Knowing Your Why Isn't Enough

The Model Steward Canvas is a free book about starting a Christian business with a Kingdom Purpose. It’s a one-page business plan which works through the fundamental elements of a business or product, structuring your ideas in an easy-to-understand way. The Model Steward Canvas is for those who:

· Want to start a new business with a Kingdom purpose,

· Want to transition from an informal business to a more formal business with a Kingdom purpose,

· Want to transition from being a Christian in business to a business with a defined and intentional Kingdom purpose,

· Feel God’s call to utilize their professional skills with a Kingdom purpose,

· Have just begun to appreciate that they are stewards of the business God has given them.

The Canvas is a visual chart with twelve elements. It describes the firm’s business, vision and mission, values, customer segments it wishes to serve, customer value proposition, business goals, stakeholders and key partners and resources, and staff management approach. The last elements are its financial approach – pricing and profit and dividend strategies. Of critical importance is the Scriptural Imperative – the verse or passage of Scripture that defines how you conduct your business and interact with your employees, suppliers, and customers.

Dr Ken Long is a business consultant who provides advice to help businesses improve their competitiveness and profitability. He has broad industry experience, having commenced his business career as a lawyer before holding senior management positions in the de-regulating electricity and gas markets and IT commercialization. Ken has also been involved as a senior consultant in developing leadership and management skills with a particular emphasis on business acumen. His business skills include business strategy development, sales and marketing management.

Dr Long developed the concept of the Model Steward Canvas for a program on business, innovation and discipleship that he and Christina Hawkins, then Stewardship Director of the South Pacific Division, delivered to a group of Christian entrepreneurs in Papua and New Guinea in December 2019. The participants loved the concept but were all surprised that the worlds of business and Christianity could be combined, as their understanding was that they should be separate. This book adopts business as mission, the intentional combination or integration of two concepts – business and mission. “The idea of integration is important. This is not ‘ministry’ tacked onto the business for convenience or business tacked onto ministry. Instead, the mission is worked out in and through the business, its activities, products and services and relationships”. The life of the apostle Paul as a professional tentmaker (Acts 18:1-3) demonstrates this concept of integration.

Ken has degrees in Law and Accounting and a Master of Business Administration (Marketing), and a Doctor of Business Administration (organizational innovation).

What the Business World Stole From the Bible

The Hardest Decision I've Ever Made

When Radim Passer got a loan from the bank in 1991, he bought his first property. The rest is history. Since 1996, PasserInvest has primarily been connected with the locality Brumlovka (former BB Centrum) in Prague 4. It is one of the most successful and extensive urban projects not only in the Czech Republic, but in all of Europe from the perspective of development projects built by a single investor. So far, Passerinvest Group has invested almost 16 billion crowns (roughly 691 million USD). 10% of that was invested into non-profit projects that are used by the general public (schools, public greenery, sports facilities and urban infrastructure, safety, ecology).

In this episode, Radim shares his personal journey of how it all started, what struggles he had, how he grew up and what changes he had to make in his business after finding God. A personal tragedy in 1998 changed his family's life forever and was used by God in mighty ways.

Startup or corporate business? Markus Witte knows both. For more than 20 years, he had worked in large corporations as a product manager. He innovated, met with CEOs and CFOs and used large assets to push the enterprise forward. But then he got the call to leave this safe environment and start his own business from scratch. Markus eventually joined Jesse and a few others, and together they founded Hyve.

A corporate business with millions of dollars in revenue looks like a better deal, compared to a startup that struggles to acquire customers. But there are pros and cons in both cases. Pivoting to Success

Monet St Juste and his family had a dream: they wanted to buy a property in Florida, open a lifestyle center and share God's love through the health message in Florida. So they decided to raise money for this lofty goal. $190,000 were needed. But when the campaign was over, they barely reached $1,000.

So Monet and his wife asked God what to do. One woman was in need of a colon cleanser, so the family developed a product from scratch to help her. This eventually resulted in a missional business that changed hundreds of people's lives and allowed the family to open up a lifestyle center - with way more impact than ever thought before.

A Secret Boat Saved His Life

It still seemed like a normal business day on the island of Okinawa for Tim's grandfather. His family had previously fled to the main land because of the war, but he missed them very much. A friend spontaneously told him, "there is a secret boat that leaves our island tonight. Why don't you take it and go to the main land to visit your wife and children? You haven't seen them for so long." So he left his store and took the secret boat a couple of hours later.

Little did Tim's grandfather know that that very night, Japan's WWII opponents would start a devastating bombing attack on Okinawa and entirely level the city and his business. His store was completely destroyed, but his life got saved in miraculous ways.

This story is just one of many that Tim Aka shares during this episode. His grandmother's marvelous ways of doing business, his father's journey as an Adventist pioneer in Japan and his brother's life-changing work as a medical missionary are many others.

He Tripled Our Revenue

When Norbert reached out to Hyve, he just wanted to get some help for his daughter who was struggling with her vegan restaurant. After seeing how God turned that restaurant around within a few months, he didn't hesitate and hired Hyve to coach Hartland's Wellness Center as well.

Up until that point, that wellness center had survived only because of generous donations and money from other sources. People were blessed and healed, but thousands of dollars were lost every single month.

Hyve stepped in. A sales person was coached, the prices were increased and various marketing strategies helped the business to become profitable. Not only that, they tripled their yearly revenue and now host twice as many health guests as before! God truly worked in miraculous ways. But Norbert and his team aren't done yet. Their goal is to keep expanding. This fall, they're starting "Madison 2.0", a program that educates current college students on how to start their own missional businesses.

