Acosta, Diego Palacios, Giorgio Chiellini, and many other depth pieces. 

But, oh baby! Eduard Atuesta is back from Palmeiras, David Martinez and Tomas Angel join the attack, and Omar Campos will be playing the role of Chiqui in 2024! And oh by the way, Hugo Lloris will be between the pipes. Yes, the same keeper who won World Cup in 2018 and almost did it again in 2022.

Ultimately, 2023 did not end with the same Hollywood ending as 2022 did. There was no Gareth Bale miraculous goal, no comeback just in the nick of time, and no major championship trophy hoisted by LAFC this season. Despite chance after chance, the boys in Black and Gold fell just short yet again, losing to the Crew in the MLS Cup Final, 2-1. 

Here on Episode 287, re-live all the agony and the glimmers of hope from that final, 53rd match of the season. Our boys gave it their all, but, despite another Denis Bouanga goal, it wasn't enough.

It's Episode 286, and on this episode, LAFC finally brings home a trophy! It's not quite the one we were hoping for, but don't worry! We play for that in just 7 days! LAFC is on to the MLS Cup Final after defeating Houston in the Western Conference Final, 2-0!

A near miss by Carlos Vela and a stunning cross from Hector Herrera punctuated a very entertaining first 10 minutes or so, but then LAFC's defense went to work, stifling Houston for the remainder of the first half. Just before the halftime whistle, a perfect Carlos Vela corner finds the head of Giorgio Chiellini. His initial effort was saved, but playoff goal scorer turned hero Ryan Hollingshead was there to put it away to give LAFC the lead just before halftime. 

In the second half, Houston certainly had a lot of the ball, but nothing to show for it. LAFC's defense put up yet another goose egg, but not without the help of Ilie Sanchez taking a ball off our own goal line. A late own goal provided the margin as LAFC clinch a berth in the MLS Cup Final!

It's on to Columbus!

The deck was stacked with reasons why LAFC shouldn't win. Why LAFC shouldn't advance to their third Western Conference Final in our 6-year history. Why the Black and Gold faithful would be rueing another missed opportunity. 

Well, somewhere along the way, nobody in Black and Gold got the memo as LAFC wins an absolute nail-biter, 1-0, on the road at Lumen Field, over the hated Sounders! LAFC will host the Western Final at BMO on Saturday, December 2nd!

Denis Bouanga did it yet again, scoring in the 30' for the match's only goal. From minute one through the end of the 8 minutes of second-half stoppage time, LAFC's defense, led by Maxime Crepeau between the pipes, Giorgio Chiellini at center back, and a huge play by Timothy Tillman, put on an absolute masterclass. What a match!

Also on this episode, former LAFC players make their mark on this year's MLS Cup and USL Playoffs, the young kids of LAFC2 and the Academy make their mark on a few youth national team camps, and Filly apparently tries hard NOT to make marks on his nice pants while watching the match. It may have taken 6 matches, but LAFC is finally done with the Vancouver portion of their 2023 schedule! LAFC dispatches Vancouver, 1-0, behind a Denis goal and another sparkling performance by Maxime Crepeau. It's on to the Western Conference Semis for the Black and Gold!

In a much more tense and nervy affair than we would have wanted, LAFC struck first behind a Denis Bouanga penalty goal. Mario Gonzalez earned the PK for LAFC after being sandwiched in the box by Tristan Blackmon, and Denis did the rest. His 36th goal this calendar year left him alone in 2nd place all-time in MLS, and now just 2 behind Vela's magical 2019 season total. 

The rest of the match saw a wonderful keeper battle between Maxime Crepeau and Yohei Takaoka, with Max needing 5 saves for the clean sheet. Murillo picked up a slight knock in the second half, Carlos Vela came on late, and LAFC got some help in the form of a takedown by referee Timothy Ford in the 1-0 win. Somewhere in Vancouver tonight, Vanni Sartini is still kicking things. 

