Tina Cordova, the Co-Founder of the Tularosa Basin Downwinders Consortium, is a tireless advocate who has brought attention to the long-ignored consequences of nuclear testing in New Mexico. Her work illuminates the untold experiences of multiple communities who, in the aftermath of the Trinity Bomb detonation and subsequent nuclear tests conducted in New Mexico between 1945 and 1962, were unknowingly exposed to radiation. This exposure, carried by the wind and lingering in the environment for generations, has inflicted devastating deaths and long-term health consequences on countless families. Our podcast for today presents the thrilling story of Hot Foot Teddy, popularly known as Smokey the Bear, who contributed immensely to our forest management practices. This marks the beginning of an enlightening mini-series on the invaluable contributions of Native Americans, Mestizo/Spanish/Latino firefighters, hot shots, and search and rescue teams to the forestry sector.

In 1950, a massive fire broke out, and the Snowball Firefighter Crew from the Taos Pueblo in Northern New Mexico swiftly responded. During their heroic efforts to extinguish the fire, Adolf Samora, the crew leader, stumbled upon a little bear that was stranded in a tree. To their shock and dismay, they noticed that the bear's paws were severely burnt due to the raging fire. They immediately named the bear "Hot Foot Teddy" in honor of this harrowing ordeal and save.

Our Chicano Hero: RIP: Profe. Armando Vasquez Ramos

On August 4th, 2024, we lost a remarkable community leader, Profe. Armando Vasquez Ramos. In his honor, I wanted to recast the podcast we recently recorded. I reconnected with Armando through John A. Taboada’s photo exhibit at the Historical Society Center of Long Beach, which showcased the community work of El Centro de la Raza.
Armando’s podcast interview holds a special place in my heart. I first met him when I was fourteen, when he was the Director of El Centro de la Raza. I worked as a student worker at El Centro from fourteen until I was twenty-one, receiving training and mentorship in youth development and community organizing. I was one of over 400 youth who worked at the Centro every summer, providing us with employment, education, community service, and keeping us out of harm’s way.
Armando and the many other Chicana/o workers at the Centro became my second family, guiding me through college and giving me the skills and community experiences that helped me succeed in my many jobs and careers.

The Dreamer Study Abroad Program: Armando Vasquez-Ramos, President and CEO of the California-Mexico Studies Center

Armando Vazquez-Ramos, an advocate for Chicano/Mexican and Latino education, has been promoting educational opportunities for over 50 years. As a student leader at California State University Long Beach (CSULB) in 1969, he co-founded the Chicano and Latino Studies department. Armando also became the Director of El Centro de la Raza in Long Beach which was a community service agency that provided thousands of families and youth, employment, and community resources. For the last decade Armando has been leading the Dreamer Study Abroad Program which provides Dreamer's the opportunity to study in Mexico and this program allows the Dreamers to return to their country of origin with opportunities to change their undocumented status. Armando provides us his insights to the current political challenges that we are faced with the growing racial divides in our country. Honoring The Patient Voice: Wes Michael, President and Founder of Rare Patient Voice

In 2013, Wes founded Rare Patient Voice to provide patients and their caregivers with the opportunity to voice their opinions through surveys and interviews to improve medical products and services. As with any new business, the initial days were challenging. Wes knew that he wanted to be able to share this resource with all clients, so he purposely did not accept investments from clients or other related sources. He spent time traveling across the country and meeting patients and caregivers at events such as awareness days, fundraising walks, meetings, and conferences. Eventually, the business grew and Wes was able to add staff to support projects and attend events.
Wes has been amazed at the great reception Rare Patient Voice has received from both patients and the market research industry. To date, over $13 million dollars have been awarded to RPV participants. Working to meet the needs of advertising agencies, market research firms, pharmaceutical companies and other clients has been a labor of love for this longtime marketing professional. In addition to the United States, Rare Patient Voice now recruits patients and caregivers for studies in Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Australia, and New Zealand.

Brian Chavez, from the Historical Society of Long Beach, joins us today to share his thoughts and reflections on the new exhibit titled "Centro de la Raza: John A. Taboada’s Photo Legacy 1970-1985." John’s exhibit captures the Chicano Movement in Long Beach and the community work of Centro de la Raza through a beautiful collection of over 3,000 meticulously preserved photos. John's artistry will continue to have an impact on multiple generations to come.
*This exhibit holds immense significance for me. As a teenager, I had the privilege of working at Centro de la Raza, where I was mentored by numerous Chicano students and leaders, including John Taboada.
I want to personally thank all of the Chicanas and Chicanos during this time for their incredible efforts to provide services, art and programs for the Long Beach Community. Their efforts forever changed the trajectory of my life and career.

The Tularosa Basin Downwinders Consortium (TBDC) is a group of activists who seek justice for the victims of the Trinity Test, the first atomic bomb detonation on July 16, 1945. The test exposed thousands of people living in nearby communities, largely Latino communities to harmful radiation, causing cancers and other diseases. The TBDC was founded in 2005 by Tina Cordova and Fred Tyler, along with other residents of Tularosa, to collect data and raise awareness about the health effects of the test.
The Trinity Test was part of a series of 200 atmospheric nuclear tests conducted by the United States between 1945 and 1962. These tests also affected thousands of uranium miners, mostly Native Americans, who provided the raw material for the bombs. The miners and the downwinders were not warned of the dangers of radiation exposure and were not compensated for their suffering.
After decades of lawsuits and advocacy, Congress finally passed a bill in 2023 to amend the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA), which provides compensation to individuals harmed by nuclear testing and uranium mining. The bill, which was signed into law by President Biden on August 8, 2023, expands the eligibility criteria to include the downwinders of New Mexico and the post-1971 uranium miners/workers. The bill also covers more states and territories affected by nuclear testing, such as Montana, Idaho, Colorado, Guam, Nevada, Arizona and Utah.
The passage of the RECA amendments was a historic victory for the TBDC and the Native American communities who fought for their rights and recognition. HealthCare UnTold honors these groups and asks you to donate to: The Tularosa Basin Downwinders Consortium.

