"B of the D" w/ Justine Bowe (Photocomfort, ex-Magic Man)

Justine Bowe is a singer-songwriter, vocalist and keyboard player from the Boston area. She was a member of the pop group Magic Man, with whom she played some insanely huge rooms to insanely huge crowds. Now she's focusing on getting her solo project Photocomfort to the same towering heights. Or is she??? We attempt to get to the bottom of this and other mysteries, like if it's possible to separate your onstage & offstage selves, the division of labor in fulltime creative gigs and whether to identify people by what they do for work or for fun.

Dylan Hanwright and Malia Seavey joined me from The Wormhole, Dylan's recording studio, show space and residence in Seattle. Dylan plays guitar in Great Grandpa and several other bands, including the recently-reformed-just-to-break-up-again I Kill Giants. Malia is a designer, screenprinter and multitalented musician who sings in Salt Lick and drums in Dogbreth. We talked about video game music, Berklee and how things get rolling until the band is bigger than you alone.

Anthony Gesa plays guitar in Gatherers, one of the best current bands in the oddly specific screamo/post-rock/post-hardcore milieu. He also works with the record label and management firm Party Smasher Inc. and spent the better part of two years on the road with The Dillinger Escape Plan as they traveled the world on their farewell tour. We talked about how love interests can guide our musical decision making for better or worse, the foolhardiness (or not?) of vocational training for the music business, and being warned not to walk around sightseeing in India.

Big In Canada w/ Daniel Thomson (Sparrows)

Dan Thompson sings and plays guitar in the post-hardcore band Sparrows, straight outta Ontario. Dan is Canadian but I don't hold that against him. He joined me at One Sellin' Out Plaza to provide a crucial international perspective, like how back home he and his wife could have a baby and not be in debt to a private hospital system for like 10 years but I think I cut that part out because being debt-free is extremely not punk.

MUSIC FROM THE SHOW:

Sparrows, "If We Make It Over the Mountain" (from Let The Silence Stay Where It Was)

Sparrows, "Carrying On With A Modern Lifespan" (from Let The Silence Stay Where It Was)

Sparrows, "Teething" (from Let The Silence Stay Where It Was)

Michael Pfohl is the brains behind the Tennessee-based emo band Secret Stuff, as well as a local promoter in Nashville and booking agent for other touring artists. He joined me in the studio (a.k.a. my living room a.k.a. One Sellin' Out Plaza) to discuss the legal nuances of hosting hundreds of punk shows at a place you rent, to encourage owning up to your lofty ambitions, and to convince me to invest in cryptocurrency (which I did and it has stressed me out ever since).

MUSIC FROM THE SHOW:

Secret Stuff, "Maybe You Love Me. Maybe You Floridon't" (from Learning Not to Care)

We talk about the transition from putting your creative efforts toward a band to focusing on a brand.
