Marya Zarif is a Syrian-born author, illustrator, screenwriter, and director with a passion for animated storytelling. In 2020, she created and co-directed the youth web series Dounia, which led to her award-winning debut feature "Dounia and the Princess of Aleppo." The film premiered at Annecy and has since received international acclaim. Zarif is also the author-illustrator of two Dounia books and is currently developing new films set for release in 2025 and 2027.

In 2023, his Arabic translation of Lamia Ziadé’s graphic novel "Bye Bye Babylone" was published by Mauzoun.

Christine Gedeon is a visual artist born in Aleppo and raised in the U.S. She divides her time between Berlin and New York. Since the start of the war in Syria, her work has focused on her family history in Syria, pre-civil war, in various mediums including video, sound installations, and works on paper and canvas. Gedeon’s work has appeared in galleries and institutions worldwide. She has received grants and fellowships from the Berlin Cultural Senate, The Harpo Foundation, the Bronx Museum, and A.I.R. Gallery, New York. Her book, "Aleppo: Deconstruction | Reconstruction" was published in 2020, by Kerber Verlag in Germany.

In 2023, his Arabic translation of Lamia Ziadé’s graphic novel "Bye Bye Babylone" was published by Mauzoun.

It aims to promote hands-on education and civic actions through the making of temporary urban furniture, art installations and public events with local inhabitants. With members of its community moving around, the project established itself in Tottenham in north London in 2018, and in Lisbon since 2020. Omar Thawabeh is a Beirut-based translator, writer and the co-host of afikra's Outline podcast. His translations and essays were published in Bidayat, The Public Source, Oasis, among other platforms and magazines. In 2023, his Arabic translation of Lamia Ziadé’s graphic novel "Bye Bye Babylone" was published by Mauzoun.

Haya Khairat is an Egyptian director, cinematographer and photographer. She was the first Egyptian to win the Angénieux Special Encouragement Award at the Cannes Film Festival. Haya worked as first assistant cameraman for “Afrah al-Qobba”, “La Tatfi al-Shams” and “Al-Rehla”. She was also the director of photography for “Dark Chocolate” which won “Best Short Film” at the Cairo Film Festival in 2019.

We also explore the meaning of the evil eye and misunderstanding/seeking to understand our grandparents as people. 

Nour Hage is an award winning British-Lebanese designer and artist, based between London and Dubai. She works across textile and digital and her practice is centred on the exploration of West Asian identities, culture, history and storytelling, with a particular focus on women, the supernatural and mental wellbeing.

She was the inaugural Jameel Fellow at the V&A Museum in 2021 - 2022. Her solo exhibition Kheit at Leighton House is open until 16th July.

He discusses the influence of the Ottomans on the way certain words are pronounced, notably in Lebanese Arabic. The words include fruits and vegetables, such as artichoke, orange, loquat & more.

Fadi Bou Karam is a photographer based in Beirut, Lebanon. He was born and raised in Beirut, and growing up in a war-torn country, photos held a special significance for him as they were often the only remnant of people who no longer existed.

It wasn't until he reached his thirties that Bou Karam realized how much he needed photography, both as a therapeutic tool and a way to discover oddities within the mundane. In 2013, he and a group of photographers from around the world started the Observe Collective, which was founded on a shared fascination with watching and documenting the diverse humanity that surrounds us.

She uses watercolor, gouache, and walnut ink to create pieces that tell stories.

Mary Ann Peters is an artist whose combined studio work, installations, public art projects and arts activism have made noted contributions to the Northwest and nationally for over 30 years. Most recently her work has focused on the overlap of contemporary events with splintered histories in the Middle East. Her awards include the 2015 Stranger Genius Award in Visual Art, a 2013 Art Matters Foundation research grant, the MacDowell Colony Pollock Krasner Fellowship (2011), the Civita Institute Fellowship (2004) and the Behnke Foundation Neddy Award in Painting (2000). She is a founder of COCA (Center on Contemporary Art), a recipient of the Artist Trust Leadership and Arts Award, and former board member and board president of NCFE (National Campaign for Freedom of Expression).