Empowering Families to End Homelessness and Poverty: Tracy Weaver, Executive Director, Saranam

Our guest today is Tracy Weaver, Executive Director of Saranam. Since 2004 SARANAM has served over 180 families offering them opportunities to break the cycles of generational poverty. Saranam’s two-year, residential program, and integrated services – housing, education, and community – help families escape from homelessness and poverty permanently with a proven 88% success rate. Many programs addressing homelessness focus on immediate needs such as shelter, food, or addiction treatment. Saranam works holistically, tackling the causes of homelessness and poverty by working with the entire family over time. In 2022 Saranam broke ground for a new campus housing 20 more families and they are about ready to open this new housing in April of 2024!

Our guest today is Tylor Taylor who is the Chief Executive Officer of Successful Aging Solutions & Community Consulting (SASCC). In this episode, we have as our guest Tracy Rodden, the Executive Director of Feed New Mexico Kids. New Mexico Kids is a non-profit dedicated to combating childhood hunger in the state of New Mexico. Tracy shares her inspiring journey and the motivation behind leading this organization.

Over 90,000 children in New Mexico are food insecure and Feed New Mexico Kids has been providing weekly snack packs to over 4,000 kids a month at New Mexico schools. Feed New Mexico Kids also depends on over 200 volunteers from local churches to help pack the snack packs for distribution. Additionally, partnerships and collaboration have been established by Feed New Mexico Kids with local schools, businesses, and other non-profits. These partnerships have been instrumental in expanding the reach of the organization and ensuring that no child in New Mexico goes hungry.

Danielle Parker, Associate Director: United Voices for Newcomer Rights, Albuquerque New Mexico

Our guest today is Danielle Parker, the Associate Director of the community-based, non-profit organization United Voices
for Newcomer Rights (UVNR). UVNR cultivates educational, economic, cultural, social and physical and
mental health resources in partnership with newcomers to empower them to achieve system change
that supports their well-being and integration in their new communities. UVNR uses the inclusive, non-
stigmatized term “newcomers” to include anyone who has migrated to the U.S., including refugees,
immigrants, and asylum seekers, and to build solidary among the groups – recognizing the shared
experiences of migration and resettlement challenges.
Ms. Parker began her career journey when she was an undergraduate student at the University of New
Mexico and participated in the Refugee and Immigrant Well-being Project - a collaborative program run
between UVNR and UNM that trains undergraduate and graduate students as paraprofessional
advocates and then pairs them with newcomer families to engage in 6 months of mutual learning,
mobilization of resources, and advocacy efforts.

Gary Toranzos, Professor of Microbiology at University of Puerto Rico: Research on Fossilized Poop is Revealing the UnTold Histories of the Ancient People of the Carribean

Our podcast today is with Gary Toranzos a microbiologist from the University of Puerto Rico. Gary’s Paleobiology research has uncovered how ancient human poop, known as coprolites, can reveal intriguing insights about ancient diets, migration and trade among ancient people of the Caribbean, South America and Mesoamerica.

Gary and his research colleagues from Puerto Rico, Minnesota, and California discovered something unexpected when examining a 1500-year-old coprolite sample from Vieques, Puerto Rico. The samples contained remnants of monkey meat, tomato, cotton and tobacco. These discoveries raised questions about the trade and dietary habits of the Huecoid and Saladoid cultures, who inhabited Puerto Rico before Columbus's arrival. Through the analysis of the microbiology of caprolites researchers aim to reconstruct the migration and diets of these ancient cultures. Dr. Gilberto Lopez is an Assistant Professor in the School of Transborder Studies at Arizona State University. Gilberto has committed his research to identifying the social determinants and political frameworks needed to understand the health and wellbeing of (im)migrant, rural, and racialized minority populations.

When Covid-19 hit, Gilberto wanted to respond to the differences in information that he was receiving as a public health researcher and the dangerous and life-threatening misinformation that was on social media and news outlets about the virus and vaccines.

Gilberto organized a collaboration with artists, public health leaders, and social scientists to develop open-source resources and materials targeting Latinx and Latino communities. Gilberto reached out to local artists and Lalo Alcarez, the Pulitzer-winning cartoonist known for his political cartoon strip "La Cucaracha" and his collaboration on the movie "CoCo", to help develop educational cartoons and videos. With less than 3% remaining, Hawaiian dry forests are the most threatened ecosystems in the state of Hawaii and worldwide. The Auwahi forest, often regarded as one of the most intact and diverse dry forest areas in the state is one of best example of what our people can do for forest and cultural restoration. Since 1997, the mission of the Auwahii Project has been to restore and preserve tracts of native forests through volunteerism and donations. The Auwahi Project is led by Dr. Art Medeiros, who for over 26 years with thousands of volunteers and the generosity of of the Ulupalakua ranch have literally saved these forests and are now seeing new seedlings that have not been seen in over 100 years.

Dr. Pacheco encourages us to release our grief and sadness, and to connect to our belief systems to help us get through this transition as new medications and vaccines become available to provide more protections from Covid-19. HealthCare UnTold is proud to share with our listening audience the powerful and moving story from JD Medina. JD Medina is the Director of WingsWORKS for Wings For LIFE International. As a native son of New Mexico, JD is proud of the rich culture of his state and his people. Struggles with alcohol and addiction lead him down a path that ended up in incarceration. Now as a returning citizen he is striving to improve his community and the people in it. Upon being released from incarceration JD became a Certified Peer Support Worker and is starting a new job training/peer support program at Wings For LIFE International (WFL).

JD Medina, is the force behind the growing Wings WORKS initiative, a program that will provide training in a variety of skills, including clay product design and production, woodworking, bike repair, jewelry-making and many more options for those needing to enter or re-enter the work world and take that a major step toward success.

Before he joined WFL, JD was operations director for a famed jewelry designer, Paula Crevoshay, managing all aspects of the sourcing and manufacturing of her creative designs. As a registered gemologist with a particular talent for finding solutions to problems that plague in any manufacturing environment, JD is using all of his experience and talent to build Wings WORKS into a force for change, offering those with minimal skills and/or limited resources, the opportunity to learn, build, grow and become either successful entrepreneurs or great employees at established firms.

