The next day, while he’s fighting a hangover, Captain Avigdor orders him to come for dinner that night telling Lee he’s gonna get him right. That night, Lee meets the Captain’s new housekeeper, Ipo, a beautiful native Hawaiian, who gives Lee a special massage and an incredible meal. Lee tries calling Elizabeth to make a date, but she tells him she has a date with someone else. Then she hangs up on him. Their first mission is to investigate some old buildings in Rhome, Texas, where they discover a woman with a vicious dog that attacks Lee and a big man that is trying to take out Captain Avigdor. After subduing the suspects, they rescue fourteen young girls that have been kidnapped. After being detained for debriefing for the rest of the week, Lee visits Awenasa, Degataga, and Eliabeth. They have all been worried about him, and Elizabeth is visibly angry with him because the Rangers wouldn’t let him call her. When he returns to his new adopted parents’ house, he gets the news that D.J has run away from the Catholic School-and there is a dangerous thunderstorm coming. Lee races back to Dallas, watching the storm grow worse. At the Catholic school campus, he races through the grounds as the rain pours and tornado sirens wail in the background. Captain Avigdor gives Lee an undercover job supervised by the Texas Rangers, along with Hershey and Art. He sees Mama T. bringing them food, which gives him hope that everyone there is still alive. After some reconnaissance, he discovers there are two Vietcong camps of soldiers within just a few miles of other. So far, the soldiers have just taken food from Mama T, but he’s terrified that one of the Vietcong camps might return to kill them all. And now, on top of all that, a big storm is coming. He feels he can’t take the chance that the Vietcong camps will leave the orphanage alone, so he devises a daring plan. But after encountering enemy fire and rapids, they are thrown into the water and separated. Captain Avigdor makes it to shore, but Lee is stranded in the river. He manages to find a large floating log and lets the river carry him toward the orphanage. From the river, he finally sees the huts of the orphanage. To make him more relatable, I originally wrote a flashback sequence when he had escaped and knew he was being hunted: In it, he is watching a deadly snake, considering whether to try and catch it.

The Snakeman’s memories are parallel to his interaction with the deadly krait. It’s as if it’s his soulmate-the deadly predator that no other creature can trust, and that will watch you with the intent of striking at the right moment to survive.

I never went to Vietnam and I was never in the Army, but the main character Lee needed that experience to make it believable that he would be tough enough to do the other things he does later in his life in the story. I did a ton of research, and what kept coming up  from the guys that did go was how impoverished so many of the people were. I felt it was important to try and paint that picture for Lee to experience. Bozoner is not based on a real soldier, but I did read about a lot of atrocities by our guys as well as by the enemy, and some articles talked about how the government wanted to make it look more like we were winning the war, because every night on the news, the number of American dead being reported was really alarming. And there was a huge backlash in the country, especially among young people, against our being there in the first place. SO with all that going on, I felt Bozoner could be a believable character. - JN

I never went to Vietnam and I was never in the Army, but the main character Lee needed that experience to make it believable that he would be tough enough to do the other things he does later in his life in the story. I did a ton of research, and what kept coming up  from the guys that did go was how impoverished so many of the people were. I felt it was important to try and paint that picture for Lee to experience. Bozoner is not based on a real soldier, but I did read about a lot of atrocities by our guys as well as by the enemy, and some articles talked about how the government wanted to make it look more like we were winning the war, because every night on the news, the number of American dead being reported was really alarming. And there was a huge backlash in the country, especially among young people, against our being there in the first place. SO with all that going on, I felt Bozoner could be a believable character. - JN

]]> CHAPTER 3: The Face of Death MICHELE JACO, JEFF NEILL 00:23:08 In this chapter, Lee and his unit fall under the command of Lt. Colonel Derek Bozoner. Bozoner tells them he can kill them if they don’t follow his orders. He then takes them-along with some other men working under him-to small Vietnamese villages where they hand out supplies to the starving people. Lee meets a cute little Vietnamese boy named Dung, who follows him everywhere. During their last visit, Dung asks Lee to be his father. Before Lee can answer, there is a stirring in the camp-and we witness the scene Lee described in Chapter 1 when Bozoner held a gun to his head, threatening to kill him if he did not fire on the villagers. I guess you can tell I'm doing all of the voices for these episodes. I really struggled trying to get Hershey's voice to sound right. He's like a lot of friends I've had, that put up with me even when I was going through some tough times and I was a grump. Wolf's voice was hard, too. How do you convincingly sound like a Cherokee? I've always felt I had a mid-range voice that didn't really sound that good. In order to make it sound deeper, I got up to read these parts early in the morning, about 5:00 AM. When I tried to read later than that, it was like I would lose the entire lower range of my voice. I'm not an actor, but I can imagine in my mind how the voices and the inflections should sound . Most of times I read this, I think I got close to make it believable. Anyway, I hope you like it.  - JN

He believes his hatred will help him get through this experience, and to an extent, he’s right. He becomes a skilled soldier. He describes the other men in his unit, Hershey, Snake, Sarge, Zap, and Wolf, a native Cherokee from southern Oklahoma. Although he says he hates them all, he admits having respect for Wolf because he is a fierce warrior. Lee is spoiling for a fight-and he finds one when he comes upon some other soldiers trying to bully Hershey and Wolf. In the story, my main character is critical of the cities of Van Alstyne, Texas and Sherman, Texas. He doesn't like the church, the people, or even the members of his family that lived there. I want to emphasize this is part of his character development. Remember, the year is 1971. He's dealing with grief and the feeling that death is not only always around him, but actually seems to be chasing him. When his mother died, he lost virtually all of their possessions to pay bills. Then he immediately left to go to the army. So his PERCEPTION of these places is really negative. I still have family that lives in this area, and it's always fun to go back and see how Sherman and Van Alstyne have grown into wonderful little towns, each with interesting histories and people that make them great places to visit and to live.

After sharing his thoughts on death, Lee explains that his face is the face of death to a small village of Vietnamese people in the Vietnam War-because he has been ordered to kill them by his commanding officer. He refuses, even after that officer threatens to shoot Lee if he doesn’t shoot the villagers. We hear a shot ring out, with people screaming, and Lee describing its aftermath. Lee asks himself how he ever came to this point in his life. Then Lee recalls his home town, his beginnings, the death of his mother, and how he was drafted into the army the day after her funeral.
