LOGLINE: Carol is a 2015 romantic period drama film directed by Todd Haynes. The screenplay by Phyllis Nagy is based on the 1952 romance novel The Price of Salt by Patricia Highsmith (republished as Carol in 1990). The film stars Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Sarah Paulson, Jake Lacy, and Kyle Chandler. Set in New York City during the early 1950s, Carol tells the story of a forbidden affair between an aspiring female photographer and an older woman going through a difficult divorce.

For our final Holiday Diva Movie of the season, everything comes full circle. This week, Angie and Steffi discuss “Carol” (2015, directed by Todd Haynes), starring our divas of the week: Cate Blanchett & Rooney Mara.

Because there is so much to talk about when it comes to the masterpiece that is “Carol”, we have decided to divide our discussion into two parts. In part one, we review the movie via various scene discussions. We then end the episode sharing what we think Cate Blanchett & Rooney Mara’s Oscar Clips should be and giving our Letterboxd rating.

During our review, we ask the classic Carol question: Did Carol leave the gloves on purpose? We also discuss if Carol clocked Therese immediately, repression vs. not knowing one’s sexuality, the film’s mise en scène, the emotionally stirring score, and the genius of Todd Haynes’ cinema. In this episode, Angie and Steffi discuss the holiday sequel to 1999’s “The Best Man”. It’s time to get into “The Best Man Holiday” (2013) starring our divas of the week: Nia Long, Sanaa Lathan, Regina Hall, and Melissa De Sousa.

For this episode, we combined what would normally be two parts of an episode into one episode because that’s what we used to do when covering movies. However, this will probably change in future episodes. But the first part of this episode is reviewing the movie via various scene discussions, while the second part of this episode is us talking about “The Best Holiday” era in Nia Long, Sanaa Lathan, Regina Hall, and Melissa De Sousa’s careers respectively.

During our review, we debate whether these people are actually friends, the ways in which the characters grew and DID NOT grow from the first movie to the sequel, the memorable “Can You Stand the Rain?” scene, and how successful the sequel is.

Then, during our era breakdown, we talk about how the careers of Nia Long, Sanaa Lathan, Regina Hall, and Melissa De Sousa’s; discussing their onscreen personas and all of their amazing work in Black Cinema. We also talk about how the film was marketed and why it was the most profitable Black Holiday film in 2013. Plus, two rounds of IMDB’s “Best Four Known For”!

LOGLINE: The Best Man Holiday is a 2013 American comedy-drama film written, co-produced and directed by Malcolm D. Lee. A sequel to Lee's The Best Man (1999), it stars Morris Chestnut, Taye Diggs, Regina Hall, Terrence Howard, Sanaa Lathan, Nia Long, Harold Perrineau, Monica Calhoun and Melissa De Sousa, all reprising their roles from the previous film. Along with Lee, the film was produced by Sean Daniel.

In this episode, Angie and Steffi are continuing on their holiday diva movie journey with the modern day Christmas romcom classic “The Holiday” (2006) featuring our divas of the week: Kate Winslet & Cameron Diaz.

For this episode, we combined what would normally be two parts of an episode into one episode because that’s what we used to do when covering movies. However, this will probably change in future episodes. But the first part of this episode is reviewing the movie via various scene discussions, while the second part of this episode is us talking about “The Holiday” era in Kate Winslet & Cameron Diaz’s careers respectively.

During our review, we discuss meet cutes, the Santa Ana winds, why Arthur is the best character, Angie’s love for Miles/ Jack Black, Steffi’s love for Graham/ Jude Law and our shared love for that iconic 3 way phone call scene.

Then, during our era breakdown, we talk about how “The Holiday” plays up to or against Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet’s on screen personas, respectively. We also discuss Nancy Meyers’ career at this time and how despite the film having underwhelming success, it became a modern day holiday classic over time.

LOGLINE: The Holiday is a 2006 American romantic comedy film written, produced and directed by Nancy Meyers. Coproduced by Bruce A. Block, it was filmed in both California and England and stars Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz as Iris and Amanda, two lovelorn women from opposite sides of the Atlantic Ocean, who arrange a home exchange to escape heartbreak during the Christmas and holiday season. Jude Law and Jack Black were cast as the film's leading men Graham and Miles, with Eli Wallach, Shannyn Sossamon, Edward Burns, and Rufus Sewell playing key supporting roles.

