WHEN I SEE THE WOLF RIDE, BOOK 1

WHEN I SEE THE WOLF RIDE, BOOK 1, is a new, serialized, free audio book fictional adventure, with chapters released as podcasts about every week or so. it's free to listen to each chapter as they are released.

BOOK 1 is the first of three books in the fiction adventure novel WHEN I SEE THE WOLF RIDE, which begins when eighteen-year-old Lee Dunham is drafted into the army three days after his widowed mother's funeral. Soon, Lee is faced with an impossible choice from a heartless commander - kill innocent villagers, or be killed. Lee's choice throws him into a secret mission that will affect hundreds of lives and change Lee's life forever. BOOK 1 is the beginning of an epic, lifelong adventure that will challenge Lee's faith in himself as well as his faith in God. Along the way, he is confronted by a legend that has come to life -the Cherokee Warrior, which he thought was just a character made up by the father of his army buddy, Wolf. Lee can't tell whether this mysterious horse soldier is a ghost, an angel, or just a figment of his imagination. The Cherokee Warrior challenges him with visions from his future and inexplicable messages he can't understand.

Please also check out our INSIDE THE CHAPTERS podcast hosted by Michele
Jaco. Each week, she reviews the new chapter with the author of WHEN I
SEE THE WOLF RIDE to examine the origins of the ideas and symbolism
hidden in the story.

ABOUT THE AUDIO PRODUCTION

Each chapter's audio production is read by the author, with some
additional parts read by Michele Jaco. Using AI technology and other
techniques, the final product sounds as if it has a full cast of voices,
which adds realism to the final production.

Their first mission is to investigate some old buildings in Rhome, Texas, where they discover a woman with a vicious dog that attacks Lee and a big man that is trying to take out Captain Avigdor. After subduing the suspects, they rescue fourteen young girls that have been kidnapped.
After being detained for debriefing for the rest of the week, Lee visits Awenasa, Degataga, and Eliabeth. They have all been worried about him, and Elizabeth is visibly angry with him because the Rangers wouldn’t let him call her.
When he returns to his new adopted parents’ house, he gets the news that D.J has run away from the Catholic School-and there is a dangerous thunderstorm coming.
Lee races back to Dallas, watching the storm grow worse. At the Catholic school campus, he races through the grounds as the rain pours and tornado sirens wail in the background.

Lee asks to borrow the Captain’s truck to drive to Durant, Oklahoma to return the amulet to Wolf’s family. He also hopes to explain to Dung that he doesn’t want to be his dad.
When they meet Wolf’s parents, Lee is astonished by their acceptance of him and Dung. They tell Lee the amulet should be returned to Wolf’s fiancé, Elizabeth, who works at Fort Washita.
When Lee meets Elizabeth, he is immediately struck by her beauty. Then, as they talk about Wolf and share stories, they become emotional as Lee tells Elizabeth how he had to helplessly watch the fake colonel kill Wolf.
At this point, Lee remembers the amulet, and gives it to Elizabeth

After some reconnaissance, he discovers there are two Vietcong camps of soldiers within just a few miles of other. So far, the soldiers have just taken food from Mama T, but he’s terrified that one of the Vietcong camps might return to kill them all. And now, on top of all that, a big storm is coming.
He feels he can’t take the chance that the Vietcong camps will leave the orphanage alone, so he devises a daring plan.

ABOUT THE AUDIO PRODUCTION

Each chapter's audio production is read by the author, with some
additional parts read by Michele Jaco. Using AI technology and other
techniques, the final product sounds as if it has a full cast of voices,
which adds realism to the final production.

<itunes:summary>Captain Avigdor, Hershey, Wolf, Snake and Lee meet another member of the Captain’s team – Art, who is an Italian explosives expert with a very long name.
Then they encounter two Russian men at a river who have come to pick up Snake and the truck driver. They kill one of the team and take Hershey prisoner, forcing him onto a raft.
Lee goes with Art on his raft to follow them, as Wolf swims up the river. The men have taken Hershey into a large cave. Art and Lee follow them, but are captured by the two Russians, who are working under a man who claims he is a U.S. Army colonel.
As the colonel tries to persuade them he is not a traitor and that they must divulge the whereabouts of Captain Avigdor, Wolf is captured as well. But Wolf confronts the fake colonel with evidence that he really is a traitor.

INSIDE THE CHAPTERS, WHEN I SEE THE WOLF RIDE, BOOK 1: CHAPTER 6

Originally, I had Snake as a major character in the entire story, turning into a good guy, but living a life of regret, similar to the Apostle Paul. I wanted to see what happened to a genuinely bad guy if he went through a repentance, and lived the rest of his life trying to follow God, but remembering what he was like before he made that decision.

To make him more relatable, I originally wrote a flashback sequence when he had escaped and knew he was being hunted: In it, he is watching a deadly snake, considering whether to try and catch it.

You can download a PDF of that sequence here:

https://www.opendrive.com/file/NV8xOTI3NjMwNzBfazViRWI

The Snakeman’s memories are parallel to his interaction with the deadly krait. It’s as if it’s his soulmate-the deadly predator that no other creature can trust, and that will watch you with the intent of striking at the right moment to survive.

In Snake’s backstory, We find him lying beaten against a curb when an old man intervenes, teaching him not only to overcome his fear of poisonous snakes, but to catch them. To weaponize them.

This is a guy who has focused on his own survival since his childhood. Some people live their lives focused on seeking out pleasure, others live for honor and what’s right, but this Snakeman looks for opportunity. Nothing else matters. Other people have never been of use to him except as tools, because HE has never really experienced love. He sees a world full of vipers that will strike him when they see opportunity, so his attitude is that he will strike first. This is a character who truly doesn’t feel anything for anyone.

