AUGUST 21: Post-Partum Depression, Columbus Housing Market Tops $350,000, Evacuation Orders for Flooding, and Football Friday Night

(1:40-9:23) Buckeye Lake evacuated and I-70 Closed Due to Flooding

Thursday's rain not only made for the second wettest August on record, but it's also prompted multiple evacuation orders in Licking County and has a large portion of I-70 shut down until the water recedes. Besides a chance for more rain Saturday, central Ohio should have a decent break from rain in the coming forecast.

(9:53-17:26) 97.1 the Fan's Tyvis Powell

Fall means football. With high schools back in session, a lot of schools are having their first football Friday nights of the season. Tonight's First & 10 focuses on the game between Olentangy Orange and Olentangy Berlin.

(17:41-25:54) Central Ohio Still Considered a Sellers Market

The July housing report from Columbus Realtors shows closed sales were up 6.3% year over year. Median home prices topped $350,000 while the region had the highest July inventory in more than a decade. Gloria Alonso-Cannon, President of the Columbus Realtors Association, talks about what's driving buyers and is there any hope for a break in housing prices.

(26:09-37:07) Maternal Mental Health Conversation

We continue our conversation from earlier in the week about maternal mental health and a focus on post-partum depression and psychosis. According to the Policy Center for Maternal Mental Health, the mental health of US mothers has worsened in the past decade. Between 2016 and 2023, there was a 65% increase in mothers reporting "fair to poor mental health." Also, 20% of maternal deaths in the US are due to suicide, according to the CDC. Dr. Tamar Gur, a Maternal-Fetal Psychiatrist at the OSU Wexner Medical Center, joins the conversation about the signs and resources available to mothers who might be struggling.

(37:22-45:47) Shannon Hardin Announces Mayoral Run

For the first time, Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther is facing a challenger from his own party. Columbus City Council President Shannon Hardin announced a run for mayor Thursday. When he assumed the Council President role in 2018, he was the youngest person and the first openly gay person to do so. Hardin sat down with 10TV's Yolanda Harris to talk about why he thinks he's fit to run the city.

(46:02-49:21) USA Today Releases Top 25 Party Schools

No Ohio school made the top 10, but three of them made the top 25. Which ones made the cut and which ones didn't may surprise you.

AUGUST 20: ODH Talks Childhood Vaccination Rates, Ohio Drivers Like Speeding, COTA Makes Changes to Make Riding Easier, andFlooding Causes Problems

(1:00-9:00) Flooding Causes Widespread School Delays and Closures

Inches of rain fell on central Ohio again Thursday morning and the flooding led to many schools delaying the day or canceling altogether. It also shut down I-71 south for hours and caused a number of other roadway headaches. This all as the region tries to dry out from last week's flooding.

(9:00-13:00) AAA Study on Speeding

According to a new study from AAA, many drivers say going up to 10 mph over the speed limit is acceptable with 3/10 saying no one drives the speed limit. This as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows that speeding is a factor for 30% of traffic fatalities in 2024. Morgan Dean, of AAA, joins the conversation to talk about driving trends and how speeding affects how we all travel.

(13:30-23:01) ODH Director Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff on Childhood Vaccinations

Vaccination exemptions have increased among U.S. kindergarteners to 4.2% from 3.6%. Ohio's exemption rate among kindergarteners is now 5.6% for the 2025-2026 school year. Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff, Ohio Department of Health Director, talks about what's driving parents to turn away from vaccines, new federal recommendations and the importance of childhood vaccinations.

(23:31-31:52) Columbus Urban League's Clean and Safe Corridor Initiative

The Columbus Urban League is giving out up to five grants for $10,000 to promote the Clean and Safe Corridor initiative in the King-Lincoln Bronzeville neighborhood. Recipients must have a pitch and plan to improve safety and quality of life in the historically Black neighborhood.

(32:07-37:40) COTA Makes Riding Easier for OSU Students

Buckeyes started moving in this week and classes start Tuesday. This year, students will have an easier time riding COTA. OSU students can now use their BuckID app to ride COTA instead of swiping their BuckID card, carrying a COTA pass, or using the Transit app.

(37:55-48:53) Rain is Done for Thursday, but What's Next?

AUGUST 19: Property Tax Relief, Columbus City Schools Deficit, Flock Camera Vandalism, and Maternal Mental Health

(1:55-6:00) Columbus City Schools Deficit Update

Tuesday night, the Columbus City Schools treasurer provided an update to the district's five-year forecast. The district is projecting a $53 million deficit this fiscal year. That's less than the $59 million predicting back in February. However, the district expects the deficit to grow to $157 million by 2031. The district has made cuts to staff, transportation, and school buildings to try and right the budget and now there are talks of going to voters for a new tax.

