Brian's been at WGR since 2001 and has been doing the pregame and postgame shows since 2007-08. Eric was in Buffalo this week to take part in Josh Allen's 117 hole golf challenge to benefit the Patricia Allen Fund at Children's hospital. To be clear, the 117 holes is not a typo, it's the amount of holes played in one day and incredibly, without golf carts. It's amazing Eric even has the energy to talk after completing that---what was that event like for him and his fellow golfers?

Changes came big for the Bills after another playoff run that fell short of their goal of reaching a Super Bowl. Of course, the biggest change wasn't among the players but at head coach, as Sean McDermott got fired and Joe Brady promoted. Do the guys think that's an upgrade?

Obviously this was a breakthrough season for the Sabres and the team looks poised to have a sustainable run at the Eastern conference in the coming years. However, the most uncertain aspect of the team arguably is goaltender despite having three guys all under contracts for next year: UPL, Alex Lyon and Colton Ellis in addition to Devon Levi in Rochester.

Chris takes a look at a handful of goalies around the league at least worth discussing in some capacity for trades should their respective teams find a Buffalo package that would make it worth moving on from.

They also discuss the Alex Tuch conundrum. Despite the woeful performance against Montreal Tuch's still a valued commodity and the Sabres will and should want him back. But at what price? Chris has thoughts on what he thinks Buffalo should do and where they should set the hard line at.

Despite the heartbreaking loss that leaves Buffalo fans wondering if they could've went on to beat Carolina and get to the Stanley Cup, there's plenty of positives to take away. The Sabres fell into a 2-0 hole in the first period before dominating the next two periods to tie the game with many chances to win. However, as was all the home games this series they couldn't get anything from Tage Thompson or Alex Tuch and it hurt them again. Buffalo Sabres goaltender Alex Lyon simply wasn't up for the task this past Saturday night, giving up three goals on literally three shots as the Sabres fell into a 3-1 hole at Montreal with the season on the brink. Between Lyon getting yanked, UPL being a disaster the game before, Sabres star players struggling and the game being played in front of a frenzied Montreal crowd that could taste blood, Patrick absolutely declared to anyone within shouting distance of him that the Sabres season was over. Obviously, he was dead wrong as the Sabres stormed back with SEVEN unanswered goals to win 8-3 and set up a game seven.

It got Patrick thinking about some of the things he or we've all been most wrong about when it comes to Buffalo sports. Among the topics discussed with Joe is the disapproval of Josh Allen being selected ahead of Josh Rosen for the Bills in 2018, thinking Rex Ryan was going to make the Bills Super Bowl contenders, tanking for McEichel (controversial subject) and of course, thinking the Bills two year Super Bowl run ended when they fell down to Houston, 35-3 in the playoffs.

Of course, there's plenty of talks about the Sabres storming back to force Monday night's game seven and what they think of Buffalo's chances. That plus their future looks bright, the Bills radio broadcasts are going to 97 Rock and plenty more.

The Sabres scored three times in their home arena in the first period, yet went into the locker room down two goals after 40 minutes. Any chance of a comeback ended shortly into the third after a Rasmus Dahlin penalty led to Montreal's sixth goal. To call it all an implosion is accurate if not an understatement. The guys have a ton of of takes and spoiler alert----- optimistic Sabres fans probably won't like it.

Meanwhile, the guys pour over a lot of the bigger details from the 2026 schedule unveiling. The Bills have six (!) prime time games this season including Thanksgiving night, and that's not including a late afternoon showdown on the road at Denver on Christmas day. To say for better or worse the Bills will be in the national spotlight a lot this season is an understatement.

The guys go over what they like and disliked the most about the looks of the Bills schedule, which ranges from the perfect opponent to be playing coming off their bye (Baltimore), to three straigh home games against good, an expected brutally hard five game stretch late in the season to two extremely winnable games at the end should the Bills absolutely need to have them. Teams around the league have plenty of question marks and underdetermined things that will play out through the course of the summer before the regular season starts in September and the Bills are no exception. The guys discuss some of them including what the defensive tackle position will look in turns of personnel and the depth chart, does the organization like young veteran linebacker Joe Andreesssen more than we think---a reason why they didn't do anything too major in addressing the position.

UPL was shaky in the first period in net for Buffalo, given up two goals before locking down Montreal over the last 40 minutes. Meanwhile, the Sabres scored two power plays goals (one extremely fluky) and killed off six of seven Montreal power plays to key their victory. The guys have plenty to say about all that and also the play of Josh Norris, who Patrick considered crucial to Buffalo's victory.

The guys also have a lot of strong feelings about some horrible officiating and an even worse perspective from the ESPN broadcast that felt biased, one sided and often uninformed.

The Sabres haven't just lost consecutive games to Montreal in the playoffs to fall down two games to one but they've barely looked remotely competitive in doing so.  They've struggled in their own zone badly and haven't been much better in sustaining offensive pressure either. They've been lousy on faceoffs, taken far too many penalties and have had a host of poor individual efforts so far this series.

