ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula has urged supporters to remain loyal to the party even when it disappoints them, in the same way Kaizer Chiefs fans stand by their team through defeats.

“Kaizer Chiefs supporters don’t abandon their team when it is beaten,” Mbalula said during a door-to-door campaign in ward 24 at Freedom Park in Soweto before a by-election set for May 14.

“Even if they lost yesterday, the fans still have hope. What I love about Chiefs supporters is their loyalty. They’re resolute. You [ANC supporters] must be the same. We will fix it [ANC].”

Mbalula, known for controversial speeches, told residents the ANC is committed to rebuilding and delivering change where it governs.

“We must work for the people. Where we govern, things must change. It must be visible that the ANC is in charge and we are making progress.”

The campaign comes at a crucial time for the party, which lost its majority in the 2024 general elections after three decades of dominance.

Warning about what he called external threats to its survival, Mbalula rallied supporters to defend the ANC at the polls.

“We must defend this freedom. It’s tough out there, the enemy is after us. If there is no ANC, who will defend us? The enemy wants to destroy the ANC. Let’s show them on May 14 we’re not going anywhere.”

The by-election is one of several tests of the ANC’s grassroots support as it battles to reclaim lost ground in municipalities in Gauteng.

A crime analyst has warned that if crooks are let off the hook over protection money extortion they may even take over the state.

Last week concerning news of protection money being extorted from vulnerable individuals and businesses in Mthatha made headlines.

In Kraaifontein, Cape Town, a pensioner selling food on the street was shot dead for refusing to pay protection money.

Independent crime analyst Dr Chris De Kock says there should be strict application of the law. “If this thing carries on, we can easily slide into the type of situation that you have in Haiti, where gangs and criminals literally take over even the state. If we don’t want to go there, we will have to fight all these organised criminals.”

Former EFF deputy president Floyd Shivambu says he is not in the business of pleasing the egos of those who feel betrayed.

Shivambu was announced as the MK Party's national organiser on Thursday at the party’s media briefing.

He spoke to the media for the first time after his departure from the party he helped start. Shivambu said the opposition should put aside their “very strong egos”.

“We should unite all the progressive forces into a common agenda because this thing of small parties [is] not sustainable for the future of black people in South Africa. When you have multiple of these, they end up being fiefdoms of individuals.”

Earlier this week EFF leader Julius Malema addressed his party members in Gauteng after Shivambu’s shock exit, and repeatedly said the party had been “confronted by betrayal of our struggle for economic freedom in exchange for personal gains”, telling prominent members to speak up during the party’s “testing moment”.

The silence of popular EFF members during former deputy leader Floyd Shivambu's resignation has irritated party leader Julius Malema.

Malema read a section of the party’s constitution which obliges members not to be silent when the organisation is being “attacked”.

Malema’s rant comes after Shivambu defected to Jacob Zuma’s MK Party. Shivambu and MP Mzwanele Manyi resigned last week.

It's expected that other party members could also leave.

Leaders who are usually vocal but who have been silent about the latest developments since Shivambu’s departure include Dali Mpofu, who is associated with Zuma as his advocate, and Mbuyiseni Ndlozi. There have been rumours that they are among those who intend to leave the EFF.