Aisha Canfield-Allen, MPP, Director: Ceres Policy Research

Aisha Canfield has worked in systems reform for the last decade. She began her career working as a case assistant in death row appeals for indigent prisoners in the state of California, served as a board member for the local chapter of a national organization to increase civic engagement amongst women, and later worked as a paralegal for a private civil rights litigation firm. Since receiving a master’s degree in public policy from Mills College, she has largely focused on juvenile justice reform - partnering with communities and probation departments to prevent system-involvement for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and gender nonconforming (LGB/GNCT) youth of color while improving outcomes for those already system involved. She has conducted national and statewide research on this topic and has published in numerous academic articles. She has trained and provided technical assistance to dozens of juvenile justice systems nationwide to implement SOGIE data collection systems and change culture for youth in secure facilities. Aisha has also served as an evaluator for community-based organizations that provide an alternative to incarceration for youth throughout the United States. Most recently Aisha has been hired to lead the implementation of federal standards that will architect the safety of 18,000 incarcerated adults and 1,000 detained youth in all of Los Angeles County detention facilities.

Good Health News in California: Medi-Cal Enrollment Before Individuals Leave Prison

Hosts Gerardo and Barbara discuss a recent expansion of Medi-Cal enrollment for those leaving prison and the importance of ensuring health and reentry services. Ninety-five percent of those in prisons today eventually will be released so it's important to assist these individuals with job training and health care linkages for a better transition back into our communities. Reentry programs and particularly community health workers have been incredibly effective in helping those transitioning from prison back into our communities.

According to the article by CalMatters this Medi-Cal expansion will provide incarcerated people with a variety of health issues, including chronic conditions, mental illness, substance use disorders, disabilities, or who are pregnant will be eligible to receive assessment and treatment up to 90 days before release. These health care services will help facilitate a smooth reentry process and reduce costly emergency room visits and hospital stays.

Sylvia Bufanda-Courtney: Labor and Civil Rights Activist

Sylvia Bufanda Courtney, a Latina of Mexican and Native American ancestry, was born in Tucson, Arizona, but considers San Francisco her home. It is where she chose to live after leaving Tucson in 1964 in hopes of being able to work for higher wages than were available to her in Tucson and thereby allow her to afford to go to college since there were many choices in San Francisco as compared to only the University of Arizona in Tucson at that time. She was raised by a single mother and the costs to attend the U of A were out of reach, even for a working student. She met and married Vince Courtney soon after arriving in San Francisco and they had two children first, they both finished college at San Francisco State and went on to law school while raising the children and working multiple jobs.

Simultaneously, both Sylvia and Vince became activists beginning in the 60's, organizing against the Vietnam War and for civil rights including farmworkers' union lettuce and grape boycotts and other labor union issues. Upon becoming a full time student, she was instrumental in establishing the SFSU Childcare Center and served as the first Chair of the Parents' Council. She was selected as a delegate from SFSU's Student Mobilization Committee Against the War to attend the Washington D C conference of the National Peace Action Coalition which planned and implemented the largest antiwar demonstrations in the U S in the early 1970's. Before graduating in 1974, summa cum laude, Sylvia taught courses in La Raza and Women's Studies and was awarded a fellowship by Carnegie Endowment for Peace to study and conduct community outreach in San Francisco on issues of racism and its impact on local communities and on international relations.

After graduating from law school, Sylvia worked for the federal antipoverty program, U S Community Services Administration, as Region IX Human Rights Chief. She was hired as a deputy public defender in San Francisco in 1982, and in 1984, entered private practice, specializing in labor and employment law, specifically cases involving wrongful termination, unlawful job discrimination and retaliation. In 1988, she became a partner in the law firm of Davis, Reno & Courtney in San Francisco, representing individuals and union clients including IFPTE Local 21, SEIU, SF Building & Construction Trades Council, Carpenters Local 22, SF Police Officers' Association, SF Firefighters Local 798, Hawaii Government Employees Association (HGEA) and others.

She and her husband established Courtney Law Offices in 1998. Sylvia taught night classes at SF Community College on the subject of employment discrimination for 10 years, and served on the SF Juvenile Justice Commission, and on the boards of various community organizations such as Mission Community Legal Defense (MCLD).

Sylvia and Vince Courtney are now residents of Las Vegas, still spending as much time as possible in the San Francisco Bay Area which will always be home and are proud of Nevada's position as a "blue" state which has made a great deal of progress toward increasing the access of people of color to good paying jobs with career progression in many important sectors, such as the unionized construction and h hospitality industries of Las Vegas. While she has spent many years in the effort to advance the causes of working people and particularly people of color, and laments the divisiveness threatening the nation's progress, Sylvia has hope for the future arising from two phenomena in particular:

1) We have had conflicts and divisions throughout our history and still continue to make progress, however difficult, and

2) Today's youth of the country are more tolerant of racial, ethnic and gender differences, more aware of the threats to their lives of climate change and the proliferation of guns, and more likely to be committed to change because their lives will depend on it.

As a grandmother of two boys and a girl in their late twenties, who are proud of their Irish and Mexican heritage, Sylvia believes that it is just as important, and perhaps more important, to pass on knowledge, perspective and commitment to members of one's own family as to anyone else, inasmuch as the youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow.

Darnell Lamont Walker, Emmy-Nominated Writer and His Journey as a Death Doula

Darnell Lamont Walker is an American writer, director, and producer who has directed and produced social impact documentaries including Seeking Asylum, Outside the House, and Set Yourself on Fire. He has also written for the children's television shows Karma's World, Face's Music Party, and Blue's Clues & You. Darnell was part of the Karma's World writing team that received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Writing for an Animated Program at the 1st Children's and Family Emmy Awards.

One of Darnell's passions outside of writing is serving as a death doula. From a young age he provided comfort and support to many loved ones and friends and he believes that the gift of being a doula chose him. A large part of his mission in being a Black death doula is to ensure that those in his care do not walk blindly into grief and tragedy or into their final moments alone. His commitment and compassion for his community shines brightly and we at HealthCare Untold honor Darnell Lamont Walker for his beautiful work as a writer and as a Black death doula.

Matt has over 22 years of experience in affordable housing and community development. He has developed hundreds of affordable homes including rental and for sale in the Sacramento, San Francisco Bay and Monterey Bay Areas. Dr. Chanda Nicole Holsey - a Health Education, Maternal, Child Health Specialist and Founder of HALO for Families.