Patrick discusses the options Lindy has when it comes to the lineup and if he'll make some changes that seem needed, or will he continue to show confidence in a lineup that's quite frankly looking like fools gold.

All this said, not all hope is lost. Patrick explains how just putting one winning performance on Tuesday night, whether it's pretty or uglied up puts the Sabres right back in great position to take control of the series with home ice advantage. But the time is literally now, because if Buffalo loses game four Patrick feels this series is over.

The Buffalo Sabres can absolutely still win this series, but it would be naive if not foolish to conclude they look like a team that's better or even as good as Montreal right now. It's not surprising that Sabres held court to open the series with a win at home in the Key Bank Center, but a few of the biggest reasons why aren't necessarily what most expected. Patrick talks about the incredible effort of fourth line winger Jordan Greenway and middle line center Ryan McLeod really giving the offense a kick start and propelling Buffalo--on a night where they simply didn't get effective play from their top line of Tage Thompson, Alex Tuch and Peyton Krebs.

Patrick also has thoughts on the great coaching of Lindy Ruff late in this game, particularly in the third period as the Sabres played a sound, mature brand of hockey playing with the lead to close out the Canadians in game one.

Buffalo Rumblings (the Bills blog on SB Nation) had an article published by new lead content producer Chris Trapasso with data that shows that non-starting Bills cornerbacks have played plenty during their lengthy/current playoff run. So much so, in fact that it makes their second-round selection of Davison Igbinosun feel a lot wiser, even though he's not projected to be a starter and may not be a starter for years to come. The guys discuss the data and cite examples even casual Bills fans will remember from recent playoff failures as a reason why you need to have not just depth at cornerback, but the highest quality depth possible.

Also, the NFL draft has come and gone and we're nearly a week into May, yet eight(!) of the Bills top 14 defensive players from last year are still unsigned free agents. What does that say about the talent from last year's defensive unit and/or what does that say about former head coach (and de facto defensive coordinator) Sean McDermott?

Obviously it's an electric time for Sabres fans, whether you're a diehard who's suffered through the years of being inept or new on the scene freshly on the bandwagon. Good luck going to a bar or restaurant for a Sabres playoff game without it being packed, or not having to compete at Dicks's Sporting Goods or other retail stores where Sabres merch is flying off the shelves. Don't get us wrong---this is all amazing not to mention long overdue, but does it say anything negative about the fan base along the way? To be fair, getting a Sabres ticket in March or April in recent years in the secondary market has been cheaper than going to the movies. The guys attempt to have a nuanced discussion without pissing off fans while doing so, very unlikely of course.

Also, Buffalo fans are letting Boston sports fans absolutely have it recently on Twitter following the Sabres dismantling of the Bruins in the first round of the playoffs, plus several other Boston teams struggling this year. Is it all in good fun or a petty look? Maybe, it's both.

Chris has been around the NFL media in various capacities for a number of years and just this past week signed on to lead SB Nation's Buffalo Bills section, Buffalo Rumblings. Chris discusses the process of getting the job and how he plans on bringing his creativity and connections to help further along what's been a very good resource of news and entertainment for Bills fans.

One of the biggest offseason stories for the Bills, of course was the firing of head coach Sean McDermott and promotion of Joe Brady. One of the most important moves Brady made was hiring Jim Leonhard as his defensive coordinator. Chris reflects back a few months on Brady's decision and how he feels about the various personnel pieces Buffalo has added to the defense and how he expects these guys to contribute.

Obviously that includes a recent draft class that saw the first two and six of the first eight Bills selections come on the defensive side of the ball. Chris talks about why he liked Kalem Elarms-Orr as much as he did before the draft, some of the things he's looking forward to shaking out now that he's covering the team full-time and plenty more.

The draft created some favorable and subsequent less favorable momentum for certain prospects themselves or certain veterans currently on the roster. The guys discuss some of the Bills biggest draft winners and why they are, including a pair of veteran defensive tackles, Kaleb Elarms-Orr, a defensive back free agent addition, the likely QB 2and the defensive coordinator, Jim Leonhard.

Conversely, the draft may not have been good news for third year wide receiver Keon Coleman despite the recent onslaught of positive publicity. It also may not be the best for last year's number one draft pick Max Hairston. Also, Jalon Kilgore's drafting could be bad news for either Damar Hamlin or Geno Stone, Javon Solomon's chances of having a path to be an impactful edge rusher took a hit and wondering if there's a lack of confidence in offensive lineman Tylan Grable.

The Sabres scored a power play goal (wow!!!) less than four minutes into the game but couldn't get a puck past Jeremy Swayman the rest of the night. The guys talk about an offense that went stagnant for a lot of reasons, ranging from Tage Thompson having a bad game to the Ryan McLeod line struggling and perhaps the most concerning thing to come from this game, a Noah Ostlund ankle injury that could result in the talented rookie being done for the playoffs. This means a returning Josh Norris is really going to have to step up for Buffalo going forward.

