Merlin Sheldrake is a biologist, writer, and speaker with a background in plant sciences, microbiology, ecology, and the history and philosophy of science. He received a Ph.D. in tropical ecology from Cambridge University for his work on underground fungal networks in tropical forests in Panama. His book, Entangled Life, is a New York Times and Sunday Times bestseller, won the Royal Society Book Prize and the Wainwright Prize. Merlin’s research ranges from fungal biology, to the history of Amazonian ethnobotany, to the relationship between sound and form in resonant systems. A keen brewer and fermenter, he is fascinated by the relationships that arise between humans and more-than-human organisms. He is a musician and performs on the piano and accordion.

Zarifa - one of Afghanistan’s youngest female mayors to ever be elected, had to flee the country to Germany last year when the Taliban regained power. She's been tirelessly advocating for women’s rights in a country with one of the highest gender gaps between men and women globally. 

She is someone who has defied the odds to reach her leadership position but it has not been without sacrifice - she survived 4 assassination attempts, 1 which ultimately killed her Father, General Abdul Wasi Ghafari.

Nemonte Nenquimo is a Waorani woman, mother and leader, who has dedicated her life to the defence of Indigenous ancestral territory and cultural survival in the Amazon rainforest. She is the co-founder of the Indigenous-led nonprofit organisation Ceibo Alliance and its sister organisation Amazon Frontlines, the first female president of the Waorani organisation of Pastaza province, winner of the Goldman Environmental Prize for Central and South America, the United Nations’ Champions of the Earth Award, BBC 100 Women of 2020 and TIME 100 most influential people in the world. 

And the ultimate environmental award… Nemonte had a brand new Ecuadorian Lizard species named after her.

In light of the UN’s call for “transformative systemic change”, in this week’s episode Lily explores how that systemic change might actually happen: wondering if our legal and political machinery is up to the task, and asking why people are taking to the streets, and even getting arrested, to try to change our laws.

Guests include the UK’s Conservative Environmental Minister Zac Goldsmith, Green Party MP Caroline Lucas, environmental lawyer and activist Farhana Yamin and co-founder of Extinction Rebellion Gail Bradbrook.

This week, Lily addresses a paradox in the environmental movement - affordability. Is our economy structured in a way that makes being environmental prohibitively expensive? Or are the wealthy creating most of the emissions? How do we afford sustainability and can we afford not to?

This episode also includes writer Alison Stine, advocate of carbon pricing Elon Musk and anthropologist James Suzman who discusses the origins of inequality. As ever, Lily creates a space of discussion and discovery, encouraging us to seek optimism in the solutions that exist.
