<itunes:summary>On Coming to America, the host interviews Kjell van Zoen, a they/he immigrant from Leiden, Netherlands (South Holland) who moved to the U.S. in 2004 and works as an organizational development and change management coach. They discuss Dutch pragmatism, directness, trade culture, and tolerance, plus contrasts with American small talk and U.S. cultural influence abroad. Kjell shares growing up in the 1980s, their pilot father’s death, moving to England at 12, studying Dutch Studies at UCL, and launching a short-lived Dutch publishing venture that led into graphic design. A connection brought Kjell to Portland on an E-2 visa, later gaining a green card through an 18-year marriage, co-founding a business, and transitioning into consulting and energy-efficiency coaching. Kjell also came out as queer non-binary, explored returning to the Netherlands but chose Portland, and highlights music as central to life, studying Sonic Arts at Portland Community College. Kjell closes with advice on finding supportive communities in a divided U.S. and being open to change.

<itunes:summary>In this episode of 'Coming to America,' the hosts interview Reverend Dr. Simon, an Anglican priest who discusses his extensive journey from England and Germany to the United States. Ordained in the Church of England in 1995, Simon moved to the U.S. to serve an Episcopal church, eventually becoming a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2011. He shares his experiences growing up in multicultural England, his various roles within U.S. congregations, and his current work as a chaplain and community advocate at Church at the Park, a nonprofit offering support to people experiencing homelessness in Salem, Oregon. The discussion explores cultural differences, social issues, and the contrasting elements within the U.S., such as the juxtaposition of extreme wealth and poverty and the intersection of charity and a lack of social safety nets. Simon also offers his perspective on America’s potential for opportunity and the ongoing struggle to balance its historical ideals with present-day realities.</itunes:summary>

Elisandra, the Director of Engagement and Project Designer at El Dorado, combines rich experience in design justice, rooted in her personal journey, activism, and education. Born and raised in Ciudad Juárez, México, she's a first-generation Mexican immigrant and a proud LGBTQIA2S+ member, which fuels her social justice passion, enriched by her border town upbringing. Elisandra received a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from Texas Tech University and a Master of Architecture with Honors from Washington University in St. Louis. Elisandra holds the Design for Spatial Justice Fellowship from the University of Oregon (2021-2023) and leads the Urban Violence Laboratory in Portland. Her commitment to advancing architecture and social justice led her to join El Dorado's Portland office in Portland, where she spearheads Engagement and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) metrics.

In her own words: "My upbringing in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, has profoundly shaped my understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion challenges in marginalized communities.