Despite not getting it done, Steve tells us why he's still confident the Sabres will advance, and thinks Lindy Ruff will go back to Alex Lyon between the pipes in game six in Boston on Friday night.

The Bills traded down three times and ultimately out of the first round but that doesn't mean Buffalo's draft wasn't eventful. In fact, quite the opposite. It seems there's a wide ranging perspective on how the Bills went about their process and if nothing else, a slight trade up for a cornerback in the second round was certainly eye opening and if not a shocker.

Patrick goes through each pick Buffalo made and tries to explain what he liked, what he didn't like and what he would've done with each pick were he the one making the call. Like probably many of you, Patrick felt the Bills sweet spot of the draft was the fourth and fifth rounds and in fact, thinks a few of the day three picks could end up being the best selections when we look back at this draft in a few years.

Also, Patrick shares of a few of his favorite picks around the NFL from each of the seventh rounds. That plus the Sabres are close to advancing in the Stanley Cup playoffs and plenty more!

Last Thursday the Sabres took back home ice advantage with a 3-1 win in Boston. On Sunday they took a stranglehold on the series. Buffalo didn't just beat Boston, they embarrassed them on their home ice, 6-1 in a game that showed Buffalo's clearly the superior talented team. The guys discuss the excitement of just being one game away from a second round meeting with either Tampa Bay or Montreal.

Meanwhile another NFL Draft has come and come and Brandon Beane made seven trades, including six that had them moving back. In the end Buffalo ended up selecting nine players and the guys have plenty of thoughts on each of them, what they liked and disliked the most from this draft, where they think the Bills roster stands after the draft, what moves may still be out there to come and much more.

Many thought the Bills could go defensive tackle or linebacker with their first (35) but Brandon Beane pulled the trigger on edge rusher TJ Paker of Clemson. It's not that the selection of a defensive edge is shocking by any means, but in Parker they showed without question that they prefer a specific prototype at the postion.

If Parker wasn't shocking, the second pick of the round certainly was---Ohio State cornerback Davison Igbinosun. Patrick picks his jaw up from the floor to discuss.

Folks, this Sabres win was all about the additions to the lineup that weren't on the ice in the first two games. Noah Ostlund was fantastic in setting up a goal and putting the final nail in Boston with an empty netter, while Alex Lyon was absolutely brilliant in net minus one shot.  They helped overcome a terrible Sabres power play yet again and bad third penalties from two of their biggest stars, Tage Thompson and Rasmus Dahlin,. The guys talk about the good, bad and ugly of a win that wrestles home ice advantage back to Buffalo.

As for the Bills, they got on the clock at 26 and decided to trade down two spots with Houston. Then another three with New England. Then another four and out of the first round entirely with Tennessee. So the Bills don't end up with a first round pick but improve their draft stock, semi significantly over the final six rounds. The guys have several opinions about it and much more.

Before launching the mock Patrick explains what his biggest dilemma for the Bills is this year----need versus value. There's little question that when you look up future contracts based on today's market that wide receiver and edge rusher are two premium positions the Bills could address first and both would be perfectly wise. However, when looking at the current state of the roster and past year January performances you can make a sound argument that improving at stopping the run should be of the utmost importance, and a stout defensive tackle and linebacker are the team's biggest draft needs.

But what happens if popular mock pick and nearby Rochester native wide receiver KC Concepcion happens to be on the board at 26? Do you add another weapon that some experts consider as perhaps the next Stefon Diggs minus the off-field drama?

One thing's for sure---Patrick's very open coming into the draft to trading down, as it makes sense in so many ways. He explains precisely what his goal with that is, who'd he be disappointed with in the first round and much more.

Following a scoreless first period where the Sabres got away with playing leaky, they weren't as fortunate in the second. Boston scored three goals including one of those softest goals you'll see to give them a two goal cushion and confidence. They chased UPL early in the third period and the Sabres now go into game three in Boston tied 1-1.

The guys talk about a power play that continues to stink, too many giveaways, lousy on faceoffs, bad penalties and quite frankly, bad goaltending after the first 2o minutes doing them in.

Weeks if not months of rumors and speculation are just about over as we head into draft week and like many of you, Patrick's probably changed his mind about how some things will play out dozens of times. However, it's pretty much put up or shut up time and Patrick has landed on some Bills draft factors he feels pretty comfortable predicting. Among them is admittedly still completely undecided on if the Bills will take a wide receiver early in the draft but confident enough to predict if they take one anytime in the first three rounds that Keon Coleman will be a former Bill by the end of the weekend.

Also, offensive tackle isn't a need right now, but Patrick explains why he thinks you can still a prospect selected there as easy as round three.

