And if it’s Florida hockey yinz want, then you’re in luck - the Penguins tonight kick off a three-game stint versus the Lightning and Panthers. Tonight’s game versus the Bolts will be played in Tampa, with the Cats curling up in Pittsburgh for a back-to-back residency at PPG Paints Arena on Saturday and Sunday. The Tampa team looks pretty darned dangerous and it’s never wise to count out a reigning Stanley Cup champ, regardless of (the Panthers’ mounting) ongoing injuries.

Diagnosed in 2016 with RYR-1-related malignant hyperthermia, Cody Hodgson’s promising NHL playing career was cut short when the effects of his disease made it impossible for him to push his body to the extent necessary in pro hockey. However, what initially looked like a major setback gave way to a very different, equally powerful calling. Now an active ambassador for the Pittsburgh, PA-based RYR-1 Foundation, Hodgson is precisely the kind of figure in the hockey world that our production staff loves connecting with.

With mobile recording gear in tow, our producer and co-host, Jeff Taylor recently joined the RYR-1 Foundation in Pittsburgh for their 10th anniversary conference. A handful of in-depth interviews were conducted that day, including with former NHL’er Cody Hodgson himself, as well as Toronto-based anesthesiologist Dr. Sheila Riazi, Hodgson’s diagnosing physician.

Rick Tocchet, David Carle, and others have been widely discussed as candidates to fill the vacancy Mike Sullivan left when he departed the Steel City. Jeff Taylor and Jordan DeFigio have at least one warm-to-hot take as to who might fit the bill behind the Pittsburgh Penguins' bench, especially while the team undergoes its nearly inevitable transitionary period.

Sidney Crosby's agent, Pat Brisson told Pierre LeBrun this weekend that his client would be traveling to Sweden to participate in the IIHF Men's World Championships. What's more, Crosby's longtime teammate and dear friend Marc André Fleury will be making the trip as well, representing Team Canada alongside his old captain.

Sid won't be Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia's sole ambassador in the tournament, though. Nathan McKinnon, newly unoccupied as his Avalanche were eliminated from contention in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, will dress beside Crosby and Fleury in Canada's locker room.

We’re joined today by The Athletic’s Josh Yohe, Pittsburgh Penguins beat reporter and one of our first proper guests. Josh is a fine example of someone who’s become a good friend and a generous collaborator in this unrivaled U.S. hockey town.

I started Fly Penguins Fly Podcast in the attic of the old Jersey City where I lived, along with my wife leading up to when we moved to Pittsburgh.

I still get a thrill out of creating and posting each episode, especially at this time when the Pittsburgh Penguins are rebuilding, in preparation for what - hopefully - will be an exciting, successful new era of hockey in the Steel City.

With an original working title of ‘Passenger Princess,’ production/release of this episode was delayed until close to the start of this evening’s road game versus the Sabres. And wouldn’t ya know it? Just as I sat down to knock out the edit and get this one posted, Sidney Crosby does what he does best: Contribute to his team’s offense.

It was a beautiful goal, featuring many of Crosby’s best attributes as an athlete and a teammate: On-ice awareness, positional intelligence, and a practiced ability to have quick hands, even from tough angles.

The puck ended up on Sid’s stick as he floated to the net front, and even though it was in-tight to his body, the captain managed to get a super-fast shot off, beating Billy Reimer high on the glove-side. Just incredible.

We’re not going to pull punches here, folks: The Pittsburgh Penguins are dismally bad at winning right now. They just can’t get over the hump most nights, particularly when they’re playing bottom-dwellers like the Ducks or Sharks. As the Pens head into the Shark Tank this evening for a 10:30pm puck drop against Macklin Celebrini and Co., it is this podcast’s opinion that (a Penguins fan) ought not get one’s hopes up.

The schedule over the next month is chalk-full of divisional games, versus teams the Pittsburgh Penguins haven’t necessarily fared too well agains. Frankly, in the interest of contending next season, this organization might do well to take the next 10-15 games as an ‘opportunity’ to climb in the draft lottery standings.

We close this episode out with a full discussion of Robert Eggers’s “Nosferatu,” a captivating new film that Jeff and Jordan took in, together, just last week. Warning, it’s definitely not a flic for the ultra-faint-of-heart.

Sweet sleeping zambonis. The Pittsburgh Penguins underachieved at biblical levels over the past handful of games, save a predictably unexpected stomping of their perennial daddies, the Edmonton Oilers. In that game, Sidney Crosby put on an absolute SHOW of offense and playmaking, but every other game since last Tuesday’s loss to Columbus has been a let-down.

