Joseph Did You Know?

Thinking Christianly About the Metaverse

Recently, Facebook executives announced the creation of the Metaverse. So what exactly is it? Well, in a nutshell, it is a virtual world, much like the fictional world in “Ready Player One”. With such a massive, new technology on the horizon, Christians need to know how to process it within a Christian Worldview. The Metaverse offers great opportunities to meet our culture where they are at with the Gospel, however, it also will present challenges that we need to be aware of. We hope that this episode will help you understand what the Metaverse is and how as Christians we can use it to further carry out the Great Commission.

Science Cannot Explain Everything, Pt. 2

Is science the answer to everything? Many in our culture seem to believe this, but it is far from the truth. In this episode, we take a look at one aspect of reality that science cannot explain: morality. Most people agree that there are objective moral truths, or right and wrongs, that apply to everyone. Because objective morality exists, a basic question that needs answering is: Where does morality come from? Science is inadequate to answer this question because science can only deal with the natural universe, and morality is an immaterial thing. Attempting to ground morality in biological evolution fails miserably. Theism offers a much better explanation of where morality came from. We hope that this episode will equip you to talk with others about your faith and provide compelling truths for a biblical worldview.

Science Cannot Explain Everything

Is science the answer to everything? Many in our culture seem to believe this, but it is far from the truth. In this episode, we take a look at one aspect of reality that science cannot explain: the cause for the beginning of the Universe. Science is a great tool to measure the material world, but it is an adequate tool to measure anything outside of the natural realm. When it comes to understanding the immaterial world, we need different tools that are adequate for the job. We hope that this episode will equip you to talk with your friends and family who regard science as the best and only way to know things. Many of us will be around family and friends this holiday season, so it is a great time to prepare for some apologetic conversations! Science cannot explain everything. We need reason, logic, and metaphysics too.

Crash Course on Critical Theory

What is Critical Theory? Many people talk about it and vilify it, but what exactly is it? If you don’t know what it is, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. This episode is a crash course on the main points of Critical Theory (CT). You may be surprised to find out that CT is not only about race, but about gender, sexuality, age, weight, abilities, and a host of other things. As Christians, we need to evaluate these types of cultural viewpoints and compare them with a biblical worldview. We hope that this episode will give you a quick understanding of CT and also help you to see how it is incompatible with a biblical worldview. We are praying that you will use this information to help those around you understand the flaws of CT and how Christianity makes sense of the way the world actually is.

How Doubts Can Strengthen Our Faith

A common misconception within Christianity is that we are not allowed to doubt. This false belief has led many people down the path of deconstruction. The Church should be a place that invites doubt, transparency, and honest discussion. When we doubt in a Christian community, our faith can be strengthened. However, if we doubt in isolation, deconstruction often results. As the Church, we need to come together, express our doubts, and seek answers together as a community. In this episode, we look at Biblical examples of doubt and what principles we can glean from them. We propose that doubting can strengthen our faith when we investigate our doubts in a community.

One of the greatest issues that men deal with is passivity. This reluctance to step up and do what is needed has been the root cause of many issues in the family, society, and the church. We firmly believe that so many of our current societal problems are happening because men are not doing what God has called them to do. The Bible is full of miracles. Moses, Elijah, Jesus, and the Disciples all performed amazing “signs and wonders”. But what qualifies as a miracle, and how do miracles apply to our lives today? Should we be expecting miracles to happen often? Does answered prayer qualify as a miracle? What about things that seem to be a coincidence? Does God get credit for them? In this episode we look at different classes of miracles and how they apply to our lives. We believe that using the word “miracle” when a miracle has not occurred is damaging to our witness and invites our skeptical friends to scrutinize our beliefs. Texas Heartbeat Bill & Personhood Apologetics

This past week the state of Texas passed a bill that was a huge win for the Pro-Life movement. In this episode, we talk about the bill, the opposition to it, and also about new tactics from the Pro-Abortion position. This new tactic makes the claim that personhood is what deems a human being with the right to life. The Pro-Abortion position is now making a distinction between a human being and a human person. We need to be prepared for this tactic, so in this episode, we give you an easy-to-remember argument that will keep you prepared to show how personhood cannot be separated from human biology. We hope that this episode will equip you to stand for life and to be an advocate for the most vulnerable and marginalized members of our society, the unborn.