A Diva's Christmas Carol (2000): VANESSA WILLIAMS

In this episode, Angie and Steffi are going back to the movies in honor of the holiday season. To kick off our Diva Holiday Movies month, we are discussing the VH1 TV movie classic “A Diva’s Christmas Carol (2000) starring our diva of the week: Vanessa Williams. We review the movie and also talk about the “A Diva’s Christmas Carol” era in Vanessa Williams’ career.

For this episode, we combined what would normally be two parts of an episode into one episode because that’s what we used to do when covering movies. However, this will probably change in future episodes. But the first part of this episode is reviewing the movie via various scene discussions, while the second part of this episode is us talking about this project in relation to Vanessa Williams’ career.

During our review, we discuss all the funny moments including Ebony’s lack of concert during a literal earthquake. We then stan faux fictional girl group Desire and their bops! Plus, a discussion on the meta-ness quality of this Vh1 classic and our fictional diva bracket.

Then, during our era breakdown, we talk about Vanessa Williams’ onscreen persona as the “diva bitch” and the projects that helped cultivate this persona. We also discuss the lack of music programming today and how that came to be. Also, we play a fun game called “IMDB’s Best Four Known For” that we will be doing in all of our movie episodes. ‘Tis the season!

LOGLINE: A Diva's Christmas Carol is a 2000 VH1-original Christmas television film starring Vanessa L. Williams, Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas, Brian McNamara and Kathy Griffin. The film is based on Charles Dickens' classic, A Christmas Carol (1843), and features an ego-driven popular singer who gets a reality check by three Christmas spirits. The film premiered on December 13, 2000.

Album Info: The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is the only solo studio album by American singer and rapper Lauryn Hill. It was released on August 25, 1998, by Ruffhouse Records and Columbia Records. Its lyrics touch upon Hill's pregnancy and the turmoil within her former group the Fugees, along with themes of love and God. The album's title was inspired by the film and autobiographical novel The Education of Sonny Carson, and Carter G. Woodson's The Mis-Education of the Negro.

Album Info: Ray of Light is the seventh studio album by American singer-songwriter Madonna, released in early 1998 by Maverick Records. A major stylistic and aesthetical departure from her previous work, Bedtime Stories, Ray of Light is an electronica and techno-pop record which incorporates multiple genres, including ambient, trip hop, art pop, psychedelic music and Middle Eastern music, while also seeing Madonna singing with greater breadth and a fuller tone. Mystical themes are also strongly present in both the music and lyrics, as a result of Madonna embracing Kabbalah, her study of Hinduism and Buddhism, and her daily practice of Ashtanga yoga.

Album Info: The Velvet Rope is the sixth studio album by American singer Janet Jackson. The album was released on October 7, 1997, through Virgin Records. Prior to its release, she renegotiated her contract with Virgin for US$80 million, the largest recording contract in history at that time. Upon experiencing an emotional breakdown, Jackson began facing a long-term case of depression. She in turn developed her new record as a concept album, using introspection as its theme. Its title is a metaphor for emotional boundaries, as well as an allusion to an individual's need to feel special. Its lyrics address subject matter such as depression, self-worth, social networking, and domestic violence. It also encompasses themes of sexuality, including BDSM, sexual orientation and same-sex relationships. Due to its sexually explicit content, the album reinforced Jackson's public image as a sex symbol and as one of the most erotic vocalists of the 1990s. Its incorporation of social issues regarding sexual orientation and combating homophobia also established her reputation as a gay icon and received the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Music.

Album Info: Butterfly is the sixth studio album by American singer-songwriter Mariah Carey, released on September 16, 1997, by Columbia Records. The album contains both hip hop and urban adult contemporary sounds, as well as some softer and more contemporary melodies. Throughout the project, Carey worked with Walter Afanasieff, with whom she had written and produced most of the material from her previous albums. She also worked with many famed hip hop producers and rappers, such as Sean "Puffy" Combs, Q-Tip, Missy Elliott and the Trackmasters. With the latter acts producing most of the album, Butterfly deviated from the adult contemporary sound of Carey's previous albums.

Welcome to our Anniversary Divas Series! 2022 marks the 25th anniversary and several career cementing and music defining projects for our divas. Picture it: the year is 1998. And within several weeks of one another, Mariah Carey’s “Butterfly”, Janet Jackson’s “The Velvet Rope”, Whitney Houston & Brandy’s “Cinderella” and the Spice Girls’ “Spiceworld” were all released into the world and pop culture was never quite the same again. Oh, and a little album called “Thriller” by an up and coming artist named Michael Jackson is also celebrating its 40th anniversary year, as well. Album Info: Ungodly Hour is the second studio album by American R&B duo Chloe x Halle. It was released through Parkwood Entertainment and Columbia Records on June 12, 2020. Originally scheduled for June 5, the album's release was delayed as a gesture of solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement and the global protests following the murder of George Floyd. The album was supported by the singles "Do It", "Catch Up", and "Forgive Me", the former of which became their most successful song to date. A reissue of the album entitled the "Chrome Edition" was released on February 26, 2021.

