Romancing The Screen

A podcast hosted by two experienced intimacy coordinators — Katherine O’Keefe (she/her), and Annie Spong (she/her). Join them in their warm and inclusive conversations as they delve into the intricate world of their craft, and how it interacts with the production process. They'll also share insightful stories from their experiences on (and off!) set working as ICs.

In each episode, they attempt to unravel the standards, culture, and complexities surrounding intimacy and nudity in the entertainment industry, offering their three unique perspectives. As pioneers in a surprisingly new profession, Katherine and Annie aim to demystify the role of intimacy coordinators – addressing the need for ICs and why intimacy coordination is a crucial part of filmmaking. Tune in for enlightening chats from three friends who navigate through nuanced topics with grace and levity.

Discussing Intimacy Coordinator Headlines: Actors on Choosing ICs... or Not

In this episode of Romancing the Screen, Annie and Katherine dive into a few recent high-profile conversations about intimacy coordinators and what it means when actors choose to use ICs, or opt out entirely.

Using Jennifer Lawrence’s appearance on Las Culturistas, Variety's Actors on Actors with Pamela Anderson and Mikey Madison, and Florence Pugh’s discussion on Louis Theroux’s podcast, we unpack how actors are publicly framing their experiences with Intimacy Coordinators. From trust and preparation to autonomy, vulnerability, and creative control, these interviews seemed to have sparked renewed debate around what intimacy coordination looks like in practice.

Lucy Shapiro & Taylor Smith Giresi, Co-Founders of Covvier

Annie and Katherine talk with Taylor Smith Giresi and Lucy Taylor, co-founders of Covvier, some of the best modesty garment makers in the entertainment industry. Covvier products are some of the staples of Katherine and Annie's IC kit, and are trusted by productions at FX, Showtime, Netflix, and Hulu. We talk about the creative process for making and designing modesty garments, what brought Lucy and Taylor to found Covvier, and of course, the evolving role of wardrobe in modern filmmaking.

Taylor Smith Giresi is the co-founder of Covvier. She’s worked as a PA, set costumer and wardrobe supervisor since moving to NYC in 2010. She’s worked on an array of shows and was recently nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Contemporary Costumes for Mare of Easttown. Taylor grew up in a costume family, both of her parents worked as costumers on Broadway, and then later in film. The lightbulb moment came after having worked on numerous intimacy scenes throughout her career, and realizing there was no training or modesty garments that were specific for these scenes. She appreciates having been in the industry long enough to know what it was like before intimacy coordinators, and is energized to dedicating more time to helping create new industry standards surrounding intimate scenes. In addition to running a business, Taylor now has 2 small kids.

Lucy Shapiro is the co-founder of Covvier, a protective modesty garment company making exciting advances in the industry’s ability to keep actors safe and their dignity protected. She is also a set costumer on Emmy winning tv shows (including Pose, which won for best contemporary costumes in 2021), is an Emmy voting member of the Television Academy for over 10 years , and is a skilled crafter who enjoys working on many of her own personal projects. She grew up in LA with a father who worked as a studio executive, a mother who is a painter, and an older sister - who now works in the world of birth, trying every day to improve the conditions and experiences for birthing people and their families. Lucy has lived in NYC for almost 20 yrs, working in the costume and wardrobe department in film and tv for 15 of them. Starting Covvier, with partner Taylor Smith Giresi, has been the most fulfilling part of her career. After noticing holes in the industry, regarding intimate scenes -they knew they had to help make a change.

You can find more of Lucy and Taylor, and Covvier on Instagram at @covvier_garments, and their website www.Covvier.com. You can find us on Instagram at @RomancingTheScreenPod, and you can email us questions at RomancingTheScreen@gmail.com.

Filmmakers Amy & Richard Janes - Episode 9

Our first pair of guests are Producers, Directors, and accomplished Filmmakers Richard & and Amy Janes!

Annie and Katherine talk to Amy and Richard about how their filmmaking process has changed over the years with the advent of Intimacy Coordinators. The conversation touches on topics like Richard dealing with an inappropriate costume designer as a young man, Amy navigating intimacy with actors before IC's, and how Intimacy Coordinators can help with triggering and emotional scenes, even when the crew themselves are affected.

Richard and Amy Janes are a dynamic husband-and-wife duo making waves in Oklahoma's rapidly growing film and television industry. Amy, an Emmy and Clio-winning producer/editor, is celebrated for her work on documentaries and feature films, including projects like "As Seen Through These Eyes" narrated by Dr. Maya Angelou, as well as HBO's "Crossfire Hurricane" and "Valentine Road." She runs the Oklahoma Film and Television Academy/Film Crew Institute, co-owns Filmmakers Ranch in Oklahoma, and serves as Executive Producer at Fanology in LA, crafting engaging digital content. Richard, an accomplished director, boasts over 100 commercials for major brands and an Emmy for "Behind The Lyrics." He was cast in a variety of different roles as a young actor in the UK before transitioning into directing - leading him to Los Angeles where he met Amy. They quickly realized they both shared a vision of a self-sustaining filmmaking community. Together, they revitalized an abandoned school in Oklahoma City into Green Pastures Studio, a thriving film campus. Committed to diversity, they also launched the Film Crew Institute, a below-the-line training school that seeks to redress the diversity imbalance of our crew base so that it can more accurately reflect the global audiences of the industry.

You can find Amy, Richard, and all of their projects on their two websites, FilmmakersRanch.com and FilmCrewInstitute.com.
When Do You Know You Need an Intimacy Coordinator on Set? - Episode 3

When exactly is an intimacy coordinator brought on in the production process? When should they be brought onto a project? During casting? The day before filming? The day of?

This week, Annie, Katherine, and Rachel discuss the answers to these questions and share experiences when they probably should have been brought onto set a little bit earlier than they actually were. As always, the conversation leads us back to the question "What is intimacy?"

In this episode, we discuss gender and body parts. In the entertainment industry, many of the legal departments still use very binary language - male or female being their only two options - in their definition of body parts when deciding what qualifies as nudity. Hence in the podcast when we reference “male chests” our meaning is male in the legal sense as used by entertainment law.

We at Romancing the Screen do not want to perpetuate the harmful myth that gender is binary or attributed to a singular factor. Gender is multifaceted. Biological sex, gender expression, and gender identity do not have to align in any way. People know who they are. Hear what they say.