Once Jordan and Jeff recap the Pens’ aforementioned standings skid, your co-hosts take some time to figure out which non-Penguins team they’ll potentially root for heading into a Pittsburgh-less playoffs. We’ve had it for now. At least until the back-to-back this weekend. Tuesday’s SO loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets positively broke Jeff’s brain. Jordan doesn’t seem too well-for-ware over it, herself. Your co-hosts had posted up at a South Hills gin mill for what they’d hoped would be a gratifying win over what Matt Vensel called “Border Rival” Columbus - alas, the story was all too familiar, with Jarry flailing to make even a single save in the shootout.

Keeping Up by Blue Dot Sessions

It was a weekend that saw the Pittsburgh Penguins visit the defending Stanley Cup Champions in Florida, then a team, in the Canes, who perennially gives the Pens fits - especially when the matchup happens on the road in Raleigh. On one hand, the song remained the same in that Pittsburgh put a great game on the ice against the Cats, essentially stealing a point against a first-class Florida lineup. On the other hand, the Penguins proceeded to do one of the things they do best: They blew (another) 2-goal lead against a divisional rival. After a great multi-goal first period in North Carolina, the Pens seemed to doze their way through the second frame and found themselves trailing after forty minutes. Another consolation point was salvaged, thanks to a late-game tally from Erik Karlsson, but neither players nor coach were left with a good taste in their mouths.

Jeff and Jordan preview a tough, tough week of upcoming matchups including the Columbus Blue Jackets (nearly tied with the Pens in the WC race) on Tuesday night, and the Edmonton Oilers (defending Western Conference Champs) on Thursday.

On the way to stealing a point from their loss to the Ottawa Senators on Saturday night, the Pittsburgh Penguins lost Marcus Pettersson to what has proven to be a week-to-week lower body injury. That’s not good, especially for a team who’ve just recently begun banking points en route to a possible wildcard berth.

Jeff’s gears have been ground. The culprit? The NHL’s decision not to include Russian players in a so-called ‘best-on-best’ tournament. Promoting an event as featuring the world’s most elite talent is far from genuine, when the odds-on favorite for Hart Trophy winner, Kirill Kaprizov is at home or on vacation. Alexander Ovechkin. Artemi Panarin. Igor Shesterkin. The list goes on, and none of them will be participating in what could otherwise have been a truly killer shindig.

It’s election day. Most people we know are somewhat on-edge, while some others are simply on their outside edges. The Penguins have traveled to Long Island for an early November tilt against the Isles, so we’re here to talk hockey AND election-induced anxiety.

Evgeni Malkin is the newest member of an incredibly exclusive club. Only forty-eight NHL’ers have reached the 500 goal mark, and the Russian Bear is the latest to do it - though he may be the first to do it from a seated position on the ice. Reaching the 1600 point plateau in the same game, Sidney Crosby tallied the lone assist on Malkin’s milestone goal, before himself potting the OTGWG in the Penguins’ Wednesday evening victory over Buffalo and thus triggering a Mac Miller dance party on Fifth Avenue.

Every 217 episodes or so, I forget to press record. Inexplicably, that’s just what happened at the start of what - we swear - was a memorable conversation with The Athletic’s Rob Rossi.

The trio - of Jordan DeFigio, Rob Rossi, and myself - did stick together on the call, long enough to capture a short recording of the aftermath of the sobering realization that I’d made a technical snafu. It actually made for a fun little assembly of audio, one I hope you’ll enjoy.

Elite summer hockey in Pittsburgh has a name: “G.O.A.T. League.”

As of this season, the top G.O.A.T. team earns more than just bragging rights through the Winter. The Cranberry Cup is ‘a thing,’ now, and it belongs to today’s guest - and Team Red’s captain - Christian Humphreys. That isn’t the only team Christian plays for, though. During the regular season, Humphreys is a member of Team USA’s U18 roster.

In this episode, you’ll also hear from the head coach of the Penguins Elite U18 program, Dan Mayes. Joining us in that conversation was Jackson Morehouse, a current G.O.A.T. League player himself and a Middlebury College commit for the ’23-24 regular season.

It’s been a WEEK for Kyle Dubas and the Pittsburgh Penguins. Brayden Yager was taken 14th overall by PIT, in Nashville, TN at the 2023 NHL Entry Draft. Yager attended prospect development camp this weekend, in Cranberry, PA, along with names already synonymous with the event - ones like Sam Poulin, Owen Pickering, Tristan Broz, and Taylor Gauthier to name a few.

