In this episode, Amanda Zimmerman, PA-C, sheds light on the opioid crisis in the United States. She brings attention to the fact that prescription pain medications can be a gateway to substance misuse and opioid use disorder not just for the individuals who were prescribed the medication, but also for those around them—emphasizing the importance of counseling patients on safe opioid practices. Counseling points include when patients should contact their providers, how to store pain medication, and how to dispose of pain medications.
Interprofessional Case Discussions

In this episode, Samantha Catanzano, PharmD, BCPP, and Andrew Friedman, MD, host a discussion of 2 patients who are receiving opioid therapy. The first case details a patient with restless legs syndrome who was prescribed tramadol by his previous provider; he now presents with complaints of constipation and headache. Dr Catanzano provides valuable insights on how to approach a taper for this patient and trial a more appropriate medication.
