At its heart, our effort is one of science communication, a critical, yet oft overlooked, component of the scientific enterprise.

As a first-generation college student from a small town in rural Pennsylvania, I received a Bachelor’s degree in biology with a minor in chemistry from Wilkes University (Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania). After graduation, I started working at CHOP, where a two-year commitment to work in the research lab of Dr. Paul Offit led to almost three decades of working with one of today’s most gifted science communicators. During my early years at CHOP, I studied rotavirus immunology and microencapsulation as a potential means for effective vaccine delivery. As vaccine safety concerns increased in the late 1990s, Dr. Offit — feeling that the voice of the scientist was missing in vaccine safety conversations — invited me to embark on the journey of creating the Vaccine Education Center, which has been the focus of my efforts for more than 20 years.

This month (March 2022), I finished a Master’s degree in Communication at Drexel University.
