Pettycoat Lane

This podcast is all about your business. Your lady business! We ask some common questions (and maybe some not so common questions) and we get answers from experts (and some not so experts) about women and vaginas. We want to bring the vaginas out into the light. Making a comfortable space to talk about our bodies and the weird things it does.

Vaginas 101.2

Vaginal opening (a.k.a. vestibule or introitus)

“When most women refer to the vagina, they are really referring to the vestibule,” says Minkin. It's the area immediately outside the vagina that extends from the labia minora to the hymen.

Vagina

“The vagina is an elastic, muscular canal with a soft, flexible lining that provides lubrication and sensation,” says Minkin.

A healthy vagina is a rich, deep pink color and has a number of accordion-like folds on the interior walls that allow for maximum elasticity. The vaginal wall is about three to four millimeters think and often appears moist.

In a non-aroused state, the walls of the vagina are collapsed against each other

Cervix

The cervix connects your uterus to your vagina."it looks like a donut with a tiny hole in the middle" to let menstrual blood out and sperm in. “During labor, it opens or ‘dilates’ fully to allow the baby to pass through to the vagina to be born.”

You can typically feel your cervix at the end of your vagina if you insert your fingers. It's also what ob-gyns take a swab of during a Pap test (cue the cringing). Luckily, your cervix acts as the gatekeeper to the rest of your body—so don't worry about tampons or other objects getting lost inside you.

Ovaries

You have two ovaries—one on either side of your lower abdomen, below your belly button. “This is where the hormones—including estrogen—that trigger menstruation are produced,” says Minkin. “They also store eggs, and release at least one each month for possible fertilization, which is known as ovulation.”

Fallopian tubes

You also have two fallopian tubes that extend from your ovaries to your uterus. “After the egg is released during ovulation, it moves into the fallopian tube, where it stays for about 24 hours, waiting for a single sperm to fertilize it,” says Minkin.

“If fertilization doesn’t occur, the egg moves through the uterus and disintegrates," says Minkin. That's what eventually causes your period—when those hormone levels begin to fall and your body starts shedding the uterine lining.

If there is a sperm available to fertilize the egg, however, the fertilized egg stays in the fallopian tube for three to four days before moving into the uterus for implantation, says Minkin.

Uterus

Also known as the womb, this muscular organ—located in the lower abdomen between the bladder and the rectum—is usually the size of a small pear when a woman isn’t pregnant.

“If an egg is fertilized and becomes an embryo, it attaches to a wall of the uterus, creates a placenta, and develops into a baby,” explains Minkin. “During pregnancy, the uterus expands to hold whatever it needs to, whether a six-pound baby or quadruplets. During labor, it contracts to push the baby down through the cervix and into the vagina for birth.”

Also, fun fact: The lower part of your uterus actually lifts toward your belly button when you're turned on. This process is called vaginal tenting, according to Planned Parenthood, and is a way for the vagina to make more room for whatever wants to come in.

Vaginas 101

The Vulva

The vulva covers the entrance to the vagina. The vulva has five parts: mons pubis, labia, clitoris, urinary opening, and vaginal opening.

The mons pubis is the mound of tissue and skin above your legs, in the middle. This area becomes covered with hair when you go through puberty.

The labia are the two sets of skin folds (often called lips) on either side of the opening of the vagina.

The labia majora are the outer lips, and the labia minora are the inner lips. It is normal for the labia to look different from each other.

While many people think that the clitoris is a small spot just above the vaginal opening, it is, in fact, a much larger complex. The part most visible is the glans, which is 16 millimeters in length, on average. This is the part that most people will be familiar with.

The glans is covered by the prepuce, which is a skin formed from the vaginal labia. Some people liken the prepuce to foreskin. Hidden inside the pubic bone is the rest of the clitoris, and the entire complex is similar in shape to the penis, with a total length of between 9 and 11 centimeters.

The clitoris is an erectile organ and is thought to be at the heart of female sexual arousal.

The urinary opening, below the clitoris, is where your urine (pee) leaves the body.

Perineum- “This soft, sensitive territory lies between the vaginal opening and the anus and is sometimes quite short,” says Minkin.

When relaxed, this area can facilitate birth.