The Sabres looked like toast after falling down 2-0 in the third period and lacked energy, which trickled some into the crowd. But Tage Thompson literally changed that with two goals to tie it before Mattias Samuelsson netted the go ahead goal and Alex Tuch gave them insurance (they'd need) with an empty net goal in a nice play by Thompson.

The guys talk about the good, bad and ugly of the game which of course there was plenty of all it. What matters most is the Sabres take game one of the series. Plenty to talk about!

Going into the mock Patrick reveals that his goal is to trade down from Buffalo's 26th overall pick, with the goal of picking up a day two pick without moving too far out range to get one of a handful of players he's hoping to land. However, it takes two to tango and when he's on the block for Buffalo at 26 there's no good offers from other teams. So Patrick is forced to stand pat at 26 and weights a difficult decision between Ohio State defensive tackle Kayden McDonald and a small handful of high potential edge rushers.

Ultimately Patrick goes with McDonald and explains why, hoping to land an edge in the third round at pick No. 91 but all his guys are gone again there, forcing him to pivot off what he originally said. He does get what he considers a gift in the fourth round in a talented linebacker and takes an intriguing offensive tackle with one of his fifth round picks.

After a corner later in the fifth and safety in the sixth, Patrick ends his mock for a second straight time by selecting a-----kicker.  Before leaving Patrick shares his honest assessment of his mock and why he likes this one better than his first.

Other positions are certainly in play for the Bills with their first overall pick in this draft including linebacker, defensive tackle and wide receiver, but Patrick has landed on it being most likely their going to take an edge rusher early. That sent him into studying mode to learn more about the pool of top prospects and he learned plenty about the seven most likely candidates for the Bills to pull the trigger on---on the premise that David Bailey, Rueben Bain Jr and Arvell Reese are all long gone well before the Bills would be on the clock.

Patrick goes over what he's read and seen both good and bad about these prospects, including Keldric Faulk, TJ Walker, Akheem Mesidor, Cashius Howell, Malachi Lawrence, Zion Young and R Mason Thomas.

At least in the eyes of Patrick, Bills general manager Brandon Beane has done enough with the additions of DJ Moore, Bradley Chubb and CJ Gardner Johnson among others that there isn't one specific glaring need for them at the top of the draft--which to some extent may allow the team to simply take the best player available regardless of (some) positions.  However, when you take a deeper look at the roster, there's certainly areas that are lacking much if any kind of real depth behind the expected starters.

The guys discuss some of these positions, including linebacker, defensive edge, boundary cornerback and offensive tackle.

They also go over why it would be very surprising to see the Bills address certain positions in the draft anytime before the mid-to-late rounds, those positions including running back, tight end, interior offensive line and safety.

Usually when the draft is this close there seems to be a bigger buzz with the Bills than what we've seen so far. In fact, at least to Patrick it's felt like a pretty low key offseason for the Bills despite making a handful of extremely notable additions like DJ Moore, Bradley Chubb and CJ Gardner Johnson.  The guys discuss why it kind of feels that way, perhaps in part because this draft prospect pool in itself in the later first round doesn't feel as buzzworthy as it usually does.

Of course, the Sabres have completely won the attention if not hearts of most Buffalo sports fans over the past few months and that definitely plays a role in it as well.  Buffalo's down to their final two games and controls their destiny to win the Atlantic division going into the playoffs, which speaking of Joe shares some of his favorite Sabres playoff memories.

The Sabres needed to a victory over Tampa in regulation to keep a strong chance of winning the Atlantic Division on the table, and that's exactly what they did. The guys talk about another strong UPL performance, critically needed offensive production from Alex Tuch, Josh Norris and Jason Zucker as well as a third line defensive pairing that felt questionable before the game but got the job done.

Bills general manager spoke to the media on Monday and shortly thereafter made an appearance on Pat MacAfee.  There's plenty for the guys to react from among things Beane discussed, including the Bills officially exercising the fifth-year option on Dalton Kincaid's contract, ensuring the tight end will be here for at least two more years and with a guaranteed $8.1 million salary for 2027. Do the guys agree this move was a no brainer?

Also, even after trading for DJ Moore, Beane said that potentially taking a wide receiver in the first round of the draft with the 26th pick was still on the table. He also said that he's had conversations with free agent wide receiver Brandin Cooks but the team and Cooks will both likely to see how the draft for Buffalo and other teams fall before either makes a decision about him possibly coming back.

