Welcome to feminized, today I’m excited chat with The Successful Canna-preneur, JM Balbuena. She’s a San Diego-based author, filmmaker, advocate, and entrepreneur focused on empowering aspiring leaders in the rapidly growing legal cannabis space.

Navy veteran JM was born in the Dominican Republic and came to America at the age of 13. JM received a Navy & Marine Corps Achievement Medal for her dedicated service as Aviation Electronics Tech in the United States Navy between 2010 to 2014. While serving in the military, JM suffered an accident, and upon leaving the service the Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) from that accident disrupted JM’s sleeping and eating habits. JM also experienced chronic headaches and back pain. All of which led to anxiety and depression. Thank GOD JM was introduced to cannabis as medicine and credits cannabis with saving her life — helping JM regulate sleep, eating, and managing physical and mental pain.

Today I’m joined by fiery DC insider and founder of Panoptic Strategies, Gretchen Gailey. I loved this conversation!!!! Gretchen is a Cannabis Communications Strategist who works with brands and advocacy groups on promoting the myriad benefits of cannabis to a mainstream, general audience with little to no understanding of the plant, the movement, or the positive effects that embracing more progressive cannabis policy could have.

As a former journalist in DC, Gretchen has always been a champion of the truth no matter the cost. Her network is vast and she’s spent a lifetime of building trusted sources through sharing and receiving sensitive information with big implications. In 2015 she turned her focus on cannabis through leading research firm New Frontier Data, and has never looked back. She’s not a consumer, but a champion of cannabis, to this makes her uniquely positoned to have those conversations with an audience who may still be under the spell of prohibition propaganda. Despite feeling a little imposter syndrome and insecurity about being a first-time business owner, Gretchen pushed through and is now successfully making an impact in service of the people who need the plant.

A graduate of Oaksterdam University, Angela draws from trailblazing experience in cannabis entrepreneurship under California’s Proposition 215 medical marijuana program and the recently implemented AUMA adult-use regulatory framework. Angela’s first-hand knowledge of the many facets in day-to-day work performed at startups in the space—from cultivation and budtending, retail design and staffing, to dispatching drivers and office management—forms the foundation of her mentorship with aspiring new employees, businesses, and equity entrepreneurs.

Currently Angela’s focus is developing sustainable career and entrepreneurial paths previously less accessible to communities impacted by inequality and the War on Drugs. I loved speaking with Angela about the growth of the industry and success stories within her very own community, and learning from her deep wisdom of the wounds still healing from the War on Drugs. These 2 women co-created the “Dopest Chamber America has ever seen” by bringing together folks working in all facets of cannabis to drive policy, network, and collaborate to create a stronger cannabis industry. No small feat, but after you get to know Tina and Dani in this episode, you’ll understand how they did it, and get excited about what’s next because they’re just getting started.

The Chamber of Cannabis is a non-profit organization designed to unite cannabis industry professionals who strive to build a more inclusive industry.