Responding to Once Saved, Always Saved Objections

We recently had someone respond to our Once Saved Always Saved episode. This person clearly did not agree with us, and called OSAS a false gospel. So, we decided to respond to some of her arguments for why a believer can lose their salvation if they do not obey the Lord, live for him, and produce good works. Her arguments are very common objections to the once saved always saved position, so we thought this would be a good follow-up to our previous episode. As Christians we need to seriously consider the command of 2 Timothy 2:15, "Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.” Accurately handling God’s word is vital. So in this episode, we take a hard look at some of the Scriptures proposed by our objector on YouTube to argue that the once saved always saved position is wrong. We hope this will be beneficial to you and helps you to study the Bible well.

Gaining/Losing Eternal Rewards

Last week we talked about eternal security and how the Scriptures teach that once a person has believed in Jesus for their eternal life, they can never lose that eternal life. This week we want to talk about the importance of living for Jesus and how we can gain or lose eternal rewards based upon how we live our lives. Even though a believer in Jesus can never lose eternal life, we can still lose something of extreme importance. How can we know that we are going to heaven when we die? What should we look to for assurance of our salvation? How can we be sure that we really believed in Jesus and His sacrifice on the cross? What if I’m not really saved? These are common questions that Christians throughout the centuries have struggled with. The reason these doubts plague us is that salvation is extremely important to Christians. In this episode, we walk through what Scripture says about the assurance of our salvation, and what we need to look to in order to know that we are eternally secure. We hope that this episode will be an encouragement to you and that it alleviates any anxieties that you have over the security of your eternal life as a believer in Jesus.

Mourning Death with Resurrection Hope

Make Disciples, Not Excuses!

We all want to have neat, tidy, discipleship and evangelistic situations present themselves to us. So often we look for the ideal situations and miss out on opportunities to obey Jesus’s words in the Great Commission. In this episode, we look at Acts 16 to see how Paul and Silas utilized a variety of situations to obey the command to make disciples. Some situations are ideal, some are antagonistic, and some are completely undesirable. However, we are not called to obey Jesus when the scenario is perfect but to obey regardless of the scenarios we are in. We hope that you will use the apologetic and theological knowledge of our podcast to disciple others in the ways of Jesus. Apologetics is not merely about knowing why we believe what we believe, it is also about teaching others. We need to make disciples, not excuses.

Worldview: Postmodernism

One of the most dominant views in our current culture is postmodernism. When it comes to the physical universe, naturalism still reigns supreme. However, postmodernism is prevalent when it comes to the metaphysical world. Morality, spirituality, and truth are all viewed as relativistic in our society, and the reason for this is the accepted postmodern viewpoints. In this episode, we take a look at how postmodernism answers the 7 worldview questions. We then see if it is logical, factual, and livable. Slogans and mantras are used to promote specific ideologies within a culture. We often hear slogans so much that they become ingrained in our thinking and we do not scrutinize them as we should. We need to assess arguments based on their reason and evidence, but so often slogans lack both. Instead, our culture seems to be content with promoting strong emotional pleas, circular reasoning, name-calling, and appeals to popularity. Is “Homosexual” a Biblical Mistranslation?

For the past few decades, there has been a dispute about the word arsenokoitai, which has been translated as “homosexual,” in 1 Corinthians 6:9 and 1 Timothy 1:10. Currently, there is a movie in development called 1946, which is about this dispute. The 1946 movie, which is being made by pro-LGBTQ+ Christians, suggests that this error has caused a lot of pain and confusion over what God says about homosexuality. In this episode, we want to look at the arguments about the word that Paul uses in 1 Corinthians and 1 Timothy to see what the original Greek meaning was. By looking into the word, where it was derived from, and how we can know what it means, we hope to show that the claims of the 1946 movie are irrelevant to what Scripture says about homosexuality and that the longstanding interpretation of both Old and New Testaments are accurate in stating homosexual sex is a sin. We hope this episode will help you to think clearly about what Scripture says and that it will also equip you to talk with your friends, family, and neighbors about this issue in light of the arguments proposed in the 1946 movie.

Is Polygamy Permissible?