Just saying the Sabres are readying to embark on a playoff run is amazing given where this team was at in early December not to mention the previous 14 seasons. They're not exactly "struggling" either as the season winds down but in the interest of staying objective, there's a handful of things going on that could be concerning. Terrel Bernard is a starting off ball linebacker, dictated by the contract he signed before the 2025 season and enforced by the Bills lack of additions to the room so far this offseason. While it's not mathematically locked in yet, the Sabres are going to break their historic 14-year NHL playoff drought within the next few weeks. Buffalo currently leads Tampa in the Atlantic division (though Tampa has two games in hand) and are only one point back of Carolina for most points in the conference. Regardless if the Sabres win the conference and/or division or not, one thing Sabres fans have been saved from is the anxiety of a playoff spot race. Buffalo's torrid place has them a full tier above several other teams in the conference and that's a good thing of course, because the East is just a slop with a half dozen teams within three points of being in the playoffs or out entirely. Montreal, Columbus, Pittsburgh, Boston, New York Islanders and Columbus are all stacked near each other with points, not to mention Ottawa still having a fair shot at getting in as well.

The guys talk about while there's the pressure of trying to get a high seed and home ice advantage, at least they can enjoy the next few weeks without having to worry about making the playoffs.

Most wrestling fans know what the terms "getting the rub" and "go away heat" mean. Today's first part focuses primarily on what the Bills no longer have. The Sabres have been the best team in the NHL over the past three-plus months, literally. They're best in the league in points, goals scored, goal differential, save percentage and percentage of time playing with a lead. It's seriously mind blowing. The guys talk about how this team has somehow been able to put together a prolonged stretch of Sabres hockey that has fans as excited about this team as they've been in at least the past 20 years.

Buffalo embarks on a four game western swing this week that could ultimately have serious ramifications on where they finish in the standings. The Sabres are (unofficially) locked into the playoff but with seven of their final 11 games at home, having a good road trip keeps them in serious play for winning the Atlantic division and perhaps even the Eastern conference.

When healthy, Chubb is a dynamic run defending edge with plenty of pass rushing juice. That said, he's torn both his ACLs throughout his eight year career and it continues a trend of Beane signing big named defenders with significant injury histories in his attempts to help get the Buffalo defense over the hump. The guys give their thoughts on the Chubb signing and if they think Beane did the right thing or is once again playing with fire.

Prefacing by saying this episode is being recorded the morning before a release---typically a big no-no during a busy week like the start of NFL free agency, Patrick has plenty to say about the Bills before leaving to travel. Among the topics is starting to realize that the Bills may be counting on some younger guys on defense to be factors more than fans are---a list that could include Dorian Williams, Jordan Hancock and TJ Sanders. He never received the contract he was hoping for in the last year of his deal and that could've been a distraction for him in the team. At least as of late into Tuesday night, the Bills have only added cornerback Dee Alford and backup quarterback Kyle Allen to the roster externally with a market that's quickly drying up. Sure, they've already traded for DJ Moore, re-signed Connor McGovern and worked out a deal to keep Dawson Knox and that's meaningful of sure, but Patrick's already mighty frustrated at Brandon Beane seeming to be a little too content with personnel on the defensive side of the ball, at least so far.

One major name being connected to the Bills is edge rusher Trey Hendrickson. However, with the Max Crosby trade falling apart for Baltimore, Patrick thinks it's a formality that Baltimore ends up with Hendrickson, possibly even by the time you listen to this.

Meanwhile, the Sabres remain an absolute wagon as they defeated San Jose in front of an excited Key Bank Center crowd, improving to a perfect 8-0 since the Olympic break. That and plenty more today!

Prior to Monday's start of unofficial free agency the Bills had already pulled off a trade for wide receiver DJ Moore in addition to re-signing center Connor McGovern to a lucrative extension over the weekend. Therefore, it shouldn't be surprising that the Bills didn't make any kind of real splash on Monday. They did add Atlanta slot cornerback Dee Alford to the team as well as bringing back former quarterback (and Josh Allen buddy) Kyle Allen and re-signing punter Mitch Wishnowsky. Patrick has opinions on all three moves.

The Bills, as expected did lose some veterans to other teams on Monday. Patrick has thoughts on guard David Edwards going to the New Orleans Saints, Mitch Trubisky to the Tennesssee Titans and the New England Patriots poaching fullback Reggie Gilliam away, something that Patrick's admittedly bothered by.

He also discusses some of the biggest moves around the league in what was a very (very) active and eventful day, including Mike Evans off to San Francisco, Tyler Linderbaum blowing up the center market and John Franklin Myers heading to Tennessee. That and plenty more.

NFL free agency, or at least the "legal tampering period" starts here on Monday and the Bills certainly got a decent amount of holes to fill on the roster. A less than ideal amount of cap room coupled with a plethora of needs both with starters and depth will force Beane and his staff to be at his best starting today and over the next few months. The guys discuss some of those roster holes the Bills have to work on and what some solutions may ultimately lead to being.

They also react to a trio of big Bills news items that've went on over the past handful of days leading into the start of free agency: trading for DJ Moore, cutting cornerback Taron Johnson and re-signing center Connor McGovern over the weekend.

For fun, they also play a game of trying to guess the next team several of their recently released and pending free agent Bills end up with.

Of course, the Sabres remain steaming hot and won what could be argued as one of the greatest games in franchise history on Sunday night. The guys talk about them and much more.

