<itunes:summary>As a restauranteur with a restaurant brand focused on regenerative agriculture and compassion in food, I think a lot about soil and the structures within that soil that supports and sustains life; that holds water; and carbon; and a nutrient bank that is then taken up into the plants and grasses; that in turn sustains us both directly and through the animals that graze on it. In this way the ideas of reciprocity, of collaboration, of cooperation are at the heart of everything we do. The whole structure is nothing without the sum of its parts and those parts being healthy.
In this vein, I’m really excited and in fact honoured to announce a very special mural we commissioned recently, painted by Ilona Russell, a practicing, London-based artist. A commission that did in fact start as a glorious misunderstanding and ended up being the feature wall in our Nunhead site.
Ilona is an artist with an innate relationship with colour and flow, that nod firmly to landscape and natural form. Her compositions exude an intrinsic femininity. My gut sense is that she is likely one of the upcoming painters of our time. And time will certainly tell.
As an entrepreneur who has dipped in and out for working with designers and creatives; and as someone who loves supporting others to find their feet and their voice, I’ve often wondered around the elusiveness of the creative process and how to be a great client. And how do any kind of creative present themselves in ways that make it really easy to connect with them – whether commercially or otherwise?
Characterised by reciprocity, cooperation and collaboration, the creative evolution and back and forth between client and artist has been incredibly enriching and inspiring.
At the end of the process, what was supposed to be a 10-minute reflective chat is now condensed into 40. It is a verbal record of what it was like working with each other and the key take-aways for others on both sides of the commissioning table. Through it all there emerged one piece of pure gold for both of us and that is offered to you should you care to listen. </itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>The final episode of Season 1 of The Giant Pause Podcast. I talk with Isolate Create Collaborate founders Hannah Eggleston (Artist) and Karthik Poduval (Musician - Flaming Gods) alongside Chris Menist (Musician - Awkward Corners).

Isolate Create Collaborate: An experiment in collaboration to create some magic during lockdown. It’s a group to create stuff together outside the constraints of capitalism/consumerism.

An online community of around 100 members who, each week, have the opportunity to be paired with someone they would never usually work with, in a different discipline to their own. Each collaboration is a one week project.

I talk to Hannah and Karthik about what inspired them to set up Isolate, Create, Collaborate, managing an online community space, and some of the collaborations that have most inspired them.

Chris shares his experiences as a group member and the liberating nature of creating outside your comfort zone.

A creative, collaborative project that would likely never have come into form but for lockdown. In such a raw and emotional landscape in which find ourselves, it's a beautiful picture of the power and importance of creative expression. The collaborations that make it so much more than working solo. And how getting to know someone for their creative expression rather than through pictures of what they ate for dinner is infinitely more nourishing and connecting.</itunes:summary>

Since being furloughed a couple of months ago she has got a recent passion project off the ground - Washed Up Cards. Cards made from plastic she finds whilst beach cleaning on the River Thames. She's hoping they can spread some awareness about plastic pollution in a positive, feel-good way.

We talk about how change doesn’t have to be huge. Little things can make a difference.

<itunes:summary>Has consumer demand for kind to nature food, finally reached a critical mass?

Despite a backdrop of imminent catastrophe, this conversation charts the path Matt Chatfield, Founder of The Cornwall Project, has intuitively taken to reverse from that path to create On the Pass; a unique direct-to-consumer model that’s moved “shopping local” from niche to normal in barely 8 weeks.

From building a successful regenerative restaurant supply chain between London and Cornwall, this flag-flying for climate-beneficial farming has led him full circle back to the very land his family farmed for 400 years. Indeed, Matt’s Cull Yaw – “better than Wagyu” sheep, fattened on a regenerative system, was the first specialist meat On the Pass listed. It flew within 48 hours, demonstrating perhaps there is demand for this kind of produce - but that this kind of demand is also an intelligent one.

Having been so supported by Ian Warren to build his Cull Yaw business, Matt sees the spark of the On the Pass idea as a real means of returning that loyalty. On the Pass takes the specific cuts of native-breed, pastured meat, aged to spec for the likes of Brat and Ikoyi restaurants. Harnessing theirs and his social media networks, all those restaurant orders found new homes directly with their diners instead. An elegant and brilliant solution. From a certain perspective, it could be fair to say it saved one of the UK’s most incredible and unique farming networks - their own - from potential demise.