It is true that there are many Old-Testament Bible characters who were in polygamist marriages. Some of the greatest kings of Israel had multiple wives, and one of them was even called “A man after God’s own heart." Does the fact that Abraham, Jacob, Moses, Saul, David, and Solomon all had multiple wives mean that it is permissible to practice polygamy? Can we conclude that God views polygamy as a legitimate manner of marriage? Many have followed this line of argument, but the truth is that Scripture clearly teaches that polygamy is morally wrong. In this episode, we look at what Scripture teaches about marriage and why having multiple wives or husbands is actually harmful to human beings. Sex Before Marriage?

Buddhism: A Failed Quest to End Suffering

The purpose of Buddhism is to eliminate suffering, which is a very noble cause. The problem with Buddhism is what it gives up in order to try to eliminate suffering. Because of Buddhism's growing popularity, we, as Christians, need to know what it teaches and how we can help others to see that it is inadequate to eliminate suffering. The only way that suffering can be eliminated is with the destruction of evil, which requires someone powerful, who can set creation back to what it originally was. The only person who can do this is the God-man, Jesus Christ.

Scripture encourages Christians to walk in the light, confess our sins to God and to one another, and that by doing this, we can live the abundant life. Our fellowship with God, our authentic/transparent relationships with our Christian community, and our honesty are vital in having victory over the secret/hidden sins that so easily entangle us. Words are important when it comes to interpreting our Bibles. As we con tin in our bible study methods series, we are looking at the eXplanation of words in this episode. A great method for studying Scripture is to conduct word studies for the passages you are diving into. A word study helps us to understand the definitions/range of meaning of a word, and through looking at the context of the passage, we can see which definition is being used. This method will help ensure that we do not load our theological baggage onto a word and then read our presupposed doctrines into the text. The goal of good bible study methods is to understand what Scripture says and take from Scripture our doctrines and our practices. We hope this episode will teach you a new skill and that you will implement it in your Bible Study.

Real Jesus: Virgin Birth

Why is the virgin birth of Jesus even necessary? Is it just folklore, or does it fit within Christian theology? In this week’s episode, we take a look at the way human souls come into existence and discuss how Jesus became a human being. What we believe about the creation of the soul has a huge impact on sin and how it is transmitted to our species from Adam. It was necessary that Jesus did not come from the lineage of Adam, because if He did, He would have been infected with sin, just like the rest of us. Jesus's virgin birth enabled Him to be born sinless, and thus qualified to redeem us by being the perfect man who gave Himself as a sacrifice. We hope this will encourage you to think deeply about who Jesus is and what He came to accomplish.

Counterfeit Jesus: Atheism/Agnosticism

Continuing our series Counterfeit Jesus, this episode looks into the claims of atheists and agnostics in regard to who the historical Jesus actually was. Some claim that Jesus never even existed. However, many atheists and agnostics admit that Jesus existed, but they claim that he is not who the New Testament claims he is. As Christians, we need to be able to answer the arguments that suggest Jesus is not God, and that he did not rise from the dead. Is the deity and resurrection of Jesus a legendary account that developed over a period of time? Was Jesus lying? Was Jesus crazy? Were the writers of the New Testament lying? Were they crazy? These questions need to be answered with good evidence and reason. As we seek to defend the claims of Christianity, we need to be prepared for every counterfeit Jesus that is suggested by other religions, worldviews, and cults.

This year has been filled with anxiety, stress, angst, unrest, and worry. Circumstances have been hard, which has made a huge impact on the mental and emotional health of many of us. However, are there behaviors that we indulge in which contribute to the anxiety and stress we are feeling? What we fill our minds with has a huge impact on us. Sadly, many have been filling their minds with information about the pandemic, the election, and other tumultuous events in our culture. Often this leads to obsessions over what’s happening, what the truth is, and why your perspective must be the correct one. As followers of Christ, we should, instead, be looking to His example on how to deal with a chaotic culture and what kept Him anchored to the truth. Jesus lived in a time of unrest, political corruption, and racial tension, yet he didn’t let worry overwhelm Him. We have a lot to learn from our Master.