Dr. Chanda Nicole Holsey is a Health Education and Maternal and Child Health specialist. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology where she graduated with honors at San Diego State University. She also received a Master of Public Health in Behavioral Science and Health Education from the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University in Atlanta, GA, and a Doctor of Public Health in Maternal and Child Health from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Additionally, Dr. Holsey is a certified asthma educator (AE-C).

She has a passion for influencing children and families, especially the underserved and indigent. She has worked with young children for much of her professional career in health education and promotion, and public health services. At present, she is a consultant for both the African American Wellness Project and the National Medical Association. In these roles she serves as a health disparities programs developer, where she writes grants, develops, and oversees the implementation of programs that focus on chronic disease prevention and health promotion in communities of color; she does this meaningful work under the umbrella of the public health company she founded, HALO for Families, LLC.

She is also an adjunct professor for Nova Southeastern University, Dr. Pallavi Patel College of Health Care Sciences, where she teaches an array of health care course, e.g., Community Capacity Building, Current Issues in Health Care, Topics in Maternal and Child Health, Health Care Delivery Systems, and Ethics of Health Care.

Dr. Holsey refers to herself as a “virtual work from home mommy”, as currently she and her family resides in Sasebo, Japan. Her husband is active-duty military with sea orders on mainland Japan.

Dr. Holsey is the wife of enlisted sailor, Eric Demond, and the mother of two beautiful daughters—Savannah Nicole, age 14, and Erin Morgan, age nine. Tweety, a spunky two – year old Jack Russell Terrier mix was adopted into the family in 2020.

Local Organizations are trusted by members of the most vulnerable communities because they are the daily providers of comprehensive services like food, mental health, housing, and financial assistance. Albino Garcia Jr., Executive Director of La Plazita Institute, Albquerque, New Mexico

Albino Garcia Jr. is the Founder of La Plazita Institute, a grass-roots community organization in Albuquerque, NM that engages young people and their families in a comprehensive, holistic approach to youth and community development. A major focus of La Plazita is to help prevent recidivism amongst formerly incarcerated youth and adults.

Garcia was born in Illinois and grew up near Chicago. As a young man, he struggled to relate to the cultural values and approaches of public school and other institutions, but today he draws on a wealth of street knowledge and experience to effectively work with youth. In 1979, at the age of 17, he served in the United States Military as an alternative to incarceration. He served seven years, including in Korea, and received recognition for his service.

In 1994, Garcia founded the New School of Watsonville, CA designed to give youth a second chance for education in an alternative setting more conductive to their needs. He has served as an educator, trainer, and community liaison for the Community Engagement Center at the University of New Mexico, and as a Deputy Director of Training at Youth Development Inc. in New Mexico. He also has several years of experience as the lead program coordinator at Barrios Unidos in Santa Cruz, CA, where he initiated school-based, community-based, and institution programming.

In 1995, he was one of 50 people chosen for the prestigious Kellogg Fellowship which awarded him $130,000 over three years to make a difference in addressing major social issues in the United States and beyond. As a Fellow, Garcia had the opportunity to travel extensively, meeting with noted thinkers and leaders including President Jimmy Carter, the Rigoberta Menchu Foundation in Guatemala City, Samuel Ruiz, the Dalai Lama, Parker Palmer, and others. He visited and participated in forums around civic engagement, leadership, and global issues in Brazil, Turkey, Greece, Peru, Guatemala, Belize, South Africa, Mexico, and cities across the United States.

Apache and Chichimeca in origin, Garcia is recognized as an outstanding leader and spiritual activist in Albuquerque, NM and was recently honored by the Rosebud Tribe. He speaks English and Spanish fluently and has conversational knowledge of Korean. He has been married for twenty-two years to his wife Frances, is the father of three children, Ursula, Albino Jr., and Sylvia, and has two grandchildren, Mariah and Adriana. HealthCare UnTold recognizes Albino Garcia Jr. for all of his many inspiring contributions focused on creating peace and solidarity.

Yarida Estrada is a community leader and organizer who has committed her life to social justice. She volunteers with numerous New Mexico and national organizations from getting out the vote by knocking on doors to working on state and national legislation.

Yarida is part of the leadership team at La Plazita Institute in New Mexico whose mission is to provide a comprehensive, holistic and cultural approach designed around the philosophy of “La Cultura Cura” to engage with youth, elders and communities around various social issues. Luis Granados, CEO of the Mission Economic Development Agency in San Francisco and Board Chair of UnidosUS, the largest civil rights organization for Latinos in the US, has been working diligently for over 20 years in response to gentrification in the San Francisco Mission District. He believes that the agency is helping to curb the tide of gentrification by becoming both a Community Development Financial Institution as well as a Housing Developer, and has grown his agency from serving hundreds to housing thousands by responding to the changing needs of the local community. This report highlights the power of the Latino dollar and the total economic output (or GDP) of Latinos in the United States. The Latino GDP was $2.8 trillion in 2020, up from $2.1 trillion in 2015, and $1.7 trillion in 2010. According to this report, the Latino GDP would be the fifth largest GDP in the world, larger even than the GDPs of the United Kingdom, India or France.

The fact that members of the Latino community are younger and have not hit their top earnings means that our GDP will continue to grow and further support the US economy. Gerardo and Barbara emphasize the importance of investing in the Latino community's health and education to ensure that the US economy remains vibrant and booming!

Juan Antonio Cuellar - Frontera Collection Curator at Arhoolie Foundation

Juan Antonio Cuéllar has been responsible for digitizing the most extensive collection of Mexican and Mexican American recordings in the world known as The Strachwitz Frontera Collection. Since February 2002, Cuéllar has personally digitized, listened to, and archived over 130k songs, which are currently available through the UCLA Digital Library. Born in Los Caños, Aguascalientes, he immigrated with his family to Northern California to start a new life. He was raised in Santa Cruz and eventually moved to San Francisco to attend the California Culinary Academy where he worked the hotel circuit in and around San Francisco until he took another creative outlet, and that was playing trombone for San Francisco-based bilingual Punk band, La Plebe. Cuellar is in the finishing stages of digitizing the collection and will start on the next phase which is to disseminate the knowledge he has acquired over the last 20 years of digitizing and is transitioning into a new position as the Frontera Collection Curator at the Arhoolie Foundation. This past September marked the first of what will be many exhibitions curated by Cuellar called "Rumo A California." The exhibit looks at California record labels and how they documented and promoted Mexican music in the state over the last 100 years.

