The 2025-26 NBA regular season is more than 90% over, with the Boston Celtics having just six games left to play. But after that of course comes the 2026 NBA Playoffs, and the Celtics are poised to make some serious noise in the Eastern Conference postseason scrum thanks to an MVP-caliber campaign from star Boston forward Jaylen Brown, big steps forward from several rotation players, and a surprisingly capable incoming cohort of rookies, new Celtics, and a healed Jayson Tatum.

This then begs the question of which East ball club Boston will likely face in the first round of the 'offs -- and more to the point which teams we most (and least) want the Celtics to face in the first round. With three likely opponents and another trio of less likely ones pending who comes out of the play-in tournament (and where Boston finishes in the standings), the hosts of "Havlicek Stole the Pod" took some time on this episode to talk through the field of potential opponents for the Celtics, along with which we feel would be the biggest (and least) challenge for Boston.

The 2026 NBA trade deadline has passed and the dust has started to settle on the many moves made by the Boston Celtics and the rest of the league ahead of the annual cutoff on moving players between teams. This week, the Celtics dealt Anfernee Simons for Nikola Vucevic, and then moved Chris Boucher, Xavier Tillman Sr., and Josh Minott with only two way player John Tonje coming back. Did we mention that Boston got below the luxury tax without using a first round pick to get there from what would have been the costliest roster in the history of the league?

While easing the pinch on Bill Chisholm's pockets may not get the attention of most Boston fans, the fact that these moves put the Celtics in position to go all-in on spending once they are out of the luxury tax repeater status the season after next ought to register some interest. And now the questions of why the Celtics made the moves they did at the deadline starts to come into focus. The Boston Celtics have traded former Portland Trail Blazers guard Anfernee Simons for Chicago Bulls big man Nikola Vucevic, and the move has landed with mixed reactions from fans and analysts alike. On one hand, Boston was able to minimize the risk of losing Simons in free agency for nothing as an unrestricted free agent this summer while also creating a traded player exception (TPE) they can use down the road to add a long-term solution at the 5.

Did we mention they also got a center who can play a style more amenable to a certain injured star forward than anything the Celtics had to work on their roster right now? We are of course referring to Jayson Tatum, who could benefit from a pick-and-pop center like Vucevic. But with the trade, Boston also loses an electric, capable young scorer some hoped might stick with the team for the long haul.

The Boston Celtics have a tough decision to make ahead of the 2026 NBA trade deadline when it comes to whether they will retain the services of Anfernee Simons. The Celtics dealt for the former Portland Trail Blazers guard this offseason when they moved on from vet guard Jrue Holiday due to cap and perhaps age concerns.

The assumption at that time was that Simons was likely to be a short-timer with the Celtics given his large, expiring contract and seemingly ill fit with Boston to start the 2025-26 NBA regular season. But since then, the Longwood, Florida native has found his niche off the bench with the Celtics, even helping the team to win a few games. How to decide whether Boston should keep him or trade him? To that end, the hosts of "Havlicek Stole the Pod" linked up with "Third Apron" founder and cap guru Yossi Gozlan to host a mock trial on which way the Celtics could go with Simons at the deadline.

Are there any realistic big man trade targets out there for the Boston Celtics ahead of the 2026 NBA trade deadline? The Celtics find themselves a ball club of note tied to a number of trade candidates just weeks before the last day in the league calendar teams can swap players. Some of them are sexy names with dubious availability and other concerns, like Jaren Jackson Jr., and Ivica Zubac of the Memphis Grizzlies and Los Angeles Clippers, respectively.

Others are perhaps more likely to be dealt but not quite the impact players Zubac and Jackson are, like Dallas Mavericks big man Daniel Gafford, or former Celtics (and current Portland Trail Blazers) center Robert Williams III. Still more might be bargain options with upside like Brooklyn Nets big DayRon Sharpe, and there's plenty of names we aren't hearing that might be reasonably dealt for.

The NBA is roughly midway through the 2025-26 NBA season, and with that passage comes some clarity on what teams really are compared to what we thought they were heading into their current campaigns, particularly the Boston Celtics. Plenty of preseason and early-season narratives have become clearly incorrect, Others have emerged to take their place, but have yet to be proven -- and some will need the rest of the regular season and then some to test.