Reilly Smith was traded to the Pens during the Nashville festivities, and when free agency hit just 48 hours ago, Kyle Dubas hit the ground RUNNING. Lars Eller and Ryan Graves are Penguins, along with a couple other recognizables; but it’s some of the lesser-known signings made by Dubas and PIT’s front office whom Jeff and Jordan discuss on today’s episode.

Oh, right: Tristan Jarry was signed to a FIVE YEAR, FIVE POINT THREE SEVEN MILLION DOLLAR (AAV) CONTRACT. (“Yes, typing in all caps made me feel a little better. Just like I’m feeling a little better about the Jarry contract since it was initially announced.” - JT)

Since last Jordan and Jeff recorded an episode - DO cue up last week’s “Live From The Hangar,” it was truly a good time - the PHF* has been bought outright by some very wealthy investors - ones directly associated with the PWHPA’s** attempts to establish a CBA of their own, thus laying the groundwork for a best-on-best women’s super league. This is a massive development in the future of women’s pro hockey, and according to an Allegheny County NPR Radio affiliate, the Steel City *just might* feature prominently in the new league’s plans for expansion.

** Professional Women’s Hockey Players Association, headed up by national team stars like Hillary Knight, Sarah Nurse, Kendall Coyne-Schofield, and Marie Philip-Poulin

As of this recording, the Bill Masterton Trophy hadn’t yet been awarded. We now know it was awarded to the Penguins’ own, Kris Letang. Félicitations, monsieur Letang! Also, the 23-24 regular season schedule has been released, and we are now aware of the date of the Pens’ home opener: October 10th at PPG Paints Arena, where they’ll face (Conor Bedard and) the Chicago Blackhawks.

This is not a drill: Jaromir Jagr was in town over the weekend. As in, 68 was INSIDE Pittsburgh city limits - physically. Could the Czech-born player’s visit to the 4-1-2 signal an impending jersey retirement, or even something more? Amid incessant speculation, among fans and the press about the Penguins’ ongoing search for a new GM, Jagr’s sudden in-the-flesh appearance in Allegheny County was nothing short of EXTREMELY refreshing. It’s fun news that transcends the playoffs, the upcoming draft, and it makes even the most stolid, pragmatic armchair pundit scratch their head: “COULD Jaromir Jagr be taking meetings about anything more than just a jersey retirement? An elevated role in player development, or something bigger?

Finally, Jordan and Jeff - but apparently, mostly just Jordan - are joined today, ever so briefly, by Penguins front office royalty. We hope you enjoy that.

Not everyone is the best at texting. One thing we can all agree on, though, is that the Eastern Conference Final matchup is set. The Carolina Hurricanes will have home ice advantage on the Florida Panthers, who themselves have defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs in the second round. In the West, both semi-final series could be headed to a seventh and decisive game, pending the result of the VGK@EDM game which is in progress as we record. On Saturday night, the Kraken defeated the Stars at home in Seattle, forcing a winner-take-all matchup on Monday in Dallas.

We rant about some hockey stuff in this episode, but we go on about some off-ice stuff, too.

Brian Burke, former President of Hockey Ops, was let go, as well. Jeff and Jordan rap about these “can jobs,” plus they opine on the flavor of cake which Jordan may well get into baking this evening, her tribute to the momentous occasion of Hexy’s jettisoning from the GM chair in Pittsburgh.

And that, to say nothing of the Penguins’ season coming to an untimely close, is a pretttttty dark thought to think. OK, folks: Let’s tune in and support these Pens, one last time, and root them on to defeat the presumed champs of the Conor Bedard Lottery (CBJ-CBL). Sidney Crosby. Evgeni Malkin. Kris Letang. Jake Guentzel. Bryan Rust. Jason Zucker. Rickard Rakell. These players put on a truly entertaining show this year, did they not? Of course, there are other fish who require frying, and those stories will play themselves out as the horn - and hopefully not the blackpowder cannon at Nationwide Arena - sounds for the final time tonight.

The mission today: Tonight. Win tonight. If the Penguins can do that, they’ll go to sleep in a WC spot, ready to pounce on the Jackets and secure a 17th consecutive playoff berth. There are 60 minutes of Penguins Hockey separating the Pens from said ticket-to-the-dance. Here’s hoping they play those 60 minutes in a manner they’d be proud of.

If you’re Mike Sullivan and the Pens, this is a night when you and your guys need to box above your collective weight class. Such an unlikely feat is one these Penguins will be required to achieve, on a regular basis, from now until the first offseason tee time is scheduled - regardless of how long they manage to put it off.