Odor

What does a vagina smell like?

https://www.healthline.com/health/womens-health/vagina-smells#1

Normal smells for a healthy vagina

Tangy or fermented

It’s very common for vaginas to produce a tangy or sour aroma. Some compare it to the smell of fermented foods. In fact, yogurt, sourdough bread, and even some sour beer contain the same type of good bacteria that dominate most healthy vaginas: Lactobacilli.

If it smells curiously similar to that sour IPA you had last weekend, don’t freak out.

Reasons for a tangy odor

Acidity. The pH of a healthy vagina is slightly acidic, between 3.8 and 4.5. “The Lactobacilli bacteria keep the vagina acidic,” says Minkin. “This protects against an overgrowth of the bad kinds of bacteria.”

Coppery like a penny

Many people report smelling a coppery, metallic vaginal odor. This is usually nothing to worry about. Rarely, it signifies a more serious problem.

Reasons for a coppery odor

Blood. Blood contains iron, which has a metallic smell. The most common reason for blood is menstruation. During your period, blood and tissue shed from your uterine lining and travel through your vaginal canal.

Sex. Light bleeding after sex can be common. This is usually due to vaginal dryness or vigorous sex that can cause small cuts or scrapes. To prevent this, try using lube.

A coppery smell can also be due to less common, but serious, causes of vaginal bleeding. The metallic scent shouldn’t linger too long after your period is over. If your vagina has had contact with semen, this may change the pH level and cause a metallic smell.

Sweet like molasses

When we say sweet we don’t mean freshly baked cookies sweet. We mean robust and earthy. But don’t fret, a sweetish tinge is no cause for concern.

Reasons for a sweet odor

Bacteria. Yep, bacteria again. Your vaginal pH is an ever-changing bacterial ecosystem. And sometimes this means you might smell a little sweet.

Chemical like a newly cleaned bathroom

An odor similar to bleach or ammonia could be a couple of different things. Sometimes, this odor is a reason to see a doctor.

Reasons for a chemical odor

Urine. Urine contains a byproduct of ammonia called urea. A buildup of urine in your underwear or around your vulva could put off a chemical smell. Keep in mind, urine smelling strongly of ammonia is a sign of dehydration.

Bacterial vaginosis. It’s also possible a chemical-like smell is a sign of bacterial vaginosis. “A chemical smell often falls under the category of fishy,” says Minkin.

Bacterial vaginosis is a very common infection. Symptoms include:

a foul or fishy odor

thin gray, white, or green discharge

vaginal itching

burning during urination

Skunky like BO or a smoked herbal, earthy scent

No, it’s not just you. Many people find a similarity between body odor and marijuana. Sadly, there isn’t a good scientific answer for this, although Vice did take a stab at it. But thanks to the sweat glands down there, at least we do know why vaginas and body odor can smell so similar.

Reasons for a skunky odor

Emotional stress. Your body contains two types of sweat glands, apocrine and eccrine. The eccrine glands produce sweat to cool your body down and the apocrine glands respond to your emotions. These apocrine glands populate your armpits and, you guessed it, your groin.

When you are stressed or anxious, the apocrine glands produce a milky fluid. On its own this fluid is odorless. But when this fluid contacts the abundance of vaginal bacteria on your vulva, it can produce a pungent aroma.

Fishy or that fillet you forgot about

You’ve probably heard an abnormal vaginal odor described as fishy. In fact, fresh fish shouldn’t smell like much at all. Decomposing fish is the more apt comparison. Why? Trimethylamine, which is the chemical compound responsible for both the distinct aroma of rotting fish and some abnormal vaginal odors.

Reasons for a dead fish odor

Bacterial vaginosis. “You get bacterial vaginosis when there’s an overgrowth of anaerobic bacteria in the vagina,” says Minkin. “And these anaerobic organisms are odorous.”

Trichomoniasis. Trichomoniasis is the most common curable sexually transmitted infection and easily treatable with a course of antibiotics. It’s known for its pungent fishy odor. “The trichomoniasis infection can be quite smelly,” says Minkin. “It’s a more pronounced fishy odor than bacterial vaginosis.”

Rotten like a decaying organism

A rotten odor that makes your nose wince and your face contort is definitely not the norm.

If the smell is putrid, like a dead organism, it may not be your vagina but something in your vagina.

Reasons for a rotten odor

A forgotten tampon. Inadvertently letting a tampon go days, even weeks, inside a vagina is much more common than you’d think. “I can’t tell you how many tampons I’ve taken out of patients,” says Minkin. “This happens to lots and lots of people. It isn’t something you need to be embarrassed about.”

