Dave has been writing Elixir since the Fall of 2016 where he was an early developer at theoutline.com. At The Outline, Dave helped build a news website and CMS in Elixir and Phoenix. Part of that journey was working with Dockyard and Chris McCord. Using Elixir, The Outline was able to support a few million users a month with just two Heroku dynos, with the second needed only for backup.

Project Management & large changes to core infrastructure

Spend as much time as you can afford up front thinking, taking, and writing about the feature.

At Design Kollective we have a functional spec document template that we use for new features. The documents are broken up into sections: summary (What is this thing in layman's terms?), business requirements (what are the high level goals of this thing?), user stories (practically what does this look like to a user?), implementation details (get into the weeds - on a technical level what needs to happen to make this a reality), additional details (tangential info, questions, notes from conversations).

Break the project into manageable phases or steps.

This will help you divvy up the work into a logical progression and will also help you to provide timeline estimates or even a road-map to your teammates or customers.

Sleep on it.

It's easy to get into a rushed "we have to ship this mode", but most of the time it's better to sleep on touch decisions, or decisions where the immediate effects aren't clear.

Over communicate by leaving bread crumb trails for yourself.

It can be easy to skip over documenting small or important details when you're in a flow state. I always try to leave notes, comments in code, or add extra context to the functional spec document with the assumption that I'll have no idea what I was talking about later. Sometimes at the end of the day I'll even write a summary in notion as to what I was doing, and what I planned on doing next. This has saved me many many times. When working remotely it's important to over communicate, and I try to treat my future self just like another remote employee.

Find what makes you happy and then do that. Stay flexible, don't try to get too solid a plan together because things change, and people change.

We get asked a lot "How do you get into programming?"

A lot of people approach us with this same question. Instead of focusing on tech centric things like "start with html or js", here are our tips that help with sticking to programming, and managing every day issues that arrise.

Be patient, Be patient, Be patient.
Learn how to manage frustration.
Learn when to take a break.
Learn to take feedback, learn to not take everything personally.
Learn to be observant, learn to pay attention to the small details.
Learn to take a step back and look at the big picture.
Maintain a blog or journal of things you're learning. It'll help you with the big picture thing where you can see real progress.
Learn how to break a problem into small chunks. This makes solivng problems much more manageable.

I'd like to know how developers can better provide input into a job spec/set expectations. When a client says "We need x, y and z" is there a way to say "yes, no or maybe" without spending an hour diving into docs or building a prototype. - @kidqueb

Paul: first off, if doing that is part of your job, you should absolutely have the time to spend as much time as needed figuring out actual requirements and deliverables. Too much pressure on people in this way would make me look at company culture problems, not at individual devs.

Make sure that projects are scoped out as much as possible up front - If you have any questions, ask them.
Project postmortems - It's beneficial to take some time after each project to analyze what went well, what what didn't, and why. If you don't have whys, it's harder to get the how's.
Time - It just takes time to gain experience. Soak up everything you can from others around you, and seek knowledge.
Learn how to read documentation efficiently - this will make getting the gist of something much easier.
Search support forums. For example, if you're needing to learn something about Shopify, check out the support forum. You'll find out the real details that the marketing pages don't spill.

What in the world is a Single Page App?

Single-Page Applications (SPAs) are Web apps that load a single HTML page and dynamically update that page as the user interacts with the app. SPAs use AJAX and HTML5 to create fluid and responsive Web apps, without constant page reloads. However, this means much of the work happens on the client side, in JavaScript.

Web Components are a set of standards currently being produced by Google engineers as a W3C specification that allow for the creation of reusable widgets or components in web documents and web applications. The intention behind them is to bring component-based software engineering to the World Wide Web.