We talk about how he proved farming can be kind to nature and profitable. How incredibly important it is to create and gatekeep a chain of supply, where each partner understands they are part of and partner in, a system that is greater than them.

This conversation is also of personal significance to me as our regenerative restaurant, 28 Well Hung, was the last restaurant to be brought into the Warren fold. Despite being closed to the public since lockdown, we’ve been able to get several thousand meals containing native-breed, pasture-raised meat to feed our front-line workers through Meals for the NHS. Without the relationship we enjoy with Warren’s and with Matt, this would have been beyond our reach.

As things start to open we ponder what supply chains are going to exist. One thing is certain - with the successful pivots such as surplus waste caterer Elysia Catering (episode 09) and newly formed networks such as Farms to Feed Us – in their words,

“The better we know our farmers and fishers, the more resilient our food system will be.”

If this is your jumping-off point to changing the way you shop and eat, becoming part of the climate solution – enjoy this conversation and get to know farmer (and fisher), Matt Chatfield. He’s gold.

<itunes:summary>Being able to pivot early and take a flexible, iterative approach to growth is something that seems to mark out the kind of entrepreneurs I feel are the most relatable. Because this is life. Life is non-linear generally and thinking fast and flexibly seems to be one of the foundational aspects of resilience. In this episode I have the pleasure of talking courage, curiosity and downright ballsiness with Sophie Andre, Founder of Elysia Catering and her fellow comedian and "get it done" side-kick Rose Wilk-Mullis. This invincible pair will have you believing and knowing that anything is possible on a cargo bike and a prayer. But this is no bootstrap or bust tale. This is how to thrive in a down-market while serving others – and the planet. Waste less. Live more. Enjoy!

Note: this interview was conducted via zoom live from their working railway arch. There is some noise interruption from Network Rail and box packing!

Waking up to find you've raised over £100k is an unusual problem to have. And aside now from how to use the money - what were they solving? After 18-hour shifts trying to save our lives from COVID-19, NHS Hospital Staff are faced with canteens that shut at 5pm.

In this episode we hear from Mo - one of the 70 incredible volunteers for Meals for the NHS that to date has raised £1.6m, delivered 135k meals to 86 hospitals from 182 food providers across 49 areas nationally. Running 28 Well Hung - one of the restaurants involved in supporting this huge effort, this episode is especially poignant.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>What does the story of accidentally ending up as a festival organiser after an impromptu field party have to do with Covid 19 and the lockdown? The Giant Pause was lucky enough to catch with Grace Willow - founder of The Joy in Dance, festival and event producer and workshop leader (Rollright Fayre, Shambala Festival, Secret Cinema) We explore how there is an aspect of the time in which we find ourselves, that is allowing an imperfect, unfiltered yes to life. Creativity is bursting through the cracks of what can look, on so many days, like a heavy blanket of sadness and futility and loss. By telling her own story from how she got rid of "business as usual" and simply started - we talk about why now is the best possible time to start a new business or project and how to stay grounded even while you're choosing to take that leap. </itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Inspiring conversation with Claire Sheppard on surviving cancer, running for MP and setting up the inspiring Nunhead Knocks. True creativity and community in the time of Corona. It took me hours to come down after this conversation - I was so inspired and buzzing with so many other questions.

But here we have a group of entrepreneurs and third sector workers drawn together, to work together for an incredible common goal. Having run a charity before - you just need to look at the website and all the systems and safeguarding in place to see that this is one of the most impressive examples of a volunteer-managing community organisation I've seen. The fact that it was put together so swiftly and so well is testament to Claire and her amazing team. City Hall, local government, other community organisations across the UK - take note. 1700 volunteers - all filtered and correctly assessed. Here's a brilliant system. If you've ever tried to set up or run an effective volunteer programme and need some help or a case study that's worth following - Nunhead Knocks is the one you want to speak to!</itunes:summary>