Also on 284, we look back fondly on the one-year anniversary of winning MLS Cup, we bid farewell to the "Chicharito Era" in Carson, and we look ahead at potential playoff matchups. Filly rants, twice, about an Inter Miami friendly while Scarf looks ahead to the NWSL Final. Here's to a little break before Episode 285!

As LAFC embarks on its title defense, it's a familiar foe, as Vancouver returns to BMO for the first match in a ridiculous best-of-three First Round series. It's playoff time, Defenders, and this is Episode 283 of Defenders of the Banc!

LAFC started out hot, as Ryan Hollingshead cleaned up the mess after a beautiful set piece to give LAFC the lead 18 minutes in. Vancouver would answer after an awful turnover by Murillo, as Andres Cubas, back from injury, finds Brian White for the equalizer. 

Just two minutes later, the Golden Boot winner of 2023, Denis Bouanga, takes a long pass down the line from Giorgio, shifts to his right, and slams home his first of the match to give the lead back to the good guys. But as Lee Corso says... "Not so fast!" Vancouver comes back yet again, this time with set-piece success. Ryan Gauld finds Sam Adekugbe, and his header levels it at 2 just before halftime. 

After the half, THIS was the LAFC club we had been waiting to see all match. Defensively sound, allowing zero shots on target in the second half, LAFC was free to let their offensive freak flag fly. Ryan cleans up more set-piece debris for a goal, Denis hammers one home off a Carlos Vela free kick, and Air Murillo takes off in the box for a fifth! LAFC dominates the second half en route to an easy 5-2 win!

Decision Day! One of the most fun days on the MLS calendar is here, and LAFC can finish anywhere from 2nd to 4th depending on their result. As Filly and Scarf have their eye on games featuring Houston, Seattle, and of course Carson, Denis Bouanga has his sights set on LAFC's third Golden Boot in 5 years. 

LAFC started out strong, peppering Takaoka with a few shots and creating solid chances. However, after Ryan Hollingshead goes to ground early on Richie Laryea, Vancouver earns a PK. Ryan Gauld came into the match 6-for-6. He left the first half 6-for-7, as Maxime Crepeau makes a massive save to keep it scoreless.

In the 34', it was inevitable. Denis Bouanga, from distance, off a great steal and pass from Ilie, makes it 20 on the year and all but wraps up the Golden Boot. LAFC leads 1-0. It would remain 1-0 until the 58', as Ali Ahmed takes a pass from thorn-in-our-side Richie Laryea and ties it. Despite a second PK for Gauld (this one hit the crossbar) and a point-blank chance for Mario Gonzalez, this one would end scoreless. 

LAFC now heads to the First Round of the MLS Cup Playoffs, where they will play a best-of-three series against... these very same Vancouver Whitecaps. 

Also on 282, the boys welcome LAFC's newest owner, Shaun Neff, Filly makes up words and sings to new songs, and Scarf gets to have a mini 110 reunion with Vince La Rosa. Get ready for a LOT of Vancouver talk over the next few weeks, and enjoy Episode 282!

Just a few short matches ago, we here at Defenders of the Banc were lamenting the lack of scoring, with the number of minutes without a goal reaching into the 400's. Turn the page just one week, and LAFC seemingly can't stop scoring, with 5 in their last match and now 4 today in our win at Austin. Denis Bouanga strengthen's his grip on the Golden Boot while LAFC strengthen's its grip on the #2 spot in the West, and you can hear all about it on Episode 281!

LAFC raced out to a 4-0 lead, as Timothy Tillman and Cristian Olivera scored on either side of a Bouanga brace. WIth 15 minutes to go, LAFC got sloppy, allowing a goal from a set piece before a stoppage time header from... Giorgio Chiellini, of all people, to give Austin their second goal of the match and final goal at home for the year. A 4-2 win that Steve still has plenty to talk about? Perfect. 

Also on this episode, Filly eats an entire head of broccoli. Not cooked, not covered in cheese, not even salted or peppered... just... raw. Scarf almost chokes, we read our tweets live on air, and we bid farewell to Messi, Carson, and Wayne Rooney. It's Episode 281, and it's a good one!