CIELO responded during the COVID-19 crisis by recognizing that many indigenous families were not receiving the necessary education and support; the organization provided over 2.3 million dollars of funding and vaccinated over 15,000 indigenous community members. Our guest today is Dr. Daniel M. Fernandez, a Professor and Researcher from California State University Monterey Bay. Dr. Fernandez's recent research involves collecting and studying water from fog; he has deployed and maintains, with help from student assistants, a network of nearly 50 standard fog collecting devices from central to northern California. This network first began in 2005 and has been growing and developing since that date. It is currently the largest network of research fog collectors in the world of which we are aware.

Dr. Daniel M. Fernandez received all of his degrees in Electrical Engineering, with his BSEE from Purdue University in 1987, his MSEE from Stanford in 1988 and his Ph. D. from Stanford in 1993. He has been a professor at CSUMB for 26 years.

Arturo came out of the closet as a student at UCLA, and quickly became a Gay leader working for the largest Gay/Lesbian Organization in Los Angeles. His activism within the Gay/Lesbian movement included persuading white activists to recognize people of color. This was a great challenge and he was not easily accepted by the primarily white leadership. Then came the AIDS Epidemic which changed his life. His partner was diagnosed early in the epidemic and he had no other choice but to join the many who fought and organized for men of color to be cared for and accepted by both the Gay/Lesbian and Latino communities.

Arturo represents a generation of activists in our community who committed their lives to saving the lives of others. We at HealthCare UnTold recognize him as one of our many heroes as we honor his story of leadership, advocacy, and courage.

BAYADA, Heroes on the Home Front: Fighting Against Federal Cuts to Home Health Care Services

Today's guest is David Totaro, Chief Government Affairs Officer for BAYADA, a nonprofit home health care provider with 360 offices in 23 states and several international locations. BAYADA is leading the charge to advocate against recent notifications that The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Service (CMS) has proposed an alarming $1.33 billion dollar budget cut for home healthcare services in 2023. Medicare is also forecasting additional cuts of more than $2 billion in 2024 and beyond. In addition to impacting aging Baby Boomers, these cuts will greatly affect our nation’s disabled population, including medically fragile children, NICU babies, and others.

In July, Senators Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) and Susan Collins (R-ME), together with Representatives Terri Sewell (D-AL 7th District) and Vern Buchanan (R-FL 16th District), introduced the Preserving Access to Home Health Act of 2022 (S. 4605/H.R. 8581) to prevent the proposed cuts to home health from taking effect prior to 2026. BAYADA'S goal is to increase awareness of this issue so that the most vulnerable Americans can continue to access this life-saving care.

Our guest today is Olga Talamante Olga’s family migrated from Mexico to Gilroy, California in the early 1960’s where they worked in the farm fields for several years. She is widely respected for her long-standing community activism and leadership. During the mid-seventies, she became well known for her experience as a political prisoner in Argentina. As a result of a successful grass-roots campaign, she was released after spending 16 months in an Argentine prison. After returning to the United States, she has remained active in the Chicana/o, Latin American solidarity, LGBTQ and progressive political movements. She serves on several boards and currently co-chairs the Caravan for the Children, which advocates for the release, reunification and healing of the children separated at the southern border.

In Honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we are re-broadcasting Laura Segura's interview from August 12, 2021.

Laura Segura serves as Co-Executive Director of Monarch Services (formerly Defensa de Mujeres) in Santa Cruz County, domestic violence, rape crisis, and human trafficking center. She has deep roots in the Pajaro Valley and has dedicated her career to issues of social justice and equity. She is a two-time Fellow with the Women’s Policy Institute and has helped pass legislation to protect survivors of violence.

Laura was born in La Angostura, Michoacán, Mexico, and as a child moved to Watsonville with her parents and 5 siblings. She attended Cabrillo College and then graduated from San José State as a first-generation student. She later attended Harvard’s Executive Education program. During her career, she has worked for local government and the non-profit sector and has served on numerous boards and commissions.

Laura is a recent breast cancer survivor, has two daughters, and lives in south Santa Cruz County near her big Mexican family. During the pandemic, Laura honed in on her amateur culinary skills and regularly trains as a cyclist on her road bike.

Keisha is an experienced nonprofit executive with a career spanning over 20 years in community development, education, youth success, and philanthropy throughout the United States. Due to the protections necessary because of Covid-19, this year he has curated a drive by procession at San Francisco's Davies Symphony Hall where very large lithographs representing the Aztec stages of death will be exhibited for the public to enjoy.

Juan Pablo discusses the importance of protecting our culture, language, and rituals as a way of maintaining our communal spiritual health. Since the Procession's inception, he has not sought or accepted corporate sponsorships because of his firm conviction to refrain from "selling our dead."

HealthCare UnTold continues its series highlighting members of the COVIDLATINO project. Today's guest is Tanya Jeanette Alderete.

Tanya, currently a medical student at the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara School of Medicine, is completing her third-year medical rotations in Phoenix, Arizona where she was born and raised.

During the height of the COVID pandemic, Ms. Alderete conducted research at the St. Vincent de Paul Virginia G. Piper Medical & Dental (SVdP) Clinic, a free clinic in downtown Phoenix that historically has treated a population that is predominantly undocumented immigrants. The SVdP clinic partnered with CVS and the National Association of Free Clinics to provide free rapid COVID tests to underserved individuals.

Tanya joined the social media team of the COVID Latino Project with the goal of helping debunk COVID myths among the Latinx community and to disseminate accurate information regarding the COVID virus and the COVID vaccines. Ms. Alderete led the relaunch campaign of the COVID Latino Project to ensure that all the content created was shared in an effective manner.

HealthCare UnTold again recognizes the COVIDLATINO project and its volunteers like Tanya who have made such a difference to the Latino Community during the Covid-19 pandemic by providing accurate information regarding the virus and vaccines.

Joanne Sanchez was the Watsonville Community reporter at the Santa Cruz Sentinel before moving on to focus her energy in the non-profit sector. She was the Public Relations manager at CASA of Santa Cruz County, serves on the Board of the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History, and is a founding member of the Watsonville Campesino Appreciation Caravan. Joanne was instrumental in the creation of the Digital NEST.