Goodness, Gracious. What a monumental victory on Saturday night, over the Washington Capitals at home in Pittsburgh. What appeared to be just another “blown lead in the third period,” was, in fact, a story destined to end a bit differently than those which Pens fans have become accustomed to having read to them before bed. Casey DeSmith was responsible for some downright mind-blowing saves in this one, and the crowd let him know it. A great result, on a night of great consequence for Allegheny County’s NHL Franchise. The Penguins are back in action tonight, at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan. The Redwings have a knack for playing spoiler this time of year, so in the words of Jurassic Park’s chief tech officer, Ray Arnold, “Hold onto your butts.”

There are times when off-ice stuff creeps into the zeitgeist, at a level where it infiltrates the ongoing conversations around fanbases outside the market of a story’s geographical origins. Jeff and Jordan delve into the situation in San Jose late last week, James Reimer’s open letter to the NHL and its fans, and the way it was all handled by the Sharks. The Pens are in Denver tonight, taking on the reigning Stanley Cup Champions, the Colorado Avalanche. To say there are big points on the line this evening would be a gross understatement.

Igor Shesterkin stood on his head Saturday night, yes he did. But that doesn’t explain the final score at MSG on March 18th, which was a 6-0 shutout by the Rangers over the Pittsburgh Penguins. In fact, the Penguins had a significant edge in high-danger chances and XGs. But some bad bounces, a great performance from a very good net minder in Shesterkin, and a handful of non-calls by the officials on duty, were the real culprits that lead to the final tally. Now, with Marcus Pettersson placed on the LTIR retroactive to Saturday night, PIT’s decimated D-corps - already short Jeff Petry, Dmitry Kulikov, and Jan Rutta - will strain to defend the Penguin blue line. How those defensemen fare, both tonight and in the coming games, will decide whether the Penguins teeter or totter, precariously balanced as they are on the brink. The stakes: Succeed and secure a 17th consecutive opportunity to compete for Lord Stanley’s coveted Cup. Crack under the pressure of a depleted roster, and scrappy teams like the Isles and Panthers will gladly leave you in their rear view mirrors.

A diner just needs to be ‘fine.’ The Tick Tock Diner, an NYC institution that may, in some ways, be the only proper diner in all of Manhattan, will take care of you if you’re hungry. It also just so happens to be across the street from Madison Square Garden, the site of tonight’s fourth-and-final regular season matchup between your Pittsburgh Penguins and the Rangers of New York City. Brian Dumoulin and Jeff Carter continue to dress for the Pens, something that will not change anytime soon, barring injury or a force majeure event of some kind. And those two guys… well, they’re dragging the team #down as much as the core three of Crosby/Malkin/Letang are dragging the team #along. That said, Jeff and Jordan will hope for the best but be emotionally prepared for …anything.

Daylight savings time is no fun for anyone, except plants. Even that, a pseudo-scientific “fact” we just came up with, is probably not something you’d want to toss into the middle of a 10 yr old’s birthday party in hopes of stoking joy levels. Oh, right: Hockey. Your Penguins ran up the score against the Flyers yesterday, shortly before today’s visiting Rangers came from behind to beat Buffalo in OT. That sets us all up for a mutual back-half of respective back-to-backs, doesn’t it? Word has it it’s our #1 goal, Tristan Jarry, about 180 feet down the ice from Jaroslav Halak, New York’s backup. Ryan Lindgren is still out for the Rangers, while Ryan Poehling hasn’t been spotted in the PIT lineup for ...some time. Nick Bonino has gone missing with a [insert yucky sounding word] kidney, giving us - well, literally nothing except - an episode title.

In St. Louis yesterday afternoon, the Penguins managed to steal an overtime win, despite surrendering another late-game lead. New father, Marcus Pettersson scored a dad-strength goal in the third period before the Pens allowed a Justin Faulk equalizer with less than three minutes remaining in the third frame. Like the Pens, the Lightning are coming into tonight’s matchup having played a game yesterday, so we figure to see a battle of backup goalies. To follow up yesterday’s victory with one on their home ice would be a much-needed boost for this backsliding Pittsburgh squad, no doubt. Jordan and Jeff wax on the merits of doom-think - if that’s a thing - and the episode kicks off with a fantastic goal call from friend-of-the-show, the Penguins Radio Network’s Josh Getzoff.

Dustin Tokarski is a new dad; like, REALLY new. My guess is he hasn’t slept in over 24 hours. Casey DeSmith starts in net tonight, and my guess is that means Casey DeSmith isn’t getting pulled even if he gives up a handful of goals in the first period. I thought Casey played damn well against the Capitals two nights ago, but coming as that performance was on the heels of a fairly dreadful outing against Florida on Tuesday, CDS has yet to establish himself as solid-of-late. Sending good vibes out to DeSmith, may the force be with him. For if it is not, the Penguins will likely go to sleep on the outside of the playoff picture. Buffalo, who are only 1pt back of Pittsburgh, themselves play Minnesota tonight, and I've got a feeling Buffalo will take that one. Let us pray.