To say the immediate reaction among Bills fans, media and content creators is a mixed bag is an understatement, and Patrick thinks there's plenty to like about the move as well as a few things that certainly give him pause.

First and foremost, Moore immediately becomes the Bills best pass catching option in the intermediate to long yard situations and it's not close either. He comes to Buffalo with plenty of proven success as he turns 29 years old this week including four seasons of over 1,000 yards receiving. Two of those, by the way came with Bills head coach back when Brady was offensive coordinator in Carolina in 2020-21.  Also, while Moore may not be definition a "true No. 1" receiver, Patrick thinks more of his ability than had the Bills signed Romeo Doubs or Rashid Shaheed in free agency, who felt more like extensions of Curtis Samuel and Josh Palmer types.

However, this isn't a win for the Bills without some issues. Giving up a second-round pick for a guy who's had consecutive down years feels risky, not to mention the guaranteed money they're giving him that essentially makes his contract a three-year deal worth $74 million that's pretty much all guaranteed now. Also, there's at least a handful of clips out there that show Moore's effort when not being targeted has been less than stellar in the past.

That plus if Patrick feels this was the right deal to make, does Beane deserve praise or heat for this move and plenty more from the reaction department.

The vibes were immaculate at the Key Bank Center in Buffalo the other night before the Sabres took on Vegas as Tage Thompson was honored by the organization for helping the United States win a gold medal. The crowd gave him a thunderous applause (as well as Jack Eichel) and the electricity carried over into the game, as Tage scored a goal and Buffalo would hold on to beat Vegas to win their fourth in a row since coming back from the Olympic break.

The Sabres aren't slowing down and the league is noticing. More and more people are talking about the Sabres as not only a team poised to end their historic playoff drought but a team that can win multiple series in the playoffs. The guys talk about the team, the fans that have been yearning to have something to get behind again, trade rumors involving Buffalo and some prominent players around the league in advance of Friday's deadline and more.

On the football side, it appears Pierce can test the open market if he chooses. The Bills certainly have limitations, at least that's the way Brandon Beane portrays it again, but in football you can always take a big swing if you really want to. Should the Bills use that on Pierce---a guy who will surely get overpaid in the open market but still fits the Bills biggest offensive need like a glove?  Also, it looks like the Bills are set to lose both David Edwards and Connor McGovern in free agency---how worried should we be about the offensive line? That and plenty more!

Understandably so, the wide receiver position attracts the most attention among fans and the media. There's certainly a need to add to the position and Buffalo will, but there's plenty of room and need to add talent to several if not most other positions.

The guys go through them, talk about needs are bigger than other and discuss a handful of potential pending free agents, trade candidates and draft prospects for each. Some positions, like edge rusher and safety seem pretty clear but others, such as offensive tackle and running back could be a bit more of a mystery.

It's not a done yet but the Sabres find themselves in incredibly well position to end their historic 14-year playoff drought. Their 24-5-2 record over their past 31 games has them and us as consumers thinking that just ending the drought isn't the end of their story for this season. During the NFL Combine this week, Beane when speaking to the media described himself as being aggressive, sometimes even needing coworkers on the Bills staff to reel him back a little bit. Is that actually true? Is Beane really that aggressive? The guys dig into that and other than three instances since 2018 don't really agree with the Bills general manager.

Also, a recurring theme emerging this offseason (again) seems to be Beane and new Bills head coach Joe Brady jumping in to talk about how much Josh Allen's contract effects the Bills. While that is indisputably true, there's plenty of other Beane roster decisions with bad contracts and/or dead cap hits that could wreck havoc on their chances to get some of the things done they're hoping for.

The guys also wonder (sort of) if the Bills could take a look at Stefon Diggs if he ends up released by the New England Patriots. That plus the Buffalo Sabres are going scorched earth right now and more.

There's definitely reasons we can see a Cooks reunion with the club in 2026 and Patrick admits the reasons to feel like it works are more than why it wouldn't. From the inexpensive cap hit to his track record, skill set in particular his ability to get open plenty for Buffalo last year and to having a "lesser than" role in the wide receiver room going forward, there's plenty of justification on bringing him back.

But Patrick lands on no and it's for one reason but a big one----you simply can't trust him. Cooks had major issues during his short time with Buffalo holding onto the football and completing catches, a major reason he had just 10 completions in 22 targets with the Bills. While you can say he'd be a bottom of the depth chart player and that seems harmless, the reality is when you're on the depth chart you're going to see the field, especially at wide receiver. When Cooks runs routes he tends to get open which means he'll get the football and that's where the problem lies--Patrick simply thinks you can't trust him to make the big play that could determine the outcome of a game or as we saw in the playoffs, literally the season.  For that reason alone Patrick thinks it's a bad idea to bring him back.

Also, the Jets and Titans made a straight player for player trade on Thursday that got Patrick thinking of four current Bills players he could see as candidates for something similar happening. That and much more.