Wafa Ghnaim is a Palestinian researcher, author and educator who began learning embroidery from her mother, award-winning artist Feryal Abbasi-Ghnaim, when she was two years old. Her first book, “Tatreez & Tea: Embroidery and Storytelling in the Palestinian Diaspora” (2018), documents the traditional patterns passed to her by her mother. Wafa has since become a leading educator in the field as the first-ever Palestinian embroidery instructor at the Smithsonian Museum, Collections Specialist for the Museum of the Palestinian People in Washington, D.C., and a researcher for The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Islamic Arts Department. Wafa continues her mother’s educational legacy through The Tatreez Institute (Tatreez & Tea), a global arts education initiative she began in 2016.

Sabine Boghossian is a multidisciplinary creative who dives headfirst into anything that captures her curiosity. Omar Thawabeh is a Beirut-based translator, writer and the co-host of afikra's Outline podcast. His translations and essays were published in Bidayat, The Public Source, Oasis, among other platforms and magazines. In 2023, his Arabic translation of Lamia Ziadé’s graphic novel "Bye Bye Babylone" was published by Mauzoun.

دينا محمد، رسامة ومصممة مصرية. بدأت في مجال الكوميكس في سن الـ١٨ لما نشرت سلسلة الكوميكس الرقمية “قاهرة” اللي كانت تتناول القضايا الإجتماعية من منظور سوبرهيرو مصرية محجبة. ظهرت هذه السلسلة المصورة على عديد من المواقع الإعلامية مثل البي بي سي وفورين بوليسي ونالت جائزة في مهرجان القصة المصورة بالقاهرة عام ٢٠١٥. روايتها المصورة “شبيك لبيك” هي قصة مصورة خيالية عن الأمنيات، صادرة عن دار المحروسة بمصر في ٢٠١٨، و حازت على جائزتا أفضل رواية مصورة والجائزة الكبرى لمهرجان القاهرة للقصة المصورة في ٢٠١٧ وكانت أيضاً معروضة بمتحف القصة المصورة بأنغولم في فرنسا كجزء من معرض الكوميكس العربية المعاصرة. الجزء الأول من شبيك لبيك حالياً متوافر بالأسواق باللغة العربية والترجمة الإنجليزية للثلاث أجزاء ستنشر من طرف دار بانثيون بالولايات المتحدة وجرانتا بالمملكة المتحدة في ٢٠٢١. غير ذلك شاركت في كذه معرض دولي بفرنسا، ألمانيا وإنجلترا وبعيد عن الكوميكس الخاصة بي، بشارك في مشاريع فريلانس داخل وخارج مصر، و أفضل بالذات المشاركة في مشاريع تخص المجتمع والتنمية، و أيضا قصص الأطفال

Nadia Kaabi-Linke was born in Tunis, Tunisia, in 1978, and raised in Tunisia and the United Arab Emirates. She graduated from the University of Fine Arts, Tunis, in 1999, and earned a Ph.D. at Université Paris-Sorbonne, in 2008. Growing up between Tunis, Kyiv, and Dubai, and now residing in Berlin and Kyiv, Kaabi-Linke has a personal history of migration across cultures and borders that has greatly influenced her work. Her works give physical presence to that which tends to remain invisible, be it people, structures, or the geopolitical forces that shape them.

In 2012, Mohamed founded Egyptian Streets (ES Media) as a blog to share his ramblings about Egypt on. Two years later, Egyptian Streets was founded as a media company in Egypt and has become one of the region’s fastest growing media organizations and Egypt’s leading independent English media organization. In January 2018, Mohamed and co-founder Mostafa Amin were selected among Forbes Europe 30 Under 30 in Media & Marketing for “defining and driving the world of news and content”. In March 2018, Mohamed and Mostafa were also named in the first ever Arab 30 Under 30 list by Forbes Middle East for innovation and transformation of the rules of business.

In January 2018, Mohamed and co-founder Mostafa Amin were selected among Forbes Europe 30 Under 30 in Media & Marketing for “defining and driving the world of news and content”. In March 2018, Mohamed and Mostafa were also named in the first ever Arab 30 Under 30 list by Forbes Middle East for innovation and transformation of the rules of business.