It’s that time again: Sid versus Ovi, eighty-seven versus eight, Penguins versus the Capitals. It’s ALWAYS exciting, isn’t it? And these two teams seem to perennially compete for a playoff spot, destined to at least ‘brush past’ one another en route to a playoff run. In the case of PIT against WSH, the ‘brush-by’ in question is typically of the less-gentle variety, and tempers tend to flare. It’s DeSmith in net tonight and, at least of late, that hasn’t meant wonderful things for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Number one from Rochester, NH looks to steady his side-to-side rocking ship, to stop pucks, to Get A Win. Casey needs a clean W for himself and for his Penguins who, whether due to injury bugs, bad bounces, or off-ice misfortune, have for some time looked a long way off from the back-to-back champs they once were. Rather, the Pens have fairly remade themselves as the club who takes their sweet time establishing a collective identity - until pretty darned deep into each NHL campaign.

We may see the return of the return of the return tonight in Pittsburgh. Kris Letang’s personal and physical travails are the stuff of legend, especially this season. He’s really gotten the business end of whatever cosmic decision-making process occurs, out there in the aether of space and time. Injury. Recurring stroke. Another injury. Death of his father. And yet, like one of those water-weighted boxing-dummies that ALWAYS springs backup, ready for more, Letting is once again good to go, cleared for game action by the Pittsburgh Penguins’ coaching staff. It should be a thrilling thing to witness tonight, as 58 (probably?) lines up for the National Anthem at PPG Paints Arena for a tilt against Aleksander Barkov and the Florida Panthers.

Your Pens are on the road to take on the Devils at THE ROCK. Honestly, as a New Jersey native, I must say that the Prudential Center is a KILLER venue for NHL hockey. It’s also a TOUGH place to watch your team get beat. That said, the last Penguins road game I witnessed, as a resident of the Garden State was a W over the Devils. Let’s hope that Tristan Jarry, newly reinserted into PIT’s lineup and fresh off a clean, impressive, 44-save victory at home against Ottawa on Friday, can resume his All Star-caliber play. Moreover, the Penguins will need to ‘have-their-backstop’s-back,’ doing everything they can to contain the speedy Jersey squad. I start the episode with some tape from former Vancouver Canucks head coach, Bruce Boudreau. IMO, “Gabby” was fairly disrespected by GM Jim Rutherford, with the story of his impending firing leaking as early as November. What an awkward position to be in, no? And then to be unceremoniously dismissed as soon as the front office could get its chess pieces in place. Suppose that’s just the way the The Show works. Best wishes to Brucey and his family, he’s by all accounts a good person and a passionate hockey guy.

Last night at PPG Paints Arena, Jason Zucker decided he’d had enough. So, Zuck picked a fight with a much bigger guy and he did just fine. The Pittsburgh crowd went wild, but the Penguins kinda just went, “Wha?” … And so, the Pens got their butts handed to them by the Jets, and the Black-and-Yellow faithful were sent home just a little more bruised than they already were, after what’s been a pretty lousy first half of the 2022-23 season for Allegheny County, Pennsylvania’s NHL Franchise. Casey DeSmith goes between the pipes against the mighty Carolina Hurricanes tonight. Just maybe, this depleted, demoralized Pittsburgh team will play their hearts out for him tonight and earn themselves a much-needed character victory against one of the best teams in the world’s best league.

The Pens welcome the Winnipeg Jets for a home tilt on Pittsburgh ice, hoping to make it a ‘streak,’ after besting the Yotes and ‘Nucks over the past week. I stayed up late last night, watching the January 12, 1985 matchup of EDM@PIT, live from Civic Arena. It was Mario’s first time going up against Gretzky’s Oilers, and let me tell you: Apart from Lemieux scoring on his first shift, putting the Penguins up 1-0, the game used to be a HECK of a lot crazier back then. Obscene, uncalled violations of practically every sequence. Islanders mascot, Sparky The Dragon can’t seem make up his mind which team he wants to root for …at least that USED to be the case, when Sparky served as the mascot for the New York Dragons of Arena Football fame. The NHL’s New York Islanders, though unable to come up with their own mascot idea, have remained a thorn in the collective sides of the Pittsburgh Penguins Hockey Club. Brock Nelson looks to make his return following a brief stint on the IR, and he’s been red-hot of late. So, for that matter, has Sidney Patrick Crosby, the two veteran centermen with 35 (Crosby) and 34 (Nelson) points on the season, respectively.
