Join history student Rocky Jorgensen and Dr. Betsy Pike, assistant professor of Communication and esteemed Capital grad, as they discuss how bringing together different majors can create amazing experiences through Capital’s emerging media program. Housed in the Convergent Media Center, programs in public relations, film and media production, marketing, journalism, graphic design, and entertainment technology form a melting pot of student opportunities and areas of study. It’s all about pulling together creative students from a variety of majors across different academic disciplines and pushing them toward innovative and exciting real-world experiences.

Whether you are a first-year student or one who is registering for their final semester, time management can be one of the most challenging aspects of being in college. In Episode 8 of CapChat, junior Allie Rus and Associate Provost Keirsten Moore talk about the demands of classes, homework, extracurricular activities, jobs, self-care and sleep, and how to fit everything into a 168-hour week. With so much to do and keep track of, strong time management skills can make all the difference. Learn strategies to set yourself up for success – from how to use planners and Post-it Notes for organization, to the importance of finding quiet, dedicated study spaces and reaching out to professors and other campus resources (such as the Academic Success and the Center for Health and Wellness) to help you be the best person you can be.

Junior Aaron Sullivan, a dual major in Marketing and Financial Economics with a minor in Entrepreneurship, joins Finance and Economics professor Saurav Roychoudhury – more commonly known as “Dr. Roy” – to talk about job growth, internship opportunities, and the importance of having a basic understanding of business, regardless of your career path. With majors in Accounting, Financial Economics, Business Management, and Marketing, the university’s business curriculum is well-rounded in the fundamentals you'll need to be successful right out of college. Couple that with a myriad of opportunities for hands-on internships and you’ll have that competitive edge employers are looking for.

CapChat Season 2 continues with Episode 6 and ways to be financially smart. Sophomore Taylor Adams teams up with John Brown, Capital’s director of Financial Aid, to talk about paying for college, saving for life, and understanding the importance of creating a budget. As a student who has three on-campus jobs, Taylor shares tips about how she has been able to budget for her Capital education while starting to set herself up to feel financially secure after graduation. You’ll learn about scholarship options, how to find a work-study job, and why it’s important to maximize your meal plan – including giving your taste buds a treat with Cap Bucks as one of your dining options. John offers simple ideas about budgeting that will give students a sense of control over their money and teach them how to prioritize the spending of their hard-earned dollars. He also talks about the Financial Aid staff’s commitment to working with families to help them understand various ways of paying for a Capital education.

This season of CapChat brings all things science to Episode 5, showcasing how Capital University students and professors connect science to everyday life. Dr. Christine Anderson, associate professor of zoology, joins biology major Emma Young to talk about specific fields of study, growing careers, scientific research, service opportunities, and tackling the “wicked, sticky problems” that impact us globally. Capital creates unique learning opportunities in the classroom, the field and the lab, whether a student is interested in forensic science, medicine, conservation biology, hydrology, genetics or other areas of study. Dr. Anderson also talks about her role with the University’s Primmer Outdoor Learning Center in Logan, Ohio. The Primmer property provides hands-on opportunities for students to make a difference in areas such as forest fragmentation on small mammals; bringing back lost tree species; restoring prairies; and the human impact on biodiversity. You’ll also learn about opportunities for funded research, study abroad, internships, and on-campus paid positions as animal technicians and teaching assistants.

Having a student body of 3,400 means you won’t get lost in the crowd. About 1/3 of our students don’t come to Capital knowing “how to do college.” They’re the first in their families to do it. So we teach them how. From Financial Aid, Registrar’s Office and Resident Assistants to Professors, Public Safety Officers and even President Paul, helping our students succeed is everyone’s job. Choose Your Own Major Adventure

With Capital’s 60+ majors, 50+ minors and infinite combinations and possibilities, navigating the selection process can be intense. But it doesn’t have to be. In most cases, you have time to discover and explore. In Episode 1, we’ll take on the question that has most high school seniors feigning illness before their next family gathering just so they can avoid it: “What’s your major?” Don’t sweat the next birthday party or holiday. Embrace your uncertainty. It’s normal not have all the answers. It’s also normal to know exactly what you want to do.

Eric Anderson, director of Career Development, will walk us through Capital’s approach for advising students as they’re discovering how their talents and passion can translate into their major, and how their major can (but doesn’t have to) translate into their professional path. You’ll also learn how our faculty advisors guide you through the process and take the stress out of discovering and changing your major. Senior Moriah Reichert and cohosts Mary Clare Kunkel and John Honaker will share insights from their experiences as Capital students and alumni.