Ruby Vasquez is the daughter of loving parents who worked the fields, safeguarded traditions, served others, and emphasized the importance of education and familia. These values have shaped who she is and how she serves her community.

After earning a BA in American studies with an emphasis on Chicano studies and a bilingual teaching credential from UC-Santa Cruz, Ruby started working at Pajaro Valley Unified School District (PVUSD) in 1987 and eearned a master’s in educational leadership at Mills College in Oakland.

Ruby began dancing Mexican folk dance at the age of 6. Dance made her more aware of her cultural heritage and helped her develop a strong sense of pride and self confidence. She joined Esperanza del Valle (EDV), a Watsonville adult Mexican folk dance group in 1987 and now serve as assistant director. EDV promotes pride and an understanding of Mexican culture through traditional dance forms rooted in the merging of indigenous, European, and African heritages.

In 2006 she founded Estrellas de Esperanza, a 40+ member dance group for students ranging in the ages of 5 to 18. Estrellas is committed to projecting a positive image of Mexican culture and ensuring that local students learn about their heritage.

Ruby's involvement goes beyond the arts. As a parent education trainer for PVUSD, she works with colleagues to engage parents in their children’s schooling. More recently, she helped to form the Watsonville Campesino Appreciation Caravan, dedicated to agricultural campesinos (fieldworkers). At the onset of the pandemic, they were left out of the “essential workers” narrative. What began as a caravan of cars driving past local agricultural worksites with messages of gratitude in Spanish and Mixteco Bajo has transformed into Adopt a Cuadrilla, where the group distributes personal protective equipment and household supplies. This work and everything else that she does is offered with respect to our local community.

Many of us are getting sick with flu like symptoms. The symptoms of Omicron that makes it different it from the flu are: **The loss of smell and taste, which you will not find with the flu. **High fever and sometimes severe headaches, which is being reporting by those infected with Omicron. If you do have those symptoms, it’s much more concerning that you may have gotten COVID than the flu. Because Covid testing is now taking more days to get your results, it’s important to take better care of yourself for your family and your community If you can’t find n95 or kn95 mask wear two masks even if you are vaccinated. Wear a disposable mask and a cloth mask. This virus is staying longer in the air and can get through a single cloth mask. It’s also really important get your Covid 19 vaccines. The data shows that those without vaccines are the vast majority in our hospitals. Our Elders are also at high risk for hospitalizations, so wear your masks for the elders around us. If you are NOT vaccinated, then double mask to protect yourself and others around you. Arnoldo Torres is a journalist, a public policy expert and the executive director for the California Hispanic Health Care Association. Arnold played a significant role in the debate surrounding the Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA) of 1986, which addressed civil rights protections, temporary workers and immigration legalization.

Good News Latinos and X at HealthCare UnTold would like to recognize the work of the State of New Mexico to support the goal of a living wage for farmworkers. Due to the farmworker labor shortage caused by Covid-19 in New Mexico, Governor Lujan announced a 5-million-dollar fund to form the Chile Labor Incentive Program (CLIP). The CLIP program is a wage supplement program for the chile industry to ensure the production of the state's signature crop. On November 17, 2021 Governor Lujan announced the extension of the CLIP program through the end of January 2022 to cover the New Mexico red chile pepper harvest. There's lots of winners due to this wage enhancement: farmworkers, farmers and those of us who love New Mexico chile!

On today's Covid-19 Update, we discuss the impact of vaccines on the highly infectious Delta Variant. Vaccines have been effective in reducing deaths, hospitalizations, and severe illness. Over 750,000 deaths in the United States, including the loss of parents to thousands of children, have caused a tremendous amount of suffering that is not being recognized. We are also not certain about the long-term effects of Covid-19 for those who have suffered through this infection; brain fog, fatigue and shortness of breath have been identified as some of the lingering effects. At this point of the pandemic, the virus looks like it will be with us as an ongoing viral infection.

Vaccines and/or masking for those who are not vaccinated will continue to be important as we enter into the Winter season. This Winter and Holiday season will have people coming indoors from the weather, and these gatherings again will have the potential of spreading both the flu and Covid-19. Getting your Flu shot this year will be very important since our immunity is low due to our home isolations.

Take action for yourself and make sure to encourage those around you to get the flu shot and Covid-19 Vaccines and Boosters. Each of us can make a difference to continue to smash this virus.

The UnTold Stories and Lessons Learned from the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake

Since the inception of the HealthCare Untold Podcast, I wanted to record an episode about Latinos' own version of the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake. When the earthquake hit, I was the Executive Director of Salud Para La Gente, a farmworker clinic in Watsonville, and what I experienced and witnessed first-hand during this ordeal was life changing. These same feelings were sparked during the Covid-19 Pandemic as our podcast captured the voices and work of Latinos and others who stepped up and organized to provide the support and services to those in need in LatinX communities around the country.

It's been 32 years since the 1989 Loma Prieta staff and volunteers of Salud Para La Gente served over 10,000 people with medical and mental health services as well as with clothing, food and monetary support. This type of timely and life-saving support is exactly what our community organizations are doing around the country today, support all made possible by committed staff, funders, donors, and volunteers.

This podcast episodes includes testimonials of those involved in response to the earthquake and a discussion with Dr. Sandra Hernandez, CEO of the California Healthcare Foundation, about the traditional phases of disaster management: preparedness, response and recovery. The lessons learned from today's responses to the California Fires and Covid-19 Pandemic are the same: the importance of serving our most vulnerable communities with dignity and respect.

As Mayor Oscar Rios shares the multiple improvements of Latinx civic leadership since the earthquake 32 years ago in Watsonville, I can't help but wonder about the future for our communities post Covid-19. My experiences have shown over and again that when people come together to solve a crisis, we can permanently make the world a better place. This has become my central thesis and philosophy for public health as you will hear reflected in our podcast, HealthCare UnTold.

Raquel Mariscal: Transforming Social Systems that serve Children towards Justice and Well-Being

Raquel Mariscal is from a farmworker family and at the age of five she was working in the cotton fields with her parents. Even at this early age, she knew that it wasn't right for children to be working in the fields. Rooted in this history, Raquel committed her career to social justice movements in health, criminal justice reform and youth justice.