Learning to Live Dangerously

Born in a ministerial family and saved from death by successive miracles until his third year of life, Marcos Bomfim started his pastoral ministry in 1986 as a district pastor in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Since October 2015, he has been the General Conference Stewardship Ministries director, following his 16 years of work in the Stewardship and the Family Ministries departments at different institutional levels in the South-American Division. Currently a DMin candidate, his educational training includes a Bachelor in Theology, M.A. in Pastoral Theology, and a specialization in Family Therapy.

In this episode, Pastor Bomfim shares what the Bible has to say about stewardship. It is more than just giving X% of your income. Beyond that, he gives us practical and powerful reasons why we should change our paradigm and move towards a more systematic way of giving back to God. He calls that the "promise."

Evangelism Is Broken

When we look at the numbers, we can get disappointed very quickly. Each day, close to 400,000 new babies are born. Yet we only baptize 3,000 new members every day. It looks like we're getting further and further away from finishing the work. Our method of evangelism seems to be broken. How do we solve this problem?

Jesse Zwiker, founder of Hyve, explains. Our model doesn't work because we're trying to do it in our free time. Besides our regular job, family, hobbies and friends. So when our pastor kindly asks again to do some mission work on Sabbath afternoon, we are too tired to join.

But there is a gigantic number of members — 24 million (as of 2022) who are talented, skilled, innovative and motivated to do God's work. Let's get everyone involved! Let's wake up that sleeping giant!

How to Negotiate

In Matthew 5, Jesus told us to be meek. To walk the extra mile. To turn the other cheek. Yet He didn't call us to be a doormat. With this context in mind, negotiating as missional entrepreneurs seems like a difficult thing to do. How can we negotiate as Christians, not compromising on divine principles?

Geeta Chopra explains. She is a TV host, serial entrepreneur, real estate investor, landlord and top negotiator. There are some key elements we can include. By mirroring the last few words the other person speaks, we show empathy. By being silent and pausing long enough to let the other person talk, we show humility and respect. Labeling a high price or a pain point right at the beginning also sets a bench mark for the rest of the conversation. And there is one question you should always ask at the end if you're not quite happy with the way the negotiation went...

How to Reach Your Goals

This week, host Vincent Bujor shares some practical tips on how to reach your goals as a missional entrepreneur.
Back in 1903, Ellen G. White wrote a brilliant piece of literature called "Education." In one of her chapters, she briefly mentions goals as well. And now, almost 120 years later, best-selling books are published that reiterate her inspired words.

Here's how you can practically break down your goals. Formulate a SOMEDAY GOAL, then break it down into a 5-YEAR GOAL, followed by a 1-YEAR GOAL, a MONTHLY GOAL, a WEEKLY GOAL and of course a DAILY GOAL. Instead of looking at the big task and feeling overwhelmed, break it down into little pieces and use the right timing to work on your "ONE Thing" as often as you can. Pausing long enough to plan before you start working is crucial. This method or strategy is extremely helpful if you're aspiring to become a missional entrepreneur but you're still employed and need to start your side hustle. It also works well for your existing missional business - focus more, formulate clear goals for your company and stick to them.

Healing Chronic Wounds

Adventism's Mental Health Network

ADIBE Network is an Adventist community of mental health professionals and coaches. They receive online training before going out and helping others with their thoughts and feelings, treating depression and anxiety. Close to 1,000 people have gone through Jennifer's training program as of May 2022, dozens of active providers (both professionals and lay members) are helping those in need.

God gave her this idea when multiple training requests came in from lay people, and she was reminded of other powerful examples in Zimbabwe and India where non-professionals get trained to treat mental illness in their local communities.

Dealing With Conflict in the Workplace

How do we solve conflict? Is there a good way how to deal with it? What can we do so it doesn't even occur?

Ron Price is the owner of Productive Outcomes, Inc. and helps others address difficult and challenging situations by providing successful and satisfying solutions. He has a Masters Degree in Counseling and speaks for startups, enterprises and churches around the country. In this episode of The Hyve Podcast, he gives us valuable tools how to prevent conflict before it happens:

Push the "pause button." When you're going to work but your day didn't start that well, take some time to push the pause button and relax for a few moments. Remember you're getting paid to deliver results. Don't take your bad mood into your work place!
Assume good intent (AGI). Very often, individuals hurt us without really wanting to do that. A simple statement and question like "That sounded like an attack. Did you really mean it this way...?" helps us discover the true intent behind the action — and usually, the other person did not mean it like this.

Profit is evil. Right?

Some have said it, others have thought it: as Seventh-day Adventist Christians, we should not care about money. Profit is worldly. We need to share the Three Angels' Messages and not talk about profit. But can we really separate the one from the other? Can profit also be good - and actually important for God's work?

Listen to Jesse Zwiker, founder of Hyve and discover the hidden lie behind profitability. It became prominent in the mid-evil time period when the Catholic church made monks swear an oath of poverty. It became evident when the church collected exorbitant amounts of money from the population, claiming that one can buy his or her way out of purgatory. But the Bible tells us something else: "... remember that it is the LORD your God who gives you the power to gain wealth, in order to confirm His covenant..." - Deuteronomy 8:18. "The desire to accumulate wealth is an original affection of our nature, implanted there by our heavenly Father for noble ends." - CS148

Ellen White's Forgotten Vision

Around 1900, the population of San Francisco was doubling every few years. Tens of thousands of people came to the city - and Adventists were ready to help out. They established a network of restaurants, shops and treatment centers. They provided homes for orphans, gave jobs to unemployed people and shared the love of God with them. They were working for God full-time, in a self-sustainable way. They were missional entrepreneurs.

Ellen White referred to this work a few years later and called it a "beehive". She repeatedly said that we need to take this method and reproduce it in other cities. But unfortunately, we lost sight of it. Jesse Zwiker, founder of Hyve, explains why he started Hyve and how we can bring this beehive vision back to life.