We know the Celtics aren't tanking, ethically or otherwise, that Joe Mazzulla can coach developing players, and expect to see Jayson Tatum return from injury at some point in the regular season. And the question is no longer whether Jaylen Brown can lead a team, but how far, and with what individual accolades. But do the Celtics (and more specifically Brown) really get such a bad whistle? The last time the Boston Celtics and Detroit Pistons crossed paths, the Celtics were seen as a team leaning into development for the season and the Pistons an interesting ball club projected to end up somewhere in the middle of a weaker Eastern Conference milieu. Then the two teams played, and Detroit center Jalen Duren had what then seemed like an outlier game with 24 points and 18 rebounds in a 119-113 Pistons victory Boston might have won had it been able to keep up on the boards.

But as we near the end of the month of November and the two Eastern Conference clubs get ready to square off again, it's become clear both teams are better than many expected, and the Pistons especially so. Duren appears to have taken a major leap forward that compliments Cade Cunningham expertly, and while not on Detroit's level, Boston has shown they aren't trying to lose and might even make the actual playoffs come April.

These are the sort of moments that famed NBA writer and cultural historian Shea Serrano evokes in his new tome "Expensive Basketball," out as of late October at anywhere books are sold (Serrano prefers you grab it at an independent store if you can), and as alluded to above, it is not without a significant Celtics presence. We have a basic idea of what this version of the Celtics will play like after letting Jrue Holiday, Kristaps Porzingis, Al Horford, and Luke Kornet go, but little clarity about how that will play out on the court.

From the near-certain departure of vet forward Al Horford in free agency to potentially trading one or both of Anfernee Simons and Georges Niang to reduce the Celtics' cap hit, there is still a fair amount of work to be done before training camp rolls around in the fall. There are expectations that Boston will trade players to get cheaper, and the injury to Tatum AND Brown added to the mix have some suggesting splitting them up might be a good idea. Even if the team's front office has no such plans, Boston will be a different team without Tatum -- and perhaps without Brown for a good chunk of the season. Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens just sat down with the media for the first time since Boston was defeated by the New York Knicks in their 2025 NBA Eastern Conference Semifinals second round series that saw Jayson Tatum go down in Game 4 with a torn Achilles, Jaylen Brown playing on a partially torn meniscus, Kristaps Porzingis reduced to a shell of himself due to illness among other issues plaguing the roster.

What does the future hold for the Celtics in light of their looming historic payroll and tax bill, in light of all the above? Which players are likely on the move, and who will still be in green and white when the dust settles? Could a major rebuild be about to unfold in Boston?

We're striving to provide something you won't find elsewhere, so expect a slightly more erratic schedule of pod releases while we search for the stories and guests worth more than a five-minute segment.
For our soft launch, we decided to discuss TWO such deep dives (we'll usually have some brief current news before wherever we decide to go for the focus of each pod), feeling we needed to take stock of all of this summer's moves and how they could pan out next season, as well as a bigger-picture look at player movement and other pressing issues related to the league as a whole. The Boston Celtics are finally flirting with playing like the team most of us expected at the start of the season, with something resembling chemistry producing a much better version of the team on the court. They have struggled significantly as they have sought to cement a consistent identity as much as they have a consistent approach to games, but recent off-court activity on the now-complete west coast road trip have gone a long way with calming those concerns.
At the same time, longtime rivals Los Angeles Lakers are facing potential disaster, as LeBron James' arrival has failed to produce measurable improvement, and has had a negative impact on team chemistry in the wake of failed Anthony Davis trade machinations, while one of their brightest prospects faces a life-threatening malady. Even when missing multiple key players due to minor injuries and illness, they have still found ways to keep winning, owning the league's longest win streak. They even made history against the Chicago Bulls, breaking several league and franchise records in that 56-point victory. With training camp looming just over the horizon, most of us would like to be turning our attention to the goings-on of the Boston Celtics with renewed fervor given the lofty expectations for this year's squad.
Leave it to life to make that a fraught proposition, however, with news of Jabari Bird's arrest on domestic violence charges, putting the Boston Celtics (and the NBA) into unchartered territory, as the latter has introduced a new, redesigned domestic violence protocol with little precedent to work with, but good science behind it.
Three former members of the Boston Celtics are now new members of the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame, the candidacy of at least one stirring up those debates of who belongs in what halls of fame and why, and there's been a predictable uptick in Celtics-related news as camp draws closer. With three weeks to go before players even arrive at camp, there's not a lot of basketball news to cover.
By now, most of us have read up on Jackie McMullen's excellent series on mental health in the NBA (and if you haven't, you should), and we're pretty sure Terry Rozier won't be in a Phoenix Suns uniform any time soon. There's Hall of Fame inductions involving former Boston Celtics on both sides of the ceremonies, and a little smidgen of other news around the league we break down in this summer edition of the CL Pod, which is running every-other week in the offseason, at least until things start to heat up, anyway.
But, since the news is not enough for a full-length podcast, we decided to pit the cities of the projected top four teams (the Golden State Warriors, Houston Rockets Toronto Raptors and of course the Celts) plus some classic (Los Angeles Lakers) and arguably forced (Philadelphia 76ers, Washington Wizards and Denver Nuggets) rivalries in an 8-team one-and-done tourney on which city has the best...music!

