He offers you a magical gift: a silver apple branch that emits music so sweet it sends the hearer into blissful sleep. You accept the branch in exchange for three wishes, to be granted to the stranger in the future. You revel in the powers of the branch, but when the stranger returns, you find that his price is far too high. You pursue the stranger to his otherworldly domain to reclaim what is yours. In turn, you discover a wisdom greater than any magical object.

Explore the interconnectedness of the realm in tonight’s medieval fantasy bedtime story.

In tonight’s story, you are the last true elf in the fantasy realm of Brenindor. The kingdom is on the precipice of seismic change, and you alone have a long enough memory to understand the implications of what happens next. You muse on the history of the realm and your role in its future, until some unexpected guests stumble into your domain: the sworn rivals for Brenindor’s throne. Ends with a meditation for grounding and deep sleep.

This story is connected to the ongoing tales of Brenindor found in other installments of Sleep & Sorcery, such as The Dragon Rider, The Heir Apparent, and The Sleeping Hero. Follow the thread of memory through a nostalgic corn maze in tonight’s folklore-inspired bedtime story.

In tonight’s story, as the first chilly winds of autumn blow in, you and your friends revisit your favorite fall tradition: a local farm with a seasonal pumpkin patch, hayrides, and a corn maze. You decide to challenge your friends to see who can make it through the corn maze the fastest. As evening falls and you wander the corridors of the maze, you muse on the folklore of the season, labyrinths, and the unexpected twists of life. Here and there, throughout the maze, you run into people from your past, though you struggle to place them: until you realize that they are younger versions of you.

Travel to the land of 8-bit adventure in tonight’s folklore inspired sleep story.

In tonight’s story, you are the owner of a beloved local video game arcade. One day, you receive a delivery of a vintage game cabinet – a game you’ve somehow never heard of. What’s more, the cabinet doesn’t work, and so it gathers dust in the corner of the arcade while you figure out what to do with it. Until one night, the game suddenly powers up by itself, enticing you to play. In your playthrough, you discover an Easter Egg – which turns out to be much more than that. It’s a doorway into a world of 8-bit adventure, of which you are the hero.

In tonight’s Southern Gothic-inspired sleep story, you receive an invitation to a mysterious gathering at the home of a prominent resident of your town. Once a year, she hosts an intimate, late-night get-together to celebrate the rare and brief blooming of a beloved flower: the night-blooming cereus, also known as the Queen of the Night. You join the moonlit revel to witness the unfurling of the flower, which beckons you into nature’s great mystery.

There is no formal meditation at the end of this story, but it does contain some meditation and breathing cues, which you can follow if you like – or simply let the words wash over you.

Exchange gifts with the goddess of the Crossroads in tonight’s mythology-inspired bedtime story.

In tonight’s story, as you contemplate your place in a changing world, you witness a procession of torch-bearing spirits in the night. You follow them to the Crossroads at the edge of town, a liminal place that’s rich with folklore. There, at the center of three forking paths, a garden blooms from nothing, and the goddess of the Crossroads appears. You ask her for guidance in choosing a path forward.

You may find the auditory experience of this story a little different from other installments of Sleep & Sorcery. I’ve included some more experimental techniques, like vocal layering and ASMR unintelligible whispers, and it includes original channeled poetry and built-in visualization exercises. I hope you find it an especially relaxing listen.

In tonight’s story, you are the long lost heir to the throne of the powerful kingdom of Brenindor. After years of not knowing your true identity, you have come into your own, reconnected with your bonded dragon, and set about claiming your inheritance. But without support or connections to the capitol, you find yourself unable to accomplish much. This, however, is all about to change with the arrival of an unexpected ally – who is also your greatest rival for the throne.

This tale is part of an ongoing medieval fantasy narrative set in the same realm across time and space. You don’t need to have heard all the other stories to understand this one, but you may recognize some of the characters and story threads. If you’d like to catch up, I recommend starting with The Dragon Rider or Tales by the Tavern Fire. I hope you enjoy.