(6:00-10:35) Flock Camera Vandalism

Flock cameras continue to be a hotly contested topic not just in central Ohio, but nationwide. The village of Hebron had three cameras vandalized recently and the police chief says he won't be intimidated into taking them down. Surrounding communities have also reported damage. Nationwide, people have turned to cutting them down, spray painting the lenses or covering them up to send their message.

(16:35-22:29) Property Tax Relief with Franklin County Auditor Michael Stinziano

Damage caused by last week's severe weather may qualify homeowners for temporary property tax relief. How much of a reduction you get depends on the amount of damage you have and it does require some paperwork. Franklin County Auditor Michael Stinziano joins the conversation about how to seek this help.

(23:00-33:34) Maternal Mental Health

Lindsay Clancy, 36 of Plymouth, Massachusetts, is facing three counts of murder after she was accused of killing her three children. The case has put a spotlight on maternal mental health, especially post-partum depression. Tonya Fulwider, the Executive Director of Mental Health America of Ohio, talks wtih Bryn and Collin about resources available to mothers struggling with life after birth.

AUGUST 18: Delaware County Murder Investigation, Red Cross Helps Flood Victims, and Navigating Mortgage Rates

(1:40-4:20) Two Shootings in North Central Columbus

A drive-by shooting happened early Monday afternoon following a funeral service on Woodward Avenue. Two people were shot and are expected to survive. Then just after 10:30 Monday night, another shooting happened about three miles away on Gibbard Avenue and sent two women to the hospital and a Columbus Police Officer fired their weapon. Are the two shootings connected? We've asked police.

(4:21-8:13) Building Explosion and Fire in Toledo

Around 5a.m. Tuesday, two explosions rocked a commercial laundry facility in south Toledo. It caused a massive fire. While no fatalities have been confirmed, two employees were still unaccounted for at the time of this recording.

(8:28-18:19) Navigating Mortgage Rates and Homebuying

Mortgage rates fell slightly for the first time in six months earlier this month to an average of 6.67%. That's still more than what buyers were locking in last year, though. Dawn Brahma, with Kemba! Financial, and realtor Kourtney Dewald join Bryn and Collin about navigating the housing market and your options as a buyer.

(18:49-24:20) Red Cross Operating Shelters

The Red Cross still has shelters set up in Perry and Franklin Counties in Ohio and one in Indiana following intense flooding and storms from the past week. Red Cross volunteers will continue assisting families in need even after the shelters close at some future point. Also, the blood shortage situation has improved. 10TV has joined the Red Cross, 97.1 The Fan and Chik-Fil-A in hosting a blood drive from 8 a.m-6 p.m., August 19 at the Columbus Airport Marriott. To sign up: text GIVE to 614-460-3345. People who donate can receive a ticket to Cedar Point or Kings Island (while supplies last).

(24:48-36:27) Columbus Participatory Budget

As part of OneProject Columbus, different districts of the city are tasked with spending $1 million in city money for projects that will benefit the people living there. Community for New Direction CEO John Dawson joins the conversation to talk about the wants of District 7, which covers most of downtown, Franklinton, the near east side, and Southern Orchards. So far, the requests have been for more green spaces. There's another meeting to give opinions Wednesday evening.

(36:42-45:24) Delaware County Homicide

Three people, including the 18-year-old daughter of the victim, face murder charges in the death of 55-year-old Tamela Dutcher last week in Delaware County. 10TV's Kevin Landers breaks down the case and how it continues to unfold as more information comes out. There's also an interesting twist in the story going back to 2024.

(45:39-51:00) AI Usage in Home Listings

Do you spend time scrolling Zillow, Redfin, or another home listing site looking for the perfect home? Turns out not all listings are legitimate. Some less-than-savory sellers are using AI to spruce up a home, sometimes adding windows, walls, and features that don't exist. Don't find yourself duped and know what laws exist in Ohio to protect you.

August 4: Pickering Schools Levy, National Night Out, Upper Arlington Burglaries, and OSU Wants Your Toenails

(02:58-06:34) Upper Arlington Break-Ins

Two teens were arrested early Monday morning after a number of overnight burglaries Sunday. Police are still looking for a third burglar seen in home surveillance video. Detectives are investigating at least five home burglaries in the Tewksbury Road area, but it's still unclear if anything was taken during the break-ins, according to an Upper Arlington police spokesperson. Officials believe the suspects randomly targeted houses, capitalizing on locations with unlocked doors or windows.

(06:35-07:58) Constitutional Amendment Would Enshrine Voter ID Laws in Ohio

Ohio voters will decide in November if requiring voter photo ID to cast a ballot should be enshrined in the state constitution after the Ohio Ballot Board approved the ballot language Monday. The amendment would require voters to show a government-issued photo ID in order to cast a ballot. The forms of valid identification listed in the measure are the same ones already required under state law: an Ohio driver's license, a state ID card, a U.S. passport, a U.S. military or Ohio National Guard ID, or a Department of Veterans Affairs ID. Republicans supporting the amendment say it would prevent future governing bodies from rolling back current Ohio law. Democrats against the amendment say it isn't needed. Voters will decide November 5.