Raquel completed law school, became a public defender and has served on numerous national policy boards. Today, Raquel works as a member for the Justice and Well-Being team with the W. Haywood Burns Institute; in this capacity she works to transform the administration of justice and provision of human services across the country by helping to restructure these systems towards well-being.

Raquel's story is a powerful example of our community leaders and their profound commitment to our children's well-being by transforming institutional racism in agencies that serve children.

Born and raised in Watsonville, I bring more than 30 years of nonprofit experience to my work as the executive director of the Community Action Board (CAB) of Santa Cruz County, Inc. (CAB). I stand on the values of equity, humility, and service to lead the agency to expand services, strengthen community engagement, become culturally reflective, and experience significant fiscal growth.

As a public speaker on local, statewide and national platforms, I strive to amplify the voices of immigrants, Latinx families, and those impacted by poverty. Grounded in my mother’s dichos (teachings), I advocate for services that cultivate a sense of belonging. El dicho, “Cada quien pone su granito de arena” (every person contributes their little grain of sand), has fueled me to build networks and teams that focus on cultural respect and make a difference in the lives of others. Among the organizations where I have held leadership or board roles are Janus of Santa Cruz, Mexican American Community Services Agency, CALCapa Community Action Association, Conflict Resolution Center, Workforce Investment Board, Mercantile Mexicana, Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds, Moreland Notre Dame, and Barrios Unidos.

I hold a dual BA degree in psychology and Chicano studies from Scripps College in Claremont, California, with extensive leadership development including the Bank of America National Leadership program, United Way Leadership for Community Transformation, and the Stanford University Graduate School of Business School’s Nonprofit Management Institute, and the Gilroy Leadership Program. Marcia Rincon-Gallardo has dedicated her lifetime career to social justice, and is presently the Executive Director of the Alianza for Youth Justice. The Alianza for Youth Justice is dedicated to supporting and mentoring Latinx youth to help transform our youth justice systems with long term solutions.

Marcia works directly with Latinx youth providing mentoring, policy, and data training. Working side by side with the youth in her program she has advocated and improved the data gap to improve racial and ethnic data collection. Many data systems in our detention systems do not reflect the Latinx population in youth detention. As an example, even though 70% of young women in detention centers in Santa Clara County were Latinx the aggregated data did not reflect Latinx numbers. The disaggregation of ethnic and racial data for Latinx communities is imperative to ensure that services and programs in detention centers are reflective of and effective for our youth.

Jasmine Najera will be exploring the importance of leadership, particularly in her hometown of Watsonville, California, a predominately Latin/X community. She will be highlighting Watsonville's incredible responses to Covid-19, and the support that leaders need to ensure their success via community support and on-going self-care.

Gerado Sandoval will bring his artistic media experience from his work in Radio and Musical productions with a new show called Latino Problems, Latino Solutions.

Our founding Host, Barbara Ann Garcia, will continue her podcasts on health leaders and will lead a new news segment with both Gerado and Jasmine called GoodNews Latinos and X, bringing GoodNews to our listening audiences.

Dr. Camilo Werlin, M.D., M.P.H., Medical Officer, Zuni Comprehensive Community Health Center

Dr. Werlin is a Medical Officer for the Indian Health Services, which is responsible for direct medical and public health services to members of federally-recognized Native American Tribes and Alaskan Native People. Dr. Camillo Werlin is a physician specializing in Family and Community Medicine working as a rural family doctor on the Zuni reservation in New Mexico.

Dr. Werlin shares his experiences as a rural physician with the incredible staff and services provided by the Zuni Comprehensive Community Center. The clinic is staffed by many members of the reservation who are recognized community leaders. Living on the reservation provides Dr. Werlin a better understanding of the needs of his patients. He has been given opportunities to work in multiple clinical areas of the clinic service system.

Dr. Werlin recognizes the work and collaboration of the Zuni Tribal Government and the federal government during the Covid-19 response. As members of the reservation became ill and died from Covid-19, the clinic, tribal government, federal government, and community health clinics quickly responded with care, outreach, and eventually vaccines.

Dr. Werlin is a great example of our need to have more federally supported rural health centers and primary care physicians through out our tribal communities. HealthCare UnTold salutes the Zuni Comprehensive Community Center and Dr. Camillo Werlin for their dedicated and critically-needed service.

Dr. Magdalena Avila, Public Health Expert and Activist-Scholar

Dr. Magdalena Avila's farmworker parents wanted a better life and education for her and her siblings. Dr. Avila's parents dreams came true; all of their children were college-educated and held long careers in public service.

At the University of New Mexico, Dr. Avila taught her students to work with communities of color and to develop sustainable strategies for effective long term health interventions. She based this work on her expertise in Community Health and Community Based Participatory Research. She describes this type of research as "from the people for the people." Dr. Avila and her students visited communities and Pueblos throughout the state of New Mexico to listen to the communities stories and asses their health needs. This research helped inform Health Impact Assessments (HIA's), which were then utilized by multiple policy groups in the state of New Mexico.

Dr. Magdalena Avila's commitment to the health and wellness of people of color communities and her mentoring and teaching of public health leaders make her one of our HealthCare UnTold Heroes.

Covid-19 Update #11 with Dr. Sandra R. Hernandez, CEO of the California Health Foundation

Vaccines have shown to be incredibly effective, and continue to be available for anyone 12 years of age and older. With only half of California and the United States fully vaccinated, we need to continue to reassess how to reach the unvaccinated. Most recently, there have been efforts to increase outreach and to go door-to-door to provide vaccines. Our media efforts will also have to target specific populations with effective messages.

We continue to encourage you to get vaccinated, and if you are not vaccinated, we ask you to continue to mask up with N95 masks around others in large crowds and indoors events.

Tom Perez: An inspirational Veteran, High Tech Diversity Advocate and Blind Tandem Stoker

Tom is a Veteran who received multiple blunt force traumas to his eyes during his boxing career at West Point. He never realized the impact of these traumatic brain injuries until many years later as his vision grew worse. He continued to pursue his career in the early tech industry and developed multiple diversity support systems and recruitment processes to bring more people of color into the field of technology. Tom's continuing vision loss has gotten worse and eventually after 30 years he was diagnosed with blindness, but with the help of the Western Blind Rehabilitation at the Veterans Administration he challenged his disability and embraced his love for cycling to become a competitive blind tandem stoker.