Welcome back to PART 2 of our SWV “It’s About Time” journey. In this episode, Angie and Steffi break down the era!

For this episode, we discuss SWV’s faulty contract and (yet again) how one particular member was more or less pushed as the lead of the group which caused major tension within SWV. It earned 11 Billboard Music Award nominations and became the 16th best-selling album of 1993 in the United States, with 2,100,000 copies sold according to Nielsen SoundScan. We’re going back to the 90s and talking about one of Angie’s favorite girl groups of all time, the Sisters With Voices: SWV.

In this episode of Diva Dailies, Angie and Steffi review SWV’s debut album entitled, “It’s About Time” (1992). But before we talk about the album, we read listener feedback (which, THANK YOU FOR THAT) and briefly talk about our anticipation (or lack thereof) for Beyoncé’s imminent Renaissance.

Album Info: PCD is the debut studio album by American girl group The Pussycat Dolls, released on September 12, 2005, by A&M Records. In 1993, the Pussycat Dolls was created as a burlesque troupe by choreographer Robin Antin. After attracting media attention, Antin struck a joint venture with Interscope Records to develop the Pussycat Dolls into a brand, with Jimmy Iovine assigning the project to Ron Fair. As one of the executive producers Fair produced the majority of the album and collaborated with producers like Kwamé, Polow da Don and Rich Harrison. The music style of PCD was described as pop/R&B and urban dance-pop. Lyrically the album incorporates sexual innuendo and explores the themes of feminism and romance. It features guest vocals from rappers Busta Rhymes, Timbaland and will.i.am.

Album Info: CrazySexyCool is the second studio album by American girl group TLC. It was released on November 15, 1994, by LaFace and Arista Records. The album saw the group reunite with producers Dallas Austin, Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds and Jermaine Dupri as well as new collaborators Organized Noize and Chucky Thompson, and also featured contributions from Sean "Puffy" Combs who helped with the notable hip hop soul sound. CrazySexyCool featured hip hop beats, funk, deep grooves, propulsive rhythms and smooth production. The album's lyrical content was seen as a departure from the group's debut and was seen as a coming-of-age project which explored themes such as sexuality, romanticism, inexperience, and youthful optimism.

In our first official “Diva Discography” episode, Steffi is joined by Diego to discuss a member of his “Legends Only Club”, Miss Ariana Grande’s, sophomore Christmas EP entitled, “Christmas and Chill” (2015). Not only do we share our Top 3 Favorite songs & our least favorite song from “Christmas and Chill”, we also discuss Ariana’s “Christmas Kisses” (2013) EP and get into a very heated debate over a particular song. As an Ariana stan, Diego also gives us some #Ariantor tea concerning her Christmas and Chill merch & also shares his experience of seeing Ariana perform her holiday songs live on tour.

EP INFO: Christmas & Chill is the second extended play (EP) and second Christmas EP by American singer Ariana Grande. It was released on December 18, 2015 by Republic Records as a follow-up to her 2013 Christmas EP Christmas Kisses and her 2014 Christmas single "Santa Tell Me". The EP features six original Christmas tracks composed and produced mainly by Grande and co-writers, most of which have an R&B sound. Grande has continuously called it her "favorite body of work".

On a very special throwback episode of Diva Dailies, Lisa and Steffi discuss “My Best Friend’s Wedding” (1997) and wonder who really is Jules’ (Julia Roberts) best friend. SERIES LOGLINE: The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is an American sitcom television series created by Quincy Jones, Andy and Susan Borowitz, that originally aired on NBC from September 10, 1990 to May 20, 1996. The series stars Will Smith as a fictionalized version of himself, a street-smart teenager from West Philadelphia who is sent to move in with his wealthy uncle and aunt in their Bel Air mansion after getting into a fight in his hometown. However, his lifestyle often clashes with the lifestyle of his upper-class relatives. It ran for 148 episodes over six seasons.

EPISODE LOGLINE: A streetwise teenager is sent by his mother to live with wealthy relatives in an upper-class California neighborhood, where he must adjust to a new lifestyle. After getting reacquainted with the family, it leads to a formal dinner.