See your doctor if an odor is accompanied by:

itching or burning

pain

pain during sex

thick, cottage cheese discharge

vaginal bleeding unrelated to your period

Menopause changes the pH level with the change estrogen levels.

Pregnancy changes the pH level too

Plus your smell of smell can be enhanced while pregnant and you might smell your vagina more, but don’t worry no one else can.

Menopause

Menopause

Menopause is actually three different stages in your life

Peri-menopause refers to the 4-10 years before menopause when your ovaries slowly produce less estrogen.

Menopause refers to the time when your menstrual periods have stopped for at least a year

Post-menopause is the stage of life after you have not had a period for 12 months or longer

Pre-menopause: Symptoms usually last 4 years but can last as long as 10. This is when you start getting hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal dryness.

During perimenopause, your body begins to make less estrogen. This continues until the last one or two years of perimenopause until your hormone levels drop rapidly. You can still become pregnant during this time.

Loss of estrogen leads to things like:

Hair thinning/ hair loss

Dry skin and less elasticity

Migraines

Memory loss

Body odor

Sleep disruption

Mood changes

Weight gain

Heavier periods

Vaginal dryness

another side effect of your body’s drop in estrogen. You can use lube at home but if that doesn't help you can see your doctor for other options like estrogen treatments.

Menopause is officially diagnosed after you have gone 12 months of amenorrhea (without your period) after pre-menopause.

After menopause symptoms like hot and cold flashes, night sweats, mood swings, etc. can last up for 5 more years but usually start to decrease 3 years into menopause.

Menopause is essentially the same as pre-menopause minus your period.

Post-menopause

Yay, no period

Yay, no birth control!

You can still get STI’s so you should still use condoms and the like

You may be at increased risk for the following conditions after menopause:

osteoporosis

cardiovascular disease

depression and other mental health conditions

Home Remedies

Yoni Steaming

WHAT IS IT?

https://www.soulvibrance.com/yoni-steam/

http://mayamoonhealingarts.com/bajos-vaginal-steams/ https://www.cosmopolitan.com/sex-love/a14512508/diy-budget-yoni-steam-review/

According to this website:

Yoni steaming, also known as vaginal steaming, is a practice in which a woman allows the warmth of herbal steam to permeate the exterior of her vagina. Respected by healers around the globe, yoni steaming is an opportunity to reconnect with your body and utilize the wisdom of plant medicine to heal your cycle.

What it’s SUPPOSED to do:

Significantly reduce pain, bloating and exhaustion associated with menstruation.

Decrease menstrual flow as well as reduce dark purple or brown blood at the onset or end of menses.

Regulate irregular or absent menstrual cycles.

Increase fertility, especially when combined with ATMAT

Speed healing and tone the reproductive system after birth.

Reduce uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, uterine weakness, uterine prolapse & endometriosis.

Assist with the repair of a vaginal tear, episiotomy, or C-section scar.

Assist with the healing of hemorrhoids.

Relieve chronic vaginal/yeast infections, and works to maintain healthy odor.

Ease symptoms of menopause including dryness or pain during intercourse.

Detoxify the womb and remove toxins from the body.

Release stored emotions and tap into the energy that is our creative potential.

What has it been proven to do?

...I don’t know. The only scientific anything i’ve been able to find is that there’s No scientific evidence that it does work. But no links to the science?

Maybe why you shouldn’t do it

https://www.womenshealthmag.com/health/a19949929/gwyneth-paltrow-v-steam/

It can burn

Worse case scenario it can get too hot and burn you

It can mess with your vaginas good bacteria

Just like regular douching, trying to "cleanse" your vag with steam can be drying and disrupt the natural bacteria that lives up in there. And since the vagina is a self-cleaning machine, you don't need to take any action to keep it that way

It won’t actually balance your hormones

There are no hormonce produced by/in your vagina. That only happens in your ovaries and the steam isn’t going to make it up that far.

What is in it?

It is preferable to use dried herbs unless you are using rosemary, juniper or cedar – you can use those plants when they are fresh as they contain a high amount of volatile oils when fresh.

The typical ratio is 1 Quart of fresh herb or 1 Cup of dry for a large pot of water. Choose 1-5 herbs for your steam.

You can choose plants that you have a spiritual connection with that may not be specific for the physical ailment but will support your emotional well being.

