Kent Steffes (born June 23, 1968 in Ann Arbor, Michigan) is a former professional beach volleyball player.

Steffes received his AAA beach rating while still attending Palisades High School. He was named the 1986 National High School Player of the Year and was the nation's most highly recruited high school senior. In 1987 with partner Forrest Smith he won the World Championships in San Diego. He enrolled at Stanford University and played for one season before transferring to UCLA where he graduated with a degree in Economics. While a Bruin he joined the AVP Tour full-time in 1988. Steffes earned the AVP No. 1 ranking at age 22, the youngest player to do so in the history of the sport.

Steffes and playing partner Karch Kiraly won the inaugural beach volleyball gold medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics. During the 1990s Steffes teamed with numerous partners to win over 110 events.

Steffes' career lasted from 1988 until 1999. As of October 2022, Steffes has the highest winning percentage in the history of the sport (48.6%)[1] and in 2020 was inducted into the USA Volleyball Hall of Fame as All-Time Great Male Beach Player Award.[2][3]

Steffes graduated from UCLA in 1993 with a bachelor's degree in economics. That same year he was a member of the AVP Board of Directors, and served as Secretary. In 2000 he enrolled in the Graduate School of Business at Stanford, where he graduated in 2002. He has two children and lives in Los Angeles where he writes and works in the financial industry.

Steffes is the co-author of the book Kings of Summer: The Rise of Beach Volleyball.[4] Together with his co-author Travis Mewhirter, it chronicles the rise of beach volleyball from a 1970s rebel culture to inclusion in the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. The book features an in depth look at the quarterfinal match which many consider the "Match of the Century."[5]

Upon graduating from the University of Pennsylvania with a BSN & MSN, I worked as a nurse practitioner in a group practice in NYC. After a few years, I decided to pursue an idea I had to develop a starter kit for new parents. The kit became a business, which was ultimately acquired by a health care company. Unfortunately, 9/11 had detrimental effects on our business and our parent company closed our division. I learned a tremendous amount through the experience and have subsequently applied many of the skills I acquired in a myriad of ways.

Following a move to Rye, NY with my husband and two young sons in 2002, I began utilizing my nursing, business and entrepreneurial skills to help a variety of local charities as a volunteer.

After participating in the 39-mile Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in 2006 in memory of one friend, in honor of another, and a year after having open heart surgery, I started a team for the 2007 Avon Walk. Little did I know that this would be the beginning of what SOUL RYEDERS is today - a 501(c)3 non-profit organization which supports anyone in the NY Tri-State area impacted by any type of cancer. In addition to providing personalized resources and offering several innovative programs, SOUL RYEDERS also awards grants to other local cancer-related organizations. 

In December 2020, I made the challenging decision to transition from my role as Executive Director of SOUL RYEDERS in an effort to free up time to pursue other interests. I continue to be a part of SOUL RYEDERS as an engaged Board member, strategic advisor, Giving Circle member, Grant Committee Co-Chair, and Young Survivor Group Coordinator.

Helping individuals facing terminal illness through SOUL RYEDERS inspired me to expand my knowledge about end-of-life care. Intrigued by the promising research about the safety and efficacy of psychedelic-assisted therapy for those impacted by life-threatening conditions, I began a personal learning journey to educate myself about the larger psychedelic ecosystem. In light of the current mental health crisis, and having had a keen interest in mental wellness since childhood, I am now focusing my time and energy towards helping move the needle forward in this field. 

In addition to SOUL RYEDERS, I am involved with several other non-profit organizations. While my true passion is helping those in need, I love spending time with family & friends, exercising, experiencing different cultures, meeting new people, listening to interesting podcasts, and curling up by the fireplace with a good book & a glass of wine!

Bio:

If the Pacific Northwest had a Mt. Rushmore of Comedy, this man’s head would be on it.  Brad opens for some of the biggest names in show business, performs all over the country for numerous corporate events, does 8-12 weeks a year all over the world on cruise ships, opens for the legendary Johnny Mathis and performs at a handful of clubs and casinos keeping his schedule very full.

In June of 2018 Brad went viral around the world! Dry Bar Comedy posted a video on Facebook and it had 36 million views in 10 days. They quickly followed with another and they combined for 47 million views in 11 days! His CD shot to Number 1 on the iTunes Comedy chart. Brad’s Dry Bar Comedy videos currently have a combined 170 million views! Needless to say, he’s much in demand!

Brad Upton was a 4th grade teacher and high school track coach when he stepped on stage for the very first time in September of 1984 and he’s never looked back. He quickly rose through the standup ranks making numerous television appearances and headlining comedy clubs from coast-to-coast.

In September of 2018 he surpassed 6000 lifetime performances. In a 34-year professional career there are too many highlights to name them all. He is a past winner of the Las Vegas  Comedy Festival and appeared at Caesar’s Palace as part of the HBO Comedy Festival. He has spent the last twelve years as the opening act for the legendary Johnny Mathis and did multiple shows all over the country with the late, great Joan Rivers. He has also been seen in concert with The Smothers Brothers, Smokey Robinson, Little Big Town, Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton, Lewis Black, George Jones, Glen Campbell, Pam Tillis, Neal McCoy and many others.

All over North America isn’t the only place Brad performs. Brad has headlined in Sydney, Singapore, Hong Kong, The MGM in Macau and did eight nights in Israel as part of the Comedy for Koby benefit. In the fall of 2017 he performed for four nights at Comedy Masala in Karachi, Pakistan. His new CD entitled, “Brad Uptonogood” is heard regularly on Sirius Satellite Radio and is available online wherever music is sold. He also just released his first DVD entitled, “Brad Upton, Live from the 509”.

Writing about everyday life, a long term marriage and anything else that pops into his head, Brad packs more laughs-per-minute into his set than nearly anyone in the business. It’s not all comedy either; he actually has a hobby that keeps him busy every spring. Brad and his wife of 34 years, have a 27-year old son and 24-year old daughter….they are empty-nest, cul-de-sac dwellers.

A few simple pictures we can all agree on  - one human - one planet - you know, stuff that really shouldn't be a  dispute at all. 

Fundamental truths everyone should know. The ones you don't really need to learn but instead  un-learn as you're indoctrinated into culture and society. Can we re-adjust the baseline to eliminate things like racism just as a start.

We now have the capability to create global messaging. It can be pictures so you don't even need a language to understand it.

I'm sure I'm way too utopian and optimistic about it...but someone has to be to know it's possible. Right?