This Snakeman is very perceptive. He knows he barely got away from someone-but it wasn’t Vietcong. His best hope is going back to camp. He works out his story, wounding himself to get sympathy.

It was hard to lose this backstory. I really wanted to see him get saved and be better. Maybe that's the way God feels about us...

<itunes:summary>The guys in Lee’s unit determine that Captain Avigdor is a good man who’s been tracking Bozoner, and that he saved Lee’s life by killing Bozoner before he could pull the trigger on his gun and kill Lee.
Now, the Captain tells them Bozoner wasn’t the only officer doing this. There’s another one-and he’s worse. The Captain is determined to find him and stop him. All the men pledge to help the Captain on this mission. Lee hesitates, because he doesn’t want to put Dung in danger.
So the Captain takes them to a tiny orphanage hidden near a river where Dung can stay. And Lee finds out the Captain has a young daughter there.
After this, the Captain briefs them on their mission. He believes this other officer will send someone to pick up Snake, who will flee to the base camp. Their mission is to track him and see where he’s taken-but Burns interrupts.

I did a ton of research, and what kept coming up from the guys that did go was how impoverished so many of the people were. I felt it was important to try and paint that picture for Lee to experience. Bozoner is not based on a real soldier, but I did read about a lot of atrocities by our guys as well as by the enemy, and some articles talked about how the government wanted to make it look more like we were winning the war, because every night on the news, the number of American dead being reported was really alarming. And there was a huge backlash in the country, especially among young people, against our being there in the first place. <itunes:summary>In this chapter, Lee and his unit fall under the command of Lt. Colonel Derek Bozoner. Bozoner tells them he can kill them if they don’t follow his orders. He then takes them-along with some other men working under him-to small Vietnamese villages where they hand out supplies to the starving people.
Lee meets a cute little Vietnamese boy named Dung, who follows him everywhere.
During their last visit, Dung asks Lee to be his father. Before Lee can answer, there is a stirring in the camp-and we witness the scene Lee described in Chapter 1 when Bozoner held a gun to his head, threatening to kill him if he did not fire on the villagers. But this time, we see the actual outcome.

INSIDE THE CHAPTERS, WHEN I SEE THE WOLF RIDE, BOOK 1, CHAPTER 2

In this episode, reviewing Chapter 2, I have to ask the question - Is Lee a hero, or an anti-hero? (Webster defines an antihero as “a protagonist or notable figure who is conspicuously lacking in heroic qualities.) We'll compare old movie heroes to modern movie heroes. Lee is really angry, and in Chapter 2 he defends a couple of the soldiers in his unit against some bigoted guys from another unit. Is that heroic? Most of us would feel Lee’s anger is justified, but is his anger righteous anger – or is it just an excuse to fight?

In this episode, reviewing Chapter 2, I have to ask the question - Is Lee a hero, or an anti-hero? (Webster defines an antihero as “a protagonist or notable figure who is conspicuously lacking in heroic qualities.) We'll compare old movie heroes to modern movie heroes. Lee is really angry, and in Chapter 2 he defends a couple of the soldiers in his unit against some bigoted guys from another unit. Is that heroic? Most of us would feel Lee’s anger is justified, but is his anger righteous anger – or is it just an excuse to fight?

Wolf's voice was hard, too. How do you convincingly sound like a Cherokee? I've always felt I had a mid-range voice that didn't really sound that good. In order to make it sound deeper, I got up to read these parts early in the morning, about 5:00 AM. When I tried to read later than that, it was like I would lose the entire lower range of my voice. I'm not an actor, but I can imagine in my mind how the voices and the inflections should sound . Most of times I read this, I think I got close to make it believable. <itunes:summary>On the bus to Fort Hood, Lee is befriended by another soldier, who calls himself Hershey.
Lee hates everyone and everything. He believes his hatred will help him get through this experience, and to an extent, he’s right.
He becomes a skilled soldier. He describes the other men in his unit, Hershey, Snake, Sarge, Zap, and Wolf, a native Cherokee from southern Oklahoma. Although he says he hates them all, he admits having respect for Wolf because he is a fierce warrior.
Lee is spoiling for a fight-and he finds one when he comes upon some other soldiers trying to bully Hershey and Wolf.
Lee attacks the main perpetrator with a knife, and only lets him go when they all promise to back off.

Here's one of the issues we discuss:

In the story, my main character is critical of the cities of Van Alstyne, Texas and Sherman, Texas. He doesn't like the church, the people, or even the members of his family that lived there. I want to emphasize this is part of his character development. Remember, the year is 1971. He's dealing with grief and the feeling that death is not only always around him, but actually seems to be chasing him. When his mother died, he lost virtually all of their possessions to pay bills. Then he immediately left to go to the army. So his PERCEPTION of these places is really negative. I still have family that lives in this area, and it's always fun to go back and see how Sherman and Van Alstyne have grown into wonderful little towns, each with interesting histories and people that make them great places to visit and to live.

After sharing his thoughts on death, Lee explains that his face is the face of death to a small village of Vietnamese people in the Vietnam War-because he has been ordered to kill them by his commanding officer. He refuses, even after that officer threatens to shoot Lee if he doesn’t shoot the villagers.
We hear a shot ring out, with people screaming, and Lee describing its aftermath. Lee asks himself how he ever came to this point in his life.
Then Lee recalls his home town, his beginnings, the death of his mother, and how he was drafted into the army the day after her funeral.