(08:13-15:12) National Night Out

National Night Out happens every August as a way to connect communities to their law enforcement. Bryn and Collin are joined by Columbus Police and the Department of Neighborhoods to talk about the effects of the program over the years and what Tuesday evening will look like.

(15:17-21:24) National Night Out (con't)

Our conversation on National Night Out continues. Kesha Richardson with ACE Community House and Lydia Cumming with Harrison West Society, Inc join the conversation about the importance of the event on their communities.

(21:54-32:45) Rt. 23 / I-71 Connector Meetings

The state wants an easier way to get between Rt. 23 and I-71 in central Ohio as the region grows. It would cut through Morrow, Delaware and Marion Counties. Some people living in those counties aren't happy with the proposal. ODOT is holding six meetings from Tuesday to Thursday to get input about the proposed project.

(33:00-40:24) Pickerington Local Schools Levy

Pickerington Local Schools Board of Education voted Monday night to put a 10-year, 0.75% income tax on the November ballot to fund the school system just months after voters rejected a more expensive proposal in May. the school board met last month and determined it needed to raise nearly $22 million in annual revenue. School leaders have warned the district is about two years away from being unable to meet its financial obligations if additional revenue is not secured. Superintendent Dr. Charles Smialek joins Collin and Bryn on why the money is needed and what happens if the district can't pay its bills.

(40:39-48:36) OSU Wants Your Toenails, Starbucks Brings Back Pumpkin Spice

Researchers at OSU want toenail clippings and baby teeth as part of a study on oilfield brine. These will help determine the long-term effects of a product used on Ohio roads.

Starbucks is bringing back pumpkin spice and its fall menu August 25, but is it too soon?

The conversation explored why many products fail basic nutrition recommendations, the long-term impact sugar and sodium can have on children's eating habits and how parents can make healthier choices by reading nutrition labels instead of relying solely on toddler-friendly marketing.

(42:59- 48:56) Closing

The show wrapped up with a visit to the Ohio State Fair, where Bryn shared highlights from her day at the fair before Angela Ann took viewers inside the Showcase Building. The episode concluded with the latest entertainment headlines during the Hollywood Minute, including news surrounding The Odyssey.

JULY 31: Busy Central Ohio Weekend, Recapping Big Ten Media Day, Pelotonia Kicks Off Friday

BUSY weekend in central Ohio and chances of rain (00:35-08:25)

If you're bored in central Ohio this weekend, you aren't looking hard enough. The Ohio State Fair continues. Pelotonia kicks off its 18th year Friday evening. Thousands of cyclists and even more spectators will fill downtown Columbus to raise money for cancer research. Dublin Irish Fest runs through the weekend as well; filled with Irish food, music and culture. Saturday brings a chance of rain, but it won't be a wash out.

Pammy Maye offered a plea deal (08:26-10:32)

The woman accused of killing five-year-old Darnell Taylor in 2024 was offered a plea deal. She must accept the deal either Friday or Monday. If she doesn't accept the deal, her case will go to trial in August. If she takes the plea deal, she will plead guilty to aggravated murder and abuse of a corpse. She would face a sentence of 21 years to life in prison.

Tyvis Powell, 97.1 The Fan, talks sports (10:51-17:37)

From the Buckeyes at Big Ten Media Day in Chicago to Chris Olave's NFL contract, Tyvis Powell is talking all things big when it comes to Ohio sports.

PAST Foundation Graduation (18:11-24:13)

Since 2000, the PAST Foundation in Columbus has been providing real-world experiences to students to get them ready for the workforce. PAST connects the classroom to scientific research. The Foundation graduated more than a dozen students Thursday. We are joined by one of the students and a program leader talking about how this has shaped the future of central Ohio students.

Pelotonia starts Friday (24:28-34:17)

Pelotonia was founded on one goal: together we can work together to end cancer. Over the past 18 years, it has become one of central Ohio's signature events bringing in more than 8,000 cyclists and 8,000 volunteers. Every dollar raised during the ride goes toward innovative research at the James Cancer Center at the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center. Pelotonia CEO Joe Apgar joins The Big Picture to share his cancer story and the importance of the event.

Big changes at the Ohio State Fair (34:47-42:36)

2026 is the 171st Ohio State Fair and a lot has changed since the first one in 1850 in Cincinnati. 10TV anchor Angela An joins to talk about the new buildings at the fairgrounds this year and what visitors to the Ohio State Fair will see and experience.

Also, electric bills in Ohio are increasing at a significantly faster rate than the rest of the country. We break down the why.