The Sabres haven't made the NHL playoffs in 14 years. They're desperately trying to make that not reach 15 years. Buffalo returns to action on Wednesday night in New Jersey following the Olympic break and they do so with a five point advantage in the Eastern conference wild card race, with just two points between them and Montreal and Detroit in the Atlantic division.  Nothing's been accomplished yet but opportunity definitely knocks. The guys discuss the Sabres performance through this point of the season and the dramatic turnaround that has rightfully has fans finally excited about this team again.

They also discuss the lift that Josh Norris will give them being back in the lineup and hopefully Zach Benson not far behind. That's expected to change literally any day now, so Patrick and Joe go over a lengthy list of things they predict will happen, including each going over their boldest Bills offseason prediction.

In this mock Patrick explains while not happy about it, goodbyes need to happen to David Edwards and Dawson Knox. In terms of the receiving room Patrick thinks it's time for the bigger possession type of receivers need to end and bring back to the Stefon Diggs, John Brown, Cole Beasley type of pass catchers Josh Allen has historically worked best.  Of course that means change and Patrick uses a significant free agent resource on receiver in addition to his first pick in the draft.

On the defensive side of the ball, no "huge names" are added but with Jim Leonhard taking over the defense, Patrick finds not one, not two but three Denver Broncos free agents into the fold in addition to another defensive heavy draft. It's necessary because there's a huge personnel turnover on this side of the ball.

The Bills wide receiver outside of Khalil Shakir stinks. That's not particularly a nice thing to say nor is fun to think about, but those are the facts. Curtis Samuel could get cut by the time you read this and the rest of the room is filled with guys they're either stuck with and/or uncertain about. Needless to say, there's going to multiple new players in that room in 20206.

The guys discuss several of them, starting with free agents such as Alec Pierce, Rasheed Shaheed, Mike Evans, Jauan Jennings, Romeo Doubs and Deebo Samuel (yes I know, ugh). Perhaps acquiring one via trade is the correct path despite the additional compensatory cost. Guys such as AJ Brown, Brian Thomas Jr, Chris Olave, Michael Wilson and DJ Moore are all discussed.

Winds of change are definitely coming for the Bills, fresh off the firing of Sean McDermott and subsequent promotion of Joe Brady, with Brandon Beane clearly feeling the heat to orchestrate a roster capable of getting over the playoff wall owner Terry Pegula recently spoke of. For starters the Bills have 20 pending unrestricted free agents with many of them on the defensive side of the ball. The guys go over each player and discuss whether there should/will be an interest in bringing them back, as it quickly becomes apparent there's going to be a pretty significant roster overhaul coming our way.

They also discuss the level of aggressiveness Beane needs to have this offseason, unless of course it's going to turn into another Terry Pegula and Kevyn Adams situation where perhaps the GM seat isn't nearly as hot as most of us think it should be.

Turning over the to the Sabres side, the guys discuss Tage Thompson and Rasmus Dahlin on a collision course to face each other in the knockout round at the Olympics, with Patrick openly admitting he cares about them staying healthy a lot more than what nation wins Olympic gold. That's because the Sabres return on February 25th with 25 games to go and a five point lead in the Eastern conference wild card race. The guys talk about their daunting schedule upon their return, what moves the Sabres may make before the March 6 trade deadline, are they prepared to let Alex Tuch simply become a rental type of player and much more.

This weekend was Valentine's Day so naturally Joe, an unapologetic (or simply in denial) cynic was inspired by the holiday and recent Bills loss to remember the biggest heartbreak the franchise has ever had. They discuss some of the best known debacles like wide right, 13 seconds, music city miracle, this year's Brandin Cooks' no catch and Jim Kelly's sad ending to a Hall of Fame career. But Joe has others in the tank that may make you grimace in pain.

Also, significant sports media news in the Buffalo market dropped this past week as Tim Graham and Brad Riter were announced to at least temporarily hold the 1-3pm slot on WGR 550. The guys got plenty of opinions on that and if they think it will eventually turn into a regular thing.

The Bills added 71-year old John Fox to the coaching staff as a senior assistant to Joe Brady. Predictably the guys have differing opinions on it. That and tons more.

Kimble recently won the Connolly Cup, given to Western New York's top high school football player and in doing so became the first player ever from Canisius to win in the 53-year history of the award. He's also the first player from any school ever to be a finalist for the award in each of his first three seasons.

His stats at Canisius have been mind blowing, he's ran for 5,325 yards already through three years, the most all-time in Monsignor Martin Association history and he's fourth all-time in Western New York with a still a full season left to play, just 1,234 from the top spot.

Kimble isn't just some high school phenom, he' literally the most highly recruited running back to ever come out of Western New York. He's already received north of 35 major D1 offers and recently narrowed his list down to a final 10, a group that includes Ohio State, Michigan, Indian, Miami, Florida, Washington, Kansas and Syracuse.