In tonight’s story, you are the village healer, a practitioner of natural magic and keeper of a renowned herb garden. Things are changing in the realm, and you are in need of a way to preserve your magical knowledge, so you have recently taken on an apprentice. Together, you work to develop a powerful gem, a container for all the wisdom of your ancestors and plant guides. But through your efforts, you come to realize that wisdom cannot be fixed or contained – it must spread, travel, and age.

This story lives in the same world as the dragon rider, the tavern tales, and the heir apparent from other installments of Sleep & Sorcery – but it takes place several generations in that continuing story’s past. You don’t need to have heard the other installments to enjoy this story, but you may recognize some of the threads woven throughout.

If you’re still awake as the story concludes, I’ll guide you through a relaxing meditation for sleep and self-care.

In tonight’s story, after inheriting a historic estate from an eccentric uncle, you host your first gathering at the country house for Winter Solstice. You celebrate with your new friends and community members, some of whom stay to help you tidy up at the end of the evening. Once the house is back to rights, you wind down by the fire; naturally, someone starts telling stories. As tall, but true tales unfold, you begin to recognize patterns in the sometimes magical or supernatural occurrences in the region – with your historic mansion at the heart.

In tonight’s story, you are an immortal Olympian – a member of the Greek Pantheon. You visit a deserted island where the memories of an ancient past are forever bound in stone. Here, you intend to right the wrongs of your past, makes amends, and to redeem the story of a figure forever remembered as monstrous: Medusa.

This story is a retelling of the classical myths surrounding Medusa and the Gorgons. I’ve taken a number of liberties with the sources to offer an adaptation that fits the tone of Sleep & Sorcery, but some of the themes of this tale may skew a bit mature for younger listeners. In tonight’s story, you are a poor woodcutter who discovers a wounded crane on your way home from the market. You care for the bird, nursing it back to health until it can fly again. Shortly after the crane departs, a woman arrives at your doorstep seeking a place to stay. The woman repays your hospitality with mysterious and seemingly magical gifts, which bring you great wealth. As your fortunes change, you become more and more curious about your house guest – until you discover her connection to the crane you once cared for. This tale is lovingly adapted from the Japanese folktale “The Crane’s Return of a Favor.”

In tonight’s story, you are the mage and most trusted advisor to the king regent. On the day of an auspicious festival, a subject of the kingdom seeks audience with you, hoping to learn some of your magic to heal her village. You hear the lady’s plea, learning more from her than you might have expected, and imparting some magical wisdom of your own. As if in repayment for your kindness, you are then granted a vision of the kingdom’s future.

This story is connected to the Dragon Rider and Tavern tales from previous seasons of Sleep & Sorcery. You don’t need to have heard those stories in full to understand this one, but you may recognize some of the characters and story threads. I hope you enjoy.

In tonight’s story, you are a magician and the master of a mystical island. When shipwreck brings strangers to your shores, you begin to experience strange phenomena – glimpses of another world just beyond your own. Looking to your books of magic for help understanding what’s happening, you discover that you are, in fact, an actor in a play. The island is but a bare stage, and your island bedfellows are castmates. With this realization, you find that you can walk seamlessly between the theatrical and ordinary worlds.

This story takes, as inspiration, William Shakespeare’s The Tempest – with the play as a jumping-off point. I’ve taken some liberties with the characters and story to ensure an original and relaxing adventure. I hope you enjoy.

In tonight’s story, as winter’s bones melt into the softening earth, you rise to wake the first buds and usher a new season across the land. You are the Flower Fairy, the magical herald of spring, taking over for your wintry cousin and rousing the earth from its cold sleep. This is a companion to the Season 3 story “The Frost Fairy,” but you don’t need to have heard that story to enjoy this one.

Sleep & Sorcery is a folklore and fantasy-inspired sleep series. My name is Laurel, and I’ll be your guide on tonight’s fantastical journey. Sleep & Sorcery is one part bedtime story, one part guided meditation, and one part dreamy adventure. Listen to my voice for as long as it serves you, and when you’re ready, feel free to let go of the story and relax into sleep. If you’re still awake as the story comes to an end, I’ll guide you through a body scan for rest and healing.