Two months out from the start of the regular season, and nearly half as long from camp, more than a few of us are starting to get antsy without basketball to watch.
With that in mind, we decided it was time to dust off the microphones and record an episode of the CLPod to talk about the (very few) moves of note going down since the last time we recorded two weeks ago.
And with the team in a liminal space between seasons, neither last season's Celtics nor the next, Mark Allison and Justin Quinn got to thinking about all the different ways this timeline of Boston's journey from one contending squad to the next could have gone differently.
So, we put our heads together, and tried to imagine how the Cs might look if Danny Ainge had kept the last title team together longer, or if Brad Stevens had said no, or if Boston hadn't signed Al Horford, or...well, you'll have to listen to hear them all.
So, if you're as ready as we are for some real, live NBA games that count, you're going to have to wait a while. But if you want some news and analysis on not just this timeline, but several others we don't happen to be on, buckle up and listen to this week's CLPod - we have at least another month of doldrums ahead of us, and a lot to be thankful for, if our thought experiments are as realistic as we think they are.

The summer free agency period has mostly cooled off, leaving a few loose ends around the league.
For the Boston Celtics, that would be Marcus Smart's still-unresolved free agency, while for other teams, like Boston's storied rivals, the Los Angeles Lakers, well - let's just say they still have a lot of work to do.
After scoring what many thought was the early coup of summer free agency in signing LeBron James, the Lake Show has not had much go their way, perhaps badly enough to force the team to reconsider championship aspirations until February, if not later.
For those of us hoping to crush James in our least favorite uniform, well, we might have to put that thought on hold for a bit - but maybe not! We decided to balance the scales with how we evaluated the Celtics offseason to date (as well as the state of the Celtics-Lakers rivalry) with friend of the show, former NBA scout and Lakers fan Alton LaBrecque, so get yourself some earphones, a speaker, or your laptop, and join Justin Quinn in this week's podcast.

The Boston Celtics are limping into the 2017-18 NBA Playoffs down four of their best players, and have matched up with one of the league's most dangerous players in the first round.

Playing Giannis Antetokoumpo and the Milwaukee Bucks early means the Celtics have their work cut out for them, and if they don't come hard early, they may not even have a chance of Marcus Smart coming back late in the first round to help. But this Bucks squad is far from invulnerable, so long as Boston plays the series well. The rest of the field is looking pretty beatable, from the one seed to the eighth, so we may see more upsets in both the Eastern and Western Conferences than we have in a long time. Danny Ainge went and did it. He traded the first-overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft less than a week before the big day. The news began to leak out Friday night that this deal with the Philadelphia 76ers was in the works, and it only took another day for the two teams to come to an agreement. We took a day to stew on the shocking revelation, and let it out last night on the podcast.

Topher Lane and Mark Allison dive into their thoughtson the deal, what it means for the Boston Celtics immediate and long-term plans, and what the hell is going to happen Thursday night. They also get into the news that Paul George has told the Indiana Pacers he's out after next season, essentially forcing them to trade him for whatever they can get. Does it make sense for the Cs to take a shot at a possible one-year rental? They certainly have the assets; could the facilitate a deal to the Cleveland Cavaliers if it nets a solid return? I'm not sure I want to help the Cavs get any better.

We even talked to Josh Horford, brother of Celtics' big man Al, about the chaos, and he let Josh Coyne know who he'd like to see in green this summer, and how he feels about Ainge's wheeling and dealing. We'll have loads of coverage in the lead-up to the draft, but this is one episode you do NOT want to miss.