Perhaps most impressively, he's an absolute humble and class act student athlete and young man. Patrick has a thorough discussion about his life, career to this point, goals and much, much more.

Thad has been on TV working in WROC in Rochester for over 25 more years, most of it in sports and of course covering the Bills. It's Thad's first time back on this podcast since 2019 and Patrick asks him a few Bill and sports media questions to get the conversation going before they dive into Bills talk.

First they start with four things that definitely went very well for Buffalo over this past season, including James Cook taking a leap from pretty damn good running to back to NFL's leading rusher, an influx of strong contributions from "old" guys on the defense they probably weren't counting on for much, Cole Bishop's big leap in year two and a ton of flashed potential from rookie defensive tackle Deone Walker.

Of course, turnabout is fair play and they also discuss four things that went terribly wrong for Buffalo this season. That includes them being a turnover machine compared to 2024, a wide receiver room that was mostly a disaster, big ticket defensive lineman no showing the playoffs and now former head coach Sean McDermott pushing the wrong buttons again at crucial points of a playoff elimination game.

Having season previews and prediction episodes before a season starts is always fun. It's Joe's first time back on the show in three weeks and whole lot has went down with the Bills since they've last spoke on the air.  That includes Sean McDermott being fired, Brandon Beane being both retained and promoted, the wild Beane/Terry Pegula press conference, a head coaching search that culminated in the promotion of Joe Brady to head coach and a bunch of new coaches to the staff. Joe shares his thoughts on many of these things while Patrick puts thoughts into if he thinks that public opinion has changed on these moves from the time they happened until now.

Also, significant news in the Buffalo sports media world came down late last week when the Bills (and Sabres) announced their relationship with WGR-550 as the teams flagship station is coming to an end. One of the biggest sentiments and criticisms around Brady as an offensive coordinator has been his inability to have receivers play a consistently prominent role in in the passing game, especially on deeps plays down the field. Patrick elaborates why the late season addition of Cooks proved that theory wrong, as Cooks was schemed (wide) open down the field plenty, he simply rarely made the play, including of course the Denver overtime nightmare. It has Patrick finally on the "wide receiver" train that others have been on for quite some time.

Also, who are a few of the guys the Bills could target this offseason? AJ Brown is widely speculated and Patrick's been talking about Brian Thomas Jr for several months, but how about Tyreek Hill? Someone in the Podbag even brings up Tee Higgins.

One thing that seems certain, at least to Patrick is that Keon Coleman is never going to be that guy, so he explains why he'd trade him now.  That plus Joey Bosa is likely done in Buffalo, a pessimist Bills fan chimes in and a Sabres fan (think he's a fan?) warns to not get carried away with the team until they win a playoff game.

Leonhard help court with the media for an extended period on Thursday and definitely had a few sound bytes as some of his core principles were being discussed, including being aggressive but also being aggressive without it becoming reckless. Leonhard also went on about he's been his best coaching guys who don't fit into a specific box or role and can be versatile on his defense.

Patrick came away from the scrum extremely impressed and shares why, including the contrasting styles between Leonhard and McDermott that led to a Floyd Mayweather versus Thomas Hearns boxing analogy.

All season long the guys have gotten together to discuss the Bills previous game position by position with Matt assigning a grade for each. Obviously there's no more games to break down in that style so this is being turned into a season long evaluation of each position---the good, bad and ugly.

Some positions certainly turned out to be pleasant surprises. For example who suspected the tight end room would be one of the biggest strengths on the team even with Dalton Kincaid missing time? Or how about Tre White holding down the cornerback spot alongside Christian Benford all season not just admirably (not admiral) but straight up excellent?

It wasn't all good though. The defensive line's play was marred by two key injuries, other nagging injuries and a lot of inconsistent play outside of Greg Rousseau. Of course, perhaps the most intriguing position to discuss is quarterback. By almost any other QB's standard Allen had a stellar season, but coming off his MVP campaign of a year ago, will Matt grade him with a curve? All that and tons more.

The Bills have been a perennial contender in the AFC since 2019, reaching two conference championship games during that span. But continuing to hit the "proverbial playoff wall" that owner Terry Pegula discussed led to the firing of longtime head coach Sean McDermott and while it hasn't been publicly stated, puts enormous pressure on Beane to make moves this offseason that's going to help them get over the hump because with McDermott gone, failure will (rightfully) fall squarely on Beane going forward.

To that point Patrick comes up with five questions that Beane's surely asking himself right now and getting ready to make tough decisions on. Among them is if there's truly a place on the 2026 roster for Keon Coleman that is anything but a negative, who among the offensive line depth is ready to step up and become starters with the probability that at least one if not two incumbent starters will leave for free agency, does Brady lean on Beane to pull of a trade for an alpha WR No. 1 and did Dawson Knox play himself into another year with the club?
