It had all started as a race. He had planned to race his sleek, 6.5m sloop, the Napoleon Solo, from England to Spain and then back across the Atlantic.

But on his way to Spain, he was forced to drop out when the hull of his craft developed a small crack. Beaten but not broken, Steve decided to sail solo across the Atlantic anyways.

But then he had to get back home. And that’s what he was doing right now.

In a panic, Steve realized that he was in a much worse situation than a mere crack. Something enormous, perhaps a whale, had crashed into the side of his boat, tearing the hull wide open.

It was February 4, 1982. Two days before Steve’s 30th birthday.

Knowing he had to move quickly, Steve started packing his life raft. It was raw instinct.

As I ran "the toughest race on earth" with my wife beside me, I realized a few things about relationships.

Except it was.

As the surgeon cut around the edge of the tumor with a sharp scalpel to remove it, his hand slipped -- slicing through the nerves in his leg, causing catastrophic damage. He was left wheelchair bound. The agony from his damaged nerves caused him overwhelming waves of pain.

The doctors told him he would never walk again. His psychiatrist told him to accept the worst.

His young days of gymnastics were over.

As far as commitment goes, even I am not as committed as I thought I was.

Sometimes we have these "aha" moments. Mine was when I realized I needed to be more committed.

I was forced to look at my level of commitment versus the level of commitment of some of the greats of our time.

The town was in a valley surrounded by mountains, so I set out with GPS in hand and headed for a nearby peak, running up steep mountain trails. When I reached the top, it was about 7:30, and the sun was just beginning to set. A ball of orange fire at the edge of the horizon. So beautiful.

My father taught me that sometimes the best way to find what’s going on is to talk to the people who are making it happen.

Sure, documents are great, but communicating with your team is the key to finding out what’s really going on.

And over the years, I have found, as a consultant, that the biggest problem in companies is communication. Or lack of.

And it’s the same for a lot of us. When we get stressed about money or business, we shut down. Instead of looking for someone to talk to and brainstorm with, we just close ourselves off to the world emotionally.

That’s where momentum starts.

That’s when he met her. Michael was on the street when he saw a woman having a seizure. She fell to the ground. Convulsing. Busy morning commuters barely stopped to move around her. Most not even looking at her as she lie there barely moaning.

So when we re-framed EDGY to be RADICAL HELP for people who WANT it we were targeting people who have a desire to make progress. People like you.

And we all have one main “thing” we identify with. Even if you wear many hats, you still have one main “thing” that you identify with. What’s yours?

If it’s personal or business, everyone wants quick and tangible results. As time goes by, we are split into two groups. One who pushes toward radical change. And one who makes excuses why doing something radical won’t lead to change.

You’re human. You don’t have to have it all figured out to help others, to be of service to others, to make a difference in someone’s life.

You’ve learned lessons the hard way. You made it through. Now, there is someone sitting where you’ve been. You can help them.

However, after coming home from the Olympics he was so frustrated by being kicked out of a "white only" diner that he threw his gold medal in the Ohio River.  He had beaten the best in the world and was unable to manage being unfairly treated by those around him.

This ability to overcome, despite unfair odds was a skill he would later learn to become a champion.

From the time he was five years, he would spend hours each day with a rod and reel practicing the perfect cast. Fishing was Clay's world. After school. On the weekend. Anytime he could get away, he was in the water trying to catch something.

I stepped off the trail to handle my business, and my running partner took the opportunity to take a little break himself.

As I readjusted my gear, unpacking and repacking the necessary equipment, I noticed a set of headlights not too far away from me.

I thought it was strange that a car was way out here in the middle of the northern mountains of Arkansas -- but it wasn't any of my business.

Kind of strange. Oh well. I had a race to keep running.

When I rejoined my running partner, he asked if I had seen the mountain lion or bobcat that was slinking around in the bushes next to me.

Determined to make a difference, Lasse decided to move more than 4,000 miles away to Thompson Falls in Kenya to begin a brutal training regiment.  Under the 250 foot scenic waterfall at the base of the Ewaso Narok river, Lasse pushed his body  to the breaking point each day.  As the mist of the powerful waterfall crashed down around him, he planned to smash the world record for the 2-mile event at an event in Helsinki in the early summer of 1972.

Experience is first gained through the raw execution of your passion and energy. You putting in the time to execute the ideas and bold vision that you have for yourself.

That’s the beginning of experience.

As you make your way towards where you want to be you will get better through your wins and losses. The more self-aware you are, the faster you will be able to adapt.

Consultative selling is as ridiculously outdated as Alec Baldwin’s advice in Glengarry Glen Ross to “Always Be Closing”.

And what’s wonderfully ironic is that being helpful is never outdated.

But a strategy that water boards your prospect with 37 questions is just a bad strategy.

Frankly, it’s manipulative and selfish. Asking questions is brilliant, but using an interrogation as a trap to close buyers has a short shelf life.

And forget about getting referrals. Buyers aren’t just remorseful; they tend to hold a grudge at this type of poor behavior.

You won’t stick with much of anything that matters for long if you don’t believe that it’s worth it.

It wasn’t for lack of trying. He did everything his coach told him to do. And his coach was one of the best in the world.
A great high jump was the result of great technique.

That started with a few rapidly sprinted steps. Nearing the bar, Dick would push off from the balls of his feet and throw his body sideways over the bar, using his hips to keep from knocking the bar off the pins.

No matter how hard he practiced, Dick continued to be frustrated. The best he could muster was 5’ 4”, a full 2 feet lower than the world record — in a sport measured by fractions of inches.