The center encouraged him to continue his love of cycling by becoming a tandem stoker. Today he is a competitive tandem stoker and is riding in October for the Million Dollar Challenge with the Challenged Athlete Foundation.org to raise millions of dollars for the Challenged Athletes.

Jacob Martinez recognized that Latino communities were locked out of the economic opportunities and digital innovations that were shaping the globe just across the Santa Cruz Mountains in Silicon Valley. He wanted to give Latino youth from rural communities opportunities to tap and develop their talents, perspectives, and passions to build their own thriving technology centers, and to prepare them for the technology workforce.

Since Digital NEST's inception in 2014, Digital NEST has opened two technology centers in Watsonville and Salinas, California. Over 2,000 youth have been empowered by this organization to develop essential work skills via job internships, school placements and employment opportunities in technology.

The economic opportunities for these youth is enormous and can change the trajectory of their lives, their families, and the communities in which they live. Jacob's passionate commitment to youth and their future in technology is awe-inspiring! We are proud to recognize him as one of HealthCare UnTold's Heroes.

Shipra Narruhn: Spiritual Teacher and Reiki Master.

Shipra Narruhn is a Spiritual teacher, Reiki Master, and healer. Her earliest training was deeply rooted in the influence of her father, Dr. Haridas Charudhuri. He and her mother, Mrs. Bina Charudhuri, founded the first Ashram in San Francisco, the Cultural Integration Fellowship. Later they founded a Graduate School in San Francisco, California Institute of Integral Studies. This early exposure to Spiritual teachers and Spiritual teachings provided Shipra with the foundation for her practices and healing abilities.

Shipra is a Master practitioner of Reiki. Reiki is based on the principle of channeling energy to the patient by means of touch, which activates natural healing processes that restore physical and emotional well-being. Shipra has committed her life to service, and volunteers her healing abilities to those suffering from chronic diseases and terminal illnesses by providing comfort and companionship. Her commitment to healing has touched thousands of individuals.

Sandy has served on various commissions, and was the first Asian American Woman to chair a City Commission--the Commission on the Status of Women.

Sandy has shown a lifelong commitment to promoting racial and social justice, women's rights, and food security. Seniors have been greatly impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic and organizations like Senior Pharm Assist have expanded their services to continue to reach out to their participants to ensure that they had a life line during the shutdowns.

Access to food, promoting self care, and digital services were some of the expanded services provided. Loneliness is a health risk for many seniors and Senior PharmAssist continued their reassurance calls to help their clients during this challenging time.

As an advocacy organization, Senior PharmAssist joined community coalitions to support and advocate for vulnerable communities in the Durham North Carolina community. Senior PharmAssist was particularly concerned with the Digital Divide impacting vaccination access since so many seniors cannot afford or have no internet access. Director Upchurch shares informaion about a new federal program funded by the FCC--the Emergency Broadband Benefit Program--which will provide discounts for internet and devices.

Alva emphasizes the importance of self-care to be an effective community activist. Activists work many hours under stressful conditions and need to be mindful of their own physical and mental health needs.

During the HIV/AIDS epidemic, Alva was called upon to expand services to meet the growing needs of Spanish-speaking Gay Latino men, as well as men who were having sex with men and women who were infected and affected. She assisted and educated families about HIV/AIDS and LGBT communities, and helped them cope with stigma, fear and death.

Alva shares her thoughts on how to ensure equity and justice during the Covid-19 Pandemic including using existing Nonprofit networks throughout Latino communities as well as radio and social media to improve education and communication to the diverse Latino communities.

Alva continues her work as a consultant as owner of AAM Social Services Consulting.

Decent and affordable housing greatly contributes to the overall positive health status of individuals and communities. The spread of Covid-19 through high-density and unhealthy housing continues to highlight the great need for decent and affordable housing.

Habitat for Humanity in the Greater Albuquerque region continues to build new housing for low income families. The organization has also developed a Home Preservation and Repair Program that alleviates safety issues and restores appearances of home exteriors. The organization receives no Federal assistance and has developed an innovative revenue source through their "restore" program which sells donated items from the community. Loving Thunder: A Therapeutic Horse Riding Program in Rio Rancho, New Mexico.

Loving Thunder was developed as a nonprofit to provide therapeutic horse riding services to children and adults. Individuals learn to groom, feed and ride the therapeutic horses and begin to gain confidence in themselves and their ability to manage a large 1,000 pound horse.

Therapeutic Horse Riding contributes to increased self esteem and self acceptance as well as improved social skills; it also reduces anxiety, depression and isolation. The interaction between the horses and the participants can often unlock buried emotions, allowing them to be processed and healed.

Gerado received a vaccine as a volunteer for the Moderna Clinical Vaccine Trial. This trial was a blind study, so he did not know whether he got the "real" vaccine or a placebo. Gerado's family wanted to help move the vaccine approval forward because they wanted to protect their son's future as well as to ensure that there was representation from the Latino and Latinx communities. His hope is that he can encourage the Latino and Latinx communities to get protected by taking the vaccine when it is available.

Nkazi and her husband began by helping another African with his health needs and soon recognized that many immigrants and asylum seekers had similar needs; they decided to support them in their transition to the United States.

Nkazi is the co-founder of the Immigrant and Refugee Resource Village of Albuquerque (IRRVA).

IRRVA provides provides job and educational skills development, most recently in collaboration with the Southwest Organizing Project. African and Afghan women and girls, together with many volunteers, sewed over 18,000 masks for the general population in Albuquerque.

Diane and Roma have committed their lives to improving health and justice for our communities.

In the first part of this two part series, Diane Jones shares a research project with the University of California San Francisco after Physicians identified that the majority of the transmissions of Covid-19 was within the Latino/Latinx communities. Diane reached out to and worked closely with the Latino/ Latinx leadership in San Francisco to involve them in the research project to identify who was being infected and how best to respond. Diane was pivotal in this research because she was able to build bridges with Latino/Latinx communities.

Roma Guy discusses her work fighting a new proposed jail that would cost the city millions of dollars. She talks about the community organizing that was done to block this jail and to focus on the needs of those incarcerated including bail reform, health care, mental health, and substance abuse treatment.