In this politically-charged season, it is very easy for us to vilify those on the opposite side of the political spectrum. So often we justify bad behavior toward our perceived enemies with excuses like, “They deserve it,” or, “They are animals.” As Christians, our Lord has given us different instructions on how we are to treat our perceived and our actual enemies. Jesus tells us to love them and to pray for them. This goes for our next-door neighbor, as well as our political, and spiritual authorities. This episode focusing on how important good Christian character is for the advancement of truth. We must stand for truth (and not back down), but we also must do so in a gentle, respectful, and winsome way. This week, in light of the election, we encourage you to go out and intentionally do something kind for a person who you know disagrees with your position. As Christians, we are called to love our neighbors, and also those who disagree with us. Let’s show our culture what followers of Christ are capable of, even in a culture that is so divided over politics.

This episode is about exploring the moral reasoning behind if and when Christians should allow one issue to dictate how the vote. Certain moral issues are more important than others, but how do we decide which take precedent over the others when presented with a moral dilemma. As Christians we need to be salt and light. We need to vote for the greater moral good, and we need our voice to be effective. Textual Variants: Verses That Shouldn't Be In The Bible

How do we know what should and should not be included in our Bibles? As Christians, we need to be aware of important textual variants in the Bible, and we need to know what we believe about them. There are three major textual variants that most likely were not a part of the original New Testament manuscripts: Mark 16:9-20, John 7:53-8:11, and 1 John 5:7-8 (in the KJV). This may come as a shock, but do not be alarmed! In this episode we will walk you through the arguments and the textual evidence for these three passages not being original. Additionally, we will look at one textual variant that scholars are undecided on whether or not it is original. After looking into these textual variants, we will assess how important they are for Christian faith and practice, and if they deeply effect any doctrines of Christianity. Our hope is that this episode will be an encouragement to you and that your confidence in Biblical transmission and translation will grow. Also, our goal is to equip you to be able to talk with critics of Christianity about Scripture and how we know that we have what the originals said.

Do We Have the Original New Testament?

How can we know what the original New Testament documents said? We do not have the original autographs of the New Testament authors. This has caused many to claim that we cannot know what they originally wrote and that the New Testament has been lost through many translations and transmissions. However, the science of textual criticism has much to say about how confident we can be in our modern New Testament containing what was originally written. In this episode we go through the manuscript evidence, the textual variants within the manuscripts, and the percentage of accuracy that we have for the New Testament. The evidence for our modern New Testament being accurate with the original is overwhelming and as a Christian, I am sure it will strengthen your confidence in Scripture. Just because the New Testament has been accurately transmitted, does not necessarily mean that what it says is true, that’s a different argument. However, we can be confident that we have what was originally written with 99% accuracy.

Non-Christian Sources & the New Testament

In addition to the New Testament, there are many Non-Christian sources that document Jesus' life and the existence of the early church. In this episode we investigate ten Non-Christian sources from the ancient world and compare what they say with what the New Testament says. This is an important aspect of discovering historical authenticity. The idea is that if the enemy of a certain cause agrees with things that their enemy says, we have good reason to believe that those things are reliable. Typically enemies do not carelessly agree with each other. So, when there is agreement, we can conclude that the accounts agreed upon most probably actually occurred. This is called Enemy Attestation and it is important for evaluating historical reliability. We hope that these sources will be an encouragement to you that Jesus actually existed, did many of the things that the New Testament claims, and that the Church spread across the Roman Empire within the 1st Century.

What clues are there that the New Testament was written by eyewitnesses? In this episode we investigate the internal evidence of the New Testament documents to see if we can make the case that they had to be written by people who experienced the events they explain. There are many embarrassing portions of Scripture, historically accurate depictions, and interlocking details that seem to indicate first-hand knowledge of the events recorded in the New Testament. Many skeptics have claimed that the New Testament documents fabricate history. Some even claim that the New Testament is full of legendary accounts that were written decades after Jesus death and that they cannot be taken as historically accurate. Christians need to know how to defend allegations made by skeptics and why we can have confidence that the New Testament is reliable and trustworthy.

Considering that Jesus endured all of that pain to save humanity, our response should be gratitude and awe at such a demonstration of selfless love. This episode is difficult to listen to as we get into the physical details of Jesus death. Although it is difficult, it is necessary for us to commemorate and gaze upon the death of Christ. It was at His death that our life was secured. Don't rush to Sunday in order to get to the happy ending. Feel the weight of Friday.