Media of the Masses investigates the social life of an everyday technology—the cassette tape—to offer a multisensory history of modern Egypt. Over the 1970s and 1980s, cassettes became a ubiquitous presence in Egyptian homes and stores.

Andrew Simon is a historian of media, popular culture, and the modern Middle East. He holds a B.A. in Arabic, Middle East, and Islamic Studies from Duke University and was a fellow at the Center for Arabic Study Abroad in Cairo during the 2011 Egyptian Revolution. He received his Ph.D. from Cornell University and is currently serving as a lecturer at Dartmouth. Andrew's interdisciplinary research has received generous support from the Social Science Research Council and the American Research Center in Egypt, and his work has been published in the International Journal of Middle East Studiesand cited in the Washington Post. Andrew's first book, Media of the Masses: Cassette Culture in Modern Egypt (2022), is forthcoming with Stanford University Press and shares the extraordinary story of an ordinary object.

Media of the Masses investigates the social life of an everyday technology—the cassette tape—to offer a multisensory history of modern Egypt. Over the 1970s and 1980s, cassettes became a ubiquitous presence in Egyptian homes and stores.

Andrew Simon is a historian of media, popular culture, and the modern Middle East. He holds a B.A. in Arabic, Middle East, and Islamic Studies from Duke University and was a fellow at the Center for Arabic Study Abroad in Cairo during the 2011 Egyptian Revolution. He received his Ph.D. from Cornell University and is currently serving as a lecturer at Dartmouth. Andrew's interdisciplinary research has received generous support from the Social Science Research Council and the American Research Center in Egypt, and his work has been published in the International Journal of Middle East Studiesand cited in the Washington Post. Andrew's first book, Media of the Masses: Cassette Culture in Modern Egypt (2022), is forthcoming with Stanford University Press and shares the extraordinary story of an ordinary object.

Since her MA graduation in African and Islamic Studies at the University of Cologne (Germany) with a focus on art and gender, Larissa works as a cultural manager and curator. After her great experience as an undergraduate student at Khartoum University, she decided to work in Sudan‘s arts scene for several years and founded the urban arts initiative ‘Yalla Khartoum’ with a collective of urban artists and co-founded the feminist band ‘Salute Yal Bannot’.

Sabine Boghossian is a multidisciplinary creative who dives headfirst into anything that captures her curiosity. Omar Thawabeh is a Beirut-based translator, writer and the co-host of afikra's Outline podcast. His translations and essays were published in Bidayat, The Public Source, Oasis, among other platforms and magazines. In 2023, his Arabic translation of Lamia Ziadé’s graphic novel "Bye Bye Babylone" was published by Mauzoun.

Adib Dada is the founder of theOtherDada [tOD] Regenerative Consultancy & Architecture firm, which mission is to activate projects across architecture, living systems, and art. Adib has been recognized in Apollo Magazine's 40 Under 40 as a Patron of the Arts in the Middle East, and was listed as one of GOOD Magazine’s GOOD 100 for his project Beirut RiverLESS.

Sabine Boghossian is a multidisciplinary creative who dives headfirst into anything that captures her curiosity. Born and bred in a multicultural household in Aleppo, Syria, she has spent the last decade balancing her life between Beirut and Brussels. Her passion for food and sensitivity to language fuel her diverse practice, which spans scenography, design, and copywriting on subjects as varied as food, architecture, and identity. She recently launched "yurs" a line of repairable leather goods in the form of DIY kits.

Omar Thawabeh is a Beirut-based translator, writer and the co-host of afikra's Outline podcast. His translations and essays were published in Bidayat, The Public Source, Oasis, among other platforms and magazines. In 2023, his Arabic translation of Lamia Ziadé’s graphic novel "Bye Bye Babylone" was published by Mauzoun.

The project, inspired by the global movement of Citizen Science and driven by the mutual benefit that can exist when professional researchers and members of the public work alongside one another, was developed to engage members of the public in NYUAD research.