Herbs that have an affinity for the urinary and reproductive organs; Red Raspberry Leaf, Juniper, Motherwort, Peony and Dong Quai.

Herbs that contain volatile oils; Basil, Oregano, Lavender, Rosemary, Marigold, Garden Sage, Peppermint and Lemon Balm.

Herbs that are astringent or tonifying; Witch Hazel, Yarrow, Cedar Berries, Rose and Juniper.

Traditional herbs the Maya use are Oregano, Basil, Marigold, Rosemary, Chamomile, Damiana, Plantain, Yarrow.

How do you do it?

It is important when working with the plants that you build a relationship with them. You can do this by asking the plants and the water to help you in what you are trying to heal at that time.

Choose your formula.

1 qt. fresh herb or 1 cup dry.

Place herbs in a pot of lukewarm water.

If possible, let sit in the moon light overnight, imbuing the water and plants with the moonlight, with your prayers and allowing the water and plants to absorb each other.

The following day, bring to a gentle simmer with the lid on for 20 minutes.

Set up your steam space; turn off your phone, put music on if you’d like, or grab your favorite book, light candles, or make a cup of tea to enjoy while you are steaming.

Once you are set up pour your steam water into a different pot as to avoid burning the floor.

Place your steam pot under a slotted chair, step stool with slot, lawn chair or steam stool.

Remove your clothes from the waist down, leaving your socks on, keeping your upper body warm.

Sit on your designated seat over the steaming herbs making sure the steam pot is placed underneath the body so the steam gets to the perineum.

Drape your lower body with blankets that extend all the way to the floor to ensure the steam is contained.

Be careful not to burn yourself. If necessary, create a small vent to allow excess steam to escape, it should feel pleasant.

Sit over your steam for about 15-20 min. depending on the temperature.

Simply enjoy the healing and nurturing time you have set aside for yourself.

When you are done, dry yourself off.

Rest quietly after the steam in a warm room, free of drafts, open windows or air conditioning, for at least 20 minutes.

When you get up, dress warmly and protect yourself from cold drafts or sudden temperature changes for 24 hours.

Release the herbs and water back to the earth – giving thanks for their support in your healing.

Vaginal Detoxing

https://metro.co.uk/2016/01/14/people-are-putting-balls-of-herbs-into-their-vaginas-to-detox-their-wombs-5622949/

https://goddessdetox.org/products/goddessvaginaldetoxpearls?variant=10854907137

Steaming is considered a type of detox, other ways that people try to “detox” their vaginas is with “detox pearls” which are little balls of herbs/oils and they actually stick them up into their vagina.

Most of the articles and how to videos I found say that it detoxes your womb… Lets just take a minute to point out that your vagina is not your womb.

What is in them

Muslin Cloth

Motherwort

Angelica

Borneol

rhubarb

Vagina Tightening

Lotions and gels

All of the ones I found online say that you put the lotion on your fingers and rub on your vaginal walls to help tighten it

A Stick

IT’S A STICK

“This vagina tightening stick has rapidly tightening effect on women's vaginal relaxation, it can help you to regulate sex apathy, improve elasticity of the vagina and enhance sex sensation. Higher rates are seen in teens and African-American and Hispanic women. Besides making themselves feel fresher, women say they douche to get rid of unpleasant odors, wash away menstrual blood after their period, avoid getting sexually transmitted diseases, and prevent a pregnancy after intercourse.

What does a douche look like?

Disadvantages

Overall, the risks of douching far outweigh the benefits.

Vaginal infections (bacterial vaginosis). Douching upsets the natural balance of bacteria in the vagina (called vaginal flora). These changes make the environment more favorable for the growth of bacteria that cause infection. Studies have found that women who stopped douching were less likely to have bacterial vaginosis. Having bacterial vaginosis can increase the risk of preterm labor and sexually transmitted infections.

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). PID is an infection of the uterus, fallopian tubes, and/or ovaries. Research has found that women who douche may have a 73% higher risk of getting PID.

Pregnancy complications. Women who douche more than once a week have more difficulty getting pregnant than those who don't douche. Douching may also increase the risk of ectopic pregnancy by as much as 76%. With an ectopic pregnancy, the embryo implants outside the uterus. The more a woman douches, the greater the risk of having an ectopic pregnancy.

Cervical cancer . Douching at least once a week has been linked to a possible increased chance of developing cervical cancer.
